Get the vote out!

Digs Mar. 10

One of the best things about our Student’s Union is its democratic nature. It is run by students (eight elected Officers), for students (voted in by you). Those of you who are part of the CDC project will already be familiar with student politics, having been elected to your position by your peers. Hopefully you can all appreciate the importance of using your vote and are planning on using it again in the upcoming general election. There are many issues which have a huge impact on

students, Higher Education funding being a big one. Not only are we being threatened with higher fees, but the University sector has been the victim of many cuts this year which are bound to have an effect on the student experience. It is therefore really important that we make a stand and use our vote in the next general election. NUS (National Union of Students) are urging people to pledge that they will vote for a party who have policies which will support students. By signing up to this pledge at www.voteforstudents.

co.uk, you will also receive information about who the most pro-student parties are, and where your vote will make most of an impact. Students in University accommodation are automatically registered to vote and so there is no excuse- your voice needs to be heard! The Union will also be running a ‘Get The Vote Out’ campaign and so keep a look out for ways to get involved. Jenni Hastings Welfare Officer 3

Accommodation Survey

The Results... The Accommodation Survey results are in! Over 2,000 of you completed the Accommodation Survey in November. This impressive response rate of 36% is a rise from 28% last year, a fantastic improvement that gives ACS increased levels of useful data to work with and enables them to get a fuller picture of what you think about living in their accommodation. ACS said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to all of you who took the time out to give us your feedback. “The survey is a great way for us to find out what you enjoy about living in University accommodation, and also lets us know what we can do to improve your experience. “I’m delighted that we’ve seen so many improved results this year, particularly with Resident Support and your Community as these are areas that we’ve really focused on over the last year and it shows that our commitment to improve has been a success.”

We’re doing...

We could improve the service you receive when reporting maintenance problems

We’re reviewing the systems we use to log your maintenance issues, to identify ways to simplify the process. This should result in a more efficient service. A programme of staff training is also planned to improve customer service.

Some eatwithUS prices could offer better value

Our prices are regularly checked against other similar outlets and cafés, including the Students’ Union and Starbucks as well as against outlets in other universities to ensure that we are offering better value for money than our competitors.

The eatwithUS card could be more flexible without the weekly roll-over

We’re currently reviewing the technology that operates the eatwithUS card system to investigate ways to make improvements and further increase the flexibility you have, as our current technology is unable to do this. We’ll also continue to improve the special offers and events that you receive exclusively as cardholders with more formal dinners and themed evenings planned for the rest of the year.

Our launderettes are too expensive and there are not enough machines.

We’ve carried out price comparisons which show we’re cheaper than other launderettes in the local area. We’re also looking at ways in which we can improve awareness of the many laundry facilities in the residences, particularly in The Endcliffe Village.

A day in the life of... ...an Accommodation Assistant. Elaine McDermott explains what she does. I joined the Accommodation Office in June last year and work with a great team of people who’ve taught me the ropes! We all work together to help current students find accommodation for next year. Some already live in the residences and want to stay; others have tried living in private housing and want to move back into University accommodation. On a typical day, I’ll start off in the morning by responding to enquiries from students looking for somewhere to live. Enquiries vary – some students know exactly what they want and who they want to live with, whilst others just know that they need a roof over their heads next year and that’s about it! My job is to help all students find the accommodation that’s right for them.

There are some really good deals on this year, like a price freeze on rents.

One of my favourite parts of the job is taking students to view properties. It gives me a chance to get out and about, and gives them a clearer idea of their options – most students don’t know that we have houses and not just apartments for rent. It also gives them an opportunity to talk to the current residents who can tell them what it’s like to live there. When students apply to live in University accommodation on their own

Elaine McDermott, Accommodation Assistant we make sure we allocate them with like-minded people, as we know that most returners prefer not to live with first years. But often, second and third years apply in a group with their friends – they can rent an apartment together or even take over a whole floor if they want!

are a great way to meet lots of students and let them know about all the benefits of living in University accommodation. There are some really good deals on this year, like a price freeze on rents plus an extra £100 off and the chance to win a Macbook!

Another important part of my job is to host stalls and road shows in places like City View Café and at events like The Ultimate Fair.

We also like to offer things that other providers don’t, such as free internet, accommodation reserved just for postgraduates, and different contracts to suit the length of your course.

We’re competing with a lot of private accommodation providers in Sheffield – we often work out cheaper and the stalls

Not sorted your accommodation for next year yet? Elaine and the rest of the Accommodation Office team are here to help! Come along to meet the team: • Thursday 11 March, 12-2pm, level 4 entrance area, University House • Tuesday 16 March, 5-7pm, The Edge Dining Room, The Endcliffe Village Or, get in touch with them at: T: 0114 222 4488 E: accommodationoffice@shef.ac.uk

Here's Elaine on a viewing. The students were obviously impressed as they've now snapped up the house for next year! 6

Become an Eco-Power Ranger!

Easter vacation

ACS is committed to green issues and is always looking at ways to save energy to do their bit for the environment. Back in October, we told you about how ACS is supporting the Student Switch Off campaign, designed to get residents of University accommodation across the country to compete and see who can save the most energy. You can still get involved! By becoming an Eco-Power Ranger you won’t just be helping to save the planet, you can also win some great prizes including Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream.

Everything you need to know about your accommodation during the Easter break

Find out more at: www.studentswitchoff.co.uk

Security Unoccupied properties are particularly vulnerable to burglary. It may sound basic, but to minimise this risk, when leaving your accommodation make sure you: Close and lock all windows Close curtains – particularly if you live on the ground floor Set the intruder alarm (if available) if you are the last person to leave Take anything of value home with you, such as laptops and plasma screens Mark your personal property with your room, flat number and your postcode with a security marker pen Finally, remember to keep all doors locked at all times. Do not allow people into the flat/apartment unless they are known to you, your residents or unless they are carrying some form of identification

Sub-letting Do not allow your room to be occupied by anybody else. If a non-resident is found to be occupying a room over this period, they will be asked to leave immediately. If you have friends or family looking for somewhere to stay, we have guest accommodation available. To find out more, visit www.shef.ac.uk/ accommodation/guest

Fridges and freezers As boring as it sounds, now’s the time to throw away any out of date food and defrost your freezer if it needs doing (some properties have frost free freezers).

Maintenance If you have any maintenance repairs to report before leaving, contact Customer Services or the Maintenance Helpdesk on 222 4488. As maintenance work may take place during the vacation, please keep all floors in your accommodation clear.

eatwithUS cards If you have an eatwithUS card, this will expire for the Easter break and will not be valid after breakfast on Saturday 20 March until Sunday 11 April. Details of eatwithUS opening times during vacation will be displayed in each outlet.

Defrost it!

Cleaning inspections ACS will be carrying out the next set of cleaning inspections in March and April, so make sure your bedroom, bathroom and communal areas are up to standard! RESIDENT SUPPORT

Resident support recruiting The Resident Support team are currently recruiting for 2010/11! The first round of interviews will take place during the second week of March. Through a series of tasks, questions and group work, the panel of Senior Mentors and Resident Support Officers will be looking for outstanding students who can contribute to the already strong teams. So, what makes a great Mentor? They should be a good communicator who understands the mentoring role, have a good knowledge of the University and the residences, and be enthusiastic, flexible and confident. If you think you could be an asset to the service and are interested in becoming a Mentor, there may still be some vacancies after the first round of interviews. Keep checking the jobs homepage at www.sheffield.ac.uk/jobs and choose the ‘Apply Directly Now’ option.

Exam Results

Congratulations to those of you who received your exam results this week, hopefully all that hard work and studying will have paid off! However, we know that know all of you will have received the results you were hoping for. Don’t panic about your results, even if you’ve failed. The best thing you can do is contact someone within your department as soon as possible and they can give you advice on the options available. If you need a sympathetic ear or anymore advice, get in touch with your Mentor.

Our survey says... Residential Mentors score highly in survey! We’re delighted that Resident Support has scored highly in the Accommodation Survey and that there have been significant improvements in all areas. Our teams work really hard to provide you with the best support that we can and it’s great that this has been recognised. • 86% of respondents have met their Residential Mentor • 81% of respondents were satisfied with the approachability of their Mentors, an increase from 61% in 2008 and from 37% in 2007 • 77% of respondents were satisfied with the advice/information given by their Mentors, an increase from 54% in 2008 and from 35% in 2007 • 69% of respondents were satisfied with the availability of their Mentors, an increase from 49% in 2008 and from 31% in 2007

“Our Mentor has been a great to every single one of us. She is very helpful, extremely friendly and just a cheerful person to be around. She comes down to our flat not JUST to do her duties but also to have a chat and usually sticks around long enough to spend time with us and listen to us. My flatmates and I love her to bits!”

A minute with a Mentor...

Photo: Isabelle Weerwardena

Where do you live and which blocks do you cover? I live in Opal 2 and I’m in charge of Blocks E1 to E15 there. I also cover Mappin Court accommodation which is mainly for postgraduates. Tell us a bit about yourself – what are your hobbies and interests? Well, I’m a final year undergraduate studying Mechanical Engineering and there is a bit of a ‘boy who loves gadgets and building 8

stuff’ in me! I’m also a pianist, singer, songwriter, producer and band member of ‘One Step Ahead’. Another of my hobbies is swimming which I took to a national level! And finally, my Snooker, which I took to an even higher level, representing Sri Lanka at the World under 21 Snooker Championships in Bahrain, 2005, with my brother Ryan. What made you decide to become a Residential Mentor? When I interviewed for the role, I didn’t really know what to expect or what challenges and responsibilities lay ahead. Being in community service was what captured my attention and is something that I love to do so I knew it would be an interesting experience. Also, the advice given by Mentors who were already experienced in the job gave me a broader picture as to what

Here are just some of the positive things you had to say about your Mentors: “My Mentor has been extremely helpful responding immediately to any problems we've had and either sorting them himself or putting us in touch with the right people. A brilliant Mentor.”

“Our Mentor has always worked hard to make sure we felt at home in our new lives. His attitude and presence really was a key factor in helping me to settle in.”

“My mentor has been incredibly helpful. She helped me out on various occasions taking time out of her day to help me get on track. I really appreciate knowing I can always talk to her if I have a problem.”

Shehan Somaratna the role had to offer. What’s your favourite thing about doing the job? Making people happy! To make anyone happy, you need to get to know them and be their friend. It is also quite fascinating when you learn about other cultures and lifestyles. Personally, it is a learning experience for me. Describe a typical shift… The shift begins at 6pm where I stay near the reception or in the common room area til 7pm to assist students with any problems they may be having. Then I respond to emails and visit my mentees until around 9pm. After this, I do a walk around the accommodation and check with Security if there are any incidents that need to be looked into. I do a second walk round until 11pm. Digs Mar. 10

Welcome to your community garden Get involved and get your hands dirty! Fancy getting your hands dirty? Enjoy being out in the fresh air? Then come along and get involved in your very own garden and help to create a useable space for the local community to enjoy. Tasks include digging, planting, pruning, weeding, watering and other general gardening tasks. Sessions are flexible…do as much or as little as you like! We’ll be kitting the garden out with furniture too, so you’ll be able to use the space for relaxation during exams, as well as hold some small activities or events here and invite local community groups and schools onto the site. The garden will be made accessible for all.

As we said goodbye to our Semester One students, many of their things, which were bought just months ago, were still in good condition – but might have been thrown away as they were moving back home. The CDC Volunteering & Charity Reps decided to do something about this and so organised the Bring it, Don’t Bin It campaign. Useful items, such as cutlery, bedding, kitchenware and clothing were collected at designated areas across The Endcliffe Village. At the end of the collection week, the items were sorted by volunteers and were then donated to two charities; St. Luke’s Hospice and Conversation Club, who work with local asylum seekers.

To get involved or come along to a session, you just need to email Andy Marsden at Sheffield Volunteering: Andy.Marsden@shef.ac.uk, call him on: 0114 222 8544, or speak to your CDC Volunteering / Charity Reps.

Last year we collected over four tonnes of useful stuff... we want your help!

Student communities Just Do It! Students from Ranmoor, Endcliffe, Tapton and City Communities volunteered their weekend time to help rejuvenate a coffee bar for adults with learning disabilities in the Sheffield area. Sheffield Mencap and Gateway offers learning opportunities, activities and social evenings for all in Sheffield with a learning disability. The coffee bar there, which is central to socialisation for the people who attend, desperately needed tidying and painting and our Sheffield students stepped in to help. The project was run in conjunction with the award-winning Sheffield Volunteering based at the Students’ Union. 10

SheffieldVolunteering

Georgina Quinton-Smith, one of the Endcliffe Volunteering & Charity Reps, said, “Bring It, Don’t Bin It is a fantastic way to help others. Not only does it give essential every-day items to those who really need it, but it is also helps the environment by recycling items that would normally be thrown away.” In total, 320kg of useful items were saved from landfill, including duvets, pillows and pans. This will be added to the amount saved by the Communities in 09/10. Last year we collected over four tonnes of useful stuff and we want your help to save even more this year! Look out for the campaign, which will be reaching out to all four Communities, in time to catch you all moving out in the summer (sob sob!). Thank you to everyone who donated this time and look out for Bring it, Don’t Bin It in the summer. Digs Mar. 10
