Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, As the main holiday period draws to a close, our thoughts turn to the many activities for the autumn term. I hope to see as many as possible at the Biennial Parade on 11 September at the Cenotaph, no problem with numbers, so come along. We will have other Associations marching with us and the Irish Naval Association and the President of the Naval Association of Australia. Please be at Whitehall Place by 1000. Due to popular demand we will have a third open day on 4 November, please bookup with us, although we are happy to see you when you are in the area. We expect to have welcomed over 300 members to the HQ this year, an increase of 290 over Chelsea Manor Street!! Please don’t forget to get your bids for the November Cenotaph to us; we are already close to full allocation of tickets. I am delighted to say that the website is up and running and has had many positive comments. Most of the RNA materials, including the templates for the new look logos, headed paper, circulars etc are in the ‘Members Area’. You will be prompted for a password in order to download the item, please use ‘shipmate’. You may pass this freely to RNA members, but not to others (they haven’t paid for it!!). We intend that as soon as an item of interest to Branch Secretaries is known, that it will be put onto the website as a ‘Daily Order’. We are in the process of setting up an automated e-mail system that will alert you when a Daily Order has been published – if we don’t have your e-mail address please let us have it. Please check your branch page on the website to ensure it has all the info you want and that your e-mail is known. You can use your branch page as a free website and post news and events onto it. Just forward what you want to our webmaster or the HQ staff and we will put it on. Same goes for Area news. No compulsion, just a nice free service. The website also has nice pictures of all our slops if you are not sure what is available. Congratulations to Shipmate Don Weaver the Hon Sec of Stourbridge Branch who has completed a model of the Queen Elizabeth class carrier. He had to do a last minute change when the SDSR announced that the design would move away from the ramp to conventional launch. A swift call from the Gen Sec to a mate in the Carrier design team got the info needed. Well done Don. You will have heard of our Shipmates Campaign at Conference, and I am aware that you have not heard anything official yet. The campaign is aimed to introduce every service leaver to his or her local RNA branch, for advice, guidance, info and comradeship during this difficult time. We are in the process of finalising the details with the RN, which is why you haven’t had anything yet. We will be producing a comprehensive info pack for each Branch Secretary. Our new AGS, Andy Christie is working on this as his main point of effort. The good news is that there will be a £5 grant for each sailor/marine that you introduce to your branch under this scheme! I hope that you are all working hard at the Member-Get-Member Campaign, if you want more materials, or items for an event, please give us a call, we have lots of good stuff for you. Your PRO can contact S/M Steve Caulfield for the main pull-up banners or the large exhibition style lighted pop-up display. Have a great September and see you in London!!

The RM Band Service are very excited about it as this will be the first album they have done under the Decca record label. The RAF and the Guards Bands have some considerable exposure and success with their albums over the last 18 months. They certainly got a lot of increased positive profile on national TV. They hope that this album will have a very positive effect for the Naval Service both past and present, which in turn should generate more interest in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and respectively the RNA & the RMA. Details to follow when we have them.

10.  Repatriations at RAF Brize Norton You may be aware that repatriations will start at from RAF Brize Norton from 1 September 2011. There has been some concer in the national press that there will be inadequate recognition for repatriated service personnel killed on service. There has been a briefing by the Air Station on what will happen in the future for widows, families and other service charities. The RMA have attended and are sure that MOD in general and the RAF in particular are doing all they can to make repatriations work well, very much in contrast to what you might have read in the press. No expense has been spared in a new reception centre in a quiet part of a 7

very busy air station. In fact the C17s have a new apron on which to park. The centre is brand new and has been very well thought through. The route to the brand new exit is sensible and saves the hearses having to compete with station traffic. In addition the exit/entrance (which will only be used for repatriations) is brand new, well landscaped and has the families in mind. The route through Carterton has been well planned and new memorial is being built where the local people and veteran organisations can pay their respects too. This is being very well handled and much thought and care has gone into it. So much so, that there will be a number of rehearsals in August. The Station Commander is particularly sensitive to his responsibilities and you should be very reassured. The RAF and the local councils are doing our casualties proud.

11. Calling all Branch Secretaries To assist new branch secretaries the AMC has commissioned the production of a handbook for branch officials. To avoid reinventing the wheel and make best use of all the experience of our current branch secretaries, would you send any contributions you have to Nigel at HQ. These might range from a calendar of ‘to dos’ and vital annual dates, to hints and tips on keeping your membership list in date. All contributions gratefully received. . Nigel says thanks to the one secretary that has sent in observations but we do require more, so sec’s please play a part !! . .

12. The Quality of our young Royal Marines Just thought I'd share this experience with you. Recently, I was travelling by train from Aberdeen to Glasgow. As usual, “Scotrail” had insufficient coaches to cope with the crowds; it was to be standing all the way. Feeling very sorry for myself, at Arbroath, I noticed a young man board the train, with a camouflaged rucksack. All during this journey, there were numerous loud complaints about the situation on the train. Eventually I found myself alongside this young man. I noticed from his tag on his rucksack, he was a member of Zulu Coy, 45 Cdo RM. I introduced myself, as a former member of the Royal Marines, and 45 in particular. To cut a long story short, he was on his way home to recover from shrapnel wounds to his legs. (He showed them to me) To say I felt humble would be putting it mildly, when I think of the complaints of fellow passengers, and my own attitude to the situation, while this young man remained uncomplaining, despite the severity of his injuries, throughout the 2.5hr journey. On arrival, I asked if I could be of any assistance, he very kindly thanked me, but refused. My last sight of him was limping his way through the crowds, before he disappeared. I hope this young man (I didn't get his name) recovers quickly, as he wished, for he wanted to re-join his Oppos ASAP. “Good luck to them all”. Name and address supplied

17  Royal Hospital School, Holbrook Greenwich Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, over the next couple of years, will be staging several ‘extraordinary’ or ‘special’ events to celebrate their tercentenary. As small group of classmates already in touch, we are aiming hold a reunion at Holbrook over the weekend of 23/24 June 2012 and to extend an invitation to as many of ‘Class 5A circa 1960’ as possible. Email address; class5A1960@gmail.com which has been set up purely to locate ex members of Class 5A and pass on relative information. In writing, and for those ex members of the Royal Hospital School not necessarily tied into Class 5A, I am hoping that you will be able to include the contact details of Mr Rob Mann who works at the School and can help trace old school mates, or give details of the programme being arranged for the School’s Tercentenary celebrations (RHS300) of which he is involved. His contact details are rjm@royalhospitalschool.org and he would welcome any communication with former Holbrook students.

18  Bookbinder Boss Frank Raine is trying to find an existing bookbinders Boss for use with his memorial project. His father-in-law, Mr James Reed, is an ex-RN Gunnery Instructor who joined the RN as a Boy Sailor at 15 years old. He saw service right through WWII and served in many campaigns such as Atlantic Convoys, Rescue of the King of Norway and Far East conflicts. When he came home, it was well after the war had ended so he missed all the festivities and arrived in a very different world to start a family. At 89 years he is now determined to get a permanent memorial to the RN Boys aged 15 - 16 years who lost their lives in Service. There are 534 of these Boys on record. 10

We are currently creating a Book of Remembrance and have been advised to use the "Standard design for use on Royal Navy War Memorials" as an insignia for the memorial. We are now looking for a brass "Bookbinders Block" of this insignia so that we may have an embossed insignia pressed into the cover of the Book of Remembrance. We have been told by the Naval Museum that all the bosses have been thrown away. It is hard to believe a historical item such as a brass insignia boss would have been thrown away. Does anyone know where he might find a boss for use? If you can help then please contact: Frank Raine at frank_raine@flotsom.plus.com

This will be suitable for block bookings. This will cover mid-range hotels but not the many B&B in Jesmond and towards the Coast. Newcastle has an excellent metro system and the venues are very central, just opposite the Central Station. The local branch contact is Shipmate Jimi Tubman, his e-mail is jimi-tubman@hotmail.co.uk

Pusser’s Rum new donation to the Tot Fund On a bright, sunny day in Portsmouth Historic Naval Dockyard Charles Tobias, President and Founder of Pusser’s Rum, stood on the deck of HMS Victory and handed over a cheque for £25,000 to the Tot Fund (Royal Navy Sailors Fund). The donation was accepted by Rear Admiral David Steel CBE, Naval Secretary and Chief of Staff. The Fund was set up by the Admiralty as recompense for discontinuing the longest lasting tradition in the Royal Navy, serving a daily rum tot to sailors on H.M. ships. Apart from the interest generated on the original capital sum, Pusser’s donations are the Fund’s largest source of income. Since 1981 Pusser’s have donated well over £1 million to the Fund which provides amenities for

Charles Tobias served as a pilot following enlistment in the US Marines, flying sorties in the Vietnam conflict, where he lost a lot of good comrades. Because of his marines background, Pusser’s also makes substantial donations to a US Marines charity. It is not generally known that half of Pusser’s profits go to charity. Is there any alcohol brand anywhere that gives so generously to charity? Rear Admiral David Steel CBE receives the Pusser’s donation from Charles Tobias

Gold for Pusser’s Rum in global competition At this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition Pusser’s Rums won Gold. The Pusser’s 15 Year Old Rum was judged the Best Extra-Aged Rum for which it won a Double Gold Medal. Furthermore Pusser’s regular 42% ABV Rum won a Gold Medal for quality. There were 1,106 premium spirits entries from 61 countries in the 11th

running of the competition. The judges required 3 days to complete their deliberations. The event is the oldest, largest and most recognised spirits competition held in the USA and these medals are highly prized. Ben Pick, Pusser’s

Ben Pick, Pusser’s UK Brand Manager

UK Brand Manager said: “This is a great double win for a truly unique rum and came shortly after the news that the President of Pusser’s Rum, Charles Tobias had been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Honours List this year. Bars stocking Pusser’s Rum will be pleased to hear that a large panel of experts have picked out the brand above other rums for these accolades”.

141-Year old cannons and 9 gun salutes honour Arctic Conveys 1941-1945

The salutes were fired on board HMS Belfast as veterans of the infamous Arctic Conveys gathered from the UK and Russia to commemorate those comrades who gave their lives to keep the Russians supplied with food and weapons in WW II. During the ceremony HRH The Duke of Kent read out a personal letter of greetings from H. M. The Queen, and the veterans were greeted by the Russian Ambassador H.E. Alexander

Yakovenko and Admiral Lord West. The Ambassadors of Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Moldava were also present. Two Russian veterans of these convoys , Yury Kopytov and Viktor Popov, flew from Archangelsk for the ceremony. The Royal Artillery Band played the Russian and British national anthems and then the veterans and guests toasted the victory with Pusser’s Rum and Russian Standard Vodka.

Charles attends the Palace for his MBE 1st June 2011 was a memorable day for Charles Tobias, President of Pusser’s Rum. It was the day on which he was invested with the MBE for services to the Royal Navy and to his home community of the British Virgin Islands. Accompanied by his wife Joanna, and close longtime friend Vice Admiral Mike Gretton, Charles received his MBE from H.M. The Queen. He was then invited for a glass of champagne and a visit to the famous room behind the balcony where Royalty wave to the crowds on The Mall. Apart from supporting the Royal Navy charity every year since the introduction of Pusser’s Rum commercially in 1980, Charles is a

leading benefactor in the British Virgin Islands through his involvement with local employment and tourism. He served for 6 years on the BVI Tourist Board as Director of the Marketing Committee. He also created Pusser’s Landing with its restaurants and bars and a line of nautical and tropical clothing, employing about 250 people. He has contributed time and funds to numerous BVI charities and served for 3 years on the first board of governors of the local Community College.

PUSSER’S AND THE SPIRIT OF SCOTT OF THE A NTA RCT IC Pusser’s Rum will be taken to Antarctica this year by a team of British servicemen when they undertake a historic trek to celebrate the centenary of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his trek to the South Pole. Whilst in the Antarctic on January 17 2012 the team of 24 soldiers, sailors and airmen will toast their achievement and the memory of Scott’s British heroes with Pusser’s Rum. As the traditional rum of the Royal Navy Captain Scott would have had a supply of Pusser’s on his epic journey for the daily tot in true naval tradition. Pusser’s Rum will also be the toast spirit at a dinner on board HMS Victory, Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship on 23 June.

Pusser’s Rum – rum– P u s s e r’ s

the early years If it wasn’t for Charles Tobias and his love for the original rum of the Royal Navy, Pusser’s Rum would never have come to public prominence. He made Pusser’s available to the public for the first time in 1980, since when it has been widely acclaimed. It is nice to

look back occasionally on those early days and to thank Charles for his foresight in keeping the original navy rum still flowing.

Launched in Tortola. Pusser’s Rum was launched commercially in Tortola, West Indies in 1980. To mark the occasion the Admiralty allowed the frigate HMS Ambuscade, captained by Commander Mike Gretton, to visit Tortola. This is the same Vice Admiral Mike Gretton who accompanied Charles Tobias to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE in June this year. l to r: Commander Mike Gretton, Captain of HMS Ambuscade, Charles Tobias and the late George Lacey then a partner in E.D.& F. Divvyesh Chauhan, Bar Manager at Match Bar with the Pusser’s Blue Label navy rum

If Pusser’s is on the back bar you can be sure it is a favourite with the bar manager. Divvyesh Chauhan has managed the Match Bar just off London’s Regent Street for over 2 years and knows how well Pusser’s Rum goes down with rum lovers, male and female alike. They drink it neat, on ice and in cocktails. He can make a mean Painkiller if asked and also makes a special Planter’s Punch with rum, a mix of lime, Angostura bitters and grated nutmeg served over crushed ice and topped with an extra pour of Pusser’s. He says Pusser’s goes down even better when served in the special Pusser’s Mugs he keeps for favourite customers.
