Dear Shipmate, Welcome to the June Circular – the second electronic copy, with now only 18 hard copies going to the few branches that remain off-line. This is now our main way of communicating with Branches and Members and it is vital that the information that it has is passed on, preferably by email so photos are in colour and links work.

I hope you are enjoying the excellent first Test against Sri Lanka and warmer evenings. The Central Office staff is in busy pre-Conference mode, getting ready for Wokefield Park. We have over 70 delegates attending and it should be a fun and lively weekend. Of course it is also Her Majesty’s 90th birthday celebration weekend, so things will finish early on Sunday to enable shipmates to get home or go up to the Royal Parks in London to join in the Patron’s Lunch fun.

We have 22 RNA Shipmates attending the Royal festivities, members and sponsors, with those nominated by their NCM for doing that bit extra, with a ballot for the few places available. I hope they all have a great day!!

As we have the lead into Conference can I just reiterate that I am delighted to take your questions about any aspect of the business at Conference, be that Accounts, the Trustee report or the motions. I would rather give a full and well-researched answer before Conference than an ‘off the top of the head’ answer from the platform. Don’t forget to buy your Conference raffle tickets, if you need more books give Nigel a ring please.

To let you know that the dates for next year’s Conference at Perth have come forward a week due to events beyond our control the new dates are Friday 9 to Sunday 11 June 2017. Booking Forms will be available at Conference, again with CONA Travel our partners.

Project Semaphore We have now a better idea about how the Project will work. More details at Conference, but in outline: •

We will be looking for a substantial number of volunteers to deliver the iPAd tablet computer to those receiving them and to take the shipmate through the much simplified set up process. Volunteers will have a day and a half training and their own iPAd to get familiar with the set-up. Registration will be on-line and the process will involve a very brief assessment of your computer skills (just a few basic questions – can you use email etc). Details will be promulgated when the link is ready.

We need to start to build our list of who could use an iPad tablet to bring them on-line.

This should be something to chat over at a Branch meeting. I encourage branch officials who are not on-line to put themselves forward. You can start that process now. Names should go to the Project Manager Sharon Brown at Sharon@royalnavalassoc.com . As a rough guide I would hope that most branches will nominate between 3 to 10 possible candidates depending on the size of branch.

The package includes 2 years broadband, but we will assume that an applicant will have a land line – we won’t be using iPads over the 3G telephone system due to the cost.

I am delighted to say that the iPads will all be Air2 – which is the latest and lightest of the machines and easiest to use.

Jutland Of course this month our thoughts are turning towards the commemorations of the Battle of Jutland 100 years ago on 31 May 2016. The National President and I are attending the National 4

event at Lyness Cemetary on Orkney – with Bob Coburn carrying the National Standard in the place of honour.

HMS Caroline opens for 31 May in Belfast and is the only surviving warship of the battle. Well worth the effort of visiting in the Titanic Quarter.

There are commemorations at the naval memorials in Chatham, Portsmouth and Plymouth – where the names of most of the 6,097 sailors and Royal Marines killed are listed. The blockbuster exhibition ‘Jutland 1916, the battle that won the War, opens on 24 May at Portsmouth. The Chapel door from HMS Warspite, loaned by the RNA, is in a very prestigious position and the exhibition is highly recommended.

Royal Navy divers intend to visit the wreck of battle-cruiser HMS Invincible, whose loss provided the most terrible and iconic image of Jutland, to place a White Ensign in memory of the 1,020 officers and men killed when she blew up. There are also plans for events in Rosyth, where the battle-cruiser force was based in 1916, and paving stones remembering the four Victoria Cross winners in the battle will be dedicated in the men’s respective home towns. I shall be attending a ceremony at Waltham Forest on 26 May to commemorate Boy Cornwell’s VC (we are both East End lads).

The battle was fought on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday May 31 and into the small hours of Thursday June 1; 1916 was the only time in the Great War that the battle fleets of the two largest navies in the world met. Two hundred and 50 men of war locked horns – 151 British, 99 German – around 80 miles west of the coast of Jutland in Denmark – which gives the battle its English-language name (Germans call it the Battle of the Skagerrak). By the time the battle was over, the Royal Navy had lost 14 ships – including three battle-cruisers which blew up in devastating fashion – the Germans 11 vessels, but only one capital ship.

The Germans claimed victory at the time, but fled the field of battle and never seriously threatened British naval superiority in the North Sea for the rest of the war. Remembrance Parade 13 November 2016 - Important Changes to Ticket Allocation Process Reflecting the current heightened security requirement and in order to maintain the continued protection afforded to those attending the Remembrance Sunday Parade in London a number of significant changes have had to be made to the process for obtaining a ticket to allow shipmates to march in the parade. This will ensure that the Metropolitan Police continue to provide security at the current level. The changes below have been approved by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, whose responsibility it is for co-ordinating and managing the national remembrance parade and their delegated representatives: TRBL; MoD; HQ London District.

There will be a maximum of 10,000 places available- the intention being to achieve a balance of representation that accurately reflects the wider Veteran community, including the Commonwealth. It will seek to include as many Veterans Associations and Military Charities as possible.

Due to the heightened security measures the Met Police will need to conduct individuals security checks on all participants. Therefore Basic Personal Information will be required in advance for each applicant and ticket holders will need to bring photo ID and a document showing proof of their address for access to the parade at Horse guards via manned Police entry points.

Finally the criteria for participation have changed and are as follows; Category 1 -

Ex-Service Personnel holding a campaign medal

Category 2 -

Civilians deployed on operations in support of the Military (includes; Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Civil Servants)

Category 3 -

Ex-Service Personnel with no campaign medal

Category 4 -

Bereaved Spouses (husband/wife/partner who died on operations)

Category 5 -

Veteran association representatives

Category 6 -

Military Charities and associated Civilian groups

National Standard Bearers’ Competition – Sat 7 May 2016 The National Standard Bearers’ Competition in conjunction with the Association of Wrens National Standard Bearers’ Competition was held on the Parade Ground in HMS COLLINGWOOD, Fareham on Saturday 7th May 2016.

8 RNA Standard Bearers Competitors and 5 AoW Competitors were inspected and had their Standard Bearer routines scrutinised by the judges in glorious sunshine in front of an enthusiastic thirtystrong crowd, who travelled from far and wide to attend. On completion, the Competitors, Judges, Scrutineers and Spectators took refuge from the heat in the Wardroom for refreshments and the presentation ceremony.

National President Shipmate John McAnally thanked the Judges; S/M Tony Avery, S/M Ann Foley and WO1 Del Rea, HMS Collingwood’s Base Warrant Officer, who very kindly gave up his Saturday, for their fairness, time and commitment.

He also thanked the Adjudicators S/M Chris Dovey and Carol Gibbons, AoW National Chairman, who ‘volunteered’ after it was discovered they both had O Level Maths!!

He went on to commend all the Standard Bearers for their dedication, bearing and immaculate turn out with a special mention once again for S/M Marie Taylor who took part in both RNA and AoW competitions and finally he thanked the National Ceremonial Officer, Mick Kieran, S/M Steve Susans, who had to withdraw from competing after failing a pre competition fitness test!, and Deputy General Secretary, Andy Christie for organising the event and taking charge of the ‘Scrutineers Gazebo erection team’. S/M John couldn’t close without mentioning the magnificent support that had travelled from far and wide in the newly named ‘Sir Bob Coburn’ Stand.

It was a superb competition which proved that in the heat of battle even S/M Bob Coburn had a chink in his armour when he had a ‘senior moment’ and nearly forgot to dip his standard at the prescribed point. This error nearly let S/M Dave Corrigan who displayed a first class set of drill however the lad from Inverness just got the nod from the Judges. (It is not true he had been seen waving Scottish Fivers around near the Judges during Stand Easy!!!!)

To which she replies ”I think you are the father of one of my kids” Now being a matelot his mind travels back to the one and only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife.....

So he asks “ Are you the stripper from the stag weekend party during which I made made passionate love to you on the snooker table while my oppos watched and you whipped my posterior with a wet celery stick??

She looks into his eyes and says calmly........ (wait for it....)

“No I am your son’s teacher!”

HMS Raleigh Open Day 27 July 2016

HMS Raleigh will be opening the gates to the public on 27 July 2016 between 1200 and 1700. There will be a range of demonstrations and displays and it will be a great opportunity for anyone who wants to take a trip down memory lane to visit the establishment. Entry on the day is free and there is no need for advance bookings.

Additionally Captain Rob Bellfield, the Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh, would like to extend an invitation to any branches who would like to visit HMS Raleigh for a passing-out-parade. RN VC Series - Captain Stephen Halden Beattie VC Royal Navy ‘Sam’ Beattie was born at Leighton, Montgomeryshire and educated at Abberley Hall School in Worcester. He joined the Royal Navy in 1925. Lt Cdr Beattie was Commanding the Destroyer HMS Campbeltown when he was awarded the Victoria Cross after seeing action during the raid on the Normandy port of St Nazaire in March 1942.

HMS Campbeltown was loaded with explosives and chosen to ram the Normandie dock gates, which were the only dry dock capable of repairing the German Battleship Tirpitz. He was 11

awarded the VC in recognition, not only of his own valour but also of that of the unnamed officers and men of a very gallant ship's company, many of whom that did not return, for great gallantry and determination in the attack. Under intense fire directed at the bridge from point blank range of about 100 yards, and in the face of the blinding glare of many searchlights, he steamed her into the lock-gates and beached and scuttled her in the correct position.

The raid was an great success despite the loss of 169 men (RN and Commandos) and 215 being taken prisoner. 228 Men made it back to England but essentially the Campbeltown exploded at noon the following day killing 360 Germans and damaging the dry dock to such an extent it was never used again during WW2.

Stephen Beattie was taken prisoner of war by the Germans and held until 1945. In 1947 Beattie received the French Légion d'honneur. He later achieved the rank of Captain and he passed away in 1975 in Mullion, Cornwall.

The raid on St Nazaire known as Operation Chariot has been described as the greatest raid of all resulting in the award of 89 decorations including; 5 VCs (2 Posthumously), 4 DSOs,4 Conspicuous Gallantry Medals,17 DSC,11 Military Crosses, 24 DSM and 15 MM. His Victoria Cross can be found on display at the Imperial War Museum, London, England.

St Luke’s Hospital – Former Haslar Hospital Gosport

St Luke’s was built as part of the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar. RNH Haslar, which was at the time of building in 1753 the largest brick building in Europe, was built on an inaccessible piece of land that could only be reached by boat. This was because that many of the patients were pressganged sailors and the Admiralty did not want them to abscond after their treatment.

St Luke’s Church was completed in 1756 and for 254 years until the hospital closure it served the spiritual needs of Haslar both for patients and staff.

The church is typical of the style of religious building erected in the royal dockyards from the mid 18th century. During the 18th and 19th Century those attending church knew their place as Physicians and their patients sat to one side of the aisle, whilst surgeons and their patients sat on the other side. Labourers sat in the balcony and the washerwomen acted as the choir, often not in tune.

Services will have been held at St Luke’s for those being treated or dying at Haslar as a result of the many wars from Trafalgar to the Falklands. During the Peninsular Wars Royal Hospital Haslar treated patients from Portugal and Spain who were allied with Britain during the Napoleonic War of 1808 to 1814 against France. This included in campaigns like Trafalgar, Corunna and Waterloo.

Military dead were buried at Haslar in the paddock to the south-west of the hospital. It is thought that over 10,000 servicemen are buried there and that this is the densest burial area in the UK. There are two items of particular note in St. Luke's Church. The church bell was taken by the British from the 84 gun Danish Ship of the Line Christian VII, captured in the second battle of Copenhagen in 1807.

Secondly, the Haslar Cross which was presented by the Haslar Heritage Group in 2011 in memory of all those who served at Royal Naval Hospital Haslar. The cross is carved from oak, part of a ships timber that was used in building Haslar in 175-62, and was taken from a ceiling in the hospital during refurbishment in 1998. St Luke’s remains a working church where services are held on the 4th Sunday in every month

There comes a time when a woman just has to trust her husband...

For example...

A wife comes home late at night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket she sees four legs instead of two.

She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can.

Leaving the covered bodies groaning, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink.

As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine.

"Hi, sweetheart," he says.

"Your parents have come to visit us, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say hello?"

Assistance Please – HMS Ludlow Ensign

Semaphore Circular has received the following appeal from Captain Malcolm Farrow Royal Navy(Rtd) He asks, if Shipmates be kind enough to pass on his appeal for assistance to anyone they think may be able to help or advise.

This unique ensign, made by the ladies of Ludlow for their ship during the war desperately needs some conservation. The parish church of Ludlow cannot afford to do it. The RNA branch in Ludlow has closed down. The church has no idea where to appeal next. I just happened to visit the church, saw the ensign and asked about it. This is a piece of our maritime history.

Might it be possible to mount some sort of rescue mission and pick up this 'man overboard' . Might a number of organisations contribute. Maybe a cheaper 'emergency' job be done. Maybe lots of things, but surely we simply cannot allow this wonderful ensign to rot away until it is dumped in the bin. There are quite a few ensigns hanging in churches of course, and most of them need far better treatment than they are getting, but most of them are standard bunting and can be replaced even if the provenance of the original is lost. This one in Ludlow is different Made by hand of locals, and flown in the ship during the war. I doubt there will ever be another HMS Ludlow.

HQ Role Member Merry Swan has asked if Shipmates could assist him in gathering information for a book. Please see his request below.

My name is Merry Swan and about 7 years ago I put together a collection of my Dad’s cartoons, poems and ditties called ‘Jack the Lad RN’.

I now wish to write a ‘love story’ about my Mum and Dad’s early married life together. They met on 8th May 1946 on the Royal Albert Hall steps, where many Jacks and Jennys were generally accumulating in celebration of VE Day plus one year.

Although I have some of my father’s letters to my Mum and a few cine film cuttings, I would love to hear your stories of joy or loss as you built your relationship with ‘your one’ – the long distance 14

romance, meeting by proxy, financial hardships, borrowing friends’ clothes, discussions about whose parents you would start young married life with or cruel landladies at digs, food rationing (if applicable), young children, transport and so on.

With the information collected I would like to include some details within my story so as to give it a deeper and meatier feel. Obviously names and places will be changed to protect the innocent!

News from around the Areas and Branches RNA Woking Branch The Woking Branch’s Annual Veterans and Forces Day Parade will be held on Saturday 25th June in Jubilee Square at 11.30 where there will be a march through the Town. Shipmates wishing to participate should muster at the Railway Club, Goldsworth, Woking at from 10.00.

Any Standard Bearers wishing to take part are requested to contact S/M Rod Fraser on 01932 349928.

RNA Huntingdon & District Branch In recognition of their contribution within the local community, shipmates from Huntingdon Branch were invited to take part in the annual St George’s day church service hosted by the Huntingdon Branch of the Royal Society of Saint George. Huntingdon’s Branch Standard was paraded alongside those from the RBL and RAFA. Readings were given by the Deputy Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Daryl Brown, and the Vice President of the Royal Society of Saint George, Colonel Derek Bristow. As a community event, the local branches of the Scouts, Girl Guides, and Sea Cadets were also invited to renew their organisation’s Promises and Vows.

Sadly, the following day, St George’s Day, came the news that shipmate Ben Dear had Crossed the Bar (see the May edition of the Semaphore Circular).

Although Ben had been diagnosed with cancer last year, he maintained his enthusiasm in supporting the Branch and had even attended last year’s Remembrance Parade in his wheelchair. Ben was a popular character; his funeral was well attended with family, friends, and ex-service personnel paying their respects. In true ‘Benny’ Dear style, the wake was a celebration of his life, held at his local, the Market Inn, everyone had a chance to look at old photos, hear plenty of stories, and of course, to raise a toast to Ben. The photographs show Association Standards being paraded in St Mary’s Church as a ‘sea’ of Scouts and Girl Guides take up their places. The second picture shows some of Ben’s shipmates celebrating his life and love of the Royal Navy.

RNA Brightlingsea Branch At the Branch meeting in May the Town Mayor and The Mayor Deputy of the Cinque Port Liberty were invited to present themselves in their robes and provide a presentation on their positions and history.

Below are some very interesting facts that were revealed during the evening that may be of interest to RNA Shipmates This year for the first time in history, The Mayor of Brightlingsea and Mr Deputy are also Man and Wife, Jayne and Tony Chapman.

Brightlingsea is the only Cinque Port north of the Thames and is a Limb of the Head Port of Sandwich. The current Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports is the Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Boyce KG, CGB. OBE. DL. He was appointed by the Queen in 2004 and has visited Brightlingsea twice in the last two years.

The Mayor Deputy or Mr Deputy as he is known in Brightlingsea is appointed on the first Monday in December of each year and carries out numerous duties in our town and Sandwich. He is answerable to The Mayor of Sandwich. The Cinque Ports go back to the time of William the Conquerer. This years Mr Deputy, Tony Chapman is an RNA shipmate.

Finally, Brightlingsea was a dockyard during both World Wars; HMS Nemo which built and serviced MTBs and other small craft.

9 Area No 9 Area made a presentation to a special Lady on Friday 6th May in the Crown Hotel Stamford. Shipmate Vera McGowan, 94 next birthday, was the welfare officer for Ketton Branch from the day the Branch was formed to earlier this year when the Branch closed, a period of 30 years. Not content with accepting the closure of the Branch and the end of her reign in welfare she continues to make contact with all former branch shipmates to offer advice and help. Vera can be found every Friday luch time in the Crown Hotel where Shipmates can call in for a chat. Vera is a former Wren and a Life Member of the Association.

RNA Spalding Branch S/M Bernard Hale (92) was presented with the Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur by the Regional French Consulate Jean-Claude La Fontaine. The ceremony followed by a reception was held in the Market House at Long Sutton on Monday 9th May 2016. The Spalding Branch are very appreciative of the French Embassy who very kindly agreed to replace the original medal which it is assumed became lost in the post. Bernard was serving on HMS Welbeck during the time of the liberation.

RNA Brixham Branch On Friday 8th April 2016 Brixham Branch held an awards ceremony at Brixham Rugby Club. The Guest of honour was Commodore Jon Welch Royal Navy presented the awards to 3 members of the branch with 25 branch members and their guests in attendance. The awards were made to: Shipmate Edgar Lawrance - Certificate of Appreciation and Shipmates Paul Fitzgerald and Joe Fleming Life Membership.

S/M Edgar Lawrance served for 26 years in the British Army but nevertheless has embraced the ideals of the Royal Naval Association and given many years of willing support to Brixham branch.

Edgar is well-known and respected in the Torbay area and has been involved with many community groups in Brixham. He has also liaised with Torbay Council on many occasions to advise on public events and act as Parade Marshal.

S/M Paul Fitzgerald said that he was proud to serve in Royal Navy and also as member of the Royal Naval Association.

After a long and successful naval career he joined the RNA and has gained considerable knowledge of the association during his 23 years service.

During that time he held most offices on the branch committee. Paul has also been extremely active in the Sea Cadet Corps and in 1994 he became the Commanding Officer of Dartmouth Sea Cadets. He said the job took over my life but was highly rewarding. Fellow branch members know Paul as an ‘RNA man through and through’ and it was most fitting that his achievements have finally been recognised.

S/M Joe Fleming has served for 10 years as the Branch Chairman of Brixham RNA. The job requires a great deal of dedication, patience, understanding and places many demands on his free time. It is not a position that is attractive to all members. Joe’s easy going nature and his 19

ability to talk to people has helped maintain good relations with other branches and organisations throughout Torbay. He is also a very caring person and is always the first to help if someone is ill or in need. Joe for the past 11 years has been a Poppy Appeal collector for the Royal British Legion. You can often see him standing in Brixham Fore Street on a wet, cold November day selling poppies and using his natural cheerful Irish charm to pull in the punters.

Finally, Brixham Branch would like it known that they feel very privileged and are grateful to be able to use the facilities of Brixham Rugby Club where it holds its meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.

RNA Rockingham & District Branch

Despite there being an appalling weather forecast for the ANZAC Day parade Rockingham and District Branch WA had a reasonable turn out led by our Chairman and the weather was very kind to us.

On Wednesday 27 April the Warnbro Special Needs Primary School held their ANZAC ceremony and our Chairman S/M Knocker White, S/M Fred Bartholomew (92 years young) and S/M Roy Sankey were in attendance much to the pleasure of all the children, one of whom is offering homemade cookies as a reward for attending. Yum yum!

RNA Tyne Branch Shipmates are requested to note that The Tyne Branch Royal Naval Association will be changing its Venue from the Companions Club Newcastle Upon Tyne to the Royal British Legion Club,3 West Jemond Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 3EX, telephone 0191 810736 The reason for the change has been made is for more convenience of our shipmates as the RBL is adjacent to the West Jesmond Metro station. 7 Area 7 Area Chairman S/M Mike Starkey has forwarded a report on the annual remembrance ceremony held at Freshwater West which commemorates the disaster which occurred near the beach during WW2.

On the 25/26th April 1943 landing craft carrying Royal Marines were in transit from carrying out beach landing trials in preparation for Operation Overload and were passing Freshwater West, in Pembrokeshire, when a violent storm occurred and the landing craft were flooded, capsized and sank. The frigate HMS Rosemary which was in attendance attempted to save those in the water however, there was a terrible loss of life and 79 Royal Marines and sailors drowned, including the whalers crew of HMS Rosemary who were attempting to pick up survivors. An annual Remembrance event takes place this about time every year near the beach of Freshwater West, to honour those who lost their lives. This year’s event took place on Saturday April 23rd.

HMS Bulwark was on training exercises in the area and on Saturday April 23rd, she and two of her landing craft, came as close to shore as possible (the tide was on the ebb), to be part in the event. Bulwarks saluting gun was fired at the relevant times, Last Post and Reveille, during the ceremony.

The turn out was very good comprising serving Royal Marines, serving Dutch marine, members from the RBL, RNA, including the President and Chairman of Area 7, RNLI, the Mayor’s of Pembroke and Pembroke Dock, Police, Coastguard, local fishermen, the general public and various Standards.

RNA Londonderry Branch S/M Robert Buchanan forwarded a report on proceedings concerning the Battle of the Atlantic Commemoration 2016.

The 71st anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic was commemorated during a three day event, Friday 6th to Sunday 8th May, in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Once again the RNA was very pleased to welcome a group of Canadians, including two BoA Veterans, Jim Robinson and Don Bowman. The rest of the group included RCN Veterans and family members.

The Londonderry Branch pay tribute to our Canadian Shipmates who have been great supporters, at great personal expense, of our efforts to ensure the sacrifice of our predecessors is not forgotten. Our visitors were hosted to a meet & greet on Thursday evening in the RBL Waterside Branch. It was an enjoyable time meeting old friends and making new ones.

We set out on a sunny Friday morning to Co Donegal to support the Ulster Canada Initiative as we took part in their HMS Laurentic (WWI) commemoration. In storm-force winds and snow, HMS Laurentic struck two mines off Lough Swilly, Donegal, Ireland, on the 25th of January 1917 and sank within an hour with the loss 21

of 354 lives. RNA Standards, including Area 12, Londonderry, Cork & County and Limavady branches were paraded behind our piper, S/m Billy Doherty MN. Services were held at Fahan Church of Ireland memorial and also Cockhill Chapel memorial. The VIP was the Canadian Ambassador to Southern Ireland, Mr Kevin Vickers. On completion of the services we travelled north to Fort Dunree where we enjoyed an excellent light lunch and took in the spectacular scenery as we overlooked Lough Swilly. Lough Swilly was safe harbour for the Royal Navy Grand Fleet during 1914 while the submarine obstructions at Scapa Flow were being perfected. Our visitors were then treated to a guided tour of the Inishowen peninsula and Malin Head before returning to Londonderry.

There was plenty of interesting things to do as the Museum Service of Derry City & Strabane District Council hosted WWII related exhibitions on Saturday & Sunday in the Guildhall and the Tower Museum. There was a wreath casting on the River Foyle from HMS Pursuer on Saturday afternoon. HMS Pursuer, commander by Lt Matt French RN, was able to hold station close to the City Hotel and Peace Bridge while the ceremony was viewed by shipmates and visitors as they gathered at the City Hotel in readiness for the Mayor’s reception.

On completion of the Wreath Casting the assembled guests made their way over to the Tower Museum where the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Thomas Kerrigan welcomed everyone to the City. The Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey was in attendance as our main VIP for BoA 2016. Other VIP’s included Cdr Peter & Lady Moyra Campbell, Lord & Lady Hay of Ballyore, Sir George & Lady Gwynneth Bain, Cdr John Gray SNONI and leaders of the Canadian group Lt Cdr Jim Reddy RCN rtd & Lt Cdr Pat Jessup RCN rtd.

After thanking Margaret Edwards of the Museum Services for arranging the reception venue and the WWII exhibitions, everyone made their way to the City Hotel in preparation for the Battle of the Atlantic Commemoration Dinner. Guests were seated and the RNA Standards accompanied by the RCNA flag were piped into the ballroom followed by three WWII Veterans. Jim Robinson and Don Bowman from Canada and Tommy McFarland from Northern Ireland.

After a truly excellent meal, Cdr Peter Campbell, President RNA Area 12 (Ireland), read out a letter received from our patron, Her Majesty the Queen, wishing us well as we commemorated the 71st anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic. Cdr Campbell then proposed the toast to HM The Queen. After a short but interesting speech on some of the finer points of the BoA, Cdr Campbell proposed the toast to the BoA and the Veterans. Presentations were make and gifts exchanged and music and dancing followed till late.

10am on a sunny Sunday morning saw a varied group mustering at the RBL Waterside in preparation to parade to All Saints Church Clooney for the annual Battle of the Atlantic Service.

The parade was lead by the Churchill Band followed by Standards of the RNA and other associations, 15 in all. RNA Londonderry was pleased to welcome Area 12 Officers and members from other branches within Area 12. A number of other veteran associations and youth groups helped make a successful parade with WWII Veteran Don Bowman taking pride of place.

Rev David McBeth, Rector of All Saints and Chaplin for RNA Londonderry, welcomed everyone to the service with a special welcome to our Canadian visitors and the VIP’s. The VIP’s included The Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey, Deputy Mayor Thomas Kerrigan & City Councillors, Cdr Peter & Lady Moyra Campbell, Lord Hay of Ballyore, Sir George & Lady Gwynneth Bain, Cdr John Gray, SNONI, Air-Vice Marshall David Niven, AONI, Lt Cdr Jim Reddy RCN ret’d, Lt Cdr Pat Jessup RCN ret’d & S/m Robert Buchanan, Chairman, RNA Area 12 (Ireland).

The service concluded after an interesting address by Rev McBeth and a wreath laying ceremony in memory of all who made the ultimate sacrifice. The salute was taken by The Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry, Dr Angela Garvey, accompanied by Cdr Peter Campbell and Air ViceMarshal David Niven. The parade then returned to RBL Waterside where everyone enjoyed a light lunch.

RNA Londonderry Branch is indebted to a number of people and organisations for helping to make BoA 2016 such a successful event. First of all, a big ‘thank you’ to our Canadian shipmates, for taking the time and effort to travel across the Atlantic to join us. Thank you also to Cdr John Gray SNONI for facilitating the wreath casting and other behind the scenes items. The Waterside Branch, Royal British Legion, have been magnificent in taking us in and providing excellent facilities for our meetings and functions. Derry City & Strabane DC and Museum Services have pulled out the stops both in organising the WWII exhibits and hosting the reception. The City Hotel and their staff have excelled themselves once again in looking after our Canadian visitors and providing an excellent Commemoration Dinner. RNA Area 12 Standard Bearer S/m Eddie Moore deserves a special mention for his devotion to duty and willingness to parade our Standard wherever requested. We are also very grateful for the support from the other branches in RNA Area12.

RNA Dublin Branch Dublin Shipmates visited Roscommon on Friday 29th April 2016 where they attended a lecture about the Naval career of Surgeon Commander James Michael McNamara Royal Navy who died of his wounds in action on board HMS Hermes on 9th April 1942.

Surg Cdr McNamara was born in Church Street, Roscommon Co.Roscommon in 1902 - he was educated in St.Comans and University College Dublin where he qualified in 1923 as a medical doctor. He joined the Royal Navy in 1926 on a short service commission as a 23

Surgeon Lieutenant and transferred to the permanent list in 1932. He was promoted to Surgeon Lt Commander in 1934 and Surgeon Commander in 1940. During his career he saw service in a number of HM Ships including: HMS Crocus 1929-30, HMS Ladybird 1930-32, HMS St.Vincent 1932-33, HMS Alecto 1933-1934, HMS Danae 1936-38.

Sadly he was serving in HMS Hermes when the ship was attacked at 0500 on the 9th April 1942 off the coast of Sri Lanka by Japanese aircraft and sank with the loss of 19 Officers and 288 ratings which included Surgeon Commander McNamara, who died of his wounds shortly after. He is listed on panel 63, Column 1 of the Plymouth Naval Memorial. There is also a memorial plaque to James Michael McNamara in the Sacred Heart Church Roscommon.

The Lecture was provided by Christopher Keane who is a cousin of Dublin Shipmate Maurice Keane and was attended by the Roscommon Mayor, Paddy Kilduff, members of the McNamara family and Dublin Branch members; President, Surgeon Lt. Dermot Stones, Vice President Liam Smith, Chairman Paul Stephenson and Shipmates John Moore, Nigel Brislane and Maurice Keane.

RNA Marlborough Branch Some members of Marlborough RNA visited West Overton churchyard to remember the anniversary of the laying of a plaque to commemorate Marine John Chivers. He served aboard HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, Survived ,returned to Wiltshire 2 years later, married and raised a family.

He lived until 1850 and is buried in West Overton churchyard near Marlborough. Descendants of John Chivers and the 1805 Club installed the plaque in 2014 at a special dedication ceremony. They even suggested that Marine Chivers was the man that shot the marksman that shot Lord Nelson, I think this has still to be proved!!

RNA Leamington Spa Branch Leamington Spa Branch are deeply saddened to announce that S/M Alan Quartermaine (HMS Cossack, 8th Destroyer Association) crossed the bar on 17th April. His funeral will take place on Thursday 26th May 2016 at Banbury Crematorium, 14:00, with a reception afterwards at Wateley Hall Banbury.

His expressed wish was to have his ashes scattered at Portsmouth which will be arranged at a later date. S/m Alan was a long standing member of the Leamington Spa Branch and was a constant ‘attender’, with his son, at our annual Trafalgar Dinners.

His wry humour will be deeply missed by all at the Branch.

CROSSED THE BAR – Celebrating a life well lived Harry Butler – Cardiff Branch Harry was born and raised in Forgandenny, Perth, Scotland in 1943. He served for 22 years with the Fleet Air Arm and attained the rank of Fleet Chief Petty Officer. The attached photo shows him receiving his Warrant from Lt/Cmdr ‘Sharkey’ Ward, a Sea Harrier Squadron Commander, in 1980.

He served in a few ships including the last fully fixed wing “Ark Royal,” but he will probably be best remembered as the Fleet Chief in charge of the Air Department workshops in Hermes during the Falklands conflict. He was awarded the MBE for his work in modifying the Harrier for Royal Naval service and received a commendation from Ferranti Electronics for similar achievements.

A ‘Dour Scot’ he had a wicked and caustic wit which will be sorely missed at the RNA gatherings.

He is survived by daughter Karen; son Nik and 3 grandchildren.

He will be very much missed by his family and Shipmates form the Cardiff Branch.

Regulating Branch & RN Police Association – 30 September/ 03 October 2016 The Regulating Branch and Royal Navy Police Association was founded in 1993 as a non profit organisation for the benefit of all Regulators whether currently serving or have served in the Royal Navy to keep in touch, renew friendships and to occasionally meet at social functions. We have an active membership of 200 on our books with a high retention rate but, like all voluntary organisations, we are always anxious to recruit more people to our membership.

Vice-Admiral Sir Benjamin Martin died, aged 65, in Natal, South Africa. Went to sea as a Boy First Class 1907. Warrant officer (gunner) in battleship Malaya at Jutland May 1916 and, in May 1941, exactly twenty-five years later, was Captain of the heavy cruiser Dorsetshire in the final attack on the Bismarck. First officer from the lower deck to become a Rear-Admiral on the Active List for eighty-seven years and the first boy from RN Hospital School, Greenwich, to reach flag rank. (General Secretary notes that there has been at least one good SD/SUY Officer) Evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk completed. Operation Dynamo.

Frigate Ashanti, Cdr David Hepworth RN, entered the Pool of London following the custom of the first of class paying an official visit to the capital. She was the first warship to come up the Thames on gas turbine engines and prudently came through Tower Bridge stern first to avoid having to turn with a single screw in the Pool on departure.

Surg Capt Rick Jolly, OBE, RN, Senior Medical Officer of 3 Cdo Bde in Operation Corporate, was given by HM The Queen ‘unrestricted permission’ to wear the insignia of the Orden de Mayo (Oficial) which he had conferred on him by the President of the Argentine Republic in Buenos Aires in March 1999. He was thus decorated by both sides for his services in the Falklands War of 1982.

Eagle, fleet carrier, launched at Armstrong’s on the Tyne. She was laid down as the Chilean battleship Almirante Cochrane.

Construction suspended in 1914 and converted on the slips.

Accommodating up to 800 guests Marco Polo has eight passenger decks, serviced by four lifts. There is a good selection of comfortable cabin accommodation with 70% of cabins having an ocean view. Cabins range from standard, superior, premium and deluxe and category options are priced generally according to position, size and the facilities available. The more spacious higher graded DL, JS & DS accommodation have the added benefit of sitting areas, large panoramic ocean views, a bath tub and a fridge. Plus added value features ranging from complimentary bathrobes to a welcome bottle of Champagne.

Dining & Entertainment

Marco Polo offers dining options at the impressive Waldorf Restaurant which has two sittings or as an alternative experience, the more informal and stylish Marco’s Restaurant. There are five lounge areas comprising the theatre style Marco Polo main show lounge with big show entertainment & cabarets, the elegant Captain’s Club, Scotts Bar - an ideal spot for the night owls - or the relaxing Palm Garden with wonderful ocean views.
