Au revoir! So, that’s it! After an eventful year in the residences, it’s time for you to pack up your things and move out of the place you’ve called home for the last year. I hope that you’ve loved living here and will remember your time in University accommodation as the place where you met your best friends, did your first all night revision session or maybe your first all nighter the dancefloor! In this issue, you can find out all the things that you need to know and do when moving out (p. 3-4), and also of all the amazing events and activities that are planned to help you celebrate the end of the year (p. 8–9). Moving out & moving on Do’s and don’ts for moving out of your accommodation

Stuff to do = Find out when your flatmates are moving out and agree a date for you all to do your bit to make sure you pass the end of year inspection. If you need some support, your Residential Mentor can help! = Cast your mind back to the last inspection. Did you pass or fail? = Think about what you need to take with you to your next flat and decide what to throw out and what to donate to ‘Bring it Don’t bin it’ (find out more on p. 9).

Your year in University accommodation is almost over – how quickly did that go? The exam stress will soon be behind you and everyone will be looking forward to that well-earned break. Imagine sunning yourself on a white sandy beach, sipping your favourite tipple and contemplating how you are going to spend your accommodation deposit! If this is your idea of heaven, here are some ‘Dos and Don’ts’ to make sure it comes true.

Stuff not to do... = End up cleaning everyone else’s mess after they’ve moved out! = Get caught out on the same things you failed at the last inspection. = Leave rubbish in your flat – you will be charged for its removal. = Leave your accommodation unsecure. = Close the fridge freezer door - it will go mouldy!

= Remember to return your keys to Customer Services.

= Take responsibility for cleaning alone - make sure everyone lends a hand.

= Empty and defrost the fridge and turn off at the mains.

= Leave blu-tack on the walls.

= Clean the oven, hob, grill and microwave; vacuum and mop the floors; wipe down your shower room including wall tiles, toilet bowl and sink.

= Assume you will not be charged for damaged or missing items if you do not report them. = Forget to put the shower curtain back up after you’ve washed it.

= Remove all posters carefully. = Report any broken or missing items before inspection. = Remember to wash the shower curtain.

Moving out?

Remember, you can move back in! If you’ve sorted your accommodation for next year, we hope that you’ll have a great time. But as you prepare to move out, remember that you can move back in for your third year or final year. If you haven’t found somewhere to live for next year yet, check out our webpages for details of some of the brilliant properties that are still available. If you’re looking in a group, there are contemporary apartments for between three and ten students with parking still available. And because all bills are included in your rent, you’ll have none of the hassle of splitting bills! If you’re looking on your own, we can place you in an apartment, studio or great value house with other returners. We obviously want you to live in University accommodation because we believe it’s the best place for students to live in Sheffield. A place where with 24 hour security, you can feel safe. A place where if there’s a problem with your accommodation, it’ll be fixed. In University accommodation, the price you see, is the price you pay… Whether you’re sorted or not, the table below may make interesting reading for you!

Private accommodation

University accommodation

= Fees charged by some lettings agents and landlords, from £50pp upwards.

= No agents fees.

= Guarantor required for by some landlords to secure accommodation.

= No guarantor needed.

= Some landlords charge extra to pay in instalments. They often charge rent before you arrive, from as early as July and require one month’s rent as deposit.

= Pay your rent in instalments, with payment dates linked to when you receive your loan. Only £150 deposit.

= Attractive headline rents may only be available for a small number of rooms and may not include surcharges or bills – these can all add up!

= We’re open and honest about rent – the price you see is the price you pay, with no hidden charges.

= The average annual cost of gas, electricity, water, internet and insurance is £920.

= All bills are included in your rent.

= Some landlords charge approximately 1 – 2% for paying by credit/debit card and offer limited payment methods.

= No surcharge to pay by debit or credit card – you can pay in a way that suits you and you won’t be charged for it.

= No other landlord has shorter contracts than us; most charge rent for 52 weeks so you’ll have to start paying rent in July.

= 42 week contracts as standard.

(sniff) The rumours are true - Tapton Hall of Residence is closing We know most of you will be saying goodbye to your accommodation when you move out, but for Tapton we’re afraid it’s goodbye forever! Yes, the rumours are true, Tapton Hall of Residence is closing (sniff)! Since the sixties, Tapton has been loved by all who’ve had the pleasure of living there and we’ll certainly be sad to see it close its doors. The University’s last traditional Hall of Residence has always been known for its fantastic atmosphere and friendly lifestyle and Tapton’s Barmy Army will continue to fight to uphold its memory!

All you current Taptonites have had the glorious privilege of being the final Tapton residents, so savour your last few months because it won’t be available for students next year! Of course there’s still loads of accommodation available in Endcliffe and Ranmoor if you fancy another year in University accommodation. Taptonites will get their chance to bid farewell to this historic hall at the final ever T’Oscars on 15 May. Congratulations to Tapton Bar Team Leader Craig Maltby who won “Team Leader of the Year 2010” in the annual ACS People’s Awards!

Now that your year in University accommodation is coming to end, you’re probably wondering how on earth you’re going to manage to move everything you have accumulated since Freshers Week. Unless you’re staying in your room over the vacation period, you may be starting to look at having a clear out to make the move over summer more bearable. Before you throw everything out, remember the ‘Bring it don’t bin it’ campaign is after your duvets, cutlery, tinned food, unopened toiletries, and clothing. Now that you’re planning for the summer, you’ll probably appreciate getting your full deposit back more than ever, as beach holidays and festivals can be a strain on your loan. It’s therefore important that you leave your property as you found it. This includes giving it a really good clean (as you can be charged if someone else has to be brought in to do the job). It’s also worth taking photos to keep a record of the condition your accommodation has been left in. For more information on moving in and out, check out the Smart Move campaign

Look out for the committee’s drinking diaries which they’ve agreed to complete in order to illustrate the benefits of drinking responsibly. RESIDENT SUPPORT

Award winning mentor Celebrating the hard work and dedication of our residential mentors ACS is made up of staff all working to ensure that you have an enjoyable stay. Each year, the department holds an awards evening to celebrate the hard work and dedication of its staff and announces the winners of the ACS People’s Awards. Dominic Holland, Resident Support Assistant and Senior Mentor recently won the ‘Services to the Student Community’ award on the night! Judge David McKown, Training and Development Manager, says: "Dominic is a committed and valued member of the team who always goes above and beyond to support both students and staff. He was a very worthy winner!” We grabbed five minutes with Dominic to ask him a few questions about himself and his job: 1. How does it feel to be recognised for the work you do? Well, I've been told I work too hard and take the job too seriously so perhaps winning this award is a reward for all of that! One of my Mentors, Chat, won this award last year; he's a hard act to follow so I must be doing something right! I’m pleased, though, to be recognised for my services to the student community. I feel I have an important role to play in helping students adjust to university life and by winning the award, I hope I've helped to raise the profile of Resident Support and underlined its importance to both other

University is a big step up from school and college, and some students struggle with the transition more than others. If I know I've done all that I can to ease that transition,

Minute with a mentor... Aalok Kanwar, Senior Residential Mentor at Tapton Hall, in his 3rd year of studying for a PhD in Political History and International Relations. My Mentoring CV… I’ve been involved with Resident Support for nearly three years and in that time I’ve seen the transformation of University accommodation from predominantly old catered halls, to the new selfcatering apartments. During that time, I’ve worked in the old Ranmoor Hall, The Endcliffe Village and now Tapton. My favourite thing about the job… The best thing for me is the people I meet. Being a Mentor isn’t just about welfare and discipline, it’s about interactions with others and forging a sense of community in the residences. The job is totally unique; no one day or week is the same as the next. That Digs Apr. 10

means it can sometimes be challenging but it certainly helps to keep me on my toes! My hobbies… I enjoy travelling and have inter-railed around Europe, spent a year abroad in the U.S.A, and been on holiday to Japan. Socialising and clubbing are also definite favourites, with Crasher being my favourite night. Following Coventry City FC is a so called hobby, if not a torture! My thoughts on Tapton… For me, Tapton will always be my home in Sheffield. It’s where I lived when I first came here in 2003 and where I made my first friends at uni. I’m sure its memory will live on with the residents who’ve loved their time here as much as I have.

I graduated with a PhD in Sociology and Philosophy of Science last summer. Before that, I completed a research training Master's in Politics at Sheffield and before that I read Economics at Cambridge so I suppose you could say I am a veteran by now! In the first year of my PhD I worked as a Residential Tutor at Ranmoor House, which was later knocked down to make way for the new Ranmoor Village. I took a break from the job for two years in order to concentrate on my teaching and research but came back to The Endcliffe Village in 2007 as a Community Assistant.I became a Senior Mentor when I was finishing off my PhD. 4. How did you find balancing your work with your studies? I think as long as you’re flexible and organised, it’s not too difficult to fit the demands of the job around your academic work. That said, being a Senior Mentor is very different from being a Residential Mentor because I’m responsible for managing a whole team and I’m also required to deal with the most serious welfare problems. Despite the stresses and strains of the job, I still enjoy what I do and I know I've learnt a lot about myself and other people in the process.

Being a Mentor is not only a great opportunity to meet lots of new people and gain new skills in a job that fits around your studies, it also helps to cover the cost of your rent. There are only a handful of positions left, so if you’re interested you’d better be quick! Check your University email account for instructions on how to apply on-line. The closing date is 29 April and interviews will take place from week commencing 10 May.

So, the end of year approaches and there’s been tons happening in the Communities this year with something on offer for everyone. We’ve had some brilliant CDCs in office, who have put on amazing activities and events, and really taken the project to a new level! So, a massive thank you to all four Committees for their great work and to all of you for taking part and getting involved! The Communities Team would like to wish you the best of luck in your exams and with moving out! Have a wonderful summer! But before you go…let’s see the year out with a BANG! Sign up to take part in the final leagues – including football, netball, volleyball, hockey and tag rugby – or come along and support… Last year’s champions were the mighty Endcliffe, but could the new Ranmoor Village snatch the trophy? Or perhaps overall Sporty Sunday winners, Tapton? City Community came a close second in 08/09 – so maybe it’s their year…?

Activities Awards

They’re the Oscars of the Sheffield Union Activities world - the prestigious Activities Awards will be taking place on 10th May at Firth Court. The event celebrates all of the fantastic work carried out by various student groups, including your very own CDCs! Societies, working committees, RAG, Sheffield Volunteering, the Communities and individuals... this is the opportunity for them to get the recognition they deserve for all the amazing things they do! 2010 sees the exciting inclusion of ‘The Best CDC Award’ for the very first time! And all four Committees are keen to win, each submitting their 250 word nomination and examples for why they’re the best! Awards for ‘Most Original Publicity’ and ‘Ethical and Environmental Project’ are also open to the CDCs, as well as nominations for ‘Outstanding Individual Contribution’. Keep a look out for the winners in your weekly e-mail and on the website…

EEK Week stands for Ethical and Environmental Knowledge Week and of course, the Communities are getting involved to help spread the messages and have some fun at the same time! In the daytime, join the festival… = Hippy fancy-dress = BBQ picnic = Ice-cream stall = Acoustic music = Flying Teapots circus skills and entertainment = Build a neon dinosaur!

Build a what?! Bring along your clean plastics and cans and help to create a giant glow-in-thedark dinosaur out on Endcliffe piazza! Students will work together to build the sculpture with help from an Arts Coordinator – on completion, everyone will help to cover the creation in neon paint and it will later be unveiled to local residents and press!

In the evening, continue the festival feel… = Open Mic Night = Neon rave theme with glow sticks and neon merchandise = Big prize raffle = Entertainment The project is being run by your Endcliffe, Ranmoor and Tapton CDCs, who have teamed up with Sheffield RAG to carry out this amazing event, which hopes to raise awareness of the important issues surrounding waste reduction and recycling. The scheme is also being run in partnership with the charity Art in the Park, who specialise in environmental art volunteering and running open access art events in green spaces; the group aim to encourage more creative and social use of parks and green spaces.

As you move out of your accommodation for the summer hols, don’t throw out your unwanted items – bring them don’t bin them! Donate your useful items to us, reduce landfill waste and help good causes all at the same time! We’ll have donation bins placed at your Community, where you can donate things like clothing, cutlery, kitchenware and bedding that might be unwanted but are still in good condition. At the end of the collection time, volunteers will sort through the items and then donate them to some brilliant local charities. Last year, we collected over four tonnes of useful items – help us to beat

Wednesday 28th April Sheffield Marrow 7pm-9pm, Dove Dale, The Ridge. Could you save a life? Sign up to the National Bone Marrow register right on your doorstep at this drop-in session. It only takes 15 minutes!

Join us for a unique experience on the Sheffield Folk Train – a live folk band play music on the train all the way to the Peak District village of Edale; here we venture into The Ramblers Inn for more music and dancing – food and drinks are also available at this traditional British pub – then a train journey back with even more catchy tunes! Great fun! Train returns to Sheffield just after 10pm.

Endcliffe Village student on a charity mission! Endcliffe student, Sarah Robinson, is on a mission to raise £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. She will be holding collections at Endcliffe and across town, so keep a look out; she’ll also be organising some exciting fundraising events with the support of your Endcliffe CDC, so keep your eyes peeled for these too – plans at the moment include a fabulous fundraising fashion show!
