It’s exclusive to the Student Communities and is here to help you have an amazing time whilst you’re living here. This first issue is packed full of information – from what to expect when you get here (p.3)

Digs magazine is published by ACS for the Student Communities. There’ll be three other issues of Digs for you to enjoy throughout the year – your Residential Mentor (p.7) will bring them on their visits and they’ll also be available in your cafés, bars and dining rooms. Look out for the listings posters that will be around the accommodation too. I hope you enjoy Digs and that you have a fun filled, memorable year in University accommodation.

The Student COMMUNITIES

Digs is printed on recycled paper

I’m the Welfare Officer at the Union, which means that I’m here to represent students on issues including money, housing, health and safety – you can find me upstairs in the Union and my door is always open, so pop in to see me or drop me an email at welfare. officer@sheffield.ac.uk

My door is always open, so pop in! Moving to a new city is never effortless and it’s often easy to feel isolated or lonely at first. If things don’t go right straight away, don’t worry. A lot of people may seem full of enthusiasm about what a great time they’re having, but this is often only because they feel that they should be and don’t want to admit if they’re not! Don’t suffer alone. There is plenty of support available from your Residential Mentor, the Student Advice Centre and Nightline (0114 222 8787). One of the best ways to settle in, meet new people and make lifelong friends is to get involved with your Community Development Committee (CDC) and with Union sports clubs and societies. University can be one of the best times of your life, but it takes time - so relax and settle in at your own pace! Nikki Bowater Welfare Officer

ACCOMMODATION INFO 3

Digs, Sept ‘10

Welcome to your home from home! What to expect when you get here The majority of students arrive over Intro Weekend, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September. There’ll be a warm welcome awaiting you at your accommodation, with loads of people around to help and lots of fantastic events and activities planned to help you meet other people in your Community.

Take time to settle in The first few weeks at University will be a bit of a whirlwind and it’s really important that you give yourself time to get used to your new life as a Sheffield student. It’s fine to miss home, to not know your way around the city straight away or to not be the best of buddies with all your flatmates… these things can take time.

Your Residential Mentors (p.7) are always around to offer advice if you want it, or just a listening ear if you’d like someone to talk to. But if you still aren’t happy after four weeks, you can apply to transfer to alternative University accommodation by picking up a form from Customer Services at The Edge, The Ridge and at propertywithUS, level 4, University House.

There’ll be a warm welcome awaiting you There'll be so much for you to think about on the day, but the most important thing is getting to your room and settling into your new home. Here are some top tips for what to expect over Intro Weekend and what you'll need to do when you get here.

Top tips for moving in Before you set off Make sure you check the directions to your accommodation, key collection point, opening hours and car parking locations. Double check the time slot that you’ve chosen for arriving and collecting your keys – you chose this when you completed your E-induction. If you haven’t completed your E-induction yet – do it now! Find out more on p.4 Remember to bring a copy of your Residence Contract and proof of ID with you – you need these to collect your keys.

When you arrive

meet your flatmates and find out what’s going on in your Community - there are loads of fantastic activities and events planned to welcome you and help you settle in. Find out more p.6, 9 & 14-19.

It will be busy on the roads as there are thousands of students arriving in Sheffield at the same time. Please be patient with the traffic, you will get here and your room will be waiting for you! Once you’ve parked up, you’ll get an hour to collect your keys and unload your car. If your family and friends want to stay a bit longer, they’ll have to move to an alternative car park… although you might

want them to leave, so you can get on with meeting your new flatmates! When you’ve collected your keys, make your way to your room – there will be lots of people around to help direct you and give you a hand with your luggage. Once you've settled into your room, it's time to

You might also want to register for your University computer account, which means you can access the internet from your bedroom. There’ll be a registration centre in The Edge and The Ridge over Intro Weekend, or you can wait until you go to campus to register for your course during Intro Week. To find out more about moving in, visit: www.shef.ac.uk/ accommodation/ arriving

Resident Support 7

Digs, Sept ‘10

Residential Mentors Helping you make the most of your time in Uni accommodation What they do The Resident Support team are made up of 88 Residential Mentors who are here to help you settle in, look after your wellbeing and support you with any welfare, accommodation, academic or personal issues you may be having throughout the year. Whether you’re homesick, are struggling with your course, are having personal problems or just want someone to talk to – the Mentors are here to help. Don’t feel that you’re alone. They’re trained to provide advice and support and were once first years too, so they’ve experienced what it’s like to move to a new city.

Who’s my Mentor? You each have your own dedicated Residential Mentor who looks after around 60 other residents. You’ll get to meet your Mentor, along with all the other Mentors in your Community, at your Block Welcome over Intro Week. Find out when your Block Welcome is on p.6.

They’re students like you and live in your Community.

Shhh! As well as providing welfare support and advice, they also deal with disciplinary issues. So if your flatmates are being too noisy late at night (or you’re the one making too much noise!), they’ll help sort it out.

Staying up? Keep it down They’re also here to help you get along with your neighbours in the local community. Remember to be respectful when you’re coming home late by keeping the noise down and following the dedicated green routes.

When they’re available There’ll be Mentors at The Edge Hub, The Ridge and Opal 2 reception every evening between 6-7pm. Your dedicated Mentor will also visit you every fortnight, so you’ll have lots of opportunities to get to know them throughout the year.

Minute with a Mentor Teslim Giwa is an International student in the third year of his Architecture PhD. He lives in The Ranmoor Village and looks after residents of Shore Court and Laddow. Tell the readers of Digs a bit about yourself… I trained as an architect before coming to Sheffield and have a passion for architecture and the arts and I won’t hesitate to offer criticism to bland taste! I listen to a lot of soul music and spoken word poetry, play basketball, watch football and I love to read. What’s your favourite thing about being a Mentor? It’s an ideal part-time job and gives me an opportunity to develop skills that’ll come in handy in the future. The working environment would probably rank as one of the best and, of course, it’s got its benefits and remunerations, such as being able to live in such great accommodation. I really enjoy working with my fellow students and get a great sense of fulfilment from seeing the positive effects of the support given to them. Describe a typical shift… A shift starts at 6pm – I respond to emails and enquiries until 7.30pm when I visit the students in my area to see how they’re doing and communicate information about the accommodation – including delivering Digs. Between 9pm and 11.30pm, I tour the accommodation to check for any noise disturbances then at the end of the evening, I log everything that’s gone on and clock off at midnight. I’m still on call via my mobile phone until 6am and respond to any incidents during this time.

Good times. Bad times. We know that most students like a drink or two, and the first few weeks of term can seem like an endless whirlwind of one party after another. Social events are an important part of University life and can be a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know Sheffield. But, alcohol can lower your inhibitions and make you behave in ways that you wouldn’t normally, so it’s really important that you think about the consequences of drinking too much. Know your limits, stop drinking when you feel like you’ve had enough, and don’t be led by peer pressure.

The residences bars are the perfect place to drink sensibly – check out the ACS Responsible Drinking

Past projects include Endcliffe students helping Whirlow Hall Farm to run a comedy fundraising night, Ranmoor students running crafts and sports at a local school, and helping out at a Community Allotment.

We’ll be recruiting a team of student leaders in each Community to run their own events and activities. Getting involved in your CDC gives you the chance to have your say, organise and run your own activities and events in the bar and meet loads of new people. Your role also gives you great experience to add onto your CV and counts toward the Sheffield Graduate Award.
