SCHOOL NEWS Year 9 History Trip to the Black Country Museum When we visited the Black Country Museum, I saw so many historical, interesting things. The building that caught my interest the most was the Victorian School. I found it fascinating how different school was in the nineteenth century compared to now. I also enjoyed the coal mine as it showed me how bad the conditions were in some jobs during this time. I also saw the small canal boat and lots of Victorian shops, for example the sweet shop. The back to back Victorian houses were also very different compared to our houses today as they were crammed together. Before going to the Black Country Museum, I had no idea how chains were made. However, we stopped at a stall where we were showed hope to make it. I also learnt how strict Victorian School's were and how different their lessons were. Furthermore, I did not realise how dangerous working in a mine actually was. I enjoyed the Victorian School the most as I love seeing the contrast in our school and their school. They were only taught three subjects (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic). The teacher was also very strict. They wrote on blackboards instead of paper, which I also found very interesting. I now feel I can use my knowledge from the Black Country Museum to compare the Victorian times to the 21st Century. It is very different in many different ways. I could also use this information in lessons. Thank you to the History Department for a great day out. Madeleine W ————————————————————————————————————— Why learn about the industrial revolution when you can actually be part of it? So that is what year nine did. We made the long journey up to Dudley near Birmingham but it was definitely worth it. As soon as we arrived we were met by a guide who was dressed the part in clothes from the 1800s. Our group started off by visiting a house of a middle class family with two children. We learned that multiple houses ended up slanting and even being destroyed due to the ground being altered from the coal mines. Most of our group was shocked to hear that an average family was expected to have around eleven children. We then went to the famous part of the Black Country, the coal mines.
We were lucky enough to go down a walk-in coal mine
which had been kept intact since the industrial revolution. Here, we watched different presentations of what would happen to the workers in the coal mines, which could be either adults or children, in pitch black. Luckily a trip to the sweet shop and classic Victorian chip shop calmed the people in our group who were scared from the dark. However, all this fun came at a cost as we then had to have a disciplined lesson in a Victorian school. This definitely put Miss Simmonite in her place. Overall though we all had a lovely time as it was fun and educational and I would do anything to come back for some fish and chips from the industrial revolution. SCHOOL NEWS Design and Technology Trip to EngFest at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) On Tuesday 17th October, 15 girls were selected to go to EngFest 2 at the IET The first task we completed was re-designing the walkie talkie building in London. We were given play doh and random cardboard pieces, and we had to make a structured building. We then used our initial design to make a CAD design on amazing AutoCAD software which was on the laptops. Later we looked around an exhibition, that displayed robots, Virtual reality, drones and all kind of cool things. We went on to listen to a lecture by Lewis Dartnell about what would happen if the world ended. It was very interesting and he has even written his own book called The Knowledge. We later ate lunch swiftly, moving quickly onto the next activity. We then had a Lego workshop! We had to work in small groups and create a code that a Lego robot had to follow. We had to follow a course. It was really fun and challenging! The last part of the day was a talk from Roma Agrawal, an engineer. She spoke about different bridges and how they had been structured. She also helped develop the design of the Shard! After having a great day we headed home. Thank you to Miss Dines and Ms Sears for organising the day and making it so enjoyable! Diya
I found the DT and Science trip really fun. I liked working on different projects like building and programming things. We did a lot of group work where we had to think creatively to make a piece of architecture and program a robot to move in the direction we wanted it to go. I also liked going round and trying different experiments like the Virtual Reality and the other really cool inventions and tests. Aleena More photographs from the day can be seen here

ART, TEXTILE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NEWS
RMS Works on Paper - “Sneaking a peak into the minds and sketchbooks of future, talented artists!” This is the second time that ‘RMS Works on Paper’ , an exhibition by girls currently working towards a GCSE or A Level in Fine Art, Textile Design or Photography has been put on at the Watersmeet in Rickmansworth. The opening reception is on Tuesday 7th November 2017 from 5.00pm - 7.00pm (before the first night of the PARTS production of “9 to 5”) and entry is free. The exhibition aims to showcase the outstanding preparatory drawings, prints, embroidery, models and photographs that often hide within the pages of lovingly crafted sketchbooks and folders. The focus is normally on the outcome but as all creative people know the ideas are discovered and recorded in a variety of methods on paper before they are brought more fully to life on canvas, garments, print, wall hangings or in 3D form. Councillor Chris Lloyd, Lead Member of Leisure said “I am delighted that Three Rivers is working in partnership with RMS to put on Works on paper. An exhibition not to be missed” From Tuesday 7th November – Sunday 31 December 2017 Monday - Friday 9.00am – 5.00pm and Saturday 9.00am – 2.00pm Watersmeet, High Street, Rickmansworth WD3 1EH
