SCHOOL NOTICES Mindfulness Course for Parents We didn't have enough take up for a Mindfulness for Parents programme this Term, but it may be that some of you might have a New Year's Resolution that is relevant and a course during the coming Hilary Term could be just what you want. I would again ask Gayle Creasey http:// gaylecreaseypsychotherapy.co.uk/ to run the programme over eight weeks and including a day retreat (evenings and day to be agreed). This would be a Mindfulness Foundation programme that is one and a half hours each evening and the amount of home practice suggested is more manageable than some approaches. The charge will be around ÂŁ225 including course materials. You will have heard me say before how helpful I believe Mindfulness can be, and current work in School with pupils from Years 5, 6 and 10 is very worthwhile. I believe many of you would benefit (as I did) from this basic course and, as I've said, this might be in line with a few resolutions for 2018. Please let me know if you are interested and/or if you'd like to know more. Rev'd John Quill School Chaplain jquill@royalmasonic.herts.sch.uk

SCHOOL NEWS Work Experience Evie I in Year 10 applied for and was successful in being chosen to take part in the Cisco work experience programme for 15 and 16 year olds. Here is her account of the week: “Work experience at Cisco was a great opportunity for me to widen my skills based around technology, computing and communication. All skills that I will need when entering the working world! The week I spent at Cisco was very interesting and I learnt a lot as well as becoming more confident about being introduced to a working environment. While having a lot of lectures from employees as well as apprentices, practical activities such as ‘tear downs’ were a lot of fun as well as giving me an insight into all the different opportunities and roles you can take up at Cisco. Along side learning skills critical for the work place, I learned many things that I brought back to school which have allowed me to progress further in my lessons. An example of this was learning how to program QR codes using Python, I can now use this in my Computer Science lessons in addition to regular programming. In the 5 days I was at Cisco, I learnt many useful skills and got to know a working environment, which allowed me to feel more confident when I apply for my first job in a few years!”

SCHOOL NEWS Visiting speaker Friday 19th January 2018 Lindsey Cole - A female adventurer On Friday 19th January, Lindsey Cole will be coming to speak to the Senior School in Assembly about her adventures. However, we also have limited availability for a number of students to meet and talk with Lindsey over lunch in the Governors' Dining Room and also to attend a short workshop led by Lindsey from 1.30-2.00pm. If your daughter would be interested in one or both of these events, please can you ask them to email Mrs Bloomfield-Proud ASAP with a sentence about why they would like to participate. rbloomfieldproud@royalmasonic.herts.sch.uk It is a wonderful opportunity for your daughter to meet a young person who has challenged themselves and who could be an inspiration for your daughter. So who is Lindsay Cole? Lindsey grew up near Rickmansworth and has returned from her most recent expedition in Australia where she walked 1000 miles solo following the Rabbit Proof Fence through the Western Australian desert. She retraced the journey of three aboriginal girls who had been forcibly removed from their homes. They were placed in a settlement to be assimilated into white society and they escaped, walking 1000 miles home to Jigalong, following the Rabbit Proof Fence. The story was made into a book and a film, which came out in 2004. She read the book whilst backpacking in 2007 and was inspired by the characters' story after the loss of her father. It was many years in the waiting for her to pay homage and retrace their journey. Lindsey even had the fortune of meeting one of the girls who made the journey herself 86 years ago- she is now 96! She is writing a book about her adventure and visits schools about her experiences. Lindsey's previous adventures have included: cycling the length of Africa, running across Britain, roller skating to Paris and a few Ironman triathlons. You can also find out more about her from the links below. www.lindseycole.co.uk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPsC-pXkwOM&t=195s

SPORTS RESULTS Netball RMS vs St Margaret’s Bushey Year 8 A Team won 17-9 On the 28th November the Netball A team played a match against St Margaret's Bushey. It was a tough game but the end result was amazing. We won 17-9 which we are all very proud about. Every single player tried there very hardest even though we have a few things to work on in training. We all work so well as a team as we can see from, the result. POTM went to Isabella H Goal Shooter. Well done! Olivia R Year 8 A Team Captain Year 8 B Team won 16-6 On Wednesday, Year 8 B team played against St Margaret’s Bushey. The B team won with a score of 16-6. We played well as a team and got some good goals. Defense worked extremely well together, catching the rebounds and sending the ball down the court. The attackers always got into space and communicated well. Well played to all the girls. POTM went to Annabelle T (Goal Attack) and Maya S (Wing Defence). Annabelle T Year 8 B Team Captain

Hockey Senior District Hockey Our Senior team came second overall in the Senior District Hockey tournament: they drew against Parmiters and as it went to goal difference, they lost by 1. The girls all played fantastic hockey and it was a very good standard. Well done to all the girls.

Congratulations to Grace Congratulations to Grace I, Year 10, who has been awarded a Jack Petchey Award for outstanding achievement and dedication to her sport. She was recently presented with her award at a ceremony in London. In addition, Grace received an award for Track Athlete of the Year at her athletics club. Also Grace received the Track Athlete of The Year award last week from her club. This comes after a great season for Grace where she competed alongside some of the country’s best runners smashing her 1500m time and qualifying for the English Schools Championships in Birmingham. Well done on both these fantastic achievements!
