PROJECT:
DOCUMENTING CAMPUS CHAPLIN HALL
DESCRIPTION:
THE
DRAWING WAS MADE USING THE PROPORTIONAL RATIOS OF BUILDING MA-
TERIALS (BRICK, STONE, AND CMU’S), TO GENERATE THE SOUTH FACADE OF NORWICH UNIVERSITY’S CHAPLIN HALL.
FINDINGS:
THE USE OF MATERIALS COMPOSING THE SOUTH ELEVATION, EXPRESSES A UNITY IN DESIGN THINKING AT THE INTERESTION OF THE 3 BUILDING MATERIAL. SKILLS: BUILDING ANALYSIS, HAND DRAFTING, INK ON MYLAR, PORPORTIONS, ATTENTION TO MORTAR LINES,
+ BRICK COUNTING

WARREN PUBLIC LIBRARY UNDERGROUND LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:
USING PASSIVE DESIGN, THE BUILDING USES GEOTHERMAL MASS AS INSULATION FOR COLD WINTERS AND HOT SUMMERS. THE GLASS DOME HOUSES A CANVAS SHADE OFFERING SHADE WHEN THE LAYERS ARE RETRACKED TOGETHER OR DIRECT SOLAR GAIN WHEN LOOSENED. THE CANVAS ALSO REDUCES GLARE WHILE OFFERING A GLOW OF AMBIENT LIGHT. FINDINGS:
WHEN
DESIGNING UNDERGROUND, EXPERIENCING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IS FOCUSED INWARD,
TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING OF ONE’S SELF AND IMMEDIATE PROXIMICS.
THE
RESULT IS AN AP-
PREACIATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND A CURIOUSITY FOR A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING.
SKILLS: ADA ACCESSABILITY, LOCAL BUILDING CODES, PASSIVE HEATING+COOLING, GOOGLE SKETCHUP, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR,
+ HAND DRAFTING
PROJECT:
SUBLIME VESSEL A PLACE TO EXPERIENCE LIGHT
DESCRIPTION:
THE SITE FOR THIS PROJECT IS A HEAVILY WOODED HILLSIDE BEHIND THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE + ART AT NORWICH UNIVERSITY. UP TO 2 TREES COULD BE HAVESTED TO PRODUCE ROOM FOR A 10’ X 30’ VESSEL TO EXPERIENCE THE LIMITED SUNLIGHT PATHING THROUGH TREES.
FINDINGS:
ALTHOUGH BASED ON A JAPANESE LANTERN, THE VESSEL ACTUALLY RECIEVES LIGHT RATHER THAN PRODUCING IT. EVEN AT NIGHT, LIGHT SHINES FROM THE OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE OF THE STRUCTURE. BY LIFTING THE STRUCTURE INTO THE TREES, OFFERS A LARGE OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECTED LANDSCAPE, WHILE REDUCING THE COMPLEXITY OF FOUNDATIONS ALONG THE HILLSIDE. A DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE SOLID GROUND AND THE HOVERING VESSEL (‘HOVERING’ NOT NORMALLY BEING ASSOCIATED WITH ARCHITECTURE) HELPS TO PREPARE THE INHABITANT TO EXPERIENCE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. A SPACE DESIGN TO EXPERIENCE LIGHT WITH NO ‘REAL’ FUNCTION. SKILLS: SITE DIALOGE, BUILDING-GROUND CONNECTION, LIGHT BEHAVIOR, HAND RENDERING, GOOGLE SKETCHUP, ARTLANTIS STUDIO, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, + ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

PROJECT:
ANDY SPROUTS ‘MOBLE’ HOUSING
DESCRIPTION:
THE ANDY SPROUTS SOCIETY IN ANDES NY WAS LOOKING FOR DESIGNS FOR A 300 FT2 SINGLE PERSON DWELLING, ABLE TO BE MOVED TO VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE SITE SEASONALLY OR ANNUALLY FOR ARTISTS TO USE AS A RETREAT WHILE WORKING ON THE FARM, GROWING THEIR OWN FOOD.
FINDINGS:
ALTHOUGH ‘MOBLE’ TYPICALLY INVOLVES THE PRECONCEIVED NOTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT, EASY TO MOVE, AND (WHEN ASSOCIATED WITH DWELLING) MOBLE HOME, THIS DESIGN USES STATIONARY COLUMNS AS BOTH THE LITERAL CONNECTION TO THE GROUND AS WELL AS THE ACTUAL CONNECTION HUBS FOR MOVABLE PANELS. USING PRE-CONSTRUCTED ‘S.I.P.’ PANELS (PLYWOOD, 2X10’S, AND SHEEP’S WOOL), THE DWELLING DISASSEMBLES FROM STEEL ANGLES BOLTED TO THE BRICK COLUMNS, WHICH CAN BE MOVED AND RE-ASSEMBLED ON A DIFFERENT SET OF COLUMNS. THE REMINANTS BECOME PART OF THE LANDSCAPE, EITHER TO BE USED AGAIN OR VIEWED AN A LANDMARK OF ARCHITECTURAL ‘RUINS.’ SKILLS: SPACE LIMITATIONS, ADAPTIBLE DESIGN, PASSIVE HEATING+COOLING, POST-OCCUPANCY DESIGN, GOOGLE SKETCHUP, ARTLANTIS STUDIO, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR + PHOTOSHOP

PROJECT: DESCRIPTION:
A.D.A. REQUIRES A LARGE AREA FOR A TURNING SPACE. BY USING THE SAME 5’ X 5’ SPACE AS THE SHOWER, YOU CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE AREA NEEDED IN A BATHROOM, ALLOWING THE EXCESS SQUARE FOOTAGE TO BE UTILIZED IN OTHER PARTS OF THE HOUSE. FINDINGS:
DRAINAGE
IS NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE FLOOR.
THE
DOOR BECOMES IMPORTANT, WITH WATER RUNNING DOWN AND UNDER INTO THE LIVING SPACE.
A THIN POLYCARBONATE PANEL PASSING THROUGH THE FLOOR TO MEET WITH THE EXISTING DRAIN.
THE BARN STYLE DOOR SHEDS WATER OFF THE QUARTER CIRCLE POLYCARBONATE PANEL CAN BE SHIFTED TO COVER THE SINK AND TOLET
DURING A SHOWER.
