Kick the winter blues... by registering for a program from Roanoke County Parks! Just because it’s cold OUTSIDE, that doesn’t mean you should stay INSIDE. This magazine contains hundreds of programs designed to keep you active over the next few months. Even if you don’t see a program that’s right for you, please make use of our parks any time of year. This edition of REConnection Magazine contains a few format changes. We’ve added a new set of green tabs for our “Recreation Services” in addition to the blue tabs for “Classes and Activities.” We’ve also changed the program heading “Lifestyle” to “Life Skills.” Here you’ll find classes like cooking, education and language. Social programs like luncheons have moved to the “Special Events” section. Take a look at our programs, and if you like something you see give us a call. We’re Your Recreation Connection!

New Recreation Center Under Construction
Construction is well underway on a new recreation center in Roanoke County! Upon completion in December 2009, residents of the Roanoke Valley will have access to indoor and outdoor family leisure pools, fitness equipment, gyms, a jogging/walking track, and new space for meetings, recreation programs and more! The recreation center will serve as the anchor for a new 200 acre business park, creating an unprecedented opportunity for tax revenue and economic growth. The end result will be a landmark destination for residents of Roanoke County which will both enhance the region’s quality of life, and help to attract and maintain a young and vibrant workforce for many years to come. This new center will be distinguished as the region’s only true multi-generational facility, with recreation opportunities for every age and every interest! Large multi-purpose areas will allow Roanoke County Parks to offer more community programs than ever before, and serve as a much needed supplement to the County’s current recreation facilities - Brambleton Center, Craig Center and Catawba Center.
Center Benefits • Creating a meeting place for citizens
• Attracting and keeping young professionals in the Roanoke Valley
• Enhancing Roanoke County’s position as a host of regional and national • Providing healthy leisure activities for all age groups from children to seniors sporting events • Providing much needed space for the County’s growing recreation program offerings
Walls are going up on the center site right now. (above) The outdoor aquatics area will feature a water playground like the one shown here. (right)
Water Park The centerpiece of the new recreation center will be 20,000 square foot outdoor aquatic facility unlike anything else in the Roanoke Valley! The aquatics facility will feature two water slides, a current river, a children’s spray area, concessions, shaded areas, and a zero-entry leisure pool. The water park will be a great place for area families to bring visitors during the summer months. An indoor pool with lap lanes, a water slide, spray area and a hot tub will be open year round. Admission policies are currently being developed to meet the recreation needs of all visitors.

Park & Picnic Pavilion Rentals
We have 14 parks with picnic shelters that may be reserved between April 1 and October 31 each year. Shelters are available first come-first served at no charge, unless the shelter has been specifically reserved by another group or business. Make advance reservations by calling 540-387-6078 ext. 478 to guarantee the use of a particular shelter, on a certain day, during a specific time. We recommend 30 days advance notice to reserve a shelter. Special attention is given to the preparation of reserved facilities. No refunds are provided if a reservation is cancelled, however, we will reschedule your reservation to another available time or date during our current season. “Special Use Permits” may be required for certain events. Groups over 300 may be prohibited at some parks, call for details. For more information about park amenities, permits, and picnic shelter reservations and rates, see our website at: www.RoanokeCountyParks.com.
