Therapeutic Recreation Services of the Roanoke Valley Selecting programs that are right for you... The programs listed in this guide are designed to meet the needs and interests of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities, head injury related disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and those who are blind or have visual impairments. If you have questions about a program or the level of functioning needed, please contact any of the TR staff listed below. Course #: The course # allows us to process your registration form more quickly and accurately. Program Fee: This is the fee that is charged for participation in that specific program. Transportation Fee: This fee is charged for programs that offer transportation. The fee is $3.00 for each round trip. Mountain Getaway – Boone, NC
Monday May 7 – Wednesday May 9, 2012 Spend a relaxing three days and two nights in beautiful Boone, North Carolina. On this overnight trip, we will concentrate on relaxing in the great outdoors while enjoying the comforts of home in luxurious log cabins. When not visiting area attractions, we will enjoy our time at the cabin playing pingpong, enjoying a soak in the hot tub, roasting marshmallows over a campfire, or relaxing in one of the hammocks. We will depart from the Brambleton Center at 9 am on Monday, May 7 and arrive back in Roanoke on Wednesday, May 9, at approximately 7:30 pm. All participants must be independent in personal care. time viewing of the stars, constellations, and comets over the Peaks of Otter Nature Center. We will have hot chocolate to keep us warm as we learn and hear stories of the night sky and more. Pumpkin Festival Spend the day at Sinkland Farms in Riner, VA for their annual Pumpkin Festival. The Pumpkin Festival has something for everything, including live music, a barnyard petting zoo, an antique tractor display and much more! Included in your program fee is admission to the corn maze, lunch and a hay ride to the pumpkin field where you can choose your own pumpkin. Holiday Dinner & Lights Tour Enjoy dinner at Cracker Barrel before traveling to Bedford and Liberty Lake Park to see the Holiday Lights. Be prepared to sing holiday songs during the ride! Program fee includes dinner and transportation. Dinner is from 5:30-7:00pm, then the group will travel to Liberty Lake Park and drive through the park’s displays. Enjoy a beautiful Fall day from a different perspective, the water! Before it gets too cool, we will take this chance to enjoy a day canoeing at Camp Roanoke, lead by Charlie Beisecker. We will arrive at camp, have lunch, and then a safety lesson before hitting the water. Please dress in layers appropriate for outdoor activities. popular hikes! Not only is it a hike for all levels, but you are rewarded with views of the beautiful waterfall once you get to the top! We will travel to Pembroke, and have Subway boxed lunches before starting the four mile loop hike. The trail is mostly packed dirt with occasional stone stairs. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring a bottle of water. Transportation will be provided from pick-up points only. Ridge Center for two hours of basketball. The first hour we will work on fundamentals such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The second hour we will play 3-on-3. This coed Basketball Club will meet, September 24, October 22, and November 19 from 1pm until 3pm. Fitness Club Whether you’ve never been in a gym or are a regular, Fitness Club’s individualized assistance will give you the support needed to succeed! We will have access to the cardio and adaptive equipment, weight machines, and indoor track at the Green Ridge Recreation Center! The first week will be an orientation on how to use the equipment, and then TRS support staff will help you reach your fitness goals each week. Join us as we get up and get moving! During this fiveweek course, we will integrate journal writing, poetry, and mixed media (photos, art, collages, etc.) to create your Life Books. At the end of the class, you will gain self-awareness and tap into creativity. Create your life books from supplies provided at the Brambleton Center and learn journal writing tools for future use. ‘A Christmas Carol’ Come enjoy the beloved story ‘A Christmas Carol’ at our local Showtimers Theater. The tale begins on Christmas Eve in the 1840’s, exactly seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley. Scrooge is a greedy and stingy businessman, who has no place in his life for kindness. After being warned by Marley’s ghost to change his ways (so that he may avoid a miserable afterlife like him), Scrooge is visited by three additional ghosts; each in its turn, and each visit detailed in a separate manner, who accompany him to various scenes with the hope of achieving his transformation. Taking Center Stage Theatre for Special People (TSP) is Roanoke’s first theatre group for individuals with disabilities. Starting in August, the group will meet on Saturdays to prepare for their first production. Space for participation is extremely limited. A new twist off an old favorite TRS program! This Movie Club will be meeting at the Carmike 8 Theater in Salem. Bring your own money for a snack, but the movie ticket is included in your registration fee. Purchase a 2011 popcorn bucket for $15 and bring it back for $2.50 refills each month. Movies will be preselected and participants will be able to choose from two choices. Participants that can provide their own transportation to programs are highly encouraged to sign up for this Movie Club. Leisure Seekers Leisure Seekers provides a structured environment for skill-building, socializing with peers, and engaging in a wealth of activities. Weekly activities will include a Fall festival at the Brambleton Center, Yoga with Norma, a theater production, a Green Ridge activity day, Thunder Valley, and Halloween Dance. Wednesday Adventurers Explore fun activities, new places, delicious food, and exciting exercises with Wednesday Adventurers! In this six week program, you will go to Layman Farms for a Fall Festival, take a fall hike at Happy Hollow Gardens, and tour WDBJ 7. Other activities will include morning exercise and wellness activities, Thanksgiving crafts, games, and many more! Activity information will be distributed weekly to all registered participants, highlighting the next week’s activity, transportation, dates, and times. Expressions with Gwyn Create with Gwyn Hall; Gwyn has a degree in Art Therapy and will be facilitating and giving you the tools to express yourself in different mediums. You could be painting, sketching or sculpting- let your imagination run wild! The only pick-up point for this program is Mountain House. If you do not attend on Tuesday and are interested in this great program, if you can get to Mountain House, we will take you home. This program is 2.5 hrs for 7 weeks and includes dinner. Guidelines for Registration Registration
Registration is taken via telephone, email, postal mail to the TRS main office, or in person at the Brambleton Center. Mail-in and email registrations will be processed the morning of registration in the order in which they were received, and may be submitted prior to registration date. Registration begins:

Transportation
Participants are asked to provide their own transportation, as County provided transportation is available on a very limited basis. Space will be available until filled. It is TRS policy to only wait five (5) minutes for a participant after their scheduled pickup time. After that, the van will continue on the route. If a participant is a “no show” without prior notification three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. When meeting at pick-up points, if a participant’s transportation is more than five (5) minutes late for pick up/drop off time, three (3) times within a semester, the participant will be dropped from transportation for the remainder of that semester. If a participant is removed from transportation, they will receive a refund for those fees. Based upon registrations, activities may be moved to an alternate location to help facilitate transportation needs.
High Demand Classes & Waitlists
Sometimes programs may fill before the registration session concludes. TRS considers these next to the title. If a class fills, “High Demand” classes. “High Demand” classes are marked with a the participant will automatically be placed on a waitlist. Participants will be contacted if placed on the waitlist and a space becomes available.
Refunds & Credits
In the event that Roanoke County cancels a class, participants will automatically receive a full credit to their account. Credits will be carried on the account and can be used toward future courses and activities. If a participant would like a refund, notify TRS and a refund will be processed within three weeks if the amount is over $25. Credit amounts under $25 will remain on accounts for future use. If a participant must withdraw from a course, they must be withdrawn before the class begins. A participant will receive a refund if another TRS participant can fill your spot. Credits for trips or special events (such as theatre productions where tickets are purchased in advance) cannot be given after tickets are purchased unless your place can be filled.
Guidelines for Inclusion: For participation in general recreation classes, with assistance from TRS staff, a participant must: • Meet registration requirements of the selected class, ie. age, residency, prerequisites. • Be able to adhere to the rules of conduct. • Be able to follow simple directions and be able to communicate your basic needs. • Have the ability to tolerate and function in appropriate class sizes based on type of program. • Be able to participate in the selected activity for the majority of the scheduled time.

Payments must accompany registration and may be made by cash, check, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) or money order; made payable to: Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism. If mailing a check, call to confirm your balance before you mail in your registration. Registration is not considered complete until class fee is received.
Financial Assistance:
Rec Bucks is a program which will provide a waiver or reduction of fees to residents who have demonstrated financial need.
Accessible Formats:
TRS program information is available in accessible formats that meet individual needs. Information is available in Braille, large print, elementary formats and other formats upon request. Call 772-7529 for more information on this award winning service.

Thank you & good luck! Casey Burns started with TRS in May as an intern from Radford University, and was a great addition to programs throughout a very busy Summer semester. Casey worked Fitness Club, Expressions with Gwyn, Tennis, as well as ACE. Upon completing her internship with TRS in August, Casey will sit for her NCTRC exam to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
