Dear Shipmates (Secretaries and our on-line readers) Welcome to our December Semaphore Circular and most importantly Christmas greeting from your HQ Staff (Paul, Nigel, Michelle, Chrissie and Andy), we hope that you have some fun branch events organised and plenty of Nurofen and Tums in the cupboard!! I hope you like the robin – I get a hard time that there aren’t enough! As usual down to the important issues of the month: • You should be getting your annual return into good shape and closing accounts off for the end of December, and getting subs and cards sorted for 2014. • The deadline for branch motions to Conference is 21 February 14, so time is nearly up. • NCM, DNSM and SOC election forms are due to be with me for 21 Feb 14. • Please ensure that your branch Delegate for conference is nominated using the form in the Circ – this Conference her or she can be an Associate with 3 years in and in good standing. • Please make your bookings for Coventry. We know that the Royal Court is full and some applications are already going to the 2 other Britannia Hotels nearby. There has been some concern about paying for transport to and from the other Coventry Hotels – this is an incorrect urban myth. 8 Area is putting on minibuses from the 2 other hotels to the Royal Court for Conference and social events, free of charge. • Areas should be holding standard bearers competitions in preparation for the National Standard Bearers competition on 17 May at HMS COLLINGWOOD; and branches supporting their standard bearer to compete. • You should be chatting about coming to an HQ Open Day in 2014. • Finally the HQ will close for the Christmas and New Year break from 1200 20 Dec 13 until 0830 6 January 14, please ensure that you have all that you require before then. Turning now to some important updates. The Rule Review Team have been working hard and have now finalised the new version of the Charter and Rules as well as Standing Orders and the various By Laws. There are only a few changes to the Charter and Rules, mostly it is a clarification and tidying up, the changes to By Laws are more extensive with many being deleted and some moved across from GSMs. A document has been prepared that will take everyone through the changes and a detailed track-change document going through line-by-line will be available on the website. The National Council will be sending every branch a copy of the proposed new Charter, Rules etc soon after their 7 December meeting inviting comment from branches and suggested amendments.

I have provided an update on what is happening with the Naval Service Memorial and a guide for branches. A huge thank you for the many donations, some very substantial, your support is vital in making this project a worthy one for our 60th Charter birthday. It is a very exciting time turning a plan on a piece of paper into a world class memorial. We have had a very nice young lady in for a few days making a record of our reference library of over 300 naval books. We have placed the library holdings document in the members section of the website – books can be read at the HQ or borrowed for 2 months, we will have to ask for a small contribution to postage costs - contact the Gen Sec if you are interested.

Finally, we hope to have a cake for the evening event after dedicating our memorial. Are there any cake experts either as members or married to members who would like to produce a high standard celebration cake for the occasion? It would be nice to use our own talents rather than go to a professional cake decorator, so volunteers please give Paul a ring. We hope everyone has a great Christmas, it can be quite a lonely time for some who may have lost a loved one, so I hope that you will consider calling round to that Shipmate who may have missed a few meetings or even the regular member who may be facing the Festive season hoping that someone will call. Thanks for all your very positive comments about the Semaphore Circular, it makes a real difference to Andy and I who put it together and we loved the very nice comments in 10 Area minutes! They, of course, have had the impressive Vanguard magazine. The RNA is prevented from having a national magazine by an agreement dating from the 1950s that mean that we have 2 free pages (at least) in Navy News every month – a very good deal I am sure you agree. So a Happy New Year to you all 2014 is our 60th Charter Birthday and the year that we dedicate the Naval Service Memorial and modernise our Charter for the next few years – what a great prospect for 2014!!! Caption competition What is the National President saying to the Duke of Edinburgh? Or Prince Harry to the Submarine Command Warrant Officer?
As ever, Paul General Secretary

Chairman’s Chat – December 2013 The end of yet another year is upon us and I decided I would do a reflection on some of the key aspects of the year from my perspective. It is difficult to believe it is 12 months since I did my last December Chairman’s Chat. I’m sure the many ageing members will agree with me that time seems to go quicker the older you are and, being educated as a physicist and mathematician, I have my own theory of relativity to explain it. At nearly 69 years of age a year represents approximately 1.5% of my life, whereas when I was 10 it was 10%. This appears to be a reasonable explanation to me why Christmas seemed like an eternity coming when I was 10, but that it comes around all too quickly nowadays. Not sure that my theory would find much scientific correlation with that of Einstein, but time features in both so for personal satisfaction I will claim a rather tenuous link to Einstein! 2013 has been another good year for the RNA with much progress being made on many fronts. Our HQ is now well-established in Semaphore Tower and our six Open Days were oversubscribed yet again. Meeting our HQ Staff, and seeing our facilities, has been welcomed by over 200 visitors on those occasions, plus many others on ad hoc visits. Early in the year we welcomed the MOD decision that organisations occupying MOD premises, and providing a clear benefit to the Services in their aims, objectives and business plans, should only be charged basic costs for facilities used. This has resulted in a huge saving in the monies we pay to HMNB Portsmouth for the maintenance and use of our HQ offices in the historic Semaphore Tower. While there are members who feel we should be “outside the wire”, the cost benefit analysis between that scenario and remaining in ST is overwhelmingly against moving out. We need many more paid-up members, and signs of a continuing growth in longer term membership, before we can realistically contemplate bearing the cost of our own HQ premises outside HMNB. However, recognising the old adage that “you must never say never”, the NC has wisely decided our HQ Property Fund should be retained, and interest received added to it in case the time should come when we might contemplate a building of our own. The Shipmates Program has now become firmly established in our long-term plans and has generated more interest from service leavers than at any other time in my 25 years as a member of the RNA. This, together with the now well-established RNA veteran mentoring of trainees at RALEIGH, COLLINGWOOD and SULTAN, has meant the RNA is no longer an unknown quantity to the majority of Navy personnel, and the support we have had from the Second Sea Lord in valedictory certificates to service leavers, as well as communications he has sent out to the Fleet, means the RNA is well-regarded and supported at the highest levels of Naval Command. It is up to us in the Branches to turn this interest into committed membership. The Lee-on-the-Solent 1 Branch going from nothing to a fully functioning, growing Branch of, currently, 54 members with little or no advertising within two years is an example of what can be achieved, admittedly by a Branch within close proximity to a major Naval port. I have had the pleasure of sharing in the 75th Anniversary of Chelmsford Branch and the 60th Anniversaries of Llanelli and Bloxwich Branches this year, which are very significant achievements. There are over half a million ex-Navy personnel dispersed around the country, so let’s see how many we can pull in, and how many more major Branch anniversaries we can enjoy in the years ahead..

The 2013 Conference was an excellent weekend and has established a format for the future. 10 Area did a fantastic job, which 8 and 2 Areas are hoping to emulate for 2014 and 2015 using the same Britannia Hotels Group. The Naval Service Memorial is generating enormous interest and the BBC are keen to film it (and its manufacture) for a program, so the innovative style of Memorial is proving to be even more attractive then we could ever have hoped for, and the National Memorial Arboretum has already decided to move an existing older memorial to allow the NSM to have pride of place within the Naval Memorials area. An agreement has been reached with a company for the manufacture and installation of the glass panels, and Graeme Mitcheson will be starting on the Sailor statue in early 2014. 15 June 2014 is going to be a special day and the RN are providing great support including several COs representing the various Arms, a contingent of Sailors and a Royal Marine Band. Logistically it is probably going to be one of the most demanding Conference weekends ever, but I am sure those who are there, whether for the whole weekend or just for the NSM unveiling on the Sunday, will find it a memorable occasion. Your support for the Charter Challenge 2014 Memorial Fund has been very good and we are seeing a steady inflow of funds, so thank you to those Branches and Members who have donated. We have lost some 6 branches during 2013 and one Club definitely closed. We have also had a drop in overall membership but the year on year decline continues to slow down which is good. The RNA is still alive and well and I have had some great fun enjoying your comradeship during the year. Sadly Gail has not been able to join me at events in the latter part of the year due to difficulties with her hip and the replacement operation she underwent in September. She is now progressing well and extends her grateful thanks to all those who have sent her their best wishes either directly or through me. She hopes to be back to her normal fitness levels in the New Year and ready to meet many of you once again. I want to thank all those who have contributed to the success of 2013. The National Council, and especially those who stood down this year, for their hard work over the preceding years; the Branch and Area officials who keep the RNA functioning at grass roots level; the wider membership for their commitment to and support for our great Association; and finally our small HQ Staff for all their hard work on your behalf. As we come to the end of the year it remains only for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas season and a fun-filled, prosperous New Year, both personally and in your Branch activities. I look forward to meeting many of you whenever I can in 2014 and thank you all for the support and friendship you have extended to me in person, by email, letter or telephone. It is a great honour to be your National Chairman and I cherish all the contact I have with you – even the gripes because it means you feel able to communicate freely with me on whatever matter, which is what I set out to achieve when I began my term of office in 2010. Have a good festive season and a great New Year.

The Naval Service Memorial - Update December 2013
This is a behind-the-scenes update on how the Naval Service Memorial is going. Over the last few weeks the main focus has been on finalising the manufacture of the memorial, with the main elements being foundations, Nat Chair Examining glass pavement, sculpture and the glass panels. We had been panels struggling a bit with finding someone to do the glass panels, but a recommendation from a lead supplier of architectural glass led the General Secretary, the National Chair and our artist, Graeme Mitcheson, to Proto Glass a couple of weeks ago. Proto Glass will obtain the panels cut to size and screen print them at their premises – then they are heated in a furnace to 650 degrees so that the printing melts into the glass and becomes part of it (stopping fading) – then a mirror piece of glass is placed on top with a sandwich filling of something that looks like grey chewing gum. This melts into a gel and brings the two pieces of glass into one laminated panel. It is then heat-soaked for 6 hours at 250 degrees to ensure that there are no inclusions (small crystals that can cause the panels to shatter). The panel is then edged, polished and finished ready for installation. The issues of the day Glass handling spider for are getting the structural engineer calculations for how moving the big panels around thick the glass must be – and getting some sample colour panels run off so that Graeme, Nat Chair and GS are happy with the tints. Meanwhile Graeme is investigating the stone to be used on the pavement; the Arboretum has said that white limestone is too soft for the high water table, so we are looking at a range of light granites, so that the shadow ship can be seen clearly. We have ordered the Kilkenny limestone for the figure, and Graeme will start carving after Christmas (about 8 weeks work). One of the huge screen printing We are now into the planning for the dedication event, parade machines and a small VIP reception afterward for our main guests. At present we plan to march standards and the RNA from the Armed Forces Memorial hill to the site of the Naval Service Memorial. We have a Royal Marine Band to keep us all in step; will have RN regulars from SULTAN and COLLINGWOOD. The Chaplain of the Fleet is working on the dedication ceremony for us. 9
So for planning purposes you should aim to be at the Arboretum no later than 1115 to give time to get from the cark park to the muster point for 1130 or so. For those attending Conference in any of the Britannia Hotels, we will be providing coaches to the Arboretum (and back!), those branches bringing their own transport are asked to make their own way to the Arboretum. We will run a service that will give time either before or after to look around the Arboretum (or both!). At present we hope to run the evening meal at the Royal Court with a tot and cake to celebrate the dedication of the memorial and 60 years of our Royal Charter. More details early next year and Questions to the General Secretary are very welcome if they assist your planning for the day. Keep the donations coming in – many thanks to those generous branches that are supporting this project.

Branches Donating to Charity – a note for future guidance
A review of branch annual returns and accounts has shown many occasions when it seems branches may have donated to charities incorrectly. The rule is simple and depends entirely what is in the mind of the person donating money at the moment they do. This might be money in a bucket or collecting tin, buying tickets for a branch raffle or having an event to raise money for a specific project. So, if you hold an event or collection and it is COMPLETELY clear for whom you are collecting during the collection, then the money can be passed to that charity (even if you are in RNA rig). However, general branch and charity funds, profits from branch events and raffles etc can only be given to charities within our charitable object laid down in the Royal Charter. In brief: • • • • • •
For serving or ex-serving members of the naval forces in need hardship or distress, and their dependents. To further the efficiency of the Naval Service, including recruiting. To provide facilities for bring members of the RNA together To perpetuate the memory of those who have served in the Naval forces. To help members find employments To provide members advice on personal matter etc etc.
Therefore the charities that are fine are those charities that specifically help serving and ex-Naval Service such as RNBT, RNRMC, Pembroke house etc. Help for Heroes is fine since they look after Marines. Sea Cadets are good to help since that can come under recruiting. Joint service charities that look after all 3 services, but do help the Navy, are fine too, such as the Legion, BLESMA, Blind Veterans SSAFA and the not Forgottens. I know that many branches have favourite charities they love to support that aren’t particularly naval. The point is to ensure that whoever is contributing knows where the money goes - a donor is entitled to assume that the money given to someone in an RNA blazer collecting with an RNA bucket will go for RNA charitable purposes. Here are some of the charities I have seen that may have been supported where a specific collection would be more appropriate – there is absolutely no call here for you to stop supporting them, just to ensure we collect within the Charity Law Rules and our Charter. Action for Kids
Age concern
Accordion Band
Air ambulances Cystic fibrosis
Boys Brigade Donn’s dream house Stroke Clubs Jubilee Sailing Trust Xx boys football club The Sailors Society (Merchant Navy only)
Abbey restoration Dreams come true
Girl Guides Guards associations Scouts RAFA/RAFBF
Headway Kidney cancer
Alzheimer’s Society Breast cancer Fishermans Mission Hospices Marie Cure
Parkinson UK
Red Cross
Sunley foundation
St John’s ambulance
I well appreciate that some of this may have been to pay for services (such as St John’s), but we have to comply with Charity Law. The great news is that Branches in 2012 gave over £175,000 to 11
charity. There will not be any follow-up with branches about past donations this is a note for your future guidance only. Branch Committees should also be aware that the RNA’s preferred charity is now the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, who are in the best position to judge where the need is greatest in the Naval sector. I hope this note is helpful – anyone not sure should give Michelle or the General Secretary a ring.

Shipmates Programme....
The RNA Shipmate Programme continues to correspond with all Service Leavers offering an ‘arm around the shoulder’ and to provide local information to assist with their transition to ‘civvie’ street. The Service Leavers are informed of their nearest branch and their details are forwarded either by email or letter to the Secretaries of those branches and the National Council Members for that area. Secretaries then play a vital part in the process to make Shipmates happen – ‘Operation Press Gang’ by making contacting with the individual and encourage them to come along and attend a branch meeting. Not all the Service leavers are young ABs leaving after a short period in the RN a great many have served their time and are busy organising their new lives so would really appreciate a call or visit from their local RNA. Even if they do not feel it is right to join at this time contact with the Service Leaver will continue to be maintained by RNA HQ at the 1, 3 & 5 year stage after they have left the RN/RM. The RNAs unique selling point is that we are the only organisation that offers this benefit to our Service Leavers, regardless of whether they progress to becoming future members; it is important for them to know that ‘there is someone out there who can assist’.
7. STOP PRESS – Coming very soon new Lapel Badges (full details in 1st Feb Circular Issue) HQ have commissioned two new lapel badges which should arrive over the Christmas period we are hoping sell them in large batches to branches at £2.50 allowing branches to sell at £3.00 and enabling 50p to go to branch funds. All profits from these badges will go towards the Naval Service Memorial Fund. The RNA Cap is the prototype while the NSM badge is an example made by Nigel using his vast array of Blue Peter modeling skills….. Contact Nigel or Andy to place your order.

The ‘Nag Nag Nag’ Joke (Apologies to those wives and partners that don’t Nag....!)
An attorney arrived home late after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution for his client. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed. As soon as he walked through the door his wife started at him. 'What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Your dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'. And on and on and on......... Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the tub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged that night. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go up stairs and give him the good news. .As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet. 'They're not hanging Wright tonight,' she said. He whirled around and screamed . . . . 'FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?’

13. A Message from the Chairman of the Finance and Administration Committee (FAC) to all Branch Secretaries and Treasurers. Shipmates, Part of the job of the FAC is to oversee all aspects of Branch Accounts. The time taken by Michelle, our very hard-working and efficient HQ Finance Controller, to prepare nearly 350 branch quarterly accounts and then chase up those branches who, it appears often deliberately, delay settling their accounts, or only pay off part of them, is quite substantial. If all goes smoothly, it can take her a full week but, with the extra chasing up, that time can easily extend to two weeks. She also prepares monthly management accounts for the GS which has enabled him to keep a much tighter control on the RNA finances, and she now does a lot of the accounts control previously carried out by our accountant, resulting in a large reduction in our accountancy fees. All of this is work, which is over and above the basic financial book-keeping undertaken by her predecessors, means Michelle has a very heavy workload. If all branches were to settle their HQ accounts promptly when received her life would be much easier. To help this I will be proposing to the next FAC Meeting on 23 Nov that instead of sending out four quarterly branch account invoices as at present we should send out three “termly” accounts, in Spring, Summer and Autumn. To achieve this, and to tie in with periods when Michelle is not so preoccupied preparing other HQ Accounts, the aim will be to send out these accounts about April/May, July/August and October/November respectively. Formal notification will be given if approved by FAC. The second point I wish to make is that some branches have HQ accounts which have been overdue for payment by more than six months, and a few by as much as a year. Our rules stipulate, in Bye Law B34(a), that Branches are responsible for seeing that HQ Branch accounts are paid within two months of receipt. Please help Michelle’s workload and be fair to the cash flow problems in HQ by ensuring Branch accounts are settled promptly. In paying monies to HQ it would also ease the accounting burden if payment could be made on a single cheque, even if it covers payments for more than one entity. Processing multiple cheques adds to the accounting burden when a single cheque to cover all Branch payments would suffice. Also, please ensure cheques are made out for the correct amount invoiced, as any over or under payment also incurs an additional accounting burden for Michelle. This is a small effort for one branch but a major effort when repeated over several branches in the HQ accounts. Finally, prompt payment of invoices also applies to Branch Subscriptions, which have now been maintained at the current level of £10 for over 6 years. The FAC will be recommending to NC in December that they remain so for another year at least. They are due for payment on 1st January each year and a period of grace to 31st March is allowed. However, more than half our annual subscriptions are paid after that date, and many not until the final quarter of the year, which again creates cash flow issues. So, Shipmates, please help us run an efficient financial ship by doing your bit to keep the funds flowing smoothly and timely. Thank you. Chris Dovey Chairman FAC

In Waters Deep – A Remembrance Poem In ocean wastes no poppies blow, No crosses stand in ordered row, There young hearts sleep beneath the wave The spirited, the good, the brave,... But stars a constant vigil keep, For them who lie beneath the deep. 'Tis true you cannot kneel in prayer On certain spot and think. He's there. But you can to the ocean go See whitecaps marching row on row; Know one for him will always ride In and out with every tide. And when your span of life is passed, He'll meet you at the Captain's Mast. And they who mourn on distant shore For sailors who'll come home no more, Can dry their tears and pray for these Who rest beneath the heaving seas For stars that shine and winds that blow And whitecaps marching row on row. And they can never lonely be For when they lived they chose the sea. William H Kydd Q.C. (Halifax Nova Scotia)

Christmas ‘Pressies’ Ideas
‘Pussers’ Rum piped onboard Harrods. Harrods Wine & Spirit department is one of the first retail outlets to stock Pusser’s 15 Year Old Rum following its availability in the UK. After an absence of almost a year when global stock of this rum was depleted due to consumer demand, limited supplies to the UK became available in July. The Pusser’s is the original rum of the Royal Navy, blended to the specification laid down by the Admiralty more than 300 years ago. The issue of the daily tot to serving sailors was the longest standing tradition in the Navy but was discontinued on 31 July 1970, known as Black Tot Day. It had never been available for public consumption, but with permission from the Admiralty Pusser’s Rum was first sold to the public in 1980. As a premium rum Pusser’s 15 Year Old is available in outlets like Harrods and specialty retailers such as Nauticalia. Pusser’s Rum is distributed in the UK by Cellar Trends. For stockists contact the UK distributor Cellar Trends at sales@cellartrends.co.uk

20 Assistance Required - Book on Cold War (and no Ray he doesn’t need any Phantom dits!!) Matt Nixson is a freelance reporter is writing a book on the Cold War. He would be thrilled if any Shipmates have anecdotes or experiences they are able to share with him. In a nutshell, it's an oral history project so he is trying to get as many ranks and roles on the record as possible. He says it’s quite a large canvas and believes very strongly that the Cold War is sometimes brushed aside because, as far as nuclear weapons went, it didn't turn hot. It would be a tragedy for future generations to misunderstand its historic importance. Because it is in the words of contributors rather than his, the plan is that every single contribution should be approved long before publication. He would like to add that he is not actively hunting for revelations or controversy; he just wants to paint a colourful, accurate picture of the time. If you can assist please contact Matt directly on 07766 347788 or mattjnixson@gmail.com

Association of Wrens The first of November 2013 marks 20 years since the Womens Royal Naval Service was subsumed into the Royal Navy. We are all very proud of what we did and of the challenging jobs the women serving in today’s Royal Navy do with such great expertise and enthusiasm. The Association of Wrens has many Branches worldwide who hold regular meetings or just get together for lunch, tea or trips out. The camaraderie we all experienced when serving is preserved, tales of happy times exchanged and with serving RN women as members we learn about the life and successes of the dedicated women who follow in the footsteps of former members of the WRNS.
The next Association National Reunion will be held on Warwick University campus from 8th-10th August 2014 and will include a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum. We support the valued work of the WRNS Benevolent Trust and are pleased to have been involved in their publication ‘70 Years of Trust’ which looks back at the charity’s history. The book contains dozens of rare photographs of former Wrens at work and play; is available by post, and will be on sale together with other naval themed goods at the National Reunion. If you are a former Wren, a woman who served, or is serving now in the Royal Navy, and wish to find out more do contact the Association HQ in Semaphore Tower, Portsmouth either by phone 02392 725141, email office@wrens.org.uk or visit the website www.wrens.org.uk

RNA Norton Fitzwarren Branch The Norton Fitzwarren Branch held their Trafalgar Dinner on Monday 21st October 2013 at the Chez Amis Restaurant, Taunton, Somerset. The principle guests were our new President - Major Chris Hill O.C.Base Commander and W.O. 1 Eric Montgomery, both from 40 Commando Royal Marines, and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.
RNA Belfast Branch Belfast Branch held its Annual commemoration of the Battle of Trafalgar at which the National Standard, Area Standard and Standards from all over Ireland took part. This is an historical event for Belfast and Area 12 to have an all Ireland and UK representation as our guests. Also attending the parade were Senior Naval Officer NI Cdr John Gray and Cdr Pater Campbell. A great day was had by all and on a cold and wet Belfast morning it was imperative that a few Rum Tots were sipped in an effort for shipmates to get warmed after the Parade!!

RNA Gravesend Branch Please see below a letter of thanks from R.N.A. Gravesend President S/M Bob Ross, Chairman S/M John Richards,Secretary S/M Ernie Manewell and Committee who wish to thank all shipmates who contributed towards the cost of flooring in the Gravesend Club. Dear Shipmates, For some years the parquet dance floor at the clubhouse in Northfleet has been degrading steadily. The cost of replacement or refurbishment has been hard to put together in the current climate, but we came to the point a few months ago where we really needed to do something as loose tiles were becoming a real hazard. We were even more concerned when the local branch of the British Legion started having meetings there and then a retired association (A.R.A.) also requested regular meetings at the club, after their old meeting place closed down. So first of all we took our problem to a delegates meeting of No2 area, hoping they may be able to kick-start a funding package to help with the costs. What happened next was beyond anything that we could have imagined. First No2. area delegates agreed a sum far and beyond what we expected. Then at the suggestion of the committee, a request was put out to other branches in the area to see if they could help – the result was quite astounding. To date four branches from no2 area have come forward with generous donations to a point where the floor refurbishment became manageable and we were able to go ahead. So, it is with a great deal of thanks to the help we have received that our refurbished floor is looking as good as new and with a little luck we can continue making our increasingly popular clubhouse a better place to be. Thank you shipmates!! (Editors Note; Strictly does Gravesend.........see picture of Michelle above!!)
Area 2 On Thursday 31st October Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Lawrence KCVO CB ADC unveiled 4 new information boards at the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was welcomed by shipmates from Area 2 and Medway Sea Cadets. Sir Tim was attending in his role as a war graves Commissioner along with the mayor of Medway Councillor Josie Iles, it was a very wet morning and Sir Tim addressed the gathering under cover before unveiling the boards that contain QR codes for further information.
23
One of the boards featured HMS Dasher a lease lend ship converted to a carrier that blew up in the Clyde in March 1943 with the loss of 381 lives. S/M Mick Cox Area 2 PRO was very interested in the loss of HMS Dasher as S/M Reg Baker (Margate) ex HMS Ajax had told him he had lost his brother Percy who was onboard on the fatal day. Whilst the brothers were both on Christmas leave together and about to return to their ships Reg said to Percy see you again next leave, Percy replied "no you won't see me again" so had he had a premonition of the impending disaster? The loss of Dasher was kept secret until after the war and survivors had to sign the Official Secrets Act so that the sinking was not disclosed.
RNA Rayleigh Branch From our RNA Rayleigh’s very own raving reporter - S/M Gary Daisley.
The Rayleigh Branch of the Royal Naval Association hosted its first ever Open Evening and Prize Giving Ceremony at the Rayleigh RBL Memorial Hall on Wednesday 23rd October 2013. The event was supported and attended by Rt Hon Mark Francois MP (Minister of State for Defence), Cllr Ian Ward (Rayleigh Town Council Chairman) and his deputy (Cllr Eddie Dray). In addition, the RNA was represented by members of the Rayleigh and neighbouring branches within Area 5 (East Anglia), including Basildon, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Southend on Sea, plus Area 5, RNA National Council Members and National President. The evening commenced with displays and presentations from members of the Rayleigh branch, which included Parades & Ceremonial activities, fund raising, naval architecture and social events, but the hands down winner for entertainment value had to go to the lads of the old guard, celebrating their life and times in the King’s Navy..! Mark Francois MP, together with Cllrs Ian Ward and Eddie Dray took time to discuss and chat with each display host, who were genuinely appreciative of their interest and depth of personal knowledge within their subjects. At 21:00 the Guest of Honour (Vice Admiral John McAnally) arrived, following his private dinner party with Branch Secretary Alan Booth and his wife Iris. The dinner had been bought and paid for by members of the Rayleigh branch in appreciation to Alan for his 25 years loyal 24
service as Hon Secretary. Adml McAnally together with branch Chairman Bob Hill hosted “surprise” presentations to Don Browne on his appointment as branch President, Dave Bishop for services to the branch as Standard Bearer and committee member, and finally a certificate of appreciation from the Royal Naval Association itself to Alan Booth for his 25 years’ service. After the ceremony Alan Booth said… “I really can't get over the reception I received upon entering the hall. That will stay with me forever”. Following the prize giving ceremony, Admiral McAnally shared a few anecdotes and an old story or two, before enjoying the company of fellow RNA branch members. RNA Rayleigh Branch (Part 2..) The first annual darts match between Rayleigh RNA and the RBL was held at the Rayleigh RBL Memorial Hall on Friday 1st November 2013. The evening ended with a resounding 8-1 victory to the Royal British Legion, (Editors Note; Bet I know who won the drinking!!) who now holds the “Rayvincible” Shield (donated by the RNA). The RNA’s only victory of the evening was by George Lowe and Gary Daisley with the final dart of the final game, preventing a complete whitewash! BZ Post-competition fun game trophies and congratulatory wine winners were as follows… 1st – Jack Harrison & George Lowe (RNA) 2nd – Norman & Audrey (RBL) 3rd – Terry Barker & Dave Bishop (RNA) 4th – Wendy & Garry (RBL) 5th – Bill Vernon & Gary Daisley (RNA) 6th – Shaun & Helen (RBL)
Well done to everyone who took part. It was a truly memorable evening, which will hopefully be repeated again next year. A special thank you must also go to the RBL's Dave Harding and his wife for arranging and organising the event and refreshments. RNA Team list… Bob Hill, Dave Bishop, Bill Vernon, Gary Daisley, George Lowe, Jack Harrison, Jean Barker, Shirley Milne, Terry barker, Jim Hammond & Alan Booth.

RNA Brentwood Branch On Sunday 3rd November many of the Brentwood branch RNA members attended a memorial service at the Royal Anglian Regiment's chapel in Brentwood. The branch standard paraded and marched in together with the standard of the Royal Anglian Regiment Association (RARA). The service was led by the Reverend J A Randall of St Barnabas church, Gillingham, Kent, which is the parish church of Pembroke House, Gillingham. The main thrust of the sermon was that a person's spirit shown by their service to others is more important than the body. After the service about eighty of the congregation, including a good contingent from the RNA attended a lunch at the Army Reserve centre, Brentwood, hosted by Chelmsford branch of the Royal Anglian Regiment Association (Essex). Brentwood branch RNA has for many years had a close relationship with the Essex Regiment Association which is now part of the RARA. Our annual Re-affirmation service for our Standard is held at the Regimental chapel. Sadly St Barnabas church is to be closed in the near future. The Brentford Branch also took part in the Remembrance Day parade. Unfortunately the RNA marching detachment consisted of just three including the branch Standard bearer. Fortunately the Sea Cadets T/S St Vincent provided two very smartly turned out cadets to escort the Standard (Able Cadets Chantelle Betts and Daniel Mellins). The remaining file of two was then supplemented by an ex-submariner, who it is hoped will be ‘press ganged’ into the branch. It was a fine though cold day and the Youth Band of the Royal British Legion, Brentwood, led the parade from the Town Hall to the War Memorial. After the laying of wreaths the band led the way to the parish church of St Thomas a Becket, where a Remembrance service was taken by the Vicar, Reverend Colin Hewitt (an ex RAF chaplain). The parade then marched back to the Town Hall past the saluting base where the salute was taken by HM Lord Lieutenant for Essex (the Lord Petre) and the Mayor of Brentwood (Councillor Madeline Henwood). At the Town Hall the Mayor made a short speech of thanks to all those attending and a presentation to Lt Col Nigel Carr who has commanded the parade for many years and is now retiring. The three hundred or so on the parade where then invited to fall out and take refreshments with the Mayor in the Town Hall.

RNA Windsor Branch Members of Windsor Branch were asked to support naval personnel selling Poppies for the Poppy Appeal, so they headed off to London (just like Dick Whittington although negative cat!) .
BZ to S/M John Bennett and the Shipmates from Windsor.
RNA Huntingdon & District Branch On Saturday 26th October 2013, shipmates, family and friends from Huntingdon & District Branch held their annual Trafalgar Night Dinner at Huntingdon’s Masonic Lodge, the Priory. Also attending were four members of St Neots & District Branch, three serving members of the Royal Navy, and even a retired Air Commodore. The evening commenced with the branch President S/M Graham Holt delighted to inform the branch that an artist’s sketch of him sitting in a Sea Fury, called ‘First Solo’ (his first solo flight was around 60 years ago). The artist, Mr Barry Limbrick who is the father of Shipmate Clare Aston (Branch Treasurers wife) presented the framed print to S/M Graham who then gave a talk on his first solo flight in this aircraft. On completion of the presentation, the Hon. Secretary, Karl Webb, read messages of goodwill from shipmates who could not attend the evening meal; as an added surprise, he also read out a letter from our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, who wished our members and guests best wishes and warm thanks for our message of loyal greetings (the Hon. Secretary had written to Her Majesty on behalf of the Branch). Shipmates had an excellent three-course dinner, which included the Loyal Toast, and the toast to the Immortal Memory; then our guest speaker, Lt Cdr Andy Duthie discussed some Health & Safety issues, but this was no ordinary lecture. With the help of CPO Kev Brettle, Andy re-enacted life onboard HMS Victory, and how the actions in Nelson’s lifetime would not be allowed today. It was, of course, an amusing interpretation of today’s politically correct society, and was extremely well done. Everyone agreed that the double act worked and certainly kept us all entertained. After our raffle, the branch presented a cheque for £403.22 to the RNRMC which Lt Cdr Duthie, accepted on their behalf. (Editors Note; RNRMC is the RNAs chosen charity)

RNA Wetherby Branch The branch Secretary S/M Fred Wake wishes shipmates to be aware that the Wetherby branch now meets at The Wetherby District Social Club, Sandbeck Way, Wetherby, LS22 7DN.
RNA Pershore Branch Pershore branch have been incredibly busy over the remembrance period featuring in 5 different Services including; Friday 8th November, the Royal British Legion, Women’s Section and Royal Naval Association Pershore High School’s Annual Service to join their pupils in their act of Remembrance which included the reading of the School’s Roll of Honour. This year saw a record number of people attend and included Civic Guests from Worcestershire County Council and Wychavon District Council as well as friends of the school and Governors. Saturday 9th November , The branch RNA travelled out of town to Rowney Green Nr Alvechurch to attend the 70thAnniversary Service and remember the Canadian Crew of Wellington Bomber X3932 who perished when their plane crashed into the village green on 9th November 1943. The 5 airmen are buried at Pershore Cemetery and last year the nephew of Alton O’Neil flew over to the UK from Ontario, Canada especially to attend this Service. As well as a memorial plaque, a Canadian Maple tree was planted in 2007 and this annual service is organised each year by Alvechurch Ex Services Association. Sunday 10th Nov dawned sunny and bright in time for the traditional Town Remembrance Sunday parade which saw the RBL & Women’s Section joined by the RNA, Cadet forces, Scouts, Guides, Brownies and St John’s Ambulance. After a Service of Remembrance in Pershore Abbey which saw the reading of the Roll of Honour reinstated after an absence of 4 years, crowds of people lined the street as the parade marched back through Town past the WW2 Memorial Clock at the Town Hall. Despite the dismal weather, the 5 local schools in the Town braved the elements and held their first Service of Remembrance at Pershore Commemorative Garden in the presence of the Veterans and Civic Guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Pershore. Over 240 children paid their respects with such solemnity that it brought a tear to the eye and each school took part in readings and laid a wreath at the Commemorative Stone in honour not only of those who have died in conflict but also to those who have served or are still serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. BZ to S/M Trudy Burge who has been instrumental in the creation and building of the Commemorative Garden (as well as keeping RNA Pershore in line!!).
28
The last of the Remembrance Services was the traditional RBL Armistice Day Service which takes place each year at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pershore Cemetery. Over 72 Commonwealth Servicemen are buried in the cemetery with 42 of them being Canadian. This year, the Canadian High Commission was represented by Lt Cmdr Jasen Webster of the Royal Canadian Navy who laid a wreath on behalf of his country. Other wreaths were laid by the Royal British Legion, Women’s Section and RNA. This year saw a record attendance of people come out in support of the Royal British Legion, all of whom enjoyed touring the newly renovated Chapel rooms afterwards.
