What is a Harry?

Every once in a while you stumble upon the unexpected.

A few months ago Roark tripped on a Harry. What the hell is a Harry? We’re not completely sure yet, but his path reveals much. We’d heard whispers of where he’d been and what he’d accomplished in the water and with a pen, but he’s a rarity. Part feral, part sophisticate – operating between the lines, playing his own notes.

Harry ventured North with us for our Winter trip to The Arc of Aleutia. The rumors were true, he did know how to ride the tube, but more interestingly Harry’s presence was even richer out of the water. We often joke when looking at new ambassadors, “If we airdropped him in to Mongolia with nothing but a pocketknife and a bottle of Bourbon, could he find his way out without calling his parents?” The answer in this case is a resounding yes!

S A F E C A M P F O U N D AT I O N X APICDA During our visit to the Aleutian Chain, we had the privilege of getting to know members of the Unangan native tribe. This small community lives on Nikolski Island in harmony with the land in an extremely remote part of the world. They survive off the land, rely on cargo plane deliveries and when needed for doctor visits or other resources, they hitch a costly ride back to civilization. This season, Roark’s Safe Camp Foundation has partnered with the local APICDA organization to raise money for a fund that provides opportunities for Unangan youth to travel abroad for educational opportunities that can be applied upon their return home, or elsewhere in life.

The Safecamp Foundation is a non-profit organization born from Roark’s goal to leave the communities we visit better than when we found them. Our Mission is to facilitate programs that empower travelers to give back to the people they meet by improving life opportunities through health, educational enrichment and community building initiatives.

Pamir Pilgrimage

In the dead of winter we landed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Smoke from coal-heated houses eerily filled the freezing air as I, along with two friends hit the road in a 4-wheel drive UAZ (Bukhanka). It felt like driving my dad’s old 1947 GMC. Cold air blew through the floorboards as it rattled and crawled over passes up to 15,272ft. On less than ideal roads, we drove 3000 miles for 5 weeks along the Pamir Highway through Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in search of ice.

Our evenings were spent huddled in the van with temps getting down to -25F. If we were lucky, we found a floor to sleep on in locals homes. They were curious why we had arrived during these cold and dark days. We made hand gestures to explain what we were doing as they offered us endless amounts of tea, bread, and vodka. It felt like we had gone back in time, with houses made of rock and mud and remanence from the Soviet Union.
