ADVENTURE READY GOODS SPRING 21

B U R N Y O U R S W E AT PA N T S ADVENTURE READY GOODS

We’ve sat idle dreaming in the living rooms, exploring in our backyard and plotting itineraries beyond state lines. But Spring has landed - ditch your couch and give the outdoors an embrace we’ve earned! Roark is no different. The Pandemic blocked us from going back to Morocco after our scout trip, but it hasn’t stopped us from introducing new purpose-built and style conscious apparel inspired by our adventure. As promised, we’ve managed to curate a handful of stories about our friends adventures in North Africa as well as some local missions to get you fired up. We hope you enjoy the Spring Collection and are as excited as we are to safely get back out there. Open roads, open minds!

A Moroccan Memoir Recounting The Western Kingdom - by Harrison Roach Photography by Woody Gooch

If I can, the first thing I do when I arrive to a new place is look at the ocean. I assess it. I critique it. I feel it. I guess at the tides and gauge the aspect of the coast. I figure the direction of the swell and wind. It’s a kind of ritual that I’ve made for myself — it provides much needed perspective and allows me to settle. In Morocco, I was greeted with high hills that wrapped with the curve of the coastline toward Taghazout. The air was dry, the colours of the land were a mix of tan and green and the skies were a brilliant, pale blue. A strong and cold offshore whistled through the Argan and cacti before blowing the backs off a building swell. We eventually pulled over to stare at the most beautiful pointbreak that any of us had ever seen. It was a mile-long stretch of jagged cliffs lined by perfect, triple-overhead, running right-handers. We hooted and hollered and slapped each other on the backs. Perfectly groomed waves peeled for hundreds of meters, and past the surf, clouds of spray were kicked up in blustery gusts. I leapt into my wetsuit before running along the cliffs to the jump-off rock I’d noted the day before with a 7’5” Neal Purchase Jnr under my arm. Getting out the back just in time for a set, I swung and pointed the nose of my board into the stiff breeze. My first wave epitomized why I’d come to the other side of the world, and kicking out at the end, I sat giggling on my board as I watched more empty waves careening down the point… Continue reading on roark.com 8

Abe collected adventures along the way. He caught dengue fever in Nicaragua. He was held up (twice), once at gunpoint in Ecuador. He nearly fell through a crevasse to his death while summiting the 20,000-foot Huayna Potosí peak in the Bolivian Andes. When the road ended in the jungles of Panama, he put his bike on a boat and sailed around the Darien Gap to Colombia. Traversing the desolate salt flats of Bolivia, he once went 8 whole days without seeing another human. “It’s a special feeling, because these days, more so than ever, it’s really hard to get lost. It’s hard to find that feeling of traveling and not seeing someone for days. I think that’s what really excited me about this adventure was finding that alone time.. Continue reading on roark.com

Since my accident—a car pulled out in front of me and left me with a broken femur, broken pelvis, and broken wrist—I haven’t really been interested in riding on the street with cars. Off-road is my true passion anyway. I mean, I started off-roading when I was a little kid, so it’s always been my jam. R: Even through you’ve been riding off-road since you were a child, had you ever experienced anything like your eight-day ride through Morocco and the Sahara Desert?

A: Morocco was the first big trip that I wanted to go on, as a way of proving to myself that I can get back at it after my accident. A bunch of really, really awesome good friends that I admire a lot were going on the trip, and I was like, “This is what I need.” I felt to really prove to myself that I could get back out there and get back out of my comfort zone … it was symbolic for me for that reason. I’ve also always wanted to go to Morocco, because it’s just unimaginably beautiful there, and I also love the feeling of being on a motorcycle day after day, navigating terrain and seeing beautiful sites in a country I’ve never been to before. Everything about how the trip unfolded was exactly the type of adventure I like to go on. R: It’s been almost exactly a year since that trip happened. How does it still echo in your life, and how do you feel as you look back on it? A: It’s still so vivid in my mind for so many reasons. Broken twill was first developed in the 60s. Constructed with zig-zagging, irregular weave, lets the pants retain all the positive aspects of denim – durability and character - without the twisting. Our Broken Twill denim adds comfort and flexibility to a classic textile, making it the do it all, everyday jean.

Ditch your couch and burn your sweatpants. We’ve all paid our dues this past year, trading faraway travels for backyard excursions and WFH experiments. As we edge closer to our familiar freedoms, we’ve found solace in the dance that any upcoming adventure

brings - planning, packing, dreaming and the realization that any destination is obtainable, no matter how long the approach takes. We’ll catch you in the Fall, when we explore the CDT in our next “Great Escape.” Travel well.
