All species we supply are native provenance grown from British stock. *We have also included some species that were introduced to Britain (often hundreds of years ago) and have been naturalised. These have been chosen because of their value to the environment and are marked with an asterisk. BARE ROOT TREES This is the traditional way of growing trees and they are available in a range of sizes. Generally the small sizes are not only easier to transport, but establish quickly. Larger sizes, however, are sometimes preferred in situations where an instant effect is needed. Bare root trees are available once they have
become dormant. This is dependent on the weather but usually early to mid- November through until March when they start growing again. ROOTRAINER TREES A rootrainer is a vigorous cell-grown one year old seedling, which is easy to handle and establish. It allows the nursery to grow under glass in a controlled environment and produce a high quality, competitively priced plant. All species are grown and supplied in packs of 15 plants. We cannot split packs as roots can be damaged and drying of the root plug is likely to occur. ACCESSORIES We offer a wide range of planting accessories that will help your trees and shrubs to grow and thrive. You can protect them against drought, weeds and rabbits. Product Codes These match the codes in our online shop at www.tcv.org.uk/shop and Price List. Please use these codes when ordering.
Crowbars, Chisels & Trowels CROWBARS & WRECKING BARS
COLD CHISELS
It is advisable to wear steel-toe footwear when working with crowbars or wrecking bars.
It is advisable to use eye and hand protection whilst using a cold chisel. Used for cutting and chipping brickwork, stone and some cold metals. Manugactured from high quality octagonal chrome vanadium steel with a ground cutting edge.
Both used as levers for moving heavy objects as well as for forcing things apart. Crowbars can also be used to make holes or loosen soil. Wrecking bars can be used to pull nails and are made from heat-treated carbon steel. If you are looking for a good general purpose crowbar try C02.
TROWELS & FLOATS Pick the correct tool for the job – if you are working in a confined area a pointing trowel may be more suitable than a brick trowel.

Winches & Accessories It is recomended that adequate training is provided for users of winches. It is advised that users wear sturdy footwear with steel-toe protection, safety helmets and gloves when operating a winch. Winches must be regularly serviced, maintained and examined by competent personnel. Winches save a lot of time and effort when removing tree stumps from the ground. If buying a winch for the first time, you will also need at least two slings and you may also require a cable.

Forestry Tools AXES
HOOKS & TONGS
It is important that personal expert instruction is obtained before attempting to use an axe. It is advisable to wear steel-toe protection whilst using an axe.
Used to drag timber logs for stacking once they have been cut into short lengths.
There is no recommended weight of axe to use, it is a matter of personal preference. However, you would be advised to use a lighter axe until you are proficient. Light axes are normally used for hedging, coppicing and snedding. Felling Axes are used for cutting across the grain of wood, e.g. hedging work. The Clearing Axe has a replacement blade and is only used when snedding trees. It is safer to use than a billhook. WEDGES Wedges are used for log splitting and felling large trees to prevent the saw jamming in the felling cut. The metal wedges listed are extremely durable. The longer the wedge, the more the saw cuts can be opened. When using a chainsaw the nylon wedge should be used, to avoid damage to the saw.
A07
BOWSAWS 21" – This is the best general purpose bowsaw. Its triangular shape allows it to get into confined spaces, eg cutting coppice. It is suitable for cutting wood up to 5" diameter. 24" – Suitable for felling and cross cutting trees up to 9" diameter. 30" – This saw is better for cutting and logging larger trees. BOWSAW BLADES Peg tooth blades are ideal for most general cutting applications but where large quantities of green wood are to be cut, the Raker tooth blade is better suited. TREE PRUNERS Folding Saw: useful for removing side branches from trees. Pruning Saw: This saw, when used with a long handle, can remove side branches higher up a tree, as in brashing operations.

Forks, Rakes & Hoes FORKS It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear with steel-toe protection when using a fork. Forks have a range of uses in conservation work. They are mainly used to loosen soil when digging a hole, forking matted vegetation out of ponds and general gardening. The Garden Fork is a large general purpose fork. The Border Fork has a smaller blade than the Garden Fork, this is useful over long periods e.g. soil aeration and turning, and for use in confined areas. The Manure Fork with its four prongs makes carrying vegetation much easier than the two pronged Hay Fork. The Hay Fork is lighter than the Bale Fork, but the Bale Fork has stronger prongs. Both are useful for stoking and turning fires. The Manure Drag is used to remove debris from ponds and streams.
NOTE: All Bulldog Forks have solid forged heads and varnished ash shafts. Gardening TOOLS The small Trowels, Forks and Mini Rakes are used for weeding, preparing and planting. RAKES Garden and Asphalt Rakes are lightweight general purpose tools for clearing and preparing ground or seed beds. The Hay Rake though not robust, is useful for non-woody vegetation. Springboks and Lawn Rakes should be used to remove leaves and light debris from grassy areas. HOES These are general purpose weeding tools for bare and established plots. The draw hoes are useful for breaking up hard ground. For handle definitions, see the Spade section in this catalogue.

Grass, Scrub & Hedging Tools SLASHERS
SHARPENING STONES
It is advisable that you don’t wear gloves or work in wet conditions when using a slasher as good grip is essential for safe use.
It is advisable to wear gloves when using sharpening stones.
These fall into general types: the brushing hook, used for cutting light vegetation and grass, and the heavy duty slasher, used for cutting woody vegetation. Dunse Slasher, a short-handled slasher, this is used for light vegetation and hedgelaying preparation. Irish Slasher, a heavy duty slasher – best for hedgelaying, cutting thicket, and general purpose use. The Irish Brushing Hook is a heavy duty general purpose brushing hook for non-woody vegetation. The General Pattern Brushing Hook is similar to the Irish Brushing but not as robust. Brushing hooks are made with forged manganese steel cutting blades. BILLHOOKS It is advised not to work in icy or wet conditions as good grip when using a billhook is essential. Yorkshire Billhook. This long-handled billhook is best used twohanded for hedgelaying and coppicing. Double Edge Billhook. The curved blade is used for heavy cutting, and the straight one is kept very sharp for trimming. Southern Counties/Devon Billhook. This is designed for coppicing, brashing and light snedding. Newtown Billhook. This has a straighter blade and is useful for hedging.
The Cigar Stone is to sharpen tools used for cutting grass and herbaceous vegetation, e.g. sickle. The Canoe Stone is finer than the cigar stone and is used on tools for cutting woody vegetation and brash, e.g. billhook. Combination Oil Stone. This rectangular stone has one coarse side and one fine side. It can be used when a fine edge is required, e.g. wood chisel. LOPPERS, SECATEURS & SHEARS Loppers are a useful alternative to bowsaws and billhooks. Loppers can be used for cutting scrub and small branches up to 3cm-5cm diameter. Many loppers are ruined by cutting thicker material. If you cannot cut through in one cut, with little effort, use a bowsaw or billhook. Secateurs and loppers come in two types: Anvil and Bypass. Shears are used for a multitude of tasks including grass edging, hedge trimming and thin non-woody vegetation. SICKLES The grass hooks are lightweight tools designed to cut grass and annuals. The Cranked Grass Hook has a handle that raises the user’s hand above ground. Little Giant Grass Hook. The tool has a disposable blade so requires no sharpening. However it is more fragile than the grass hooks. Scythette. A very useful but fragile tool for cutting grass, nettles etc. The long handle means the user need not stoop. The Scythe is for cutting large amounts of grass. It is a specialised tool that requires great care when used.

Mells, Hammers, Mattocks & Tampers When using any mell or hammer always assess whether safety eyewear is needed. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear with steeltoe protection.
Club Hammer is used with cold chisels or brick bolster on stonework.
MELLS
MATTOCKS
These are used for driving in posts, stakes etc and don窶冲 split the wood. They have cast iron heads and should NOT be used on stone or metal objects.
It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear with steel-toe protection and safety helmet when using a mattock. If operating on stony ground, eye protection is also advised.
HAMMERS
The Pick Head Mattock is useful for loosening compacted or stony ground. It should not be used to break rocks.
Sledge Hammers are used for breaking up brickwork, or using on steel stakes, nails etc. They should not be used on wooden objects like posts, as they cause damage to the wood. The 7lb Sledge Hammer is a comfortable size for long periods of use. The 10lb Sledge Hammer is the best sized hammer for general use. Claw Hammers are a must for fencing and woodworking tasks. They are also useful for fixing some types of tree ties. The type of shaft is a matter of personal choice.
Walling and Brick Hammers are best for dry stone walling tasks.
The Grubbing Mattock is the most versatile of the mattocks. For example, the broad blade is suitable for loosening soil and the axe blade can be used to cut through roots. TAMPERS AND CROWBAR TAMPER Crowbar Tampers are useful for firming in fence posts. Tampers are used to firm and compact gravel, paths etc.
Ball Pein is a general purpose metalwork hammer.

Spades, Shovels, Drainage & Rabbiting Tools SPADES It is advisable to wear strong footwear, preferably steel-toe protection when using a spade. The Garden Spade is a large general purpose spade for all digging uses. The choice of garden spade is down to personal preference but some people find that the treaded version is easier to use on hard ground, and offers improved comfort and flexibility. The Border Spade is lighter than the garden spade and has a narrower blade particularly suited to work in confined spaces, or for long periods of digging, e.g. tree planting. The Junior Spade has a narrower blade than the border spade and a shorter handle. EDGING KNIFE
The Lightweight Trenching Shovel is suitable for ditching and shovelling soil and loose gravel. The Round Mouthed Shovel is more robust than the lightweight trenching shovel and is well suited to shovelling rubble, concrete and gravel. The Square Mouthed Shovel can hold more material than the round mouthed version. It is useful for lifting and shovelling loosely packed material, eg gravel, off a flat surface. RABBITING AND DRAINING TOOLS These are specialised but excellent tools for digging land drains, post holes and deep narrow trenches. HANDLE DEFINITIONS T All wooden shaft and handle. ‘T’ shape grip

This is the most comprehensive book available on the building of dry stone walls and other structures. Dry stone walling is one of the most ancient building techniques, used worldwide where stone outcrops at the earth’s surface. Britain’s varied geology has produced a wide range of building styles, which demonstrate the waller’s skill in making the best use of the locally available stone. The latest edition, revised by master craftsman Sean Adcock, gives detailed but clear advice on all aspects of the walling craft.
Properly built, functional fences are essential for land management. Their main use in conservation is to protect newly planted or regenerating woodlands and coppices from browsing animals. Fences are also essential to permit grazing of pastures, downland, heaths and other semi-natural areas. A good fence will look neat, do the job, and last for many years. A badly built fence will cause constant problems. This handbook gives comprehensive information on all aspects of fence constructionand the construction of stiles and gates is described in detail.
Britain’s 150,000 miles of rights of way are an invaluable resource, which give access to every type of landscape, from urban fringe to riverside and coast, farmland, moor and mountain. Many popular paths, especially in the uplands, have become eroded through over-use. The traditional skills of stone pitching and drainage have been revived and developed to make these paths safe and pleasant to walk, whilst encouraging eroded areas to recover by revegetation. These skills, along with the building of bridges, steps and stiles are detailed in this handbook.
Hedges are an important feature of the British countryside, as well as being a valuable wildlife habitat. Neglect, rather than removal, is now the greatest threat and many hedges need laying to encourage new growth from the base. This book is the most detailed reference available on hedge laying, and gives clear practical advice for anyone wanting to master this craft. Many regional styles are described. Advice is also given on choosing suitable species for a new hedge, as well as planting techniques and aftercare. Construction and repair of Cornish hedges is included.
Sand dunes are fragile habitats, easily damaged by the trampling of visitors. Dunes are also constantly changing, affected by the sea and wind. Any management work requires understanding of dune systems, and the way they change. This handbook describes dune development and details the techniques for buildig fences to trap sand and encourage dune accretion. Details are given on planning and building paths and fences to direct visitors. Marram grass planting is described, along with information on managing dune grasslands and slacks.

55 pages, 72 illustrations Toolcare covers everything a conservation group needs to know on the subject of tools. This includes information and space-saving ideas on how to fit out a toolstore to store sufficient tools for group use. Detailed advice is given on designing and fitting out a workshop for the repair and maintenance of tools, with comprehensive information on sharpening, regrinding, replacing hafts and handles and other aspects of toolcare.
128 pages, 102 illustrations A comprehensive guide to establishing native trees. Thousands of trees fail due to poor choice of species and lack of aftercare. This book gives clear practical advice on choosing, planting and caring for young trees to ensure the success of planting schemes. Information is included on propagation to produce planting stock of ‘local provenance’. Information is included on establishing woodland ground flora and encouraging natural regeneration of trees.
137 pages, 61 illustrations, 13 colour plates, 40 project examples A guide to practical environmental work in urban areas, including habitats which are more diverse than those found in intensively farmed countryside. Parks, gardens, allotments, recreation areas, industrial sites, ‘brownfield’ land and school grounds have a huge potential for local community involvement. These are areas where people can create the type of environment that they want, and put into action their ideas on community gardens, recycling, safe play areas and other green issues.
171 pages, 196 illustrations Marshes, damp pastures, ponds and streams comprise a huge range of valuable habitats, and are vital in absorbing rainfall and regulating water flow. This book advocates the protection of these resources, and of managing streams with ‘soft landscaping’ methods rather than with pipes and concrete. This handbook gives detailed practical advice on all aspects of pond creation and management, building dams and sluices, managing streams, and creating reed beds for water treatment and wildlife.
205 pages, 200 illustrations Most British woods have been managed over the centuries for coppice products, fuel, timber and other products, and their wildlife diversity owes much to this. In the past century, many woodlands were neglected, planted with conifers, or cleared for development. There is a great need to re-establish management, particularly in coppice woodlands. The revision covers the full range of woodland work (including coppicing) with new sections on charcoal burning, green woodworking and the management of woodlands for wildlife.
