Owen Magee , Luka Zonich , Aidan Del Vecchio and Lucas Dal Bianco Team jerseys are often a sportsman’s most prized possession, and for the young football players at the Coogee United Juniors this is especially true. In an effort to combine the fun and athleticism of soccer with the values and skills of Scouts, the club has launched its White Tiger Academy for their Under 5s through to Under8s, and with it a sporty take on the traditional Scouts badge system. The Academy uses specially designed ‘patches’ to honour a host of various skills and values, encouraging the budding athletes to focus on what’s important in team sports as well as providing incentives for bettering their technical abilities. Ralph Delvecchio, the club’s President, says the motivational program has been a huge success. “Since we started last year, there has been a noticeable difference in the youngsters and their excitement to get out on the field,” he said. “After each game and training session, they all form a line and wait for their coach to give them their special badges for their achievements.” Each of the 25 badges have their own important significance, from the Red ‘Eat Dirt’ patch for those unlucky enough to take a tumble - to the Black Badge for ‘White Tiger Loyalty’ and Blue for ‘Smart Passing’. Hilde Risseeuw has been a parent at the club for several years says it’s a tight, community minded group. “It’s a really close knit family type club. They really teach the kids on-the-ball skills and make it fun. My six year old wants the season to run all year!” Coogee United Juniors Registration days are 4th, 11th 25th February 2012 at South Coogee Bowling Club from 2pm to 6pm or log onto coogeeunited.com
