Branch Circular No 612
September 2011
1
Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, Welcome to the September Circular. It was great to see such a good turn-out at the Biennial Parade at the Cenotaph. Despite a poor weather forecast 2 days before the event, the day itself was warm and sunny. The arrangements with the Met Police were faultless and we had 350+ Shipmates, 60 Standards and paraded four National Standards (RNA, RMA, WRNS and Irish Naval Association). We marched behind the Llanelli BBL band, who did us proud. The Chaplain of the Fleet took the Service and the First Sea Lord took the Review and talked to the Shipmates afterwards, thanking them for their support and service. The National President then led the RNA in 3 cheers for the Naval Service and had all 400+ people cheering at the tops of their voices so they could be heard in No10 and 11 Downing Street! We all retired for a glass of lemonade in the Civil Service Club, where everyone had the chance to meet and chat to the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope. We also enjoyed good weather in Portsmouth for our second HQ open day, welcoming 25 shipmates from as far afield as 10 Area. A tour of the offices and a chat over sandwiches was followed by a tour of the harbour in a MOD boat, getting right amongst the ships alongside and even HMS ALLIANCE at the submarine museum in Haslar creek. The last Open day for 2011 is on 4 November, please book now. Enclosed with this Circular is a very important document ‘A Branch Guide to the Shipmates Campaign’. Hopefully this will fully explain the branch role in this vitally important support and recruiting campaign aimed at those leaving the Service. By the time you read this Circular about 1,600 sailors will have found out that they are leaving the Navy in the next 6 to 12 months, we want to do our best to help them manage the difficult transition to civilian life the best that we can. Please read carefully, any problems or questions please give a call to the Gen Sec or Andy. Don’t forget that for every service leaver that you introduce to your branch there is a £5 bonus. We are fast approaching the Remembrance season. If your branch would like to place a cross on the RNA garden of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey the details are in the Circ, or even send someone along, we have places available. Tickets are also still available for the Cenotaph March, apply soon please, we will have an RNA corner in the Civil Service Club afterwards. You might like to learn that the Commodore of HMS COLLINGWOOD has approached the RNA to provide mentors for their Phase 2 trainees (professional courses). The idea is to inspire our young people by chatting, or being guided by, those who have served at sea, in war, operations and peace. We have approached the local branches and meet shortly to explore the way ahead. A great example of the MOU working for closer relations between the RNA and the RN. The new website is settling down nicely and we have received lots of positive comments about its bright and easy-to-follow layout. Remember that if you or any of your branch want to download any item, or the new Member-Get-Member materials, that the password is ‘shipmate’. Also we are delighted to post news and info on your branch page, just call in and it will be on the website in a jiffy. Finally we have welcomed the WRNS Association to Semaphore Tower, who have settled in quickly. It is great to have them next door. Don’t forget the clocks go back on Sunday 30 October!

C hairman’s C hat After a successful 2011 Conference weekend and the usual summer break season we now embark on the drive to fully implement the initiatives we have started over the past year. The new website is up and running and being further developed by our hard working webmaster, Chris Hore. There is opportunity for Area and Branch information to be added to it so feed any data you want displayed to HQ. We have been asked by the Cdre of HMS COLLINGWOOD to provide mentoring to Part 2 trainees, following on from the success we have had with new entry trainees at RALEIGH. A meeting with Chairmen of Area 3 Branches near to COLLINGWOOD has been arranged to set this in place. The Shipmates campaign swings into action at the end of September with the notification to the first tranche of redundees, and HQ will be sending out guidelines to branches for implementing this exciting project. We have been asked by the Royal Navy to extend this to all their Service leavers, and we will be provided with names, addresses and email contacts with all those leaving the RN. This is something we have been trying to achieve out of the MOU RN since its inception and not only do we now have it but we are being asked by the RN to do more. We have further initiatives in the pipeline to discuss with the 2nd Sea Lord so our working relationship with the RN is going from strength to strength. It is up to us all to deliver on our side of this bargain and I have confidence that you will all embrace it with enthusiasm. The Biennial Parade in Whitehall was a great success, with about 70 Standards and some 350+ shipmates on parade, with the review taken by the 1st Sea Lord who addressed the parade afterwards. After some worrying weather forecasts earlier in the week we were blessed with glorious sunshine and blue skies, “The sun shines on the righteous.” said our new National Ceremonial Officer, Mick Kieran! His first parade went very well, though he had to dash to the front of the parade and stop the band who began marching off on the wrong order! We were joined by 60 members of the Irish Naval Association, along with their National Standard, and they had a great time. We are hoping to organise a return visit to one of their big parades. After some of them being a little apprehensive about how they would be received they were overwhelmed by the generosity and friendship extended by our shipmates, and we made it clear that they will be very welcome to join us at any time in the future. We also had the recently retired President and Chairman (a joint post) of the Royal Australian Naval Association, Les Dwyer, join us as a VIP guest, and he also visited Semaphore Tower earlier in the week. It was very interesting to hear that the NAA have suffered the same issues that we are going through and that they are about 10 years further down the line in reinvigorating their Naval Veteran associations, and achieving many benefits as a result. It took them those 10 years to convince the Australian Naval veteran community to work together to present a united voice on veterans issues, and reap the rewards. We have a lot of work ahead of us to gain that level of success, but our ship is beginning to make headway. Another very successful Open Day was held in HQ on 16 September, and once again the sun shone on the righteous for a glorious boat ride around the harbour. I think everyone was impressed with the facilities we have in Semaphore Tower, and what great value it provides, not just financially but also in our having easy access to the RN command structure. There are still places available for the extra Open Day on 4th November, though we can’t guarantee the same weather! Finally, I would like to express the sincere thanks of both myself and Keith Crawford for the warm and receptive welcomes we have received on our Area visits in our first year in office. 3
We have been to nine different areas, have two more in the pipeline and just two left to visit, one of which was planned for early September but had to be rearranged at the request of the Area. Having been re-elected at the September National Council meeting Keith and I are keen to continue to make ourselves and the whole of the National Council much more accessible to the membership at large. The RNA is a wholly democratic organisation and we want to encourage the wider membership to become much more involved with its governance structures. Thank you for your support and very kind good wishes to both Keith and me over the past year and we look forward to meeting many more of you in the coming year.
Chris Dovey
Joining Routine Finally I am delighted to announce Lt Cdr Andy Christie has joined the HQ as a new AGS. He has just completed 36 years service serving for 24 years as a rating in the Stores Branch and was selected Warrant Office before being commissioned 12 years ago as an SUY (SD) officer. The highlights of Andy’s career included seeing action in the Falklands Campaign in HMS GLSAGOW and somehow managing to ‘loaf’ for three years in HMS Malabar Bermuda…. , as Andy said “Someone had to do it”. He is really looking forward to working in the HQ and has already got stuck into the Shipmates Campaign for starters. A season ticket holder, at top of the championship, Southampton FC, Andy lives with his wife and family in Lee on the Solent.

2. Irish Naval Association - Biennial Parade – 11 September 2011 The General Secretary has received this message from the Irish Naval Association: “We would like to thank you all for looking after us so well during our visit to commemorate your Bi-Annual commemoration Parade to the Cenotaph. It was obvious you gave special attention to our visit and everyone was aware of the privileged position you placed our association on the day as you did with our colours. It was a special occasion for our association and for our President Gerry Kennedy to have the privilege of laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. It went very well and hopefully you will think of the Irish Naval Association should any occasion arise that we can visit again Hope you like my little piece and photographs on our website. “ http://homepage.eircom.net/~navalassociation/index.htm Terry Cummins National PRO Irish Naval Association 00-353-879873884
3. New CD release from the Royal Marines Band The Band of HM Royal Marines will be releasing a new CD Album called ‘Sailing’ later this year. The RM Band Service is very excited about it as this will be the first album they have done under the Decca record label. The RAF and the Guards Bands have some considerable exposure and success with their albums over the last 18 months. They certainly got a lot of increased positive profile on national TV. They hope that this album will have a very positive effect for the Naval Service both past and present, which in turn should generate more interest in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and respectively the RNA & the RMA. Details to follow of how you may obtain the album.

5. HQ Open Day- 4 November 2011 The HQ will be holding another open day on Friday 4 November starting at 11am. Come along to Semaphore Tower for the chance to meet HQ staff. Please register your interest with Andy or Nigel asap, so we know we have enough for the day. We have managed to book a MoD boat for a tour of the harbour and dockyard from 1230 to 1330 and the GS cold dead fingers might be prised away from a tot or two of Pusser’s. There are also sandwiches for lunch before the boat trip and tea/coffee after to warm up !
6. HMS Falmouth- Ships Bell We have received an enquiry from John Crawford, who was the last Jimmy in HMS Falmouth when she was de-commissioned (for the second time) in December 1984. He is particularly interested in tracing the ship's bell, as his son was christened in it. He thought (and hoped!) it would be hanging in our headquarters in Falmouth, but we have no knowledge of its whereabouts. I shall make enquiries locally, but if anyone has any useful information I would appreciate it. Ron Burdekin. 12 Battle of the Atlantic Statue How many Shipmates of the Royal Naval Association would like to be associated with the unveiling of a reproduction of this Sailor Statue? This Statue stands in Downtown, Halifax, Nova Scotia, overlooking the harbour where the Atlantic Convoys gathered before heading out to the North Atlantic. By kind permission of The Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers’ Association of Canada, the Londonderry Branch of The Royal Naval Association has started a project to erect a similar statue in the old naval base in Londonderry. Many of you will know that Londonderry played a critical role of supporting the convoy escort ships and their crews. The Sailor Statue will be dedicated to all those sailors who served and to those who made the supreme sacrifice, during the Battle of the Atlantic. Funding needs to be in place by February 2012 to have the statue built and in place for the unveiling in May 2013. Many of our Associates, who are a vital part of our Association, must have stories to tell of their life in the other Services or their jobs in ‘civvy street’ so let’s hear 'em.
