Boys and Girls

When my daughter was born she instantly became the apple of my eye.

A few years later, I became doubly fortunate with the arrival of my sonI then had an apple for each eye. Rendered almost blind in both eyes, my vision of the world was then limited to what was visible through my children acting as filters.

When Apple #1 first came into the world, my whole universe shifted and expanded.

Prior to her birth, I understood the differentiation between genders and, in large part, supported it without too much question.

Being a staunch Catholic, I accepted that Popes were limited to the male of the species.

After My Daughter's birth, all of that changed. "What do you mean she can't be Pope? She can be anything she wants, Prime Minister or President or Queen of the World. She can be Doctor, Lawyer, Farmer, she can be Spiderman or Superman or Wonder Woman."

I became a leading proponent of the "Girls Can Do Anything They Want" crowd, especially as it related to My Daughter.

(However, I was not unaware of the irony when I was told that because I am a male, I could not volunteer for her Brownie troop - gotta tell you, that was a tough one to swallow.)

But time went on, and with the arrival of Apple #2, My Son, my whole universe again shifted and expanded. And my duties and responsibilities doubled to include being the head cheer leader of the ‘My Son Can Do Anything He Wants' club - he can be whoever and whatever he wants. He too, can be Pope, Prime Minister or King of the World (or Queen, for that matter - royalty is, after all, royalty). He too, can be an Astronaut or Olympic Medalist or maybe even a volunteer with a Brownie troop.

Nobody was going to tell me (or him) otherwise.

But then I came to realize that there are some fundamental differences between the two genders, a difference seemingly provided by nature, that is unaffected by nurture.

When My Daughter was in primary school, she came home one day complaining that one of her teachers had been mean to her.

We were sitting at the supper table at the time and I immediately stopped eating and made sure I had her complete and undivided attention.

I pushed back my chair and shifted forward onto the edge of my seat. I put on my tough guy face and rolled up my sleeves at the same time, demonstrating my very earnest conviction.

I said, "Well, tomorrow morning, I'm coming to school with you - and you point out this mean teacher and I’ll take her out - and I don’t mean to dinner.”

My Daughter, as a precursor of her teen-age self, wailed "Daaaadddyy" like I was being the ultimate in lame and inappropriate.

I sort of felt a little relieved, to tell you the truth, some of those elementary school teachers are pretty tough, especially the women, and tricky with it. I might have ended up getting my butt kicked.

But history has this bad habit of repeating itself.

Some years later, My Son came home from elementary school looking disgruntled, not very happy. He was still that way at the supper table and when asked, he complained that one of his teachers had been mean to him. And just as before, I pushed back my chair and shifted forward onto the edge of my seat. I put on my tough guy face and rolled up my sleeves at the same time, again demonstrating my very earnest conviction.

And I repeated the same words I had used before: "Well, tomorrow morning I'm coming to school with you - and you point out this mean teacher and I'll take her out - and I don’t mean to dinner.”

The previous experience with my daughter had left me feeling pretty cocky - mistakenly, it turns out - because I didn't so easily get off the hook this time.

My Son's response?

"Good," he says, “Take her out good.” Everything sort of went downhill from there.

In my defense, Ms. Evans, the Grade 3 teacher?

I guess her Dad had raised her to think that she, too, could be anything she wanted, even a ninja.

Stop Asking Me For Feedback !

Iam a heavy online shopper. Except for purchasing groceries and pants, all my consumerism occurs online — vitamins, books, socks, hygiene products, office supplies, furniture. Click-click-click... I am done. A few days later, often the next day, my purchase arrives. Shopping online defines minimal effort.

However, the convenience of shopping online is accompanied by an annoyance, the immediate request for feedback. Have companies become needy, or are they trying to avoid paying for market research, hence getting their customers to do it for free with the added benefit of getting immediate responses — who does not love immediate gratification?

Last week I ordered Jenny Jackson's debut novel, Pineapple Street, online. Instantly I received a "Rate my Shopping Experience" email. I had no "shopping experience;" I just bought a book. I bought Pineapple Street online to steer clear of the "shopping experience" requiring I leave the comfort of my home, drive in traffic, find parking, navigate a crowded mall, and deal with a disinterested retail associate.

Kitchen sponges, a five-pack of AAA batteries, beta fish food, four cases of mango bubly™ sparkling water and a car cover for my '82 Corvette, all recently bought online, are some of the things I have been asked to give feedback on.

My feedback: Cleaned like a sponge is supposed to, adequately generated electricity, awaiting fish feedback, quenches my thirst, keeps the dust off my Vette.

I hate reviewing my online purchases, so I rarely do so. However, I do a fair amount of Google reviews regarding my dining experiences; after all, Caesar salads vary considerably from restaurant to restaurant, as do dining experiences. I tell myself that I write these reviews with the noblest intentions; to prevent others from having a negative dining experience or help them find something new and enjoyable. I do not, I repeat, DO NOT, write Google reviews to "be seen."

Today businesses live in fear of Google Review, TripAdvisor, Trustpilot and Yelp. As social media has brought out the worst in people — anger at the world, sense of entitlement, self-righteousness — Amazon customers write one-star reviews of books they have not read because the envelope was torn.

Alternatively, there is the idyllic parallel universe of Airbnb, in which review reciprocity is often a powerful deterrent, leading to cat-hair-filled fleapits and unreasonable guests receiving five stars. Emotional subjectivity and serving one self-interest have made online reviews meaningless, even misleading.

On the other hand, because many people take what they see and read on the Internet and in their social media feeds as the gospel truth, meaningless as reviews are, businesses significantly benefit from positive online reviews. It cannot be denied that online reviews contribute to establishing and maintaining a business's and/or product's internet reputation, by providing the type of social proof that influences purchasing decisions or deciding whether to visit a business.

Petition to stop the RM of Vanscoy Council from withdrawing from the Delisle & District Fire Commission put on hold for now

When the Rural Municipality of Vanscoy announced, this past spring, that it intended to withdraw for the Delisle and District Fire Commission, many residents were not only confused, but understandably concerned.

Many residents were very frustrated with what they felt was a lack of communication with ratepayers about what the proposed withdrawal would mean, not only for themselves, but also the Town of Delisle and Village of Vanscoy, the other members of the commission.

Over 90% of online shoppers read reviews, according to a PowerReviews report from 2021. Furthermore, 96% of customers look for negative reviews specifically. Not surprisingly, research shows that 91% of 18 to 34-year-olds regard online reviews as equally trustworthy as personal recommendations.

While online reviews are seeing a rise in consumer trust, the same cannot be said for traditional advertising. According to Performance Marketing World, 84% of millennials do not trust online advertising. This finding is a sign of the times. People are tired of ads being pushed on their faces, especially since most ads misrepresent the truth about the quality of the product or service.

On the one hand, online reviews taken with a few grains of salt, they can be an integral part of a consumer's decision-making process. On the other hand, there is an inherent systematic problem with online reviews — they tend to overrepresent extreme viewpoints.

Consider the last time you purchased a product online. Inevitably you were asked to provide a review. Did you do it? If you did, you most likely either loved or absolutely hated the product or service. If you had a moderate view or an expected result — the mango bubly™ sparkling water tasted like mango — then odds are you did not bother leaving a review; it was not worth your time and effort. Like when it comes to political action, there is a "silent majority" among consumers. "The dish towels I bought on Wayfair dries my dishes. What more do you want me to say?"

This yin-yang between unhappy and extremely happy consumers is the problem of online reviews. Online reviews have a high degree of polarization, with many extreme positive and/or negative reviews and few moderate opinions. Creating divisiveness is, unfortunately, what the Internet does exceptionally well and with utmost efficiency.

I see feedback as history. All I ask of an e-commerce site is they get my order right the first time, and if I am unhappy and want to complain, I should be able to do so easily and, more importantly, I will be listened to.

One resident, Terri-lyn Lenz organized concerned citizens who decided to petition the RM of Vanscoy council to stop any withdraw from the commission until public hearings are be held.

“Since then”, Terri-lyn Lenz says, “ it is my understanding that the RM Reeve Leonard Junop has withdrawn as the RM’s representative on the commission and all parties are mediating to resolve this issue. So at this point we will not be submitting our petition to council”. Mon

Delisle Celebrity Sports Dinner 2023

The Delisle Arena, transformed into an intimate dining experience by volunteers, provided 350 people an amazing venue to enjoy a delicious meal provided by Vanscoy’s Robin’s Nest Cafe. There were endless silent auction items provided by local sponsors as well as many live auction items.

A few lucky attendees were who won the bid to sit with a celebrity at front row tables also received a custom made metal Flyers logo sculpture.

Before and after the dinner attendees had time to chat with the celebrities and get some photos and autographs to take home.

Kevin Waugh was once again the emcee for the evening and the infamous local, Dan Mantyka called the live auctions.

After the meal, Darryl Starling received an award from the committee recognizing his long running dedication of being a builder of local sports.

Then the highlight of the event became listening to the personal stories and humorous anecdotes told by the NHL celebrities on the main stage.

Hall of Famer, Brian Propp opened the program and, among other things, discussed having recently recovered from a stroke.

Don Saleski, Orest Kindrachuk and Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, then reminisced about the years they spent as the Broad Street Bullies and the endless adventures that took place over their careers.

Months of planning went into the event by the committee; Dave Anderchek, Amanda Czank, Dan Mantyka, Amanda Radford, Bonnie Snider and Ken Traynor. Many other volunteers assisted in setting up the venue and the Delisle Chiefs hockey players also volunteered to clear off the dining tables and make sure that everything went smoothly.

It was an amazing, once in a lifetime evening and if you missed it, stay tuned, and get your tickets or sponsorship early for the next one !

$250,000 EXTRA Winner in Delisle

Deborah Sinclair’s morning took a wonderful turn when she checked her WESTERN 649 ticket while enjoying a cup of coffee and discovered she won $250,000 on the July 22 EXTRA draw.

“I saw $250,000 on the screen and thought there was something wrong with my phone,” she laughed while claiming her prize in Saskatoon. “I scanned it again and the same thing came up, I could not believe it.”

Sinclair said she was so sure the Lotto Spot app was glitching, that she checked the numbers one-by-one.

“I checked the main draw numbers, and they didn’t match the winning numbers,” said the Delisle local.

“So, I took the ticket to the store and got the cashier to scan it. $250,000 win on EXTRA – I didn’t even think to check the EXTRA number separately!”

Wednesdays

A couple of plans are slated for her windfall. “I’m going to buy a new vehicle,” she said. “I’m also going to pay off my mortgage and put a new roof on my house – it needs it!”

Sinclair purchased her winning ticket on the day of the draw from the Delisle Agricultural Coop at 401 3rd St. Her EXTRA-winning numbers were 5983979.

Sask Lotteries is the main fundraiser for more than 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups in communities across Saskatchewan.

Pike Lake Fire Department Safety Tips

As kids head back to school its important to remember and share with your children some key tips that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year.

TRANSPORTATION SAFETY

Walkers…

• When walking to school, walk on the sidewalk if one is available. When on a street with no sidewalk walk facing traffic.

• Before you cross the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming.

• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing and always cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.

• Stay alert and don’t get distracted.

Bike Riders…

• Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in a single file.

• Come to a complete stop before crossing the street, walk bikes across the street.

• Stay alert and don’t get distracted.

Bus Riders…

• If possible, go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus.

• Teach your children to stand 6 feet (3 giant steps) away from the curb.

• Always obey and follow instructions of your bus driver.

Driving Your Child to School…

• Stay alert and avoid distracted driving, obey school zone speed limits and follow your school’s drop off procedure.

• Make eye contact with children who are crossing the street.

• Never pass a bus loading or unloading children.

• The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children, stop far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus.

AGRICULTURE REPORTS

Drought Support for Saskatchewan Livestock Producers On the Way

Support is coming for Saskatchewan livestock producers affected by drought. The Government of Saskatchewan today announced the province is making up to $70 million available to help offset extraordinary costs of feeding livestock to maintain the breeding herd in Saskatchewan.

On Demand Ranch Hand

Saskatchewan continues to work quickly with the federal government to jointly examine how AgriRecovery could help respond. Provincial funding will be available based on receipts or appropriate documentation for extraordinary expenses for the purchase of feed or transportation of feed or livestock, to provide cash flow to eligible producers impacted by significant drought.

"Immediate measures are needed as farmers and ranchers deal with significant challenges due to drought," Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit said. "Our government is committed to ensuring livestock producers have the support they need, as they continue to provide the high-quality food Saskatchewan families rely on."

The program will be administered by Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC).

"We appreciate the province stepping up and providing their portion of the AgriRecovery payment," said Keith Day, Board Chair of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association. "We look forward to a similar announcement from the federal government to provide their funding to ensure our producers get the help they need through these challenging times."

"This support is promising, and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) is thankful for how quickly the province stepped up to assist those livestock producers most in need, it will certainly help," said Ray Orb, president of SARM. "We are confident that the federal government is working together with the province to assess how they can provide additional support through AgriRecovery and look forward to seeing what that much-needed assistance will be."

Saskatchewan's funding will provide eligible producers with up to $80 per head to maintain breeding stock for beef cattle, bison, horse, elk, deer, sheep and goats. The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to providing assistance as soon as possible to producers.

Other supports have been implemented to help mitigate the situation. The Governments of Saskatchewan and Canada have agreed to increase the 2023 AgriStability interim benefit payment percentage from 50 per cent to 75 per cent, so producers can access a larger portion of their final AgriStability benefit early. The AgriStability compensation rate also recently increased from 70 to 80 per cent. In July, the federal and provincial governments announced SCIC was doubling the low yield appraisal threshold values to allow additional acres of cereal, pulse, canola and flax crops to be diverted to feed. Saskatchewan has also frozen the 2023 rate charged to producers who lease Crown grazing land. Additionally, through the 2023 Crown Grazing Lease Rental Reduction Program, lessees may be eligible for a rent reduction due to the impact of drought.

Producers in some areas of the province are dealing with drought, particularly in western Saskatchewan. Precipitation has remained well below normal, contributing to a substantial moisture deficit and hindering recovery of pasture and forage ranges.

Additional information, including application forms, will be available in the coming days at www.scic.ca or call toll-free at 1-844-723-1211.

Prairie Clean Energy announces Flax Straw Purchasing

(August 8, 2023) [Regina, SK] Saskatchewan-based business, Prairie Clean Energy (PCE), is excited to announce they will start buying flax straw from Canadian producers on the prairies this fall as the company starts its first foray into scaling up production of its flax pellets.

PCE will be purchasing flax straw within a 75-kilometre radius around both Regina and Gilbert Plains, MB, where the company has leased time at a facility for the initial production of the company’s proprietary flax pellets. PCE will be buying anywhere from 6,000 to 54,000 tonnes of flax straw, the range being wide as the company works on production projections and growth plans into 2024.

“We’re thrilled to say we’re now producing pellets and moving from being a Saskatchewan start-up success story into a revenue-producing Saskatchewan success story,” said Mark Cooper, PCE’s CEO and President, adding, “We knew the time was right to start buying straw now as all our hard work, relationship building, and research over the past few years has led to this market opportunity.”

The company requests that interested producers go to PCE’s website (prairiecleanenergy.com) for more information versus calling the company, citing wanting to handle demand in a way that works both for producers and PCE’s team.

306-221-2106

Cooper goes on to say that the company has signed several agreements with companies in Japan and the UK for their patent-pending pellets for biomass fuel, but that the current export opportunity comes a little closer to home and in a new area. “Our first pellets

are being exported into the lucrative US horse bedding market, with our initial sales happening in the US midwest,” Cooper stated. “Through our research, we discovered that flax pellets make excellent animal bedding because they are low dust, highly absorbent, compostable, and low ammonia producing…they are a superior animal bedding product for horses, cows, and small animals,” said Cooper. “Adding another product line to our company was a natural next step knowing the incredible benefits and versatility of our flax pellets,” he explained.

The straw purchased from around Regina is to secure the initial fibre needed for anticipated early production in 2024 at the facility the company has leased and dedicated primarily to producing flax pellets for customers needing sustainable biomass fuel feedstock. The straw purchased from 75 kilometres around Gilbert Plains will be used for the production of PCE’s Flax Premium Bedding pellets.

“We are and will always be a bio-energy company,” Cooper stated, “but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity our versatile flax pellets presented for revenue and providing a needed solution in another area,” said Cooper.

This announcement comes after several other exciting announcements from PCE. Recently, PCE received a $1.1 million dollar grant from the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network for its GHG emissions reduction project utilizing prairie biomass to generate energy and support the potash industry in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. PCE also announced they received a $180,000 grant in the spring from Innovation Saskatchewan to continue its research and readiness work on flax pellet production in preparation for the 2024 opening of its Regina facility.

Prairie Clean Energy is a Saskatchewan-based company that produces solutions for decarbonizing energy sources in Canada and globally by aggregating and processing under-utilized biomass resources in the prairies, including agricultural and forestry residues, to produce a safe, transportable and storable feedstock that can be used for biomass and animal bedding markets.
