We’re here to make sure your transition into university life is as easy as possible, as well as being a responsible landlord. They can also offer advice and information about your accommodation options for future years – remember, you can stay in University accommodation for the duration of your course!

Digs Sept. 09

Moving in top tips There'll be so much for you to think about on the day, but the most important thing is getting to your room and settling into your new home. Here are some tips for what to expect over Intro Weekend and what you'll need to do when you get here.

1

Make sure you check the directions to your accommodation, key collection point, opening hours and car parking locations before you set off.

Double check your time slot for arriving and collecting your keys – you’ll choose this when you complete your E-induction once you’ve accepted your contract.

3

5

It will be busy on the roads as there are thousands of students arriving in Sheffield at the same time - please be patient with the traffic, you will get here and your room will be waiting for you! Check the car parking instructions for your specific location.

6

Once you have collected your keys, make your way to your room – there will be lots of people around to help direct you and give you a hand with your luggage.

Once you’ve settled into your room, it’s time to meet your flatmates and get to know your Community – there are loads of activities and events planned to welcome you. Find out more on the listings pages (p.12-15).

9

4

If your family and friends want to stay a bit longer, you may have to move your car – although you might want them to leave so you can get on with meeting your new flatmates!

Remember to bring a copy of your Accommodation Contract and proof of ID with you – we need it to be able to issue your keys.

7

2

8

You might also want to register for your University computer account, which means you can access the internet from your bedroom. There’ll be registration centres in the Information Commons and The Edge over Intro Weekend.

eatwithUS Food & Drink

Your environment We’re committed to looking after the environment and will be doing everything we can to save energy in the residences… and there are loads of things that you can do too!

eatwithUS card the hassle free choice for students on the go

Don’t over fill your kettle – only boil the amount you need If everyone only boiled the amount of water they needed instead of filling the kettle every time, we could save enough energy to run all the street lights in the UK! Switch your lights off when you’re out of the room If you switched off lights that you don’t need for only an hour a day, you could save enough energy to power your TV every evening! Don’t leave appliances on standby If we all turned off our gadgets at the plug, we could save 4 million tonnes of excess Carbon Dioxide every year!

Having an eatwithUS card is the hassle free choice for students just wanting to get on with being a student – no cooking, no food shopping and no going hungry. Just great deals on great food and a chance to eat with your friends or make new ones in the many cafés, dining rooms and outlets every day. It’s really flexible so you get to choose where, when and what you eat. If you’ve already signed up for an eatwithUS card or are on a catered contract, you’ll get £37 per week to spend on food and drink included in your rent. If you’d like more to spend, you can top up by £8 to get £45 per week to spend. If you haven’t signed up for an eatwithUS

eatwithUS outlets You don’t need an eatwithUS card to take advantage of the delicious offerings in the many eatwithUS outlets in the residences and on campus. From deli sandwiches made to order in City View Café to authentic Indian dishes at Shere Khan in the International Food Court, a pub lunch in University Arms to a Fajita Wrap at the Wrapid kiosk– there’s something for everyone!

Take a five minute shower By cutting a minute off your shower time, you could save about 3,300 litres of water a year, saving 200kWh of energy or enough to heat water for 6000 cups of coffee.

It’s really flexible so you get to choose where, when and what you eat.

card yet, don’t worry! You can get one when you move in over Intro Weekend or throughout the year. Choose from £37 or £45 per week to spend on food and drink for each term or the whole year – whichever you prefer.

Recycle all recyclable goods* Every tonne of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees, 34,500 litres of water and over a tonne and a half of Co2. *There are recycling bins in most properties and bring sites in each location, so it couldn’t be easier for you to do your bit.

Water Amnesty Did you know that over 1 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water? October is Water Month at the University of Sheffield and we need your help to reduce the water consumption of the University, its Union and residences. There will be plenty of tips, activities and events throughout the month to help you start saving water and get involved in the campaign. A percentage of the water saving will go to the worthwhile charity OneWater which provides water roundabouts to communities in Africa. So take the plunge in October and help save water. Student life can be amazing, however this doesn’t mean that it’s always plain sailing. RESIDENT SUPPORT

Residential Mentors WHAT DO WE DO? The Resident Support team are here to help you settle in, look after your wellbeing and support you with any welfare, accommodation, academic or personal issues you may be having.

A minute with your Mentor

We’re students like you and live in your Community. There are 83 Residential Mentors across the four Communities with dedicated Mentors for all accommodation.

Whether you’re homesick, are struggling with your course or are having personal problems, don’t feel that you have to solve it alone. We’re trained to provide advice and support and were once first years too, so we know that it can sometimes take a while to get used to life in a new city or country.

Name: Huichi Yeh Where you live and blocks you cover: I live in The Endcliffe Village and cover Burbage blocks D2-F4. Course and year of study: PhD in East Asian Studies, 4th year.

Block Welcome

What’s the best thing about doing the job? The best thing is being able to meet loads of new people, whilst also gaining valuable experience of working within the University. I’ve also got great flatmates – they’re really friendly and we all get along well.

You’ll get to meet your Residential Mentor, along with all the other Mentors in your Community at your Block Welcome over Intro Week. It’ll also be a great opportunity to get to know other students in your block!

What’s the worst thing about being a Mentor? The odd situation involving drunken students in the middle of the night can be quite trying! However, I know that students are here to have a good time as well as study, so it is to be expected and we are trained to deal with that type of thing. Do you have any interesting hobbies? I enjoy travelling, watching movies and going out with my friends.

KEEP IT DOWN!

Tell us about a typical shift. A typical shift is 6 hours long, working between 6pm and 12am. I’m then on call between 12am and 6am.

As well as providing welfare support and advice, we also deal with disciplinary issues. So if your flatmates are being too noisy late at night (or you’re the one making too much noise!), we’ll help sort it out.

6-7pm I’m on duty at The Edge Hub for an hour so that students can come and chat to me, ask questions, or discuss any problems they are having.

We’re here to help you get along with our neighbours in the local community – so remember to be respectful when you’re coming home late by keeping the noise down and following the dedicated green routes.

We’re on duty between 6pm and 12am every evening during term and are on call between 12am and 6am if you need us. We’ll be out and about around the accommodation from 7pm or you can come and see us between 6pm and 7pm at The Ridge, Tapton and Opal Two receptions and at The Edge Hub.

10

10-12pm During the last part of my shift I patrol the accommodation, responding to any complaints and making sure the students are being good neighbours by keeping the noise down! Illustration: Rob Ellerington

When we’re available

7-10pm I pop round to visit the students who I am responsible for in their accommodation. It’s great to be able to see how they’re getting on and help them with any difficulties or problems they might be having. I often stay for a chat or a cuppa and the time passes really quickly!

What’s your favourite thing about living in University accommodation? If there were any problems with my accommodation such as maintenance or utilities, ACS were quick to respond and deal with any problems. Also, living in University accommodation provided me with the security that I would not have had in accommodation on my own. What do you like most about living in Sheffield? As I’m a postgraduate student, I’ve largely had to focus on my studies and I haven’t had the freedom to enjoy the student life here as much as I would have liked. However, the shopping and socialising in Sheffield is great!
