Beautiful Chattahoochee Hills

MAYOR TOM REED

The beautiful weather we’ve been having for the past few weeks has made me mindful of what an amazing place we live in.

Chattahoochee Hills is – by any standard – just a lovely area. From the beautiful pastures and woods to the quiet gravel roads, and from the scenic byways to the historic homes and farms where many of our neighbors live (and which we all enjoy in passing) – Chattahoochee Hills is simply special. And the best part is the people who make it home. The neighborliness, the willingness to pitch in, to work on behalf of the community and our friends and neighbors— and all of the work that they’ve done to protect this place— keeps it special. It’s part of what makes our little town so different, and what makes me so hopeful for its future. I often talk about our volunteer energy—quiet, unselfish, never looking for accolades—and all the good work accomplished as a result. From volunteers at Brickworks helping feed folks in the community, to people serving on committees helping with Zoning and other important matters. From church groups and others who worked tirelessly in Newnan after the tornadoes, to volunteers who build and keep the trails in the parks in perfect shape, or those who keep our roadsides clean, and so, so much

more; this community is filled with selfless folks. Even our paid crew at the City goes above and beyond the call of duty every single day. I’ve spent a lot of time now working in cities around us, and I would put our team up against any of them for effort, thoughtfulness, productivity, and most important, caring. The work they’re doing is so evident, and it shows in the condition of our town. Our parks are the best, cleanest, and most loved in the area. Our roadsides are the cleanest in any city nearby. You can immediately see it in the eyes of the visitors that come here: they realize they have stepped into a kinder, cleaner, happier, and more beautiful—a better—sort of place. There’s no real point to most of my message this month, except for the importance of remembering how lucky we really are. In between the work and cares of the day, maybe take a little bit of time to be still—to enjoy the view, or to sit with a neighbor, and to wonder at what we’ve been given. And perhaps give a thought to what else you can do as a fellow steward of that gift. As well, we have lost several icons of our community in the past days, Betty Ann Hargis and Judy Hayes among them, folks who loved this community and cared about it deeply. If you have a moment and haven’t already, send some love their families’ way. Be well and be safe. Mayor Tom Reed

I just watched a short and troubling video message from City of South Fulton Mayor Bill Edwards, who voiced a strong concern about the proliferation of warehouses in neighboring cities, and the associated effects of truck traffic, pollution, and lack of concern for residents’ property values and overall wellbeing. Mayor Edwards’ video, below, shows a bird's eye view of a warehouse built in Union City, backing up directly to a residential community—and right across the street from his own City. He calls for south Fulton County mayors to work together to stop the intrusion of warehouse facilities into residential areas, and to come up with a plan to find more suitable areas for warehouses so they do not affect the quality of life where people have their homes. I have worked to protect our quality of life here in Chattahoochee Hills by helping to fashion our rules and restrictions, and also by collaborating with the neighboring cities to ensure that one city’s actions do not negatively impact the quality of life in the neighboring cities. All of this is to say that I am thankful for leaders who have an extended vision beyond their borders, and I urge you to watch Bill Edwards’ important message. A Patchwork of Animals Thank Their Lucky Star BreeAnne Clowdus & Courtney Howe fled the city for greener pastures when they found the perfect place to raise their three “rock star” kids and a few animals on a 15-acre farm in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia. They started out with three animals in 2016, but as they shared their adventures on social media, friends began contributing animals in need of a good home. For their barn quilts, a custom pattern was created that features four patchwork animals, each with a lucky star. This "Barnyard Quartet" represents the 72 animals lovingly

BreeAnne Clowdus, Courtney Howe, daughter Vivianne, and twins Dashel and Shepherd care for 72 animals on The Good Place Farm.

Discovering the Good Place, in Chattahoochee Hills By BreeAnne Clowdus Like so many new families to the area, Courtney and I first became aware of Chattahoochee Hills after visiting Serenbe. But our journey didn’t stop there. We’d often drive around the surrounding roads and backroads dreaming of the day when we could leave our suburban life of traffic, frenzied schedules, and perfectly mowed patches of weed-free grass behind. One day we took a right onto Jones Ferry Road and found ourselves passing by the very land we now own. I remarked to Courtney, “I think if I could pick anywhere to live in this area, it would be on this road. It’s just magical.” Fast forward almost a decade later when, after two solid years of searching, we were just about to put an offer in on a property that was good enough but wasn’t perfect. We were just too tired to keep looking, and the kids were getting older, and we really wanted them to have as close to a “Little House on the Prairie” childhood as we could manage. So good enough would have to do. But then a link comes through my phone and a text from Courtney: “This place looks good. Go see it real fast this morning just to make sure before we put in the other offer.” I had no 4

clue where the address was exactly, but as I got closer and closer and my wheels landed on that familiar gravel, I realized I was pulling onto the very road I had dreamed of living on a decade earlier! Now, I’m thinking, “Please let the property be perfect,” and it was! It was neither too big nor too small. It was not in ruins nor was it renovated: we could put our own mark on it. It had a lake which I absolutely had to have for fishing, and there was a beautiful old barn, which we would need for future animal additions (of which there would be many). It was the Goldilocks property, so we put in an offer within 15 minutes--and soon after it was ours! It took us about 18 months of work along with our amazing carpenter, Robert Whitaker, to clean up and renovate the property, and then we were off to the races! We turned our garage into a rehearsal space for the kids’ band; we added pasture after pasture to accommodate the many animals that would seek refuge on our 15 acres; and we caught a hefty amount of fish in our little lake. The kids made music, made art, did schoolwork on hay bales, learned to drive a tractor, cared for animals, learned to grow and preserve their

own food, and soaked up as much fresh air as their lungs would hold. Once we started to share our farm on social media, word spread of this magical place where life is good and the grass is plentiful. Then came the donations of animals: misfits, refugees, side-of-the-road finds. They all made their way to our farm, and with each new addition, the “Good” multiplied. Turns out, the more we have to love and care for, the more loving and caring we become. Today, humans are not the only noisemakers on this little plot of land. The sound of 72 animals fills the air each day. Every time I have to go to town (which is a necessity from time to time), I am always so excited to hit my gravel road again. The sound of the rocks under my tires, the sound of my kids playing music in our garage, and the never-ending sounds of the many creatures who now call our farm home are truly the music that goes straight to your heart--it’s the soundtrack to life at The Good Place. Ours isn’t exactly the “Little House on the Prairie,” but I think Laura Ingalls Wilder would approve. We are so very lucky to live here. We named our farm, “The Good Place,” because short of heaven, this is as close as you’re gonna get.

The Serenbe Institute For Art, Culture & the Environment Financial Transparency From the Serenbe Institute Executive Director, Jennifer Bauer-Lyons As a nonprofit organization, financial transparency is a key component of the work we do. Being transparent allows us to have the most impact in the South Fulton region. We aim to connect communities through our programs and Divisions, and that is simply not possible without the funds to do so. We can’t deliver services without donors putting their faith and trust into our financial handlings. For us as a 501(c)3, receiving contributions from individuals, funders & grants, prioritizes this component. As an organization that serves the public, we have to be clear on how these contributions are allocated. For instance, last year, funds were allocated to continue services through the COVID-19 pandemic. We provided over 1300 classes and public engagements, serving over 7700 community residents and employing over 180 artists. In addition, 419 days were spent in residency over the course of 2020. Last year also provided us time to make some much needed improvements to our facilities at the Art Farm. We removed broken, unusable and unrecyclable junk from the premises, put a fresh new coat of blue paint on the house that is our primary office space, installed interior flooring, painted the interior of the house, installed new sustainable windows, removed dead trees, and cleaned the landscaping up. As we work to make the Art Farm a destination for the community to come and engage in Art, Culture 6

& Environment, these updates were both necessary and inevitable. Something unique to our organization is that we have a longstanding partnership with Serenbe HOA in which we receive a transfer fee with each sale of a home or a lot in the Serenbe community. These contributions, which we are so grateful for, have allowed us to grow our impact over the years. To show our gratitude, this past spring we worked with Serenbe HOA to modify the language of the Serenbe CCRs to allow us to acknowledge the transfer fees as a donation. All of these pieces are why we have initiatives, projects, and communications in place to be transparent with our annual financials. We release an annual report (which can be found at https://www.serenbeinstitute.org/about-us) that highlights not just our programs, leadership, and impact, but also discloses our financial standing. To accurately disclose our finances in the annual report, we take part in a yearly audit that is conducted by an outside, professional financial firm. (Our 2020 Annual Report will be updated with audited financials when we receive the completed audit in mid-summer.) Our Guidestar Profile is updated annually. United States. Our profile on Guidestar includes information and reports on programming efforts, evaluation tools, financials (990s, audits & other IRS documentation), and various operational insights. For the 4th year in a row, the Serenbe Institute was awarded Guidestar’s highest level of recognition, the Platinum Seal of Transparency. This seal is provided to organizations that, by Guidestar’s standards, value measuring progress & results, providing accurate data to donors & funders, and showing overall improvement over the years. The necessity of financial transparency is clear to our organization. The impact our organization has on the com-

munities of South Fulton is directly tied to our efforts to be financially transparent. Transparency gives us the opportunity to raise not just more funds, but to also increase our community of friends, patrons, and supporters. As we continue on, financial transparency will remain as a guiding principle in all we do.

Order Book: https://www.aint-bad. com/product/books/nicholas-widenerboth-sides-of-the-old-road/

I use photo-genealogy in Both Sides of the Old Road to excavate my familial roots. Combining archival letters, old family photographs, and objects with my own portraits and landscapes, I endeavor to tell the story of my ancestral origins in the Black Belt region of Alabama. My brother, Andrew Widener, is a genealogist at Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Washington, D.C. He has researched, collected, and identified information and oddities about our family for over a decade. Halfway through this odyssey, I began to ride along with him to the Black Belt where the stories he gathered turned into visual imagery. William Christenberry’s photographic ruminations on place and time have had a lasting impact on me. He was born in the Black Belt, not far from where I shot most of this work. Other great photographers like Walker Evans and Andrew Moore have tread there, too. The work of eminent Southerners like Sally Mann, William Eggleston, Harper Lee, and Jeff Nichols have had an influence on me and my topophilia for the South. All in all, I seek to situate and understand my place among the generations that came before and the generations yet to come by searching for the ties that bind them together. Nicholas Widener is a photographer based in Chattahoochee Hills, GA. He graduated from Georgia College in 2013 with a BA in Mass Communication and the Savannah College of Art and Design with an MFA in Photography in 2019. Last year Nicholas founded the Film program at his high school alma mater, Woodward Academy. He is presently teaching film studies and coaching cross country and track and field. Work from Both Sides of the Old Road has been featured in group exhibitions at the Chatt Hills Co-Op, Serenbe Art Farm, and Slow Exposures. He exhibited two solo shows, premiering work from the book at Woodward Academy and Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta.

Wayfinding in Chatt Hills It has been said that Chattahoochee Hills is the 5th largest city in the State by total area. This can make it challenging for visitors to navigate to their destination, which often is a local attraction. So when the smartphone navigation apps fail or take drivers in the wrong direction, never fear: wayfinding is near. It will not be long until you start seeing some new signage around Chattahoochee Hills. That’s right. The new wayfinding signage is being fabricated right now and will soon be strategically installed at various intersections throughout the City to help guide visitors to their desired destinations—and we have plenty to see in our 58-squaremile rural oasis. You likely have noticed that we already have one gateway sign up on South Fulton Parkway at Rivertown Road. This is the style and theme the Mayor and Council wanted for the wayfinding signage. The RFP for this project was issued in July of 2020 and awarded by Council to ASI Signage Innovation in August of 2020. This was a design-build RFP in which the award recipient was charged with the design, fabrication, and installation. The total contract for this initial implementation of this project is $107,900 and will be funded using Hotel Motel Funds. Hotel Motel 26

Robert T. Rokovitz, MPA, ICMA-CM

Funds are generated by the 7% tax charged to visitors who stay in local hospitality centers such as the Inn at Serenbe, La Hacienda Bed and Breakfast, and Air B&Bs. While there have been City Council Work Sessions to discuss the design and types of wayfinding signage needed for Chatt Hills, the City Council Planning Retreat in February culminated in some general direction for ASI. Pictured in this article are the styles and colors of our new wayfinding signage. We have several types to include the primary gateway, secondary gateway, city limits, primary directional, secondary directional, and street signs. The goal of the wayfinding signage is to help our visitors, which often include family and friends of our citizens, find their way to local attractions such as our parks, Inns, Bed and Breakfast spots, special event venues, Hamlets such as Serenbe, and other local destinations. We hope you are as excited as we are about this wayfinding project. Our plan is to install all of the signs around the city under our current contract. Once we get the core grouping of signs up, we can assess whether and what sort of signage may be added in the future.

We accept the challenges—whatever they may be, at any hour, and however the need arises. There are so many unique angles to the Fire and Medical services provided in Chattahoochee Hills. Search and rescue training is necessary to support our park system, especially Cochran Mill Park; drafting skills for fire engine driver/engineers are vital since roughly 65%

of our city doesn’t have water hydrants; and, emergency, trauma medical skills are paramount since we are the most distant city from ambulance services and hospitals. Did you know 18.5 miles of our city’s western boundary is Chattahoochee River frontage, a place where more and more boaters and kayakers are adventuring? Increased river “traffic” makes water rescue skills and resources an imperative for our Fire/EMS personnel. Community education might be one of the best uses of our time, so we make ourselves available to teach CPR, fire safety, first aid and more. We work hard to be ready for any emergency, but the best preparation teaching others to prevent emergencies.
