Park Updates
Roanoke County Parks, Recreation & Tourism
“Green Ridge Recreation Center” Named Green Ridge Recreation Center will feature over 76,000 square feet of indoor program, fitness and aquatics space!
An elevated walking track (right) will feature a wall of windows boasting a panaramic 180 degree view of the surrounding mountains.
Splash Valley at Green Ridge will be a 20,000 square foot outdoor aquatic facility unlike anything else in the Roanoke Valley! The aquatics facility will feature two water slides, a current river, a children’s spray ground, concessions, shaded areas, and a zero-entry leisure pool. The water park will be a great place for area families to bring visitors during the summer months. Visit www.RoanokeCountyParks.com for project updates.
You’ve probably seen the construction from Interstate 581, just before it intersects with I-81. The building taking shape is Roanoke County’s newly named Green Ridge Recreation Center. The County Board of Supervisors recently approved “Green Ridge” as the facility’s name, after the nearby mountain range. The Board also chose to name the outdoor aquatic facility “Splash Valley.” Green Ridge Recreation Center will open in January 2010, and will feature indoor and outdoor family leisure pools, fitness equipment, gyms, a jogging/walking track, and new space for meetings, recreation programs and more! The recreation center will serve as the anchor for a new 200 acre business park, creating an unprecedented opportunity for tax revenue and economic growth. The end result will be a landmark destination for residents of Roanoke County which will both enhance the region’s quality of life, and help to attract and maintain a young and vibrant workforce for many years to come. Green Ridge Recreation Center will be distinguished as the region’s only true multi-generational facility, with recreation opportunities for every age and every interest! Large multi-purpose areas will allow Roanoke County Parks to offer more community programs than ever before, and serve as a much needed supplement to the County’s current recreation facilities.
Field Improvements Through Roanoke County’s capital improvement incentive fund grant program, several local athletic booster clubs have made significant field improvements to Goode, Vinyard and Starkey Parks. Permanent dugout roofs were installed, providing an increased level of comfort and measure of safety for the players.
Drainage Projects Major drainage projects are underway at Darrell Shell and Starkey Parks. Areas of these parks have historically been unusable much of the year due to wet conditions. Roanoke County Parks staff have installed over 140 feet of concrete v-ditch, as well as regraded and added new sod to selected areas of the parks. Check out these improvements next time you’re in the area.

Walrond Park Trail and Tree Nursery In late spring, Roanoke County Parks staff will begin construction on a perimeter loop trail within Walrond Park. This trail will feature raised boardwalks through a wetland area, and will be handicap accessible. Also in Walrond park, staff has initiated a tree nursery project with over 300 seedlings. These trees will be transplanted to other park areas as they mature over the next several years.

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Another important aspect is the positive effect it has on circulation and stimulating blood flow to the organs. Understanding Your Child’s Potential
Children learn best by seeing, hearing, moving and touching. For each child, one of these channels--visual, auditory, or kinesthetic--is the one through which he or she learns best. By knowing how you learn and how your child learns, you can help your child be an enthusiastic and effective learner all through his life, make living together much easier. It will decrease the frustration and increase the self-confidence your child will experience. It can increase his or her academic achievement, improve attitudes toward school, and even reduce discipline problems. The workshop will provide you with the tools to understand how to identify the learning strengths for you and your child. Ages

New!
Park Partners is designed to promote partnerships between neighborhood groups, businesses, schools, churches, organizations, clubs and associations. Partnerships promote community involvement, improve park facilities and grounds, and result in greater park use and enjoyment. This program encourages citizens to volunteer their time and talents to the maintenance and improvement of the County’s parks, trails, and greenways. Your commitment to the program is a minimum of two years. Suggested maintenance may include removing litter, pulling weeds, painting, mulching, planting and general debris pick-up and removal at regular intervals throughout the year. Volunteers will be recognized with a sign placed at the park location bearing the name of the individual or group that has become a Park Partner. Contact Janet Scheid at 387-6078 ext. 264, or complete an application form downloaded from www.RoanokeCountyParks. com and return it to jscheid@roanokecountyva.gov
