Attraction to Opposites

An Interview of Mia DiNorcia by Rhett

Mia DiNorcia draws most of her inspiration from “the cohesion of opposing ideas and concepts.” Mia values expression. As Roam’s Style Director and as a designer for Revelation, Mia has found exciting ways to play with contrast, conflict, and the complexities of fashion alongside human existence.

“This opportunity provides a great opportunity and resources for student designers. Having the chance to be a part of the final product and have others provide feedback was something I couldn’t pass up.”

Mia has taken a unique approach to this year’s theme by playing with a traditionally mundane corporate aesthetic.

“One of my pieces plays with the idea of ‘the working class’ and corporate workwear using a suitlike material and grayscale, yet the silhouette resembles a more fitted look as opposed to drowning in the ‘required office wear.’”

This piece represents Mia’s love for contrast. “The notion of the ‘attraction of opposites’ is visible everywhere. Not only is it representative of unity

in contradiction, but it can also exhibit the inner conflict occurring in an individual.”

Another one of Mia’s designs takes inspiration from the Victorian era of maximalism.

“My pieces in the third act resemble the sharp edges and angers associated with power and sovereignty. Pins and opulent textures work in this idea of what accompanies dominance, speaking to both the perks and pitfalls.”

Mia’s emphasis on the details in garments allows her to utilize aesthetics and styles to their utmost complexity. She has a firm understanding of the tone and

staples of the aesthetics she pulls from and uses that knowledge to flip them on their head in revelatory ways.

“The presence of conflict and contrast is just a glimpse into the dynamism of our surroundings, as well as individuals themselves. The complexity in the idea of Revelation disclosing the intricacies of human existence inspired me to be expressive in the creation of garments that signify contrasts present in my own mind.”
