Branch Circular No 6010
July 2011 1
, Welcome to the July Newsletter, and I hope those Conference hangovers are now better!!! Iâ€&#x;d like to start by giving a HUGE thank you and BZ to the many Shipmates who turned out to represent and sell the RNA during the Armed Forces Days. The new Member-get-Member materials seem to have gone down very well and hopefully those new members are enjoying your branch activities and comradeship! A particularly good effort from the Scottish Area to support the National events in Edinburgh, I have put in the Circular reports we have received. A big well done to Falmouth branch for organising and leading the Falmouth Sea Sunday celebrations. A RM band lead the parade, the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall took the salute with Commodore Jamie Miller, the Naval Regional Commander (West). This is a picture of Shipmate Ron Burdekin, branch Secretay and power behind the throne (or is that Mayor)!! I appreciate that many branches have not yet received their MGM materials; we hope to have all remaining branch boxes out within the next few days. You may have already received some posters in a tube; the boxes contain smaller A4 posters and other materials. Any branch requiring more give a ring to Phil or Nigel. We have new donation tins and bookmarks that may be useful as well as the forms, referral cards, car stickers etc. No danger of me having to give a bottle of rum away for the most MGM recruits since no branch has slapped in, looks like a good night on leave for me!! The new website should go live in the next two weeks, and that will have all the new materials in the „downloadsâ€&#x; section, we are just ironing out the last few snags at the moment. It would be a great idea in the next two meetings to really sell the Biennial parade in September, Cenotaph parade in November and the St Pauls Service in October. We have applied for tickets for the last two events, details in the Circular. If you want to park a mini-bus or coach just off Whitehall for the Biennial and in short staggering distance of the Civil Service Club, please get the registration and drivers name to us asap and no later than 20 August. The biennial parade should be a great event, with the First Sea Lord reviewing and other Associations joining us, it is a rare privilege and we must use it or lose it!!! I know we have had to disappoint a couple of branches who wished to come to our September Open day, but we have been a victim of our own success. We hope to run an extra day on 4 November, so get in contact and book in. My apologies in the last Circular I reported that Motion 5 had carried, when in fact it had not. Finally we are very proud of our Christmas cards this year, Nigel braved a snowstorm to take some great pictures of HMS VICTORY, get those orders in!!

Daily Orders 1. Member get member campaign - Feedback We used our “Once Navy Always Navy” advertising banner at The West Sussex Armed Forces Weekend on the 25/26 June 2011and found it to be a bit of a crowd stopper, I had 16 enquiries on the Saturday from persons who had been or wanted to join the RNA. The advertising material proved to be a real boon and the information supplied was appreciated by the enquirers. The persons who asked for information came from not only Sussex but, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire and also Yorkshire. Hopefully this new advertising campaign will be as great a success as was shown at this one event. S/M Bob Scott Area 3 RNA Chairman and PRO

5. HQ Open Day-16 September 2011 – and a new date Sorry Shipmates ! Due to all the places been taken, (in double quick time) we are the victims of our own success and have had to close the books. We are now hoping to run another “Open Day” later in the year (dates to be confirmed) as there seems to be quite a demand. Those who applied and were unlucky this time will be first on the list. New date 4 November!!
6. Books for the Troops in Afghanistan –No longer needed Several years ago there was an appeal for Books for the Troops in Afghanistan. The appeal was very successful, lasted 3 months and was then stopped. Since then however a number of individuals and groups have continued to send parcels of books – which though very kind – are no longer needed and actually are hindering the postage of family parcels to the boys and girls on the ground. Among the most generous of the culprits (if I may call them that), are members of the RNA. Immensely well meaning and very generous, and some of your members are still sending parcels of books. Those who include an address we write to, but many do not. Could all members and Branches please stop sending books for obvious reasons, and we thank you for your generosity in the past and many good wishes to you and to all in the future. If any of your members require a carer for the day (one carer per participant) they must also be in possession of a ticket which must come out of your total allocation. Note; Please ensure that your members are aware that they are likely to be standing in Whitehall for at least 1½ hours prior to the March Past then marching for a distance of over 1 mile, and possibly in inclement weather. Further parade instructions will be sent with your tickets which will be despatched towards the end of September. 11. Calling all Branch Secretaries To assist new branch secretaries the AMC has commissioned the production of a handbook for branch officials. To avoid reinventing the wheel and make best use of all the experience of our current branch secretaries, would you send any contributions you have to Nigel at HQ. These might range from a calendar of „to dos‟ and vital annual dates, to hints and tips on keeping your membership list in date. All contributions gratefully received. Thanks in anticipation.
12. Things you may not know about the issue of the Tot The numbers for Grog each day were compiled by the Master at Arms/Coxswain using Form S.73A – this form certified the numbers entitled to victualling but for the purposes of grog listed the numbers entitled to a rum ration which excluded those who were “Under Age (UA)”, “Temperance (T)” or “Stopped Disciplinary (D)” or “Stopped Medical (SM)” – these had to be listed separately from those who were entitled. So the calculation (generally) in the S.73A had little to do with the numbers of those in the mess (by which the Caterer claimed the Daily Messing Rate (DMR) but those who were entitled to draw the rum ration – this could be significantly different from the S.73A numbers which also shewed the differences associated with “Stopped Medical” numbers who could (depending on the nature of the disease) be entitled to “Messing Supplements” – even then, those who were UA, T or SD/SM could also 8
draw (via the calculation on the S.73A) “Limers Supplements” depending on the climatic conditions. The final calculations made by “The Tanky” were made on the number of Tots to which the Mess was entitled, and not on the number of inhabitants. Paddy McClurg

17 Armed Forces Weekend – Reports
The Main event was held in Edinburgh with a big turn out from Scottish Branches and a great connection with HMS Portland, with parties in both directions! The National Standard was paraded and an excellent RNA stand in the heart of the action with our new illuminated pop-up banner and the new Member-get-Member pull up banners brought in a lot of interest. S/M Brian McKenzie Bradford RNA took delivery of our new literature and it arrived just in time for Veterans Day which was a great success. Hopefully the three people who seemed really keen will turn up at our next meeting, plus quite a few took the leaflet, our existing members liked the car stickers and even the Lord Lieutenant took away a poster to pin up on his church notice board the next day. S/M Valerie Robertson- Chairman of the Bradford RNA Stirling Armed Forces Day was an extremely wet affair on Saturday, but the Royal Navy were well represented, the parade being led by the RM Band and three RNA Standards. We also had a number of Junior and Senior Rates from Faslane, who visited our tent and we enjoyed their company and informed them of the changes to the RNA and the way forward. . S/M Michael Hesketh Plymouth‟s Armed Forces Day turned out to be very successful. Amongst our many visitors was the First Sea Lord, FOST, Cmdr. Ric Cheadle, The High Sheriff of Devon and the Minister of Defence. „They and Theirs‟ enjoyed the traditional hospitality. It was a long old 12-hour day 10
but we were well supported by our specialist Branch team who kept our spirits up with numerous cups of tea and the odd tot or two. As usual RNA Plymouth ran a very effective stall at the National Armed Forces Day in Plymouth and delivered a quality Stand on behalf of our Association as they do at every Navy Days ! S/M Arthur Gutteridge – Plymouth RNA
The Portsmouth Naval Base Armed Forces days were well attended, probably due to the fact that one of the new Type 45‟s, HMS Daring was open to the public and 6000 went aboard to have a look see. HMS Gloucester was also open and 3000 visited her for the very last time, as she was de-commissioned four days later. We had the RNA stall right on “Sheer Jetty” near HMS Daring so a good spot to meet and greet the public and also all the serving personnel who were there on duty for the two days. The Saturday gave us all great problems due to the very high winds and it was only due to the concrete blocks (that Philip from RNA HQ )attached to the legs that stopped us doing a “Mary Poppins”. We had quite a number of firm enquiries to join many of the Branches around the country so I hope they come to fruition and we also we sold RNA goods/slops to the many shipmates who visited us. The Base Warrant Officer WO1 CJ Smith MBE and PO “Spike” Saunders could not have been more helpful and on the second day we were visited by Captain Paul Lemkes RN (Base Captain) called at the stand and spent quite some time talking with us and was very informative. The high point was the fact that when we spoke to all the serving guys, and they had heard of the Association and the fact that they are now members. These events are really worthwhile for recruitment and keeping us there with the RN of today. S/M Rita Lock – National Welfare Advisor ___________________________________________________________________________ 18 The Annual National Service For Seafarers In St Paul’s Cathedral Wednesday 12th October 2011 (at the earlier time of 17.00) This year‟s Service will be held in St Paul‟s Cathedral at 1700 on Wednesday 12 October 2011 by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter. The Service will be conducted by the Reverend Andrew Wright, Mission Chaplain to The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. Attendees of the Service are requested to provide their first and surnames and to bring photographic identification (passport, photographic driving licence, RNA membership card) as proof of identity MAY be required). The new National Standard will parade. If you would like to apply for tickets please let us know at RNA HQ, by Friday 9 September at the latest.
19 How to get away with it! HQ recently received a letter from the Japan branch, apologising for the delay in submitting their annual returns. “The delay in holding the AGM and consequently in submitting these reports was occasioned by disruption to business and personal schedules resulting from the earthquake and 11
tsunami of March 11; we appreciate your patience in this regard”. We await the remaining late returns with interest!
20 RBL & SSAFA Caseworkers Shipmates, It is hoped to compile a list of all SSAFA or RBL trained caseworkers within our membership. If you are a trained caseworker would you please let our National Welfare Advisor (Rita Lock) know directly or through your Branch Secretary. Do you have a Branch Welfare Officer or in fact any member of your Branch who would be willing to undergo training and become a caseworker? Being an active caseworker can be very rewarding and a wonderful opportunity to give something back to your shipmates and the naval community. 21 Northern Ireland Veterans’ Association - Service of Remembrance 17 Sept 2011 This year‟s service will be held at 11.30am on Saturday 17th September 2011 at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire. The service will commemorate and remember all those who lost their lives in service of the Crown as a result of the conflict in N. Ireland. The service will be followed by a parade down to the Ulster Ash Grove for the laying of wreaths. Following the laying of the wreaths, there will be a 15 minute pause before the parade forms up for the return march to the visitor centre during which the guest of honour will take the salute. The service is open to all and all Associations are welcome to parade their standards. It would be appreciated if Associations arranging for groups of their members to attend could notify us of numbers and confirm if their standard will be parading. We look forward to welcoming you to our annual memorial service, For further information please visit our website at: www.nivets.org.uk
22 Royal Hospital School, Holbrook Greenwich Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, over the next couple of years, will be staging several „extraordinary‟ or „special‟ events to celebrate their tercentenary. As small group of classmates already in touch, we are aiming hold a reunion at Holbrook over the weekend of 23/24 June 2012 and to extend an invitation to as many of „Class 5A circa 1960‟ as possible. Email address; class5A1960@gmail.com which has been set up purely to locate ex members of Class 5A and pass on relative information. In writing, and for those ex members of the Royal Hospital School not necessarily tied into Class 5A, I am hoping that you will be able to include the contact details of Mr Rob Mann who 12
works at the School and can help trace old school mates, or give details of the programme being arranged for the School‟s Tercentenary celebrations (RHS300) of which he is involved. His contact details are rjm@royalhospitalschool.org and he would welcome any communication with former Holbrook students.
23 Devonport – Field Gun Museum Dear All, I am writing to inform you of the imminent closure of the Devonport Field Gun Museum currently within the Naval Dockyard at South Yard near Granby Gate. This has suddenly, come about due to the MOD wanting the building for upgrading etc.. we have therefore had to hurriedly try to find a new home. Should we not move out by the end of July 2011 the MOD will dispose of all the memorabilia and equipment as they see fit. Happily I can inform you that we have found a new venue at “Crownhill Fort” in Plymouth. This does however come at a price and as we are only a very small Association these costs would be very difficult for us. We are therefore seeking “Friends of Devonport Field Gun Museum” by making an annual donation or we are happy to receive any donations be they big or small. This will allow us to keep a complete set of “Running Gear” and all the memorabilia in top condition and available to be seen not only by the members of all RN Associations but the public also. We hope that you can help us on our way to uphold and maintain the Naval Heritage and History of the “Boer War and the RN Legacy” that of, “Command Field Gun” Donations and cheques can be sent to, Mr B O‟Hara, 38, The Hoe, Carpenders Park, Watford, WD19 5AY made payable to : “Devonport Field Gun Association”, with a covering letter, stating that the donations are for the Museum. You may also like to contact the Association Secretary Vic "Barney" Barnett 5 Weir Close, Mainstone, Plymouth, Devon, PL6 8SD, Tel; 01752 708206.
24 On line donations You can now make an on-line donation to the RNA at http://www.bmycharity.com/charities/rna This may be passed to family, friends or when a memorial donation is a good idea.

Welfare Report Welfare Update (Part 1) You may have heard about the Armed Forces Covenant and the PM‟s statement about it. This summary in two parts is a personal view on it, the changes and questions arising. What is the Military Covenant? This promises a duty of care to the Armed Forces but was not legally binding. It only officially applied to the Army, but its core principles extended to the Navy and Air Force. It states soldiers will be called upon to make personal sacrifices including the ultimate sacrifice - and that they and their families should expect fair treatment and to be valued, respected and properly rewarded What has changed? The PM has announced that the Military Covenant is now to be Armed Forces. This should have happened long ago as the previous Military Covenant based on trust has lapsed with successive governments taking the loyalty and sacrifice of the forces for granted and the principles of military covenant. Many material provisions have been the subject of previous government‟s directives and guidance to agencies such as the NHS. It was however been left up to them to implement them or not. Is it good news? Yes, if the government carries though on this pledge and introduces appropriate legislation. It will go some way to restore the sense of trust between the Armed Forces and the government assuming real implementation of the changes. Is it “new” news? No, not all. Many of the specific measures to be formally announced or reannounced soon such as priority NHS treatment for forces personnel and their families previously existed in principle. Others such as council tax rebates for all personnel serving abroad; guaranteed places at schools of choice for forces children; a promise to pay forces' widows a pension for life and giving service families priority in allocating council houses seem to be new. Is it preferential treatment? Yes and no. Yes it is in one sense but soldiers, sailors and airmen do not whinge for preferential treatment but they and their families deserve to get this support and treatment in return for the extraordinary commitment they make in the interests of our national security. What is covered? Compensation at an adequate level through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme which is a tariff based lump sum system for injuries. The more seriously injured can receive for life a monthly tax-free, index-linked Guaranteed Income Payment which is not capped. Rules have been changed to ensure multiple injuries are paid for all injuries. These payments are not affected by payment of civil damages for proven negligence by MOD causing injury, illness or death. The time for claiming has been improved with up to 5 years to claim and discretion to extend that for certain late onset illnesses or where the claimant has been unable to submit a claim due to illness. Medical support and treatment is provided through Defence Medical Services in the frontline and on return through MOD Hospital Units located in NHS hospitals and in remaining MOD hospital establishments and rehabilitation centres. MOD intends to meet Armed Force individual wishes for continued engagement as far as possible but, where this is not possible, is improving links between MOD and NHS to ensure a good transfer of care and patient history with dedicated Case Officers and specialist Social Workers to support returning to civilian life. Other areas in the next update are Mental Health Support, Reservist Healthcare, Veteran‟s Healthcare, Inquests and support for bereaved families and Accommodation provision. Geoff Apperley, Royston Branch Welfare Officer & Area 6 Welfare Officer General Secretary Note: 14
It is very likely that the Covenant will not apply to those living in Northern Ireland since the Good Friday agreement does not allow members of the Armed Forces to get preferential treatment. We are trying to clarify with MoD, NCM12 is available for advice if needed for branches in NI.

On 10 July 1911, King George V granted the title of 'Royal Australian Navy'. During World War I, the RAN was initially responsible for capturing many of Germany's South Pacific colonies and protecting Australian shipping from the German East Asia Squadron. Later in the war, most of the RAN's major ships operated as part of Royal Navy forces in the Mediterranean and North Seas. During the 1920s and early 1930s, the RAN was drastically reduced in size. As international tensions increased, however, the RAN was modernised and expanded. Early in World War II, RAN ships again operated as part of the Royal Navy, many serving with distinction in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the West African coast, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War and the virtual destruction of the Royal Navy force in Asia, the RAN operated more independently, or as part of United States Navy forces. By war's end, the RAN was the fifth-largest navy in the world. 24
After World War II, the size of the RAN was again reduced, but it gained new capabilities with the delivery of two aircraft carriers. The RAN saw action in many Cold War-era conflicts in the Asia-Pacific region and operated alongside the Royal Navy and United States Navy off Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. Since the end of the Cold War, the RAN has been part of Coalition forces in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean and has become a critical element in Australian operations in East Timor and the Solomon Islands. Today, the RAN is one of the largest and most sophisticated naval forces in the Pacific region, with a significant presence in the Indian Ocean and worldwide operations in support of military campaigns and peacekeeping missions. Wikipedia lists the ships as: - 8 ANZAC class frigates; 6 Adelaide class frigates; 14 patrol boats; 6 mine-hunters; 6 Collins class submarines; 6 heavy landing craft; 6 survey ships; 1 landing ship, heavy; 1 amphibious transport; and 2 replenishment ships. (Is this more than the RN?) What was the Fleet Air Arm is now officially the Australian Navy Aviation Group. It has three squadrons operating 4 types of helicopter. These choppers are operated from frigates, large amphibious craft and support ships. The current Chief of Navy is Vice Admiral Ray Giggs
MISSING LIFE AT SEA? Here's how to recapture the atmosphere of the old days and simulate living on board again 1. Build a shelf in the top of your wardrobe and sleep on it inside a smelly sleeping bag. Remove the wardrobe door and replace it with a curtain that's too small. 2. Wash your underwear every night in a bucket, then hang it over the water pipes to dry. 3. Four hours after you go to bed, have your wife whip open the curtain, shine a torch into your eyes and say "sorry mate wrong pit". 4. Renovate your bathroom. Build a wall across the centre of your bath and move the showerhead down to chest level. Store beer barrels in the shower enclosure. 5. When you have a shower, remember to turn the water off while you soap. 6. Every time there is a thunderstorm, sit in a wobbly rocking chair and rock as hard as you can until you are sick. 7. Put oil instead of water into a humidifier, and then set it to 'HIGH'. 8. Don't watch TV, except for films in the middle of the night. For added realism, have your family vote for which film they want to see - then select a different one. 9. (Mandatory for engineering types). Leave a lawnmower running in your living room for 24 hours a day to recreate the proper noise levels. 10. Have the paperboy give you a haircut.
25
11. Once a week, blow compressed air up through your chimney. Ensure the wind carries the soot over onto your neighbour's house. When he complains, laugh at him. 12. Buy a rubbish compactor, but only use it once a week. Store your rubbish in the other side of your bath. 13. Wake up every night and make a sandwich out of anything you can find, preferably using stale bread. Optional: cold soup or tinned ravioli eaten from the can. 14. Devise your family menus a week in advance without looking in the fridge or larder. 15. Set your alarm clock to go off at random times throughout the night. When it goes off, leap out of bed, get dressed as fast as you can, then run out into the garden and break out the garden hose. 16. Once a month, take every major household appliance completely apart, and then reassemble it. 17. Use four spoons of coffee per cup and allow to stand for three hours before drinking. 18. Invite about 85 people you don't really like to come and stay for a couple of months. 19. Install a small fluorescent light under your coffee table, and then lie under the table to read books. 20. Raise the thresholds and lower the top sills of all doors in the house. Now you will always either hit your head or skin your shins when passing through them. 21. When baking cakes, prop up one side of the cake tin whilst it is baking. When it has cooled, spread icing really thickly on one side to level it out again. 22. Every so often throw your cat in the bath and shout "man overboard", then run into the kitchen and sweep all the dishes and pans onto the floor whilst yelling at your wife for not having properly secured for sea. 23. Put on the headphones from your stereo, do not plug them in. Go and stand in front of your dishwasher. Say to nobody in particular, "Dishwasher manned and ready, Sir". Stand there for three or four hours. Say, once again to nobody in particular, "Dishwasher secured". Remove headphones, roll up headphone cord and put them away. 24. Nickname your favourite shoes 'steamies', and then get your children to hide them around the house on a random basis.
