Branch Circular No 620 July 2012 1

Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, Welcome to the July circular, I hope you enjoy it – with lots of reports of successful Armed Forces Days and fun pictures of shipmates wearing the RNA cap. We fully used the 20,000 that I initially purchased in only 4 months and I have re-ordered and the caps/hats are in the HQ. Please let us know if you want any for events that you might be attending. As before, a contribution to postage is welcome but not vital. You will see from the title page that our National President has been modelling the new hat gizzit – it certainly makes me smile – and reports from around the country are that they are very well received. We can also provide a quality branded gazebo, pull up banners and a large pop up banner with lighting. If you want any or all of these please give the HQ staff a call. The Plymouth report in the Circ shows the big pop-up banner. Many congratulations to the many Branches turning out for Armed Forces Day, particularly for Branches in the Plymouth area – turnout has universally been smart and in the best traditions of the Association. Thank you for your efforts. In the last Circ I mentioned the official RNA Diamond Jubilee Certificate, which includes the recently discovered poem by John Masefield written for the RNA reunion of 1952 as Her Majesty awaited the Coronation. I enclose 3 copies for you to have and judge whether you would like them for some or all of your branch. If you would like to order the Diamond Jubilee Certificate please contact HQ (Nigel, Andy or me) and we will let you have them free of charge. We would welcome a contribution to postage please, particularly if you are asking for a significant number. We hope that you will take up this offer with enthusiasm. If Areas wish to pool their requests to ease distribution costs, it would be appreciated. A reminder to get your branch bids in for the Autumn ceremonies, Cenotaph, Field of Remembrance and the St Paul’s Seafarer service. Please get your bids into Nigel or Andy. The adverts for the Christmas cards and 2013 diaries will be in the August circular. You will also notice in the Circ that a previous General Secretary, Captain Bob McQueen CBE has crossed the bar, and that there was a good turn out by the RNA for his funeral, which was much appreciated by his family. Finally, another £10 M&S voucher for the funniest caption to this photo taken recently.

Kindest Regards Paul Quinn General Secretary

 An Idea for all RNA Area’s/Branches - Free Advertisement

Having contacted the Local Radio Station, 'Radio Tulip' to enquire the cost of advertising over the air, the branch president and myself were asked to call in and discuss details etc. Surprise! Surprise! on arrival we were amazed to discovered that we were doing a Free hour long "Chat Show" regarding the RNA at both national and local level, to be broadcasted in two to three weeks time. Could be something other Branches may wish to attempt. Regards, Keith Crawford. National Vice Chairman

 Armed Forces Day – Plymouth RNA

Our Association Stand which was in a prime position within the Veterans Village was a great success thanks to the support of so many of our enthusiastic members, optimising the opportunity to extol the virtues not only of our Branch but of our Association. In excess of 30,000 people attended on the Saturday and the Stand was a hive of activity throughout the Day. Many visitors to the Stand became aware for the first time of the Association, our Branch Social scene was highlighted , Mentoring activities at Raleigh and also the Welfare Support we provide. Over 400 new style RNA `advertising’ hats were “Old Shipmates - Spinning Dits” dispatched to the youngsters and we ran out before the end of the Day. Both Admiral McAnally and the Plymouth Secretary were interviewed by BFBS live at different times ensuring that our Forces wherever deployed were aware of our Association presence at this National event. Arthur Gutteridge BEM.

ď ? Two Pershore Stalwarts receive National RNA recognition

Pershore & District Royal Naval Association celebrated the tenth anniversary of the formation of their branch on Sunday 1 July with a Sea Sunday Service, pig roast and war-time sing-a-long in the afternoon. Making the most of the sunny weather, branch members mustered on the patio where local bugler Alice Bull, who is a student at Pershore High School, played as 2 young Cadets raised the United Services flag and the White Ensign. The service was led by Branch Chaplain Canon Richard Etheridge to which honoured guests also attended including the National RNA Chairman Chris Dovey, Officers of RNA Area 8, Officers of Pershore Royal British Legion and District Councillors. At the end of the service, Chris Dovey made a special presentation to Ted Annis who not only started the Branch but has chaired it for the last 10 years. Ted was awarded a Life time Membership of the Royal Naval Association in recognition for all the hard work that he has done. His wife Margaret also received an award. As an Associate Member, she was honoured to receive the Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of all the hard work and support that she has given. These awards were one of the best kept secrets of the Branch and had taken 5 months to organise with secret meetings held without their knowledge. Ted and Margaret were also given gifts from the branch as another token of appreciation.

Mrs Margaret Annis, the National RNA Chairman Chris Dovey and Ted Annis with their respective awards

Ted said afterwards "I had absolutely no idea what was coming - I can't believe that you've had secret meetings without the Chairman and nobody has let it slip! Margaret and I are so genuinely touched to have these awards and it's all I can do not to cry. The formation of our branch came about after my eldest daughter Wendy joined me up for my Birthday in 2002. From that, I got in touch with Mike Bradford who I served with on board HMS Belfast and we were amazed to find that we'd only lived half a mile from each other for all these years. Together with my younger daughter Trudy, we put a piece in the local papers to see if there were other ex Naval people in the area who would like to form a branch and our first ever meeting was in the White Horse Hotel. 25 people attended from Pershore, Evesham and around the villages so it was decided to call the Branch "Pershore and District". Within 12 months, we had 100 members and we've maintained roughly that figure for the last 10 years although this year we have had a big 6

increase of people joining up. We take supporting our troops, Remembrance and the British Legion's Poppy Appeal very seriously but we also like to have some good fun which is what I think makes our Branch so successful. Things like entering a float into this year's Carnival although we all got told off by our "Captain" Trudy for being on parade with glasses of wine because she's a bit of a stickler like that and keeps us all on our toes. One of our first fund-raising campaigns was to buy our Standard which we had formally blessed in 2003 and then we've gone on to raise around £70,000 over the last 10 years for local charities. Of course the opening of our Social Club, the grand VE60 Parade in 2005 with the Royal Marines Band and the creation and the opening of Pershore Commemorative Garden have been particular hi-lights over the last 10 years. We're all extremely proud of what we've achieved and today is a day to celebrate all this". Over 150 people turned out through the day to enjoy a pig-roast lunch and a War-time sing-a-long routine with local singer Lynsey Leigh Davis where there was dancing, flag waving and general fun. The Branch meet on the first Wednesday of each month and membership forms can be obtained from Ted on 01386 552889. Press release issued by Mrs Trudy Burge - Hon Secretary Pershore & District Royal Naval Association

 Ashford RNA – Armed Forces Day

Thought you might be interested in some pictures taken during the Ashford Armed Forces Day event on Saturday. The Ex RMP in the scooter was captured as a ‘prize’ and commissioned into the RNA for the day with RNA colours (Cap) prominent. On the whole the day went well and we had a plentiful supply of ‘caps’, bookmarks, joining forms etc. to give away in return for a donation and thereby raise funds to donate to charities or for the Branch. We did collect some money in our collecting tins too. 6.  Cenotaph Ceremony – Sunday 11 November 2012 The Royal British Legion will once again be co-ordinating the Ex-Service Contingents attending the Cenotaph Ceremony & March Past on Sunday 11 November 2012. All those who have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces under British Command as well as War Widows / Widowers are eligible to take part. If any Shipmate would like tickets for this year’s Ceremony (limited number available) please let RNA HQ know (by letter or email) by 31 August at the latest, please include your name, address and telephone number and a list of those attending. If any of your members require a carer for the day 7

Charlie, Colin, Jane & George

(one carer per participant) they must also be in possession of a ticket. Please note that those parading are likely to be standing in Whitehall for at least 1½ hours prior to the March Past then marching for a distance of over 1 mile, and possibly in inclement weather (pretty well guaranteed this year!!!!!). Further parade instructions will be sent with your tickets which will be despatched towards the end of September. If you have any queries regarding the Cenotaph Ceremony then please contact Nigel, Andy or Philip at RNA HQ. Also note; RNA tickets will only be available for members (so join them up!) and it is expected that those with RNA tickets will march with the RNA squad

S/M Terry Halder – Life Vice Presidents Award

Shipmates will want to know that Shipmate Terry Halder was voted in as a Life Vice President of the RNA, by the National Council and was presented with a certificate during the National Conference in Newcastle upon Tyne. Terry was the National Council Member for 11 Area for many years – and played an important role in the Finance and Admin Committee. We have received this lovely e-mail from him after the Conference: ''Shipmates” Conference was a great success. On a personal note it was good to be with so many Navy friends. I felt very humbled by your comments, none more so than when our President, Vice Admiral John McNally, CB LVO, who presented me on behalf of National Council, with Life Vice President's Award. To all new Council members enjoy the work, to older hands guide them along, and above all be gracious. “Our leadership is very strong, treasure it.'' We have heard from Terry’s daughter Audrey that he would be over the moon to receive get well cards, it would make his day, since he has had to move to a residential home. Please send to: Audrey L Halder 40 Redbarn Drive, Osbaldwick, York, YO10 3JD 8.  RNA HQ Open Day - Thank You from Knowle Branch Received in the HQ.............. The Chairman of the Knowle branch will be writing to you shortly to thank you for our very nice reception on Friday 6th July. However I am contacting you by email beforehand to say how well 20 or so of us were treated on Friday at the HQ. The Queen could not have been offered more friendship, as we all thought we were royalty. Your staff is second to none and after our 3 8

hour journey they greeted us with a snack. We then had a short speech about the RNA today, followed by an Excellent Lunch. The boat trip was enjoyed by all, especially the TOT (Pusser’s of course) Followed by another Snack. We all had a few hours then in Pompey before returning home. I was in the RN and RNR and have only been in the RNA a short time, I have always found people always observe the RNA Motto, this obviously starts at the top at RNA HQ and filters down, Thank you (HQ Staff ) for a great day S/M Vic Hocking.

9. RNA Dagenham - Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Lapel Pin As the decision was made by Government that nobody outside of serving personnel would receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal, RNA-Dagenham thought it would be a nice keepsake for their members to commission a commemorative lapel pin. This was welcomed by HQ who ensured that the commission met with the “Brand Guidelines” and asked if the branch would be prepared to extend the offer to other branches. This they have done and it has been taken up by Chesham and Amersham, Spennymoor and Ferryhill and Orkney so far with five other branches showing an interest. 1. The minimum order, it is one pin. 2. This is officially sanctioned by the NC and HQ, and is the official Diamond Jubilee pin of the RNA. 3. This may be worn during the Diamond Jubilee year. There is no restriction on its wear by any member of the RNA, Life, Full or Associate. It may be given and worn by friends, neighbours and family. 4. Please help sell the pins, all profit to charity and Dagenham will give enough discount to benefit your own branch funds. If you would like further details or to order, please contact Mark Smith on either 07866 523975 or pro@rna-dagenham.org.uk The pins are priced at £2.00 to branches or £2.50 to individuals plus P&P. Pins are also available from Nigel at the HQ. They are very popular so some delay may occur. 10.  Woking RNA – Armed Forces & Veterans Day Woking branch of the Royal Naval Association held their annual Armed forces and Veterans Day Parade last Saturday 30th June in the New Town Square which is in the course of being completed, and was the first major event to be held in it since the rebuild. The Branch took the opportunity to use the parade to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the dedication of the Branch's new Standard The Parade marched to the Town Centre thorough Commercial Way led 9

by the Surrey Cadets Corp of Drums followed by the 25 Standards of all the Local Veterans Associations and 100 of their Comrades together with a number of serving armed Forces Personnel who were on leave and wanted to celebrate the occasion. It was pleasing to see the Woking Sea Cadets from T.S Dianthus, especially as in the parade there were three former cadets who the Branch have seen grow up, namely Lt Commander James Reid, Midshipman, Alex King and Ben Fraser Royal Marines, who has just returned from Afghanistan. A short service was held in front of the War Memorial led by the Branch's Honorary Chaplain the Rev. Barry Grimster. Miss Kathleen Casey ably led the Hymn singing on her keyboard and the large crowd joined in. The last Post was sounded followed by the reveille and Piper Andy Patterson played the lament during which The Mayor of Woking Cllr. Mike Smith laid a wreath on behalf of Woking Borough Council and Capt James Newling-Wood, who has recently returned from Afghanistan, laid a wreath on behalf of the Armed forces. Following the service the dedication of Woking Branch 's Standard took place by the Rev Barry Grimster the Branch's Hon. Chaplain, which following the pledge from the members of Woking Branch the New Standard was paraded through the ranks. Finally at the end of the service the New Branch Standard led the march past and the salute was taken by the Mayor of Woking Cllr Mike Smith with great response and support from the General Public right along the parade route'

12. Bounce this Along – Allegedly a great Product All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer! 1. U.S. Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellowjackets away. Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you. 2. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice. 3. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle. 3. It takes the odour out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often. 4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season. 5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen. 6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling. 10

7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce. 8. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet. 9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner. 10. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew. 11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing. 12. To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat. 13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan. 14. Eliminate odours in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket. 15. Collect cat hair, rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. 16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling. 17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. 18. Eliminate odours in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper. 19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight. 20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away. 21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh. 22. Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe love bugs off easily with the wet Bounce. 23. Put a sheet of Bounce in your suitcase when traveling, it will help keep mites or any other critters out of it. While you are at it, travel with several Bounce sheets and run them up and down your bed linen before getting into bed, it will cause all the critters already in your bed to run. Keeps a sheet in your suitcase even after you have unpacked to protect your suitcases from bugs nesting in it.

13. ď ? Brentwood Branch RNA Service of Commemoration On Sunday July 1st a service was held at the Essex Regimental Chapel in Warley (Nr. Brentwood, Essex) to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the commissioning of the Brentwood Branch of the Royal Naval Association. (The Branch commissioned in July 1982.) The service was well attended and included a very smart contingent from Brentwood T/S St. Vincent Sea Cadets, in addition to a very good turnout from our own Branch. We were also very happy to welcome Shipmates from Dagenham and West Ham Branches with their Standards and representatives from RNA Area 5 with the Area Standard. The 5 Standards paraded including our own, provided not only a smart and colourful background, but also a focal point for reflection on former Shipmates gone before and good times past. Familiar friends in the form of representatives from the Royal British Legion and the former Essex Regiment Association now the Royal Anglian 11

Regiment Association (Essex), joined us as did other friends both old and new. All this additional support was much appreciated. After the service a buffet lunch with bar was provided for all those attending in nearby Blenheim house. As shown by the little food left over, the buffet seems to have gone down well. Blenheim House was the Officers mess of the former Essex Regiment Association (see above) and also is the venue for our regular Branch meetings. Despite recent highly changeable weather we were lucky to have a bright sunny day. The small fluffy white clouds and the blue sky did seem to appear about the same time as Dagenham’s coach and also arriving from the same direction. A coincidence? who knows? We were just very relieved to note that “It didn’t rain on our parade”. With a blend of ceremonial, church service and lighter social events, and participation by the young and not so young, it was perhaps an ideal way to celebrate the Branch in its 30th Anniversary year.

14.  Arctic Convoy Memorial Dedication - 19 August 2012 - Arboretum The Arctic Convoy Memorial will be unveiled at the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA) at 1400 on 19 August. All Arctic Convoy veterans, or the families of those who have Crossed the Bar, are welcome to attend and join the parade if they are able. It has been a personal effort by the family and Area 8 under the guidance of VP Mick Coyle have paid for the memorial themselves and have asked for donations towards the site preparation and first 10 years costs. These amount to some £7500 and to date Phyllis Coyle, Mick's widow, has received about £5000. She would appreciate any contributions (payable to, Arctic Convoy Memorial Upkeep Fund and sent to Mrs Phyllis Coyle, 37 Derwent Close, Brierley Hill, West Mids., DY5 4QB). There will be coffee/tea and biscuits in the marquee at 1300 followed by a parade to the memorial and then a dedication service. Sadly the family cannot afford a full reception as all their spare funds are going into the memorial costs.

I had occasion to travel on the 15.57 train from Newcastle to London Kings Cross, last Sunday. Having entered the carriage, I found the luggage rack was full and had no choice but to stow my case in the cross passage along with other passenger’s luggage. When the train stopped at York, many people left the train and I went along to the cross-passage, as I wanted to stow my case in the luggage rack, assuming there was space. However as many people were boarding the train, I was unable to check my case until after the train began to move. I found my case to be missing and then reported the loss to the guard. He said that he would contact both York and Darlington stations to see if the case had been left on the platform. I then decided to call my wife and tell her of the loss. A few minutes after completing the call, my wife called me to tell me she had received a call from York Station, they had found my case and would place it on the next train en route to Kings Cross. I then told the guard, he called York Station and was advised on the ETA of that train. He advised me of the train’s arrival and some fifty minutes after my arrival at Kings Cross, I was reunited with my case. To conclude, I wish to thank all members of York Station Staff whose prompt action and initiative saved a ‘Drama’ from turning into a ‘Crisis.’ You may be interest to know that within the case, were medals that had been awarded to me for service in the Royal Navy, whose loss would had been a catastrophe for me. If you are able to identify any of the station staff that were involved with the return of my case, then please thank them on my behalf. I cannot think of a finer example of Customer Service!

18.  Guess Where? An Establishment! Can you name the establishment and where it is? Please forward any other pictures to the HQ that you may have for ‘Guess Where’ so that we publish them in forthcoming Circulars. Answer again in next month edition. Last Month’s answer! 21. ď ? These will make you Smile! I was in the six item express lane at the store quietly fuming. Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Let me talk to her, I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know." A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says, "I spoke to her on the phone for three hours. You want my advice?" The man said, "Yes." The Rabbi replied, "Take the poison!"

22.  Able Seaman Just Nuisance – The Only Dog Enlisted Into the Royal Navy Able Seaman Just Nuisance was born on or around 1 April 1937 in Rondebosch, a suburb of Cape Town in South Africa. His owner (Benjamin Chaney) later ran the United Services Institute in Simon’s Town. The Royal Navy at the time were in charge of the Naval Base and the sailors would frequent the USI in their off-watch time. Just Nuisance was a very friendly dog and was ‘lashed up’ to food and drink and the occasional walk. He was very canny at recognising sailor’s uniforms and appeared to ignore personnel from the other services. The dog’s fondness of following sailors around and going onboard ships in the yard earned him his AB - Just Nuisance name as many a sailor would step over him and comment that he was ‘just a nuisance’ Just Nuisance’s love of sailors progressed to following them ashore to Cape town, a 22 mile train ride away and he got well known for his canny ability to dodge the ticket collectors by being hidden by the sailors or jumping on and off at the various stations en-route. The train companies became increasingly intolerant of the free-loading dog and threatened Mr Chaney with legal action and the threat of having the animal put down if caught. It was this threat that resulted in Just Nuisance being enlisted. The many pleas from sailors to the Commander-inChief were answered on 25th August 1939 when the dog was officially enlisted in the rank of Ordinary Seaman. This meant that as an enlisting volunteer, he was entitled to free rail travel – so problem sorted! His recorded trade on his enlistment papers was ‘bone crusher’ and his initial religious denomination listed as ‘scrounger’ Despite the love and care afforded to him by his fellow sailors and the reciprocated boost to morale, Just Nuisance was not a model sailor and his naval Judy on Grasshopper charge sheet was testament to this. He was found

16

guilty of travelling on the railway without a pass (punishment; confined to the banks of Froggy Pond with all lamp posts removed), sleeping in an improper place (namely the Petty Officers accommodation) and ‘did resist ejection from the Sailor’s and Soldier’s Home’. In order to get his full entitlement of rations, Just Nuisance was advanced to the rate of Able Dog and not long after, he got married in a glare of publicity to another Great Dane called Adinda. Five off-spring resulted, two of which were auctioned by the Mayor of Cape Town to assist the war effort. Just Nuisance was discharged from the Royal Navy in 1 Jan 1944 and was suffering gradual paralysis following a motor accident. Sadly his condition deteriorated and he was put to sleep by a naval surgeon (on the advice from a veterinary surgeon) on 1 April 1944, his seventh birthday. He was buried with full military honours the following day at Klaver Camp. Whilst Just Nuisance is the only dog to be officially enlisted into the Royal Navy, many ships and shore establishments had working dogs and cats onboard. One other that gained a unique position was Judy, a pedigree pointer who was a mascot on HMS Grasshopper. In Feb 1942, the ship was sunk by the Japanese. Following a difficult attempt to escape capture, Judy and her surviving companions were caught and sent to a POW camp. She is the only animal officially listed as a POW. Her presence was a great morale booster and comfort to the prisoners, in particular her adopted keeper LAC Frank Williamson. Her story is a remarkable one and involved another sinking and another POW camp. Her exploits earned her the “Dickin Medal”, awarded in 1946. 24.  Pembroke House is the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust’s Care & Nursing Home Pembroke House is the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust’s care and nursing home in Gillingham, Kent. While the Home caters specifically for those who have served as ratings in the Royal Navy or as other ranks in the Royal Marines and their spouses, applicants from the Women’s Royal Naval Service other Services will also be considered. In addition to full time residency, the Home also provides high quality respite breaks of varying duration. The Home has consistently achieved the Care Quality Commission’s top award for setting and maintaining the highest care standards. Recently extended and improved, the Home now offers up to 56 en-suite rooms with approximately half allocated for nursing care. The Home is situated in fine landscaped grounds with panoramic views of the River Medway and beyond and is tastefully decorated on a nautical theme. Supported by a vibrant volunteer body (the Friends of Pembroke House), the Home has 17

an excellent relationship with the local community and enjoys regular access to the local attractions including Chatham Historic Dockyard. There are strong ties with the Royal Naval and Royal Marine Associations several branches of which regularly visit the Home and in turn invite the residents to their meetings and social events. Pembroke House operates on a ‘not for profit’ basis so fees are very competitive and below the market average for a Home of its quality. Care packages are tailored to each individual and are subject to regular review as needs change; Pembroke House is not a ‘one size fits all’ care and nursing home. Local Authority funded residents are most welcome providing the fees are topped up where there is a shortfall in Local Authority funding. The Trust’s policy is not to assist with funding shortfalls on the basis that its charitable funds are utilised to provide the highest standards of care and facility within the Home for all residents to enjoy at reasonable rates. The Trust only employ staff with the right combination of skills and personality to work in the Home that is equipped to the highest standards; our aim is to provide assisted living at the right level that allows residents to enjoy a full and as far as possible independent and active life in warm, friendly and comfortable surroundings. 30.  Falklands Veteran Warship - HMS Plymouth – Appeal I wish to bring to your attention the current plight of the Falklands Veteran Warship HMS Plymouth. Named after the City of Plymouth and being full of Naval history, she is the last frigate from the conflict afloat and her wardroom hosted the Argentine Surrender of Alfredo Astiz. This year it was announced that she is to be scrapped. We cannot allow this historic warship to be destroyed. The HMS Plymouth Trust has been formed under direction of Captain Richard Tyrrell of the Navy Training Corps to fund a rescue plan for the ship. A permanent new berth has already been secured and we are now trying to raise the £400,000.00 to purchase and tow the HMS Plymouth to her new home. Sadly we only have a three month window to do this as part of the 20

money needed is to bring her current owner ‘Peel Group’ out of the scrapping deal with a Turkish ship breaker. If we fail to do this in the three month time scale, the ship will be scrapped. We are appealing Worldwide to all interested parties for funding toward her rescue plan. We feel a good place to start is at the Royal Navy Association who understand the importance of our campaign. The rescue plan would see HMS Plymouth being saved from scrap and brought to her new home in the North East of England. Once ‘home’ she would be restored to her former glory by volunteers, many of which are her former crew. Once open she would become a cadet training ship and floating museum and would also become a community based venue for a conference centre, restaurant and even a wedding venue. She would be able to offer educational and recreational activities to educate and train young cadets in fields of work that can secure a bright career for them in addition to being a family day out for all to enjoy. I ask on behalf of the HMS Plymouth Trust in association with Navy Training Corps that you support our worthy cause and if possible consider making a financial donation towards saving this ship. If there are any questions you wish me to answer please write to me at the above address or alternatively you can contact me personally by email chris.swift.82@gmail.com Christopher Swift HMS Plymouth Trust C/o Navy Training Corps PO BOX 328, Malvern WR14 9GB United Kingdom

31.  Brentwood Branch RNA We regret to report the deaths of Shipmate Frederick Cyril Hawkins (AM) a.k.a.”Bill” crossed the bar in mid May. “Bill” served in the Essex Regiment in WW2. and in that hotly contested of battle of Monte Casino. Shipmate Charles Arthur Hennessy (FM) crossed the bar at the beginning of July. Charles served in the Royal Navy during WW2 as a Mechanical Engineer, more familiarly known to us as a “Stoker”. Due to their respective infirmities, both shipmates had been unable to attend the Branch for some time, they were both nevertheless valued and long serving members who will be sadly missed by all who knew them.

Over the years the event has grown in stature, to an extent that it has become one of the major events in the civic and social calendar, attracting participants from all over the South West, and from as far afield as London. It was particularly pleasing to see so many youth organisations taking part this year, including Falmouth & Penryn Sea Cadets (augmented by SCC units from all over Cornwall); Royal Marine Cadets from Truro; 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts, and Falmouth Police Cadets, together with Civic guests from all over Cornwall. Led by the Volunteer Band of HMS SEAHAWK (RNAS Culdrose), the parade marched from The Moor, via Market Street and Church Street for the service at 4.00 pm. The National Standards of the Royal Naval Medical Branch & Sick Berth Staff Association and the Merchant Navy Association, together with the RNA Area 4 Standard and that of Falmouth Branch were laid on the 22

altar, and Standards of other RNA Branches, Veterans’ Associations, the RBL and youth organisations were in attendance. The service was led by the Rev. Stephen Tudgey of KCM Church, who is also Chaplain to Falmouth RNA, and the address was given by Mr Simon Sherrard, a Trustee of the Missions to Seafarers, who gave an insight into the work of the Mission, both internationally, and more locally here in Falmouth. The Lessons were read by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Cole Edward Bolitho OBE, and Capt W. Entwisle OBE MVO, Commanding Officer, RNAS Culdrose, and RNA Branch President Cdre Tony Hogg AFC read Nelson’s Prayer. The service always includes a short Act of Remembrance, and bugler Bill Bishop sounded Last Post and Reveille. Following the service, the Parade re-formed, and marched to Events Square. The Salute was taken en route by the Lord Lieutenant and the Mayor of Falmouth, Cllr Geoffrey Evans. Following ‘Sunset’ the parade was dismissed, and participants and invited guests enjoyed a buffet reception at the National Maritime Museum, Cornwall. Sea Sunday is essentially a Missions to Seafarers’ occasion, and is celebrated nationally on the second Sunday in July each year. However, several towns, cities and churches hold their Sea Sundays on differing dates. Here in Falmouth, in the early 1980’s, the then Vicar of the Parish Church of King Charles the Martyr felt that it might be good if churches in Falmouth and the surrounding area were to hold their own Sea Sunday services on the second Sunday in July, and then join together for a combined service at KCM on the following Sunday. In 1982, he asked the then newly re-formed Branch of the Royal Naval Association to organise a parade. The Branch, which will celebrate its 30th Anniversary later this year, has been pleased to do so ever since. Hon. 35.  Battle of Britain Memorial Day. After all the bad weather recently, we had an excellent day at Capel le Ferne on Sunday, it was a little damp underfoot, but being situated on top of a chalk cliff above the Channel, the drainage is very good. The Inspecting Officer was The Chief of the Air Staff, and there were also 11 members of 'The Few' present. We had a superb parade, with 72 Veterans Standards being carried, the parade being led by the National Standards of the Royal Naval Association, The Fleet Air Arm Association, The Royal Observer Corps Association, The National Service (Royal Air Force) Association and the South East and Eastern Area Standard of the Royal Air Forces Association, Also on parade was the Silk Ensign of the Royal Air Force, paraded by the Queen's Colour Squadron, and the Banner of the Air Training Corps. Music being provided by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, all under the command of an Officer from the Queens Colour Squadron. There were 5 RNA branch Standards, 2 Submariners Assn branch Standards and a FAA Assn branch Standard also paraded. As you can imagine, a very colourful occasion. May I thank you for your assistance. 36.  Euxton (Lancashire) War Memorial Group I am writing to you on behalf of Euxton War Memorial Group (EWMG). EWMG is a registered charity that was established in Feb 2010 in order to research all fallen troops whose hometown was Euxton dating back to the Great War, and, to raise funds to erect a lasting and fitting monument to honour them within the town of Euxton . This will include troops from all services within the Military, and to date we have 24 names for the memorial including troops from the Army, Navy and RAF. The Charity was formed following the death of WO2 (MPF) David Markland in February 2010 whilst he was serving in Afghanistan doing a job he loved and serving his country. David was working in bomb disposal when he lost his life after stepping on an IED. Following this loss, and on realising that the village of Euxton did not have a War memorial, David’s family established the EWMG. Although formally established in Feb 2010 the group has been fundraising since the spring of 2010 and to date have raised £7,000 through numerous generous donations from local businesses, the British Legion, awareness days/events, including the Southport Veterans Weekend, and several on-line auctions. The target is to erect the war memorial by Remembrance Sunday, November 11th 2013. In order to do so we need to raise a further £23,000 to reach the total required of £30,000 by April 2012 Any donation you are able to make would be greatly appreciated and we shall of course acknowledge your donation via the official web page (http://euxton-war-memorial-group.org.uk/), Facebook pages and also at the opening ceremony of the memorial. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to you response in due course and please do not hesitate to make contact if you have any queries. 37.  South Glostershire Branch – Weekend Outing I decided that it was a good idea to parade our standard at the Plymouth Armed Forces day Parade and both RNA Plymouth and HMS Vivid helped us in finding a willing body to carry our standard and AB Paul May took up the mantle and did a sterling job. We along with members of South Bristol Branch (a coach load - 46) decided to make a weekend of it and so we booked up a hotel in Torquay, having found it very difficult to book anywhere in Plymouth for that weekend. The weekend was a little wet but it did not deter us from having a great time culminating in taking part in and a great Parade on Plymouth Hoe on Sunday. We arrived at Bretonside to be met and shown the route to the Hoe where the weather was in our favour and the Parade went off very well with a very enthusiastic crowd to cheer us on. All in all it was a great weekend and we thank all those who helped us in our quest and look forward to our next outing ! Bob Walker, Chairman.

38.  Silver Surfers – Good Advice! I never knew this, but it’s True! What is the difference between http and https ? Don't know ? how many of you are aware of this difference! The main difference between http:/// and https:// is It's all About keeping you secure** HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure" If you visit a Website or web page, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://. This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecured language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the Website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see The information you send to that site. This is why you Never Ever enter your credit card number in an Http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a Secure code that no one can eavesdrop on, you now understand why this is so important. If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card Information, you should automatically look to see if the web Address begins with https:// If it doesn't, You should NEVER enter sensitive Information....such as a credit card number. Please Pass it on (You may save someone a lot of grief). 39.  Quote of the Day "The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt.
