Branch Circular No 608

May 2011 1

Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, Welcome to the May Circular and I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather. This is the last Circular before the Conference, so I wish everyone the best for a good Conference; we hope to have 120 delegates this year. Remember to have photo ID with you (Driving licence or RNA membership card) for the security gate, Plymouth Dockyard have to be very careful about security because of the large number of nuclear submarines that are there. We have drafted some Daily Orders for each day, please pass to your delegate and a copy for those attending, it gives some useful info such as taxis and the HQ staff mobile numbers – as well as where and when to be! Apart from all the jollifications our Guest of Honour will be launching our new image and materials will be available to take home with you (saves postage too!!). If you need materials for an Armed Forces Day or similar let us know and we can send some off. We had a marvellous HQ Open day with 32 Shipmates turning up, a tot on our harbour cruise went down well (see front page photo). We received a very nice note: Dear Shipmate General Secretary, I would like to thank you and your perfectly formed small but very efficient staff, for the excellent HQ open day on Friday last. Both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It gave me as a mere (PA to Hon Sec) to be able to put a face to names that I normally only see on monthly circulars and to be able to speak to you all was an added bonus. .... it was a day well spent and when the word gets out to the branches I can see the need for many more similar open days than the one planned for September. A big BZ to you all, I look forward to seeing and being a part of in my own small way of your plan for the future of The Royal Naval Association. Yours aye Shipmates Vaughan & Carole Nelson (Hon Sec) Bridport Branch RNA You ought now to be pre-booking with us the following events: HQ open day (16 Sep), St Paul’s Service for Seafarers (12 Oct), Cenotaph parade tickets (13 Nov), Field of Remembrance (10 Nov), numbers are all we need at this stage. It is great to see announcements from our overseas branches, if any overseas hon sec would like an overseas page in the Circular and HQ roll newsletter please give me a shout and we will put one in. Shipmates may want to see the text of the report on the Armed Forces Covenant, please go to the MoD website – it is really interesting. Finally, I can confirm that Mrs Sheila Tarabella has left the RNA after a long period off work and that we are recruiting a new AGS, details to follow. See you at the bar (mine’s a G&T)

Best wishes from Semaphore Tower Paul Quinn General Secretary 2

Chairmans Chat

Dear Shipmates, The General Secretary made a bid on our behalf to the Maritime Charities Funding Group (MCFG) seeking support for our Shipmates Campaign to support those leaving the Navy, via voluntary or compulsory redundancy, as a result of the SDSR. We have received confirmation that an initial grant of £40K has been allocated which will be made in two stages of £20K each over the next year. There are conditions attached, which we had expected and are comfortable with, which require us to prove that we have achieved the outcomes we promised. It will be up to us to fulfil our side of these conditions in making sure that our branches are prepared to welcome and support any early leavers who will be seeking to settle in their localities, and have responses ready to the sort of questions they are likely to ask. An FAQ sheet is being prepared to help branches in this respect. Fine detail is still to be added to the basic framework of the campaign in liaison with the RN, but this is a great opportunity to not only help our unfortunate serving shipmates to make their unexpected transition into civilian life but also to significantly enhance the profile of the RNA to the wider Navy. We hope it will also have an additional benefit on membership, though this will need working on as many service leavers may well resent the early end to their chosen careers and our approach to them has to be sympathetic and encouraging at a difficult time for them. The grant from MCFG will cover membership for all those who take up the offer and it is hoped that these may translate into long term members if the welcome is warm. There will also be monies available to branches to cover administrative costs of each member recruited. An additional benefit we have received to our general marketing and rebranding campaigns is financial support from Pusser's Rum which will enable us to purchase extra items to provide Areas with publicity material. We are also discussing with Pusser's the possibility of providing a member's discount on the purchase of their rum, and are awaiting details on the outlets through which this could be obtained. On 20th May we had 32 members attend our first open day of the year at Semaphore Tower and all were very impressed with the welcome they received and the facilities they saw. They talked with the Staff and were given a brief by the GS in the Semaphore Tower Conference Room, which we will now be available for us to use for future National Council meetings to reduce costs currently incurred at the Maritime Club. After a snack lunch and drink in the Semaphore Arms the visitors thoroughly enjoyed a boat ride around the dockyard provided free of charge on a Harbour-master’s launch. An excellent day was had by all. As we head into our conference season these are positives we need to pass on to all our members. A sincere vote of thanks is due to the GS for all the effort he has put into these various projects and for obtaining both support and funding to help us try to achieve our aims in this year of recruiting. I know there are some amongst you who have your doubts about these campaigns but I ask you all to do your best to promote and encourage these initiatives. We have a great bunch of members who have given myself and Keith Crawford a hearty shipmates welcome at the 9 Area meetings we have attended over the past 8 months and I am sure they will respond with enthusiasm to these marketing and recruiting projects. Thank you for your support over the past year and I look forward to meeting many of you in Plymouth in June. Chris 3

Malta was, however extremely difficult to keep supplied, (particularly with oil), and by the summer of 1942 the island was close to surrender; the Pedestal convoy of August that year was literally the last chance. On entering the Mediterranean the convoy was subjected to prolonged ferocious air and submarine attacks and suffered terrific losses both in warship and escorts and merchantmen. OHIO. Being the only tanker left, was marked for particular attention, and during the course of her voyage suffered a direct hit from a torpedo, direct bomb hits, any number of near misses, and was struck by two Luftwaffe aircraft shot down while attacking her. Despite her engines being dead and her hull practically broken in two, she was towed into Grand Harbour by three destroyers and a minesweeper with her vital cargo virtually intact. After he survived a German mine in the Thames estuary in 1939, the war took him, commissioned as a naval officer, to Iceland, Spitsbergen and the USA. Given command of his own ship, he patrolled the waters off Canada and Newfoundland before returning to Britain in 1944. This true story, written by Tim Parker on the basis of personal conversations and a scrapbook entrusted to him 60 years after the war, illuminates one of the greatest achievements of the war- beating the U-boat blockade of the American coast by squadrons that were little more than motley collections of armed trawlers and whalers. A keen observer with an eye for the absurd, his story is shot through with the good shipmate’s sense of decency and humour that sustained him through the ordeals of convoy duty in the Arctic Ocean and the dark years of war. “Grips you and holds you in full flight with more than enough detail for the real Shipmate”. This is an extraordinary story of young boy who makes good despite many obstacles both personal and professional, a tale that could inspire many a young reader to take to the Sea and make a career from it. Tim has captured the very essence of Wartime Sea Service and brought to light in graphic detail the hardships and personal sacrifices that they all had to endure and overcome in order to stay alive and ensure the nation was kept supplied. This would have been one of those stories lost forever (as many were) if Tim had not brought it to light, well worth a read, you will not be disappointed! At the moment we are thinking that filming might take place in Portsmouth, and we would be happy to transport people to this location for filming if they were the right contributor and would be happy to travel. I'm looking to talk to some tattooed sailors, old and young, who'd be happy to talk to me about their tattoos, experiences of getting them, and where they had them done. It would be great if you could instruct anyone who might be interested in talking to me to contact me direct on either 0121 567 6260 or 07881 853 921, or on this email address. I will of course be happy to call people back. Alternatively, if people are happier to contact their branch of the RNA and come through them, then I am happy to work this way too - though I'm sure the former will be simpler. 12

Welfare RNA Welfare Seminar Report -HMS Nelson 16 April 2011. The Royal Naval Association held its Welfare Seminar in the WO’s SR’s Mess HMS Nelson on Saturday the 16 April 2011. There were 52 attendees and 5 speakers, the seminar started at 1000 (4 bells in the forenoon watch) and finished at 1500 (6 bells in the afternoon watch), with a break for lunch at half time. Royal Naval Benevolent Trust were the first speakers and Corinne Day ably took us on a power-point visual guided tour of the RNBT and what it can do for you. The Jewel in RNBT’s Crown is Pembroke House which is a Residential Care Home situated in Gillingham and is home to 50 residents. Most of the residents are self reliant and there for the longer stay, but there is a facility for a number of nursing beds. Many questions were asked about benevolence and Philip Shuttleworth MBE the Vice President of RNBT was on hand to answer them, stating that almost 4000 cases are almonised each year by RNBT’s grants committee, with an average grant of about £510.00. Wendy Scott and Marian Aspland’s presentation was on the Citizens Advice Bureau where they both work in the Gosport office. They covered many topics such as debt, social housing, mental health, money matters, benefits and many others. One of the main topics was debt and how much is owed by society, but with a careful debt management plan and support from CAB these obstacles can be overcome. Their main message was to seek advice, act swiftly and do not let the problems grow out of control. Be decisive in your actions and it will save yourself a lot of heartache, and possibly save your home as well. Community Network project worker, Jennifer Reiter gave a very interesting presentation and was well received. Community Group is where a facilitator sets up a conference call to about 8 people for them to talk to each other on any subject for about an hour every two weeks, at no cost to any of those taking part. This helps alleviates some of the loneliness of those who are housebound or sociably inactive. There was a sound suggestion that these” Groups” be given ships names to enhance their appeal, and this was well received by most of the audience. Kevin Palin from Service Personnel Veterans Agency was our last speaker who stole the show with his light-hearted but very informative and pertinent information. His main topic was Pensions and how to apply for the myriad of benefits associated with pensions and how to reapply for deterioration of health to enhance present pensions. He made us aware of how the system works and how to ensure that you get the right advice enabling you to claim the correct allowance/benefits. In essence he said to use the Government approved websites and SPVA to obtain the correct forms and if you are at all unsure when completing them, then ask an SPVA operative to help you. The SPVA telephone number is; 0800 169 2277 The Directgov website has a user friendly “Benefits Checker System” for the general public if they want to know what benefits they might be entitled to; benefits-adviser.direct.gov.uk Just follow the on-screen instructions to see if you are eligible for any of the 27 benefits listed!

All existing members who have completed a Gift aid form in the past are respectfully requested to complete a new Gift Aid for to cover this tax year.

GIFT AID DECLARATION - ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION Title ..... Forename(s) ................................. Surname ................……………. Address ........................................................ (Branch...........................Area no; ---------) ........................................................ ........................................................ Post Code ............. I want the charity to treat my annual subscription and all donations I have made from the date of this declaration until I notify you otherwise as Gift Aid Donations. Signature:- .................................................. Date:- ................................................……… Notes 1. If your declaration covers donations you may make in the future: Please notify the charity if you change your name or address while the declaration is still in force. You can cancel the declaration at any time by notifying the charity - it will then not apply to donations you make on or after the date of cancellation or such later date as you specify. 2. You must pay an amount of income tax and/or capital gains tax at least equal to the tax that the charity reclaims on your donations in the tax year (currently 25p for each £1 you give). 3. If in the future your circumstances change and you no longer pay tax on your income and capital gains equal to the tax that the charity reclaims, you can cancel your declaration (see note 1). 4. If you pay tax at the higher rate you can claim further tax relief in your Self Assessment tax return. 5. If you are unsure whether your donations qualify for Gift Aid tax relief, ask the charity. Or you can ask you local tax office for leaflet IR113 Gift Aid.
