Branch Circular No 621 August 2012

1

Dear Shipmate Branch Secretary, Welcome to the August Circular, I hope we are bathed in sunshine as you receive this. I write this at the beginning of the month two days before my daughter’s wedding, so by the time you read this I shall probably be in Wormwood scrubs for debt!! (Much to the amusement of the teeny weeny membership sticker general secretary revenge and punishment club TWMSGSRAPC) There is a really important announcement in this Circular. The Chair of the Standing Orders Committee, Shipmate Jeremy Owens, is standing down after 18 years in the appointment. In accordance with National Council policy, agreed and announced at the Plymouth Conference, the announcement seeks nominations for the position of Chair of the Standing Orders Committee. The necessary personal attributes and qualifications are described. Nominations should be sent directly to me – and no stitching up your oppo the nominee should be in agreement!!! This is a vital and important role and will be one of the most important appointments in recent years. There is also an election for DNCM in Areas 2 and 11, details are contained within this edition. We also advertise for the first time our excellent 2012 Christmas cards, with a picture taken by our own Nigel in Portsmouth. Diaries too are now in, so please get those orders in. You will also be interested to hear that I have visited 10 Area, the location for our 2013 Conference. David Tollerton and his team have negotiated a most wonderful package with the Adelphi Hotel, which is 3 nights en suite, breakfast and evening meal, including the reception evening and a 5 course gala dinner all for £129 per person and a subsidised bar a £1.80 a pint or shot. They have also organised a Sods opera for the Sunday afternoon and up spirits afterwards. The Conference venue at St George’s Hall is only 5 minutes level walk away, and Liverpool Lime Street is 3 minutes walk. It is my strong advice to book with the Hotel as soon as you can. All dealings including for the reception evening and the Gala dinner are to be booked directly with the Adelphi and not through HQ. The hotel booking form is at the back of this circular. Talking about Liverpool.. a ‘Heads-Up’ for your diaries. The Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic will take place on the weekend of 26/27/28 May 2013, full details will be published in the next edition of the circular. Don’t forget to get your bids in for St Pauls, Field of Remembrance and the Cenotaph march, directly to Nigel or Andy. You will also be delighted to hear that we have agreed to present the Masefield poem to Her Majesty’s Private Secretary on 24 September. Don’t forget to get your bids in for the Diamond Jubilee certificates; just a contribution to postage for these interesting and beautiful certificates would be appreciated. Also we have signed the new Partnering Agreement with the RN onboard HMS VICTORY with the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Charles Montgomery. A lovely ceremony witnessed by our tame Warrant Officers on the National Council and Junior Rates from HMS VICTORY Ships Company (The Partnering Agreement is available on the Website if you would like to read the full version).

Yours sincerely

“Of Course I’m hanging on, have you tasted this Stuff”

Paul Quinn General Secretary

Chairman’s Chat – August 2012 I hope you have all had a reasonable holiday period, despite the very unseasonal weather we have been suffering. Flood waters have been prominent in the news again and I sincerely hope none of you have encountered problems with them. My home town of Tenbury Wells managed to avoid them this time despite having had three floods in six weeks in July 2007. The photo shows the entrance to my cellar after the second flood, which had six feet of water in it. Floating on the surface is a “Raffle Prizes” laminated card which I used for functions when I was Branch Secretary. Fortunately it was only the card, not the prizes! August, as is normally the case for the RNA in general, has been a quiet month. We had a good

AMC meeting in the first week, which was preceded by a review of the Club Rules. These are now due to go before the NC in September for approval, and a lot of thanks must go to Paul Harries, NCM 7 Area, for his input and experience of Club issues. The intended review of the main RNA Charter and Rules was unable to proceed due to the absence of two key members of the Review team. One of them, Ivan Hunter, NCM 12 Area, had heart surgery on Monday 30 July that he had been awaiting for some time. Unfortunately he has had follow up problems and is still in hospital, but he is making good progress and we all wish him well in his recovery back to full health. Also at the beginning of August I, along with other Area 8 Officers attended a meeting at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry to discuss arrangements for holding Conference 2014 there, a single venue for all Conference events as proposed by the Conference Study Group and a preferred recommendation in the National Council Conference Guidelines. We have negotiated what we think is a very good deal, very similar to that at the Adelphi in Liverpool next year, so I hope the NC will find our proposals acceptable at the next meeting on 8 September. On 30 August the GS and myself will be meeting the CEO of the National Memorial Arboretum with a view to having an RNA Memorial installed there. The NMA is just 25 miles from Coventry and so we hope to have this memorial dedicated on the Sunday of the 2014 Conference. 2014 is the Diamond Jubilee of the RNA Royal Charter, and in the September Circular we will be launching full details of the RNA memorial plans, including a competition for members to submit their ideas for design. This will be 3

a memorial for all shipmates who have crossed the bar, and I feel it is important that shipmates still with us have an opportunity to involve themselves in this project. Talking of memorials at the NMA you may recall having seen an appeal in the July circular for donations to support the Arctic Convoy Memorial Upkeep Fund. This memorial was commissioned, and funded privately, by the widow and family of S/M Mick Coyle, a convoy veteran himself and a former Area 8 VP. Mick made two trips to Russia with other Arctic Convoy veterans and these veterans were very close to his heart. Sadly he died of cancer in 2010 and it had been his dream to see an Arctic Convoy Memorial unveiled as well as a medal awarded belatedly for those who suffered great hardship on the convoys. His widow Phyllis, with the support of her family, used her and Mick’s savings to bring his dream to fruition, and on 19 August the first part happened. There is an article elsewhere in this circular about the occasion with a couple of photographs. Recent events also indicate that the much sought-after medal might also be forthcoming while some of the convoy veterans are still alive to receive it, some 67-70 years after their efforts helped win World War II. I found it a sobering thought, and perhaps a sign of the times, that in marching to the unveiling we passed a large new memorial to the Falklands War. The recognition accorded to it, justifiably, and several other conflicts since far surpasses that given to the heroes of WWII. The Arctic Convoys lasted for nearly four years, cost 3000 lives and 104 merchant and 22 Naval ships, with the crews having to survive almost incessant enemy attacks in the Arctic waters and the most arduous of weather conditions. Yet it required the determined efforts of a very special lady, Phyllis Coyle, and her family to provide a small, but beautiful, memorial to these forgotten men without whose efforts we may never have had the Falkland Islands to recover 40 years later. I hope we can produce an RNA memorial that will provide worthy recognition to the efforts of all those shipmates of Our Naval Forces who have done their bit for the Nation to whom we all swore our loyalty.

Chris Dovey

Partnering Agreement between the Royal Navy and the Royal Naval Association

The Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Sir Charles Montgomery KBE ADC and the National President of the Royal Naval Association Vice Admiral John McAnally CB LVO signed the new Partnering Agreement between the Royal Navy and the Royal Naval Association in the great cabin in HMS VICTORY on the 26 July 2012. The Agreement replaces the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2008, in which free membership of the Association is granted to all serving members of the Naval Service. The Partnering Agreement reflects a much closer relationship between the RNA and the RN over the last 2 or 3 years, in particular two recent initiatives: •

The Shipmates Campaign. That gives Service Leavers a year’s free membership and a personal invitation to a branch meeting in order to provide supportive and informed local network during the transition to a civilian life.

The Mentoring Programme. The RNA provides veteran mentors to Phase 1 new entry training at HMS RALEIGH and professional courses = Phase 2 at HMS COLLINGWOOD and HMS SULTAN

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Vice President Mrs Rita Lock MBE, National Chairman Mr Chris Dovey; National Vice Chair Mr Keith Crawford, Warrant Officers Tim Casey and Tim Bowers, and the RNA General Secretary Captain Paul Quinn (Front Cover Picture) 2.  Chair of the Standing Orders Committee After 18 years as our Chair of the Standing Orders Committee Shipmate Jeremy Owens has decided to stand down with effect from December 2012. The National Council has undertaken to make a public appeal for all senior appointed officials of the Association and this notice is to seek nominations for the position of Chair of the Standing Orders Committee. The Role of the Chair of the SOC is clearly covered in the Charter and Rules of the Association. The National Council seeks to appoint someone with the following skills and attributes: Essential • A close and detailed understanding of the Charter, Rules and By Laws of the RNA. • Strength of Character sufficient to advise the National President on controversial and difficult matters and intervene when necessary while appreciating when flexibility is appropriate. • The ability to think quickly under pressure. • Clear and unambiguous writing style. • Ability to speak clearly and confidently in public and to an audience. 7

Note: 1. Depending on the individual appointed the NC may appoint the Chair of the SOC as a Vice President of the Association which would entail attendance at National Council meetings in addition to those meetings she/he deem necessary of the SOC. 2. Applications should be made by letter responding to the requirements above and giving the name of 3 referees. At least one of which should be of professional standing, such as required to endorse a passport application. One should be a person of standing in the RNA.

3.  Election of DNCM - Nominations – Areas 2 & 11

Branch Secretaries of Area 2 and 11 are reminded that the nomination form for the election of a DNCM for your Area is attached to this Circular. Nil returns are not required. Each Branch may nominate one full or full life member from any Branch within its own Area, as a Candidate for election as the Deputy National Council Member subject to the approval of the Branch to which both persons belong. The envelope containing this completed form should be marked NOMINATIONS FOR DNCM 2 or 11 Area and must reach RNA HQ no later than 30 September 12. Only one nomination is needed for a candidate to be included in the ballot.

4.  The 2013 Annual Conference will be hosted by Area 10 and will held in Liverpool from Friday 14 to Monday 17 June 2013. The Conference will be held in one of the rooms of the fantastic St George’s Hall. It is a building in Neoclassical style which contains concert halls and law courts (no longer in use), and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest 8

neo-Grecian buildings in the world. In 2004 the hall and its surrounding area were recognized as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site. Accommodation has been arranged in the renowned Adelphi Hotel at a minimal cost of £129 per person for three nights Bed Breakfast and evening meal, the Saturday night being a Gala Dinner. Also included are three night’s of live entertainment, no extra cost for Friday’s get together or the Saturday night Gala Dinner, all are included in the price. Also subsidised beer prices will be available with all Beers and House spirits at £1.80. During the evening UP-Spirits will be piped when the Rum Tub will be bought out and you be able to get a large TOT at a greatly reduced price. The Hotel is only a five minute walk from Lime Street Station, the main station for Liverpool and is a level walk. The hotel has limited car parking space so travel by rail or coach is advisable. The Adelphi is constructed in Portland stone and is a very imposing building. It has seven stories, and its entrance front contains eleven bays. The central three bays of the ground floor comprise the entrance, which is enhanced by columns. Due to Liverpool being a major arrival and departure point for ocean liners during the early 20th century, the Adelphi served as the most popular hotel in the city for wealthy passengers before they embarked on their journey to North America The RMS Titanic was registered in Liverpool (though it never visited the port) and the current Adelphi Hotel's Sefton Suite is an exact replica of the ill fated liner's First Class Smoking Lounge. Guests at the hotel have included world leaders, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Laurel and Hardy, Judy Garland, Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger. Everything other than the Conference and Church Service will be held in the hotel. So for most of the weekend we will all be together in the one venue. Liverpool is a very friendly City and you will find that you will be made very welcome where ever you go. Step outside the hotel and you are right in the City Centre, here you will find many shops, bars and restaurants and the newly constructed Liverpool One, one of the largest shopping venues in Europe, which consists of a large number of quality shops many only seen in London, along with many restaurants and cafes. Only a short walk from the hotel you will find the River Mersey, here you will get chance to see and travel on the famous Mersey Ferries, and a chance to take a forty minute cruise at a very competitive rate tour of the River and dock complexes. A must visit is the Albert Dock Complex, a series of 19th centaury warehouses now converted into offices ,Shops and restaurants and bars and the famous Beatles Museum. The Sunday Service will be held in St Nicholas's Church known in Liverpool as the Sailors Church, the Church overlooks the River and one which stands out to mariners leaving or returning to Liverpool. The parade afterwards will take place along the famous waterfront in front of the Liver buildings ending up near the Statute of Capt Johnnie Walker, famous for the Battle of The Atlantic, who after dinning in the Adelphi Hotel with the officers of his ships suffered a heart attack (caused by overwork) whilst on his way home with his wife and died the following day in the Naval Hospital at Seaforth, Liverpool. Area 10 are working hard to make sure that the Conference in Liverpool will be one you will remember!

Queens Jubilee Day - RNA Belfast

The Belfast branch celebrated Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee day by inviting all our members and guests to enjoy a glorious day at the Club. The rum barrel was filled and free rum was enjoyed by all our members and guests. The day was crowned by the Friendship Band which played outside the club to delight of all, including many passersby who stopped to enjoy the spectacle. A hearty buffet was enjoyed by all with plenty of rum to wash it down, the day was finished in grand style with the band parading through the club with a rousing rendition of “roll out the Barrel” but to honest there were more rolling out of the club thanks to the rum ration!! 7. 

(Editor’s note. Only kidding as I know you can get us back at Conference!!)

RNA Dagenham - Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Lapel Pin

As the decision was made by Government that nobody outside of serving personnel would receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal, RNA-Dagenham thought it would be a nice keepsake for their members to commission a commemorative lapel pin. This was welcomed by HQ who ensured that the commission met with the “Brand Guidelines” and asked if the branch would be prepared to extend the offer to other branches. This they have done and it has been taken up by Chesham and Amersham, Spennymoor and Ferryhill and Orkney so far with five other branches showing an interest. 1. The minimum order, it is one pin. 2. This is officially sanctioned by the NC and HQ, and is the official Diamond Jubilee pin of the RNA. 3. This may be worn during the Diamond Jubilee year. There is no restriction on its wear by any member of the RNA, Life, Full or Associate. It may be given and worn by friends, neighbours and family. 4. Please help sell the pins, all profit to charity and Dagenham will give enough discount to benefit your own branch funds. If you would like further details or to order, please contact Mark Smith on either 07866 523975 or pro@rna-dagenham.org.uk The pins are priced at £2.00 to branches or £2.50 to individuals plus P&P. Pins are also available from Nigel at the HQ. They are very popular so some delay may occur.

12. Pusser’s Rum gets accolades from ISC 2012 with 3 awards - 30 July 2012 London -30 July 2012: Pusser’s Blue Label Rum (sole authentic rum of the Royal Navy) has been given 2 Silver Medals at this year’s International Spirits Challenge. The first awarded for Best Overall Rum, the second for Best in Class. A Bronze Medal also for Best in Class was given to its sister rum, Pusser’s 15 Year Old Rum. Pusser’s Rum (54.5% ABV) is the original rum of the Royal Navy, and was served as a daily tot to sailors for more than 300 years. The daily rum issue was the longest-standing tradition in the Royal Navy before the practice was discontinued on Admiralty orders on 31 July 1970, known as Black Tot Day. No other rum was ever served in the Royal Navy, being produced to the Admiralty’s own specification, nor was it ever available for public consumption. Now it is enjoyed by rum lovers the world over. Pusser’s Rum has expanded its horizons to introduce its unique qualities and taste to the cocktail set that enjoy their rums at the country’s leading specialist rum haunts, and Tiki style bars and clubs. Pussers is building on a heritage of more than 300 years as the only rum ever served to the sailors of the Royal Navy, beginning before the time of Lord Nelson right up to 31st July 1970. This date is known as the infamous Black Tot Day, when the Admiralty ceased the issue of the daily rum ration – a day mourned by many a sailor. The rum is unique, and was never available outside the Royal Navy. Kicking off on 31 July 2012, the Black Tot Day Anniversary, specially chosen venue’s like Revolucion de Cuba, Trader Vic’s, Mahiki, Cottons Rum Shack and Trailer Happiness are the 12

focus for Pusser’s with special back bar display kits to draw attention to Black Tot Day and promote their Pusser’s based cocktails. On sale to the public since 1979, but a favourite mainly with naval and ex-naval personnel, Pusser’s is tapping the healthy and established cocktail market. While its naval heritage is retained – it is still produced to the Admiralty’s original specification - subtle changes to the bottle labels and its use as the basis for cocktails is being emphasised. Two of the most famous are the Pusser’s Painkiller and Nelson’s Blood. Nelson’s Blood Cocktail Recipe 50ml Pusser’s Rum 75 ml Cranberry Juice 50ml Orange Juice 25ml fresh Lime Juice 3 dashes Angostura’s Bitters Garnish with lime wedge The Pusser’s Painkiller is a Caribbean delight originating on the island of Tortola, Pusser’s headquarters in the Virgin Islands. Cares are soothed away when this blend of rum, pineapple, orange and coconut is sipped. Pusser’s Painkiller 50ml Pusser’s Rum

25ml Coco Real cream of coconut puree 25ml Orange Juice 100ml Pineapple Juice A rum with real heritage for the cocktail lover The new point of sale kit includes posters, special cocktail mugs, T-shirts for bar staff, as well as Tot Fund “thank you” table matt’s. Replica scuttlebutts – the barrel from which the ship’s Purser dispensed the daily rum ration to sailors - is also in the making and will be available to Pussers Rum key accounts from September. Pusser’s UK Brand Manager, Peter Thornton, says: “It is now time for Pusser’s Rum to make more of its unique qualities, which until now have mainly been appreciated by a naval and a sailing audience. The popularity of rum as a cocktail ingredient among sophisticated winers and diners gives Pusser’s a real opportunity to sample the rum that made Britain the scourge of the seas for hundreds of years. People love tradition and Pusser’s has that in abundance. Pusser’s Rum is distributed in the UK by Cellar Trends. Enquiries to: sales@cellartrends.co.uk Website: www.cellartrends.co.uk 13

All Pooled Fare Invoices will reflect in your 3rd Quarter Branch Accounts which I will be producing at the end of October. A plea from your Financial Controller I would be very grateful if Branches informed HQ of any personnel changes ASAP as this is vitally important information which results in corrupted databases and leads to incorrect records. Finally, Finally a gentle reminder....... One sunny Sunday afternoon I was sitting pondering how to sort out the Branch accounts (no rest for the wicked) in my garden reading and occasionally glancing at my girly magazine when I came across an article entitled ‘Has your photocard driving licence expired’ and thought “gosh, I don’t know”. (If any of you are like me my licence was popped into my huge Maggie Thatcher style handbag and forgotten about) Reading on I discovered that driving licence photocards have to be replaced every 10 years and there is a fine of £1,000.00 if your licence has expired. It only costs £20.00 to renew but what’s £20.00 against £1,000.00 ! After fishing out my licence from my handbag I kicked Sophie the dog and exclaimed aloud “Oh Bother!” it’s expired. What do I do next so I read on to find out what to do next.......... There are three ways:

Online – You can apply at Directgov providing you have a new digital passport issued in the last five years By Post – Anyone can get forms from the Post Offices or print an application from the Directgov website In Person at selected Post Offices – Though if you do this, it’ll cost an extra £4.50 on top on the standard £20.00 fee Mine is now all sorted, new photocard with new expire date, Pheeeew !

14

I recommend – Don’t place it again in a huge Margaret Thatcher style handbag and forget about it and please remember It’s worth making a note of when yours expires. See you after my holiday....

15.  Queen’s Diamond Jubilee - Down Under The Port Phillip Bay branch had two reasons to make their June meeting on the 10th a special one as it was their Birthday meeting, which coincided with the Queen’s Jubilee Year celebrations in London. So we celebrated both in good fashion. We had a Street Party! Inside, since it is winter here! Over 85 members and guests attended, predominantly from the UK and Australia, but including a couple of Yanks, getting into the spirit of what was a lively and enjoyable afternoon. On entering the Club rooms the first thing one noticed was the sea of British and Aussie flags on every table and hanging from the ceiling. This was no staid, formal occasion, but rather a lively fun-filled event, with not a single “stiff upper lip” visible in the room! Hosted by exsubmariner Chairman Mike Bennett, the programme included a variety of activities designed to get everybody socializing and participating. There were moments when it seemed as if we were all transported back in time when scenes of the Coronation were played on the big screen. Everyone had a good laugh at the period commercials for cars, cereal, fashions and a variety of other products of the era, though the old Camel commercial featuring a doctor extolling the virtues of the unfiltered cigarettes was a real eyeopener. There were fashion parades for the best dressed man and woman in the style of the “50s’. A Coronation Quiz was held, showing that we may be getting on, but some people still had sharp memories. Several guests gave personal reminiscences of the Coronation. And a few members tried their voices in the karaoke session, with varying success! Toasts were given in true Navy tradition – with Navy Neaters (or sherry for the ladies). And a hearty “Bravo Zulu” for the originator and the Committee.

16.  Calling all World War Two Veterans – “Sods Opera Hands” Calling all World War Two veterans! (Concert Party Dames) I am doing a study into cross dressing as a form of entertainment for WWII troops, hoping to identify its effects– whether it was simply a morale booster, serving as a reminder of the women at home who were being fought for, or perhaps a hint that the fluidity of gender identities were changing. 15

18  RNA Wansbeck – Message from George Kirsopp (Hon Sec) Shipmate Brain Lawson B.E.M. (Chairman of Wansbeck Branch R.N.A.) suddenly passed away of a heart attack on Wednesday 25th July 2012 whilst on holiday with his wife Anne in Germany. Brian joined HMS Ganges in 1959 as a junior seaman, he then saw the light and transferred to the S & S branch. His first ship was HMS Victorious followed by time in HMS Ark Royal, Invincible, Intrepid (twice) plus various Leander’s and Type 42's. He was awarded the B.E.M. for his relief work after the earthquake in the Dominican Republic in 1986, he left the service in 1994. Since joining Wansbeck Branch he was always a very active member in both the business and social aspects of the branch, including attending the 2012 conference in Newcastle. He was always the life and sole of any gathering and had been heavily involved in the planning of Wansbeck’s Branch's 30th anniversary and this year’s Trafalgar dinner/dance in October. Note: the word "click" means click once with the left-hand mouse button. A web page has clickable links, which open related pages. A clickable link means the mouse cursor changes to a pointing hand when you move the mouse over a piece of text or a picture. Click when you see the pointing hand.

16

Click the back button at the top left-hand side of your window if you need to go back to the previous page. Keep clicking the Back Button to go further back in the sequence of pages you have opened. Always use your scroll bars especially down. Many web pages are longer than your screen so often you can't see the whole page at once. Small scroll bars sometimes appear in smaller frames within the main window. Learn how to interpret how the page is arranged. Many web pages contain masses of information which can be overwhelming. Look for the contents lists which take you to the main "sections" of the site, often down the side of the page, or arranged as tabs across the top as in our own site. Look for the layout structure: is it in columns, how many are there? Identify which areas contain primary information. Identify which areas contain additional details eg special offers, and which areas contain sponsor advertisements. Be wary of any tempting or alarming flashing advertisements that occasionally pop up trying to sell you something; if you click on one you sometimes cannot get rid of it. Do not click on anything that has the words "DOWNLOAD" unless you are absolutely certain you know what it is. Many web pages require you to type information into special slots . Click in the slot and make sure that the cursor is flashing there, otherwise typing will not appear in the slot. A small black arrow at the end of a slot indicates a drop-down list giving you alternative responses. Click on the arrow then click on your chosen alternative in the list to "load" it into the slot. Often there is a useful search function within a site, usually at the top. Type key words of your choice into the search slot and click on a nearby button that says something like "search", "go" , "find now" and so on. To enlarge the text size either click on the View Menu at the top of your screen and select Text size or Zoom or look for a percentage figure or slider at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This size will remain in force until you change it again. Use the Favourites (sometimes called Bookmarks) function to bookmark useful websites and be able to return to them directly whenever you wish. (On Internet Explorer 8 it is the gold star near the top.) Stay Positive! Practise with one or two you like and gradually try new ones. Don't be tempted to dismiss the whole Internet if a few websites seem confusing or you get lost.

20. ď ? This will make you Smile! There was a bit of confusion at the store this morning. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me." Making a mental note to complain to head office about Tesco running amok, I did just as she had instructed. When the hysterical shrieking and when the alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future !!!!!!!!!! They need to make their instructions to us Seniors a little clearer! 17

22.  Unveiling of a memorial to Arctic Convoy Veterans - National Memorial Arboretum – Chris Dovey National Chairman. On Sunday (19 August) I gave an address at the unveiling of a memorial to Arctic Convoy veterans at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. We had an appeal about this in the circular a while back. The memorial was commissioned and paid for privately by the widow and family of one of the veterans, and the appeal was towards the upkeep maintenance costs imposed by the NMA for the next 20 years. A gathering of over 300 attended the unveiling, included many Arctic Convoy veterans, both RN and MN. I was congratulated by some of the MN veterans for recognising their part in the convoys in my address, as they often feel left out on such gatherings by the Naval representatives.

The RNA National Ceremonial Officer, who acted as parade marshal, helps a disabled Arctic Convoy veteran to lay a wreath at the newly-unveiled Memorial.

24.  Management Course – Great Reading Lesson 1: A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.' After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?' 'It was Bob the next door neighbour she replies. 'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?' Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure. Lesson 2: A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand.. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.' Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way. 19

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.' Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity. Lesson 3: A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.' 'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas , driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.' Puff! She's gone. 'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.' Puff! He's gone. 'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.' Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say. Lesson. 4 An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?' The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.' So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it. Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up. Lesson. 5 A turkey was chatting with a bull. 'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.' 'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'

20

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree. Moral of the story: Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.. Lesson. 6 A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him. Morals of the story: (1) Not everyone who shxts on you is your enemy. (2) Not everyone who gets you out of the Poo is your friend. (3) And when you're in deep shxt, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

2013 HMS Fisgard Series 32 Reunion - 4/01/2013 A Reunion to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of Series 32 joining HMS Fisgard is planned for January 4 to 7, 2013, with a dinner on the Saturday evening. The chosen venue is the Queens Hotel in Southsea, which many will know is close to the war memorial on Southsea Common. In addition to those of us that joined as S32, we would like to extend a welcome to any other Fisgardians that may have spent a goodly part of their Part 1/Part 28

2 training with us, having been back-classed into our little fraternity (many long-standing friendships will have been forged during our 12-term sojourns in Fisgard, Collingwood, Caledonia and Condor). The Portsmouth area offers masses of attractions including the Spinnaker Tower/Gun wharf Quay and in the adjacent Dockyard area HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose and the Maritime Museum. HMS Sultan is closed down until Jan 7th, but some may wish to extend their stay to the Monday when a visit may be arranged to the Fisgard Museum. Rum withdrawn from accompanying women and children, who became entitled to tea and sugar in lieu. VC: CPO George Prowse, DSM, RNVR, Drake Battalion RND, France: for gallantry in attack on the Hindenburg Line. (Last one award on a blue ribbon.) One thousand Second World War veterans of the British Pacific Fleet and East Indies Fleet marched under the White Ensign for the last time in Portsmouth Naval base. This final parade, at which Cdre Stephen Graham RN, Naval Base Commander, took the salute, represented 174 ships and units. Royal Warrant required the forfeiture of the VC awarded to Mid E. St J. Daniel in 1854, he having been ‘accused of a disgraceful offence’ and ‘having evaded enquiry by deserting from Our service’ – the only naval forfeiture of the eight to date. Lieutenants and masters over eight years in seniority to rank with majors in the Army and to wear two stripes instead of one. Hence commanders wore three and captains four, while a commodore second-class was granted a broad stripe with a 31⁄ 6-in executive curl. HM The Queen approved the eligibility of all ranks of the armed forces for appointment to the Distinguished Service Order. Swiftsure launched: nuclear submarine, ninth of name and first of class. Italy surrendered after three years and three months of hostilities and most of her fleet passed into Allied control. Salerno landing. ‘Operation Avalanche’. Battle Honour: Salerno 1943. During the operations against the Germans in Sicily in 1943, it was decided to carry out an amphibious assault in the area of Salerno on the west coast of Italy as the first step towards the capture of Naples. Early on 9 September, 41 Cdo landed and surprised the town of Vietri. For four days the unit was involved in heavy fighting against elements of five crack German divisions. A force under Sir Robert Stopford drove Egyptian invaders from Syria after taking Acre, on behalf of the Turks. The Fleet Air Arm Memorial, incorporating the shape of an aircraft carrier in granite, dedicated at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire by the Chaplain of the Fleet, the Venerable John Green, in the presence of the senior naval aviator, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Benjamin Bathurst, and Rear- Admiral Simon Charlier, Rear-Admiral Fleet Air Arm. It commemorated over 6,000 naval aviators killed in the Service across a century. Four rowan trees represent the four Fleet Air Arm Victoria Crosses. RNAS Culdrose received the Freedom of Helston. HMS Seahawk, commissioned in 1947, was ‘the youngest RN ship or establishment ever to receive the honour’ Lord Gort presented, on behalf of the King, the George Cross to Sir George Borg, Chief Justice of Malta, who received it on behalf of the Maltese people. Vice-Admiral Viscount Nelson embarked in Victory at Portsmouth for the last time, having by his own reckoning been absent from her for only twenty-five days ‘from dinner to dinner’ since 18 March 1803. The ship sailed next morning. The Navy Board petitioned HM King George II with a memorial requesting the establishment of naval hospitals at Portsmouth, Plymouth and Chatham.

16. 1971 HRH The Prince of Wales joined Britannia RN College, Dartmouth, under the Graduate Entry Scheme, as an acting sub-lieutenant. 17. 1926 Commodores to wear a crown and two stars on epaulettes and all captains a crown and one star, thus ending the long distinction between those with less, and those with more, than three years’ seniority in the rank. 18. 1900 War Course for captains and commanders, later the Senior Officers’ War Course (SOWC), established at RN College, Greenwich. Capt H. Moore, Captain of the College, became the first Director. 19. 1914 Royal Marines landed at Dunkirk. 20. 1988 First Officer Jane Elizabeth Salt, WRNS (later Cdr RN) appointed the first, and now only, female First Lieutenant of the RN College, Greenwich. 21. 1954 Bahrain government asked the SNO Persian Gulf to find a mate of the same species as the miniature Socotran bull presented to Bahrain earlier in the year by sloop Wild Goose which was ‘lonely and did not fraternise’. The Admiralty ordered the surveying ship Dalrymple on passage from Zanzibar to the Gulf to call at Socotra to find a mate for the bull. This was done but a few years later the cow died which left the bull ‘morose and disgruntled’. Their Lordships, not to be defeated, sent the frigate Loch Fada to Socotra in 1958 which delivered ‘two beautiful heifers’ to Bahrain ‘where the bull was pleased to see them’. 22. 1917 RNAS Curtiss H 12 Large America flying boat, No. 8695, bombed and sank UB-32 in the English Channel near the Sunk Light Vessel, (51.45N, 02.05W). The first German submarine sunk by aircraft. 23. 1819 Lt W. Rodger’s device to hoist empty casks by an umbrella-like arrangement inside the cask instead of external slinging hooks tested: less successful than his siphoned water supply. 24. 1958 RNAS Ford, Sussex, closed for f lying. RN School of Photography to remain at Ford. 25. 1761 Dr Cuthbert of the Royal College of Surgeons appointed to analyse water at Weovil or Weevil Yard. Ships’ cisterns were lead-lined to protect the wood, which was unfortunate for those who drank the contents. 26. 1939 The first ‘radar-assisted naval skirmish’ (Howse) and first use of air warning radar at sea. Radar-equipped battleship Rodney, returning to Scapa with other Home Fleet units after retrieving the submarine Spearfish in difficulties off the Horn Reef in the North Sea, detected hostile aircraft at 80 miles closing the Fleet. 27. 1941 The Navigation School housed since 1 January 1906 in the Old Naval Academy, Portsmouth Dockyard, and seriously damaged in an air raid on 10 March 1941, completed a move to the requisitioned Southwick House over Portsdown Hill and was commissioned as HMS Dryad 28. 1969 First RM deployment to Northern Ireland, 41 Cdo RM on Spearhead duties. 29. 1805 Nelson rejoined the Fleet off Cadiz; his 47th birthday. 30. 1890 Abolition of the blue shirt, with its attached collar, which made a blue jacket synonymous with a British seaman.
