Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMU) is a vanguard in healthcare education, dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare by developing highly skilled, evidence-based, and compassionate practitioners.
Over two decades ago, a group of visionary educators recognized the need for an institution that would set new standards in healthcare education and meet the nation’s healthcare workforce needs. Founded in 1998, RMU was quick to introduce a then groundbreaking model, offering remote learning and periodic onsite class sessions. This innovative approach allowed working healthcare professionals across the nation to advance their education without the need to relocate or put their careers on hold.
This new educational model was so pioneering that accrediting bodies were initially unsure how to assess it. However, RMU’s founders remained committed to their vision, and they secured accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities as well as receiving additional specialty accreditations for academic programs.
Today, RMU stands as a testament to that visionary spirit with 10 doctorate and 14 master degrees, along with 20 certificates, residencies, and fellowships. Programs are offered through a blend of flexible online, hybrid, and on-campus residential programs within a vibrant campus nestled in the beautiful mountains of Provo, Utah. RMU has welcomed students and healthcare
professionals for a quarter of a century, from all 50 states.
What sets RMU apart is our unwavering commitment to evidence-based, outcomesoriented practice. Here, education is about advancing knowledge and advancing healthcare to improve the human condition. Our state-of-the-art facilities, learningcentered approach, cutting-edge curriculum, research models, and personalized teaching by nationally acclaimed professors empowers students to think critically and embrace continuous self-improvement—all with the desire to help people in their greatest times of need.
RMU continually raises the bar by challenging traditional norms, expanding the horizons of evidence-based practices, and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow’s healthcare. Our commitment to service extends far beyond our campus. We shape compassionate professionals who create a tangible impact through international humanitarian care and our community clinics, providing healthcare services to underserved people.
As our graduates step into the world, they carry RMU’s values and knowledge poised to drive positive change in healthcare. In a world where healthcare is constantly evolving, RMU stands as an innovative leader pioneering the way forward. HISTORY OF ACADEMIC INAUGURATIONS
The inauguration is a ceremonial induction into office. For a new president, this is a planned event to celebrate officially taking office and serves as a rite of passage that formally acknowledges a change in leadership within the university. During the installation ceremony, the new president is “vested” with the official powers of office.
University presidential inaugurations in the United States can be traced back to the 17th century when the nation’s nine colonial colleges first established this practice. A hallmark of higher education is the academic traditions and the pomp and circumstance of those events, including the inauguration of a new president. The regalia worn by university administration, faculty, and other program participants, such as the cap, gown, and hood, are patterned after the attire of monks and students in the Middle Ages. Other ceremonial traditions of inauguration include the president’s medallion and chain, the president’s regalia, the university mace, and the university seal, all physical symbols of the institution.
The presidential medallion and chain is bestowed upon each President of the University during the official inauguration ceremony. The University President wears the medallion at all Commencement ceremonies and official occasions that require wearing academic regalia. The medallion and chain is passed down to each new President of the University.
The Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions Presidential Medallion and Chain is cast in bronze. It consists of a chain with
a medallion engraved with the University Seal and smaller medallions engraved with each president’s name and tenure.
The tradition of the mace derives from medieval England when the mace bearer held the mace for dignitaries at the beginning of ceremonial functions. Typically, the mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal or wood. The mace is a symbol of the University’s governing authority and is present only when the President and Board of Trustees are in attendance. It signifies the proceedings have official sanction. The person carrying the University mace leads the academic procession at Commencement and other ceremonial functions.
The Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMU) Mace has a wood base with the handle representing the solid and firm foundation on which RMU is built. Separating the handle from the top of the mace is a brass disc engraved with RMU’s foundational purpose of Advancing Knowledge, Advancing Healthcare. The head of the mace represents the founding of the University and is comprised of four three-inch brass medallions-one engraved with the University Seal, and the other three engraved with a likeness of each original Founder of the University—Dr. Richard P. Nielsen, Dr. Michael Skurja, Jr., and Dr. Larry T. Hall. The top of the mace recognizes academics with a representation of the eternal flame, which honors the commitment to learning and expansion of knowledge.
