Ray 'Żażu' Farrugia Din l-inizjattiva li nidiet ilMalta Football Association biex tikkomunika mattfal u żgħażagħ permezz ta’ dan il-ġurnal, ġabitli memorji sbieħ ta’ tfuliti. Fakkritni fiż-żmien li qattajt fl-iskola sekondarja meta kont nattendi l-iskola ta’ San Ġużepp f’Raħal Ġdid. Dak iż-żmien fl-iskola kienu jorganizzaw kompetizzjoni hekk imsejħa tal-colour teams bit-timijiet jinqasmu skont il-kuluri; isfar, blu, aħmar u aħdar. Kienet kompetizzjoni li għaliha kienu jikkonkorru bosta studenti u xejn ma kien jaqtgħalna qalbna. Konna nilagħbu fit-tajn, fix-xita, fir-riħ, fuq iż-żrar, basta nilagħbu l-futbol.

Fil-fatt konna nilagħbu kull sekonda li kien ikollna. Niftakarni nilgħab il-futbol fit-triq, fuq il-fosos talFurjana, u fil-kannierja. Dak iż-żmien kważi kulħadd kien iħobb jilgħab il-futbol u allura kont trid tagħmel sforz sabiex issib post f’xi tim anke jekk ikun biss tim tat-triq. Minn dak iż-żmien inbidlu ħafna l-affarijiet. Illum ilġurnata intom ftit iktar iffurtunati għaliex għandkom aktar faċilitajiet, iktar opportunitajiet u tistgħu titħarrġu taħt il-gwida ta’ kowċis kwalifikati u ta’ ċerta esperjenza. Madanakollu għandkom ukoll iktar gadgets. Għalkemm nifhem li huma parti millprogress, hu ferm importanti li intom issibu wkoll ħin għall-isport mhux biss biex tibnu karriera imma biex tkunu aktar b’saħħitkom.

L-isport hu importanti ħafna fit-tiswir tal-karattru. Anke lili għaġinni f’dak li jien illum. Ngħożż il-memorji kollha marbuta mal-futbol speċjalment iż-żmien li qattajt nilgħab fl-Awstralja mal-Paramatta Melita Eagles. Nemmen li fost iż-żgħażagħ tagħna hawn talent, però bħal kull ħaġa oħra dan jifjorixxi permezz ta’ sagrifiċċju. Il-ħajja kollha hekk, mhix faċli u tasal fejn tixtieq billi taħdem u tistinka u ma taqtax qalbek. Finalment, nieħu l-opportunita biex intenni kemm jien onorat li ngħatajt l-inkarigu li mmexxi t-tim nazzjonali tal-futbol. Qabel nagħlaq nappella lilkom iż-żgħażagħ sabiex issegwu u tkunu wara t-timijiet nazzjonali.

Intervista mal-plejer

Rachel Cuschieri Waħda mill-plejers femminili Maltin li qed tagħmel isem għaliha u anke għal pajjiżna hija Rachel Cuschieri. Rachel, li għandha 26 sena, ngħaqdet ma’ PSV Vrouwen tal-Olanda f’Mejju ta’ din issena wara esperjenza pożittiva fil-Belġju ma’ RSC Anderlecht. Hi bdiet il-karriera tagħha ma’ San Ġwann, lagħbet ukoll ma’ Birkirkara u ftit tas-snin wara, eżattament fl-2014, ingħaqdet ma’ Apollon Limassol ta’ Ċipru. “Meta kont tifla, kont nieħu gost nara lil ħuti jilagħbu l-futbol fuq il-bejt u minn hemm bdiet l-imħabba tiegħi lejn dan l-isport. Dejjem sibt l-appoġġ li kelli bżonn mill-familja tiegħi,” qalet Rachel. Ta’ 14-il sena Rachel kisret ukoll rekord ieħor. Dan meta, fl-2007, iddebuttat mat-tim nazzjonali Malti f’logħba kontra l-Iżvizzera u, fl-2008, skurjat ukoll l-ewwel gowl tagħha bil-flokk tat-tim nazzjonali kontra l-Maċedonja. Dwar id-deċiżjoni tagħha li tmur tilgħab barra, hi tenniet li dan għamlitu għax kienet konxja li jekk riedet timxi ‘l quddiem fil-karriera tagħha, dan seta’ iseħħ biss billi tilgħab b’mod professjonali barra minn Malta. “L-esperjenzi li kelli Ċipru u anki l-Belġju kienu sbieħ wisq, pożittivi immens u ma jiddispjaċini qatt li ħadt din id-

deċiżjoni. Dan għax kbirt bħala persuna u anki bħala plejer,” qalet Rachel. Rachel ma sabitiex diffiċli tissetilja fl-Olanda wara li ngħaqdet ma’ PSV Vrouwen qabel il-bidu ta’ dan l-istaġun. “L-esperjenza ma’ PSV Vrouwen fl-Olanda s’issa sejra tajjeb ħafna,” qalet il-midfielder internazzjonali Maltija. “Hawn atmosfera pożittiva u ma nħossx li għalija kienet diffiċli biex nintegra mal-kumplament tal-iskwadra.”

PASS POŻITTIV Rachel kellha kliem ta’ tifħir għal-livell ta’ organizazzjoni u professjonalità fi ħdan PSV. “Hemm ftit differenza mill-passat tiegħi fil-Belġju ma’ Anderlecht, iżda nistqarr li huwa tibdil għallaħjar għax l-ambjent ma’ dan ilklabb huwa aktar professjonali,” qalet Rachel. Filwaqt li l-akbar prijorità għal Rachel hi li terġa’ tikseb l-aqwa forma tagħha, hija tinsab determinata li tagħti sehemha biex PSV Vrouwen jiksbu suċċess fil-kampjonat Olandiż tan-nisa.

Wara li rkuprat minn injury fittul, Cuschieri qed tistinka biex issaħħaħ il-kundizzjoni fiżika tagħha bil-għan li terġa’ issib l-aqwa forma. “Wara l-injury, qed naħdem biex ta’ kuljum insaħħaħ ilkundizzjoni fiżika tiegħi. Nistqarr li jkun hemm perjodi fejn għadni nħoss xi ftit uġiegħ, madankollu l-klabb huwa konxju minn dan kollu u f’xi mumenti jkolli taħriġ speċjalizzat,” hi kkummentat.

“Bħala klabb, ilkoll flimkien qed nagħmlu ħilitna biex dan l-istaġun nirbħu l-kampjonat tannisa għall-ewwel darba fl-istorja ta’ dan il-klabb.” Finalment, meta mitluba twassal messaġġ lil dawk it-tfajliet li jixtiequ jaqbdu l-karriera tagħha, Rachel saħqet li hu importanti li dawn ma jaqtgħux qalbhom. “Il-ħolma tagħkom taf issir realtà bl-impenn, ix-xogħol, is-sagrifiċċju u d-dedikazzjoni,” ikkonkludiet Rachel. JoAnna Vassallo

Where there is a will, there is a way!

Tell us a bit about your passion for sports, especially football…

I could envision that my character and personality would fit perfectly for that role. Apart from that, Kevin Azzopardi (the Malta FA Director of Refereeing) was my PE teacher and he gave me the opportunity to achieve my PE O’level which was not offered at my school. Thus, through experience, he provided the inspiration which encouraged me to become a referee.

I always had a passion for sports. I believe that, through every sports discipline, one is able to achieve the ideal qualities and characteristics needed to shape their own unique personality.

When did you start refereeing and what enticed you to this career?

I had done a refereeing course while studying for my A-levels but I became an active referee three years ago. During my second-year at university, when I was reading for my degree in physical education, football was one of the main sports I had to cover as one of the core sport disciplines. While studying the Laws of

the Game, I could recall asking myself why I never actually started my career as a referee at the age of 16 when I actually had completed the course for the very first time. The very first thing that led me to start a career as a referee at such a young age was when I assessed the qualities and characteristics needed to manage 22 players on the field of play (excluding the club officials).

What has been the highlight of your refereeing career so far?

I was given the opportunity to travel to Germany and participate in a seminar for match officials in my category.

Your appeal to youngsters who may be thinking of becoming a referee...

Where there is a will there is a way! It’s all about believing and achieving. Nothing is impossible… the word itself says I’M Possible.

A right-footed, 17-year-old defender who enjoys building play from the back. Lee Ciantar, who plays at Matlock Town Football Club Academy, is a strong player with good crossing skills...

What attracted you to football?

Football is part of our family culture. My father played football and is still heavily involved in it besides being an avid supporter of Manchester United. From a very young age, I was quickly attracted to the game and gradually developed an interest in pursuing a career in football. Notwithstanding the challenges it offers, I believe that thanks to my skills and determination, I can reach my goals. At one point, you looked beyond our shores to develop further your talent. What does it feel like leaving your family, your friends and your comfort zone?

It is not easy at all. It was initially a very challenging experience where I often felt homesick and asked myself whether I made the right decision. It was a huge change in my life where I had to grow up quickly and be independent. I was out of my comfort zone and all of a sudden, had to handle everything alone. However, thanks to my

Real Madrid and Spain defender Sergio Ramos is my football hero. I believe he is currently the best defender in the world. His personality and football skills are so impressive.

How important is family support to keep following your dream abroad? What do you wish to achieve in the coming years?

determination, perseverance and the unconditional support of my parents, I managed to overcome the initial phase and can now fairly say, I have managed to integrate well within the system.

How did you handle the difference in the level you were used to in Malta and that at Matlock Town?

I initially struggled to adapt. However, with patience, determination and thanks to hard work, I managed to bridge the difference in level. I believe that the progress I have made so far is just the beginning of a long journey. I know that I have to constantly work hard to develop my skills further and reach the standard required at an international level.

Their support was such a huge boost for me. I owe my parents so much for their constant support and sacrifices. They are my daily incentive to keep working hard to achieve my dream. I wish to take this opportunity to thank my parents for all their efforts. I feel it is now up to me to reach my set goals. I believe in my talent and am confident I can succeed abroad. With determination, hard work and feet on the ground, I am sure the desired results will come.

A word of advice to other youngsters eyeing a professional career in football... Never give up. Work hard and follow your dream. Keep an open mind and never be scared to grab any opportunity you may come across to develop your talent abroad. Gazzetta tat-Tfal

MASCOT

The fortunes of an abandoned dog that was left tied to a wooden fence in a Mellieħa field after spending the night in the cold and rain changed dramatically when it was adopted as the official mascot of the Malta Football Association.

The dog was originally named Sunday after the day it was found, yet following a selection process which had several national teams’ fans sending their suggestion the name ŻEPP was chosen.

The name turned out to be very popular as it is intrinsically linked with our language and has a popular appeal. ŻEPP was initially kept at Noah’s Ark animal sanctuary in Mellieħa and was later moved to a new home in a place specifically built at the VIP Car Park, adjacent to the West Stand of the National Stadium.

Il-partiti kollha minn dan ilMini-Tournament intlagħbu fisCentenary Stadium bejn l-14 u l-20 ta’ Novembru, 2018. Grupp li fih ħadu sehem il-qawwa ta’ Franza u l-Belġju u magħhom il-Litwanja. Iż-żgħażagħ Maltin kisbu total ta’ erba’ punti u spiċċaw it-tielet fil-grupp, punt biss taħt il-Belġju. Wara telfa ta’ 1-0 kontra Franza fl-ewwel partita, iż-żgħażagħ Maltin ma qatgħux qalbhom u fittieni ħarġa tagħhom kisbu draw prestiġjuż ta’ 1-1 kontra t-tim qawwi tal-Belġju.

Fl-aħħar partita li ntlagħbet nhar it-Tlieta, 20 ta’ Novembru, Malta rebħet kontra l-Litwanja. Wara li sal-mistrieħ, iż-żgħażagħ Maltin daħlu gowl minn taħt, fit-tieni taqsima skurjaw darbtejn u rebħu l-logħba. Il-gowls skurjawhom Alex Satariano u Marcus Grima.

MALTA v INGILTERRA

3 ta' frar 1971

Il-logħba bejn Malta u l-Ingilterra li ntlagħbet nhar it-3 ta’ Frar 1971, tibqa’ l-aktar waħda memorabbli fl-istorja tat-tim nazzjonali. Din il-logħba kienet tgħodd għall-kwalifikazzjoni talKampjonat Ewropew. Dan minħabba li filwaqt li t-tim Malti kien wieħed mill-aqwa ta’ kull żmien, il-plejers Ingliżi kienu segwiti ħafna mid-dilettanti Maltin. Sa minn kmieni filgħodu t-toroq li kienu jagħtu għallEmpire Stadium, fil-Gżira, kienu miżgħuda bin-nies tant li bosta kellhom jingħalqu għat-traffiku. L-Empire Stadium, li kien jesa’ ftit aktar minn 17,000 spettatur, għal din il-partita kellu attendenza ta’ kważi 30,000.

Kellhom jitniżżlu wkoll in-nies madwar il-ground biex tkun evitata xi traġedja. Il-bjut ta’ madwar dan l-istadium kienu wkoll mimlijin bil-partitarji biex jassistu għal din l-“ikbar” logħba li qatt ra l-Empire Stadium.

WHAT IS SCREEN TIME?

“Screen time” is any time spent in front of a screen, such as a TV, computer, video game player, or tablet. Screen time is a sedentary activity. Very little energy is used during screen time.

SCREEN TIME AND ACADEMICS

THE IMPACT OF SCREEN TIME As children get older, too much screen time can get in the way of reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family, and can also increase their risk for being overweight or obese. There are a number of ways that screen time can be unhealthy: 1. Children are spending more time sitting and very little time moving their bodies. 2. Children learn unhealthy eating practices from advertisement. 3. Sitting in front of the TV can increase the desire to snack. 4. Overstimulation can prevent children from getting the sleep they need at nap time.

TIPS TO REDUCE SCREEN TIME INVITE PARENTS to ask questions and share ideas on how they limit screen time at home. ESTABLISH A SCREEN-TIME reduction policy and determine a system for tracking screen time weekly to adhere to your policy.

Middle school children who watched more television, movies and video games did worse in school than those who watched less. Third graders with a bedroom TV scored seven to nine points lower on standardised tests than those without a bedroom TV. Screen Time and Sleep Television viewing among infants and children is associated with irregular sleep schedules. Teens watching more than three hours of TV per day are more likely to have sleep problems in early adulthood.

DETERMINE A SYSTEM for each classroom to prioritise how screen time is integrated into weekly lessons. EXPLAIN TO CHILDREN why it’s important to limit screen time. Use clear and easy-to-understand language. Ask older children to plan their own activities to replace screen time.

KEEPING THE BALL ROLLING for a worthy cause! Football is more than just a game. Beyond the competitive aspect, football is also a force for good, a powerful medium to promote and support good causes. Social responsibility has become an integral part of football as associations, clubs, players and all those involved in this sport, have been stepping up their ‘game’ to help charities as well as taking an active part in campaigns of a social nature.

To give you an example, in 2007, a players’ committee, including then captain David Beckham, Gary Neville and John Terry, set up the England Footballers’ Foundation (EFF). Since the creation of EFF 11 years ago, England players have been donating match fees to charity and also spend time helping out good causes when they are on international duty.

Through its Football For Life programme, the Malta Football Association not only makes financial donations to several non-profit organisations, including the Malta Community Chest Fund, Puttinu Cares, Alive Challenge and ALS Malta, but also supports several other social responsibility projects on a regular basis.


The social responsibility initiatives co-ordinated by the Malta FA include:

UEFA GRASSROOTS WEEK On September 29, the Ħamrun Spartans FC Youth Nursery hosted an activity with Frame Football Malta where children using a frame to walk joined in a training session with players from the Premier League Football club youth sector. This event was part of the Malta FA’s activities to celebrate UEFA Grassroots week.

‘INCLUDE ME AND I WILL UNDERSTAND’ ‘Include Me and I Will Understand’ is an on-going EU-backed project promoting the inclusion of refugees and vulnerable people, using football and football-related activities as a catalyst. Since the beginning of this year, participants have been taking part in a number of sessions held in conjunction with clubs in different localities.

The commentary was conducted in an animated manner, tinged with humour, some anecdotes and a good deal of fun, by DJs and TV personalities Frank Zammit, Joven Grech (Tenisha), Konrad Sultana, Luke Dalli, Riccardo Flask, Nate Darmanin, Joseph Armani, Valentina Rossi and Peter Busuttil, who form part of Team MT.
