Royal Hakvoort’s in-build Project Asia is revealed at the yard’s Netherlands facility

The 61-metre superyacht Project Asia, currently under way at Royal Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands, has been revealed for the first time. The joined hull and superstructure have arrived at the yard’s Monnickendam facility, where construction continues. Designed inside and out by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design, Project Asia features accommodation for 12 guests, including a master with two en suites, a study and private lounge. The yacht also features a gym, a bar and a swimming pool. There’s storage for two tenders in the main deck garage, while the lower deck includes a massage room and hammam. Delivery is scheduled for 2022. hakvoort.com

Eye Opener Heading for the green horizon Superyachting is sprouting sustainable shoots: Lürssen is building its first project powered by fuel cell technology; Arksen has just sold its first autonomous hybrid explorer yacht, made from recycled aluminium and capable of being recycled again at the end of its life; and Silent Yachts has sold three of its solar-powered 24-metre cats this year, with another four scheduled. Dutch yard Oceanco, meanwhile, has launched an eco initiative named NXT. Aiming to spark innovation towards a fresh, sustainable generation of superyachts, it will involve collaborations with forward-thinkers from inside and outside the yachting world – from Giles Taylor, who shook up Rolls-Royce with his designs for the Phantom and Cullinan, to the Amsterdam-based contemporary architecture studio TANK. The flagship, so to speak, of the NXT project is the pictured). It brings together technical design and engineering from Lateral Naval Architects and design by Pininfarina, best known for its work for Ferrari, and is developed around an e-hybrid propulsion system that uses batteries as the primary source of energy. New renderings have just been released, showing the spectacular and unconventional spaces envisioned on board. Named after the Ancient Greek word for time, the design provides the perfect platform for spending it with friends and family – a spacious, contemplative interior connected to the seascape via vast openings and swathes of full-height windows on multiple decks. These open and on-water spaces are a particular highlight, getting guests as close as possible to the environment that their sustainable choices will help to preserve.

Club together Yacht Club de Monaco’s Cluster Pop-Up aims to reunite yachting professionals after a difficult year

reparations are underway for the Yacht Club de Monaco’s annual October Cluster Pop-Up, which will see the club open its doors to yachting professionals for networking – especially valuable after the isolating impact of Covid-19. The event, which is planned to take place on October 5, will allow attendees to meet, as well as exhibiting 15 yachts between 35 metres and 70 metres for sale or charter at the Yacht Club de Monaco marina. Additionally, it expects to host between 150 and 200 yacht brokers and charter managers from brokerage houses including Fraser, Burgess and Imperial Yachts. “The aim is to highlight the Principality of Monaco as a dynamic yachting place all year round, as well as one of the most beautiful

Monaco. “Monaco needs to be active all year, with conferences and events dedicated to yachting.” While the topics of the conferences are yet to be confirmed, last year’s event, which was attended by 300 professionals, included “miniconferences” featuring speakers from the LYBRA and MYBA broker associations. Burgess head of sales Richard Lambert and Fraser chief executive Raphael Sauleau used the event to put forward their visions for 2021. Meanwhile, Yacht Club de Monaco’s VIP Pontoon will be back in service this summer. Installed in July and August in the Yacht Club de Monaco Marina, it will give a privileged welcome to owners on stopovers, particularly if they are anchored in the bay of Monaco. Last summer, the VIP Pontoon proved popular, welcoming more

Made using traditional techniques dating back to the Renaissance, Buccellati’s signature styles (honeycomb carving, the use of two-colour gold and ultra-fine engraving to give gold the resemblance of silk) have remained a constant since its inception, but each creative director has lent his or her own aesthetic: “My grandfather lived through the art deco years and was highly influenced by that period. My father loved baroque and rococo. I am more minimalist – I love things that are more linear and geometrical. Lucrezia has a more contemporary approach.” When it comes to the manufacturing process, “very little” has changed over the years, says Buccellati. While recent developments in technology has helped to cut down production time, craftsmanship is non-negotiable. “I believe beauty is found in the imperfection of the handmade object. And only artisans can express that element of imperfection. You can’t see it, but you can perceive it.” Nature and floral motifs are very much part of the brand’s DNA and the latest high jewellery collection, launching this month after two years in the making, is aptly called “Il Giardino di Buccellati” (Buccellati’s garden). Inspired by Impressionist paintings, Buccellati sought to recreate the colours of Monet’s gardens with a mix of coloured stones – pink kunzite and

Four generations of Buccellatis have made the celebrated Italian jewellery firm a glittering success, says Lucia Ferigutti ost children ask for toys at Christmas, but Andrea Buccellati’s request was a little different: every year, he wished for some gold that he could turn into jewellery. That’s not so surprising given he is the grandson of Mario Buccellati, who founded the namesake business in Milan in 1919, opening a jewellery shop near the city’s La Scala opera theatre and quickly becoming the go-to goldsmith for fashionable Milanese and royal families.

They would help me manufacture small pieces I had designed, and I wo u l d t h e n s e l l t h e m t o my grandmother,” says Andrea pictured above). “I effectively joined the business at 15 or 16 years old. Every day after school, I sat next to my father as he was meeting with the artisans, and started from there.” Fast forward a few decades, and Andrea is now at the creative helm of the brand, having succeeded his father and grandfather. The latter, he says, “also echo the colours of the clear water in Sardinia and the Caribbean”. A keen yachtsman, he loves to spend early summer weekends cruising the Amalfi Coast and Sicily, and around Sardinia in August. There will be very little time for holidays this summer, however, although he will make sure he spends some time with Lucrezia and his grandchildren. Alongside the annual collections, Buccellati loves working on bespoke commissions. “I am a tailor; I need to create something that fits. I find custom work very satisfying – it’s a different type of challenge. You need to understand the client’s

with our artisans; they truly are part of the family. Some are the children and grandchildren of the artisans employed by my grandfather. We simply wouldn’t exist without them.” The brand’s first big museum retrospective was held at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington in 2000 (more followed at the Kremlin in Moscow and Palazzo Pitti in Florence), and “the greatest satisfaction was seeing our artisans, who flew with us, watch the public admiring their work”. As for future ambitions, Buccellati – which has had stores in the US since the 1950s and in Asia since the 1970s – was acquired by luxury giant Richemont in 2019, a century after its inception. It’s a development that Andrea Buccellati sees as a “huge opportunity for the company to expand while keeping traditions and craftsmanship going”.

THE SHAPE OF GEMS TO COME

Dancing diamonds

Pear-cut diamonds are back, and in impressive style

Chopard’s iconic Happy Sport is given a reboot – with added star power, says Simon de Burton

I

n 1976, Chopard introduced a men’s dress watch called the Happy Diamonds which featured gems that appeared to careen

of those rebirths that the luxury-goods world is so keen on, two new versions have arrived that hark back to the original of 28 years ago. Called Happy Sport The First, the watches come in two series, both of which stay faithful to the skating diamonds and the pebble link bracelet of their ancestor, but which also benefit from 21st-century technology such as Chopard’s own Lucent Steel, a hypo-allergenic alloy made from recycled material that’s not only said Julia Roberts is the face to be brighter than regular steel, but of the Happy lighter and tougher, too. Sport The 33mm-diameter watches also get the latest, in-house automatic movements, an updated version of that deliciously tactile bracelet made from four rows of pebbles and, of course, a dial topped by seven whirling diamonds. Of the two versions, one will be made in an edition of 1,993 pieces with plain Lucent Steel cases and silver-toned dials, while the second

And, with Chopard having been an official partner of the Cannes Film festival since 1998, Caroline Scheufele has been able to open her decidedly impressive Hollywood contacts book in order to call upon Julia Roberts to promote Happy Sport The First. The Oscar and triple Golden Globe winner wears the new watch in still images and in a video campaign directed by the yo u n g a n d p r o d i g i o u s l y successful Canadian actor, screenwriter and costume designer Xavier Dolan – who, incidentally, was just four years old when the original Happy Sport came out. Then, in 1993, Caroline Scheufele (who co-runs Chopard with her brother, Karl-Friedrich) integrated the idea into a resilient casual watch for women called the Happy Sport, which has since been produced in dozens of variations as an all-rounder that’s sufficiently adaptable to look the part in almost any situation. Museum of Modern Art since 1959, Chanel No. 5 was envisioned by Coco Chanel and perfumer Ernest Beaux in 1921, with the aim to create “a woman’s fragrance that smells like a woman”. It was created in Grasse, the small town on the French Riviera which has become synonymous with perfumery since the 17th century. Five was Mademoiselle Chanel’s lucky charm, and legend has it that the fragrance she selected was the fifth sample presented to her by Beaux. The bottle design, with its emerald-cut stopper, was inspired by the shape of Place Vendôme, the view from her suite at the Ritz Paris. To celebrate the perfume’s centenary, Chanel has released a high jewellery collection dedicated to it. Patrice Leguéreau, director of the company’s Fine Jewellery Creation studio, envisioned 123 pieces divided into five chapters, inspired by the iconic bottle, the stopper, the number five, the fragrance’s notes and its sillage (the degree to which its fragance lingers). To design the collection, Leguéreau travelled to Grasse with Olivier Polge, Chanel’s house perfumer, to study

GOLDEN AGE Big, bold and gold – Dynamiq’s new 41-metre Stefania is a future-facing yacht packed with art deco glamour, says Caroline White

orty-one metres of golden hull, glinting in the summer sunshine: Stefania is a vision of optimism. There has been much speculation about whether our emergence from the Covid-19 pandemic will mirror the end of the devastating influenza pandemic of 1918 to 1919: accelerating that tattered generation smack into the Roaring Twenties. “The parties were bigger; the shows were broader; the buildings were higher,” as Nick Carraway concludes in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, summing up the “steady golden roar” of Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age dreamscape. In just the same spirit, this yacht – delivered at a time of new hope – is exciting, inventive and opulent. It’s a yacht for happier times to come. Stefania is the work of Dynamiq, a young builder with an unusually international make-up: the head office is in Monaco; it builds in Massa,

100 per cent engineered in the Netherlands to the highest North European standards, at the same time keeping the prices at an attractive average level of the yards in Viareggio,” says Maria Dobroserdova, Dynamiq sales director, of the diffusion. It also brings an unorthodox approach to the conservative business of yacht-building. It’s brand-savvy, with a list of trusted partners it suggests (but don’t insist) clients use when piecing together their onboard lifestyle, from the lamps on their bedside tables (Bentley Home) to the pens on their study desks (Montegrappa). It’s playful too. Dynamiq’s website, for example, features a “configurator” that allows you to choose every detail of your yacht, from the interior decor and general arrangement to the hull colour and water toys – and to get a price and delivery time. You can almost hear the bosses of Northern Italy’s established yards choking on their espressos. But why not? You’re unlikely to buy the yacht you designed yourself in 20 minutes, but it’s a fun introduction to the process, and one that’s now par for the course in the

had actively been looking for a yacht for more than two years, visiting different boats and attending shows,” says Sergei Dobroserdov, Dynamiq founder and head of Dobroserdov Design in Monaco. “When he came on board Spring (ex-Jetsetter), his first reaction after entering the main saloon was: ‘Now I’ve found what I’m looking for. This is the yacht that suits me perfectly.’ Then, of course, he came up with lots of individual requests but basically Stefania is a larger and more refined version of Spring.” That yacht was Dynamiq’s debut, a 38.6-metre launched amid much fanfare at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show. She was followed by 35-metre Jaaber (ex-1 of 7) in 2017. All three yachts launched so far, including the new flagship Stefania, are part of Dynamiq’s Gran Turismo Transatlantic (GTT) all-aluminium fast displacement series, which Dobroserdov describes as “for more outdoor people who prefer going further and faster” – as

“He was travelling frequently for business and one of his residences is located close to Monaco, so naturally he wants to own a yacht to be able to cruise with his family without any limitations – to enjoy the Med in summer, as well as spending the colder months in the Caribbean or Asia,” Dobroserdov says of Stefania’s owner. The design that appealed so much to this owner originated in Dynamiq’s in-house studio. “That’s what really makes a difference in comparison with many competitors who are all using four or five major design companies and in many cases look pretty much the same,” says Dobroserdov. The defining look of the GTT is slender with a low profile, designed to engender a feeling of closeness to the water. In terms of exterior style, he says, “we do believe that ‘less is a bore’ and introduced many details that make the whole design unique and interesting to discover – have a look at the railings with glass

inserts and the transparent flagstaff, which have never been seen on a yacht before.”

The aft-facing seating next to the aft deck pool feels like an outward-looking, self-contained space rather than a stop-off before heading inside

And that golden hull? The owner asked the yard to look into different paint schemes and they initially considered both white and grey. “The first was considered too straightforward and boring, and grey would be too sporty and jarring,” says Dobroserdova, who was the main contact with the owner during construction. They felt the metallic gold from DuPont, paired with a white superstructure, worked with the yacht’s lines – and just as importantly, with her interior. For this aspect of the boat, the owner knew exactly what he wanted: “modern art deco”. It is an unusual choice for a sporty yacht of this size, as Dobroserdova notes. “Art deco style – even its contemporary interpretation – is normally used for bigger displacement vessels as it’s difficult to fit it in compact spaces and there’s a lot of weight behind the rich look.” Creating it on a 41-metre required thought. “We had to meticulously control the weight and strength of each component,” says Dynamiq’s managing director Marco Ramundo. “We started with a very light aluminium construction, taking care to apply the minimum amount of filler possible at the same time as making the perfect golden painted hull and installing the best equipment without increasing the weight and compromising the performance or safety of the yacht.”

It also required constant observation and reaction during the project. “It’s mainly about picking the right starting points and closely monitoring that throughout the entire build process,” says Perry Van Oossanen, who was responsible for Stefania’s naval architecture. “So it’s not making assumptions but really following up. And if you see that there’s a deviation somewhere in the process, you have to recognise this and counteract it.” The owner also had a clear vision on how this decorative theme should be interpreted. “He was very strict about not having ‘50 shades of…’ so all the interior style is based on the same tone of beige with a small amount of dark-brown contrasts,” Dobroserdova says. The yard’s in-house decorators, more accustomed to creating light modern interiors, worked with designers from Fendi Casa and interior suppliers to find the same tone of beige in lacquered wood panels, suede, velour and marbles – Calacatta

AS WITH THE EXTERIOR, EVERY DETAIL OF THE INTERIOR HAS BEEN THOUGHT THROUGH BOTH TO FIT THE LAVISH CONCEPT, AND TO WORK ON A PRACTICAL LEVEL

>>

The yard worked with interior specialists to find bronze mirrors that were light enough not to affect performance and “Swarovski crystal chandeliers that wouldn’t jingle with every movement”, says Dobroserdova

DESIGN SENSE The aim was to create an atmosphere on board Stefania, rather than just a look. To that end, the yard employed a multi-sensory approach to the interior design. It runs from a warm, glamorous main saloon fireplace, to a Bowers & Wilkins “audio experience” and a “scent system” that diffuses perfume via the air conditioning system.

Touch Surrounded by an all-mirror wall, this modern fireplace is warming and glamorous. “Having real fire is possible due to the bio-ethanol technology,” says Dobroserdov. “The shipyard even managed to certify it to strictest commercial Class and Red Ensign Group standards.” With a range of 3,000nm at 12 knots, Dynamiq expects this first GTT 135 model to visit far-flung and chilly environments where a fire may be welcome.

Scent Stefania features an atomiser system carrying the Bianco di Carrara home scent from brand partner Ferragamo. “It can be distributed through the air conditioning system for a subtle aroma on board,” says Dobroserdov. Adds Dobroserdova: “Little pouches made of the finest silk used for ties are scented with the same fragrance [and have been placed] in every wardrobe.”

Sight The soft golden details found in the interior needed to be in one calming tone throughout – from Dornbracht accessories to towel holders, mirror frames and custom Serdaneli door handles. “Lots of communication and sample exchanges with the numerous suppliers were executed to make it look so stylish,” says Dobroserdov. One of the most difficult tasks was matching the metal stripes on the marble floors – achieved by brand partner Magma.

Sound “Bowers & Wilkins, a long-time partner of Dynamiq, created a very special audio experience inside and out, full of details but powerful at the same time,” says Dobroserdov. Two connection points for DJ consoles are offered in the main deck pool area and the aft sundeck for parties. It’s also possible to create an open-air cinema on the main deck aft using the carbon fibre sun awning poles.

Borghini, Calacatta Oro, Noir St Laurent and Lasa. “[Carpet designer] Oliver Treutlein used his smart-scanning technique to have his carpets match the veneer to perfection,” says Dobroserdova. “All of the metal inserts have been treated by the same galvanising technique to have the same finish – champagne, or soft gold.” Accenting this neutral palette are touches of serene, oceanic blue in loose furniture and cushions, a shade the owner admired on Spring. As with the exterior, every detail has been thought through both to fit the lavish concept, and to work on a practical level. Take the main deck floors, which, instead of plain fitted carpet, feature white Lasa marble – with gold inserts – framing hand-tufted Oliver Treutlein carpets. “The stone is heated, and the golden inserts are flat with the surface – so the owner’s children’s little feet will always be comfortable and safe,” says Dobroserdova. Opulent enough for Gatsby, sensible enough for a 21st-century family. Through all of this, says Dobroserdov, the owner was on hand. “During the three years since we shook hands, he was involved in every

waterline length with a round bilge hull, a low centre of gravity and long roll period, as well as a shallow transom and a reverse bow. “If you have a reverse bow you can get water over the deck, so

small detail; carefully selecting every item including fabrics for exterior cushions (with Sabrina Monte-Carlo) and safe models in the cabins – we used to send each other options and ideas on WhatsApp.” But their areas of consideration extended deep beneath Stefania’s glamorous surface. Van Oossanen Naval Architects had worked with Dobroserdov when he was a broker and owner’s rep at Heesen Yachts and knew his tastes well. “The philosophy of Dynamiq is very much about building efficient vessels, so they’re all long and slender,” says Perry van Oossanen. “That was our brief – to design a very efficient and comfortable hull form and to carry that through the naval architecture and engineering package.” This involved the studio’s patented Fast Displacement Hull Form, which is aimed at high efficiency over the entire speed range. “The boat has a maximum speed of over 20 knots, but she’s equally efficient cruising at 12 or 14 or 16 knots,”

we spent a lot of time investigating the shape there and working with spray deflectors to keep the deck dry,” says van Oossanen. She also features zero-speed fin stabilisers and Van Oossanen’s patented Hull Vane: “a hydrofoil mounted at the stern, which basically lifts the stern at speed, which also improves the efficiency.” The approach to the layout was equally efficient. The yacht will be used for charter, so to ease service the crew traffic, pantries, appliances and water toy storage were properly planned from the very beginning. “What I liked in particular among the owner’s requests – and this is what we will definitely use on all other projects – is the amount of electrical sockets both in the interior and on open decks, which enables you to charge your mobile or laptop almost everywhere,” says Dobroserdov. “Guest cabins are equipped with tasteful contactless leather charging spots.” As the largest in the GTT range, Stefania houses five voluminous cabins (Spring has four),

says van Oossanen. Stefania features a long

There was room for generous head heights of 2.2 metres on all decks and a 4.5-tonne, 10-guest swimming pool on the main aft deck – comparable to the proportions you might expect to find on a 60-metre. audio at sea. Integrators and yacht builders are increasingly pushing the sonic envelope, much to the delight of owners.

“One of the major benefits of Island is that it’s completely self-contained,” explains Nick Fichte from L-Acoustics Creations. “Often with yacht interiors,

With onboard space a precious commodity, accommodating loudspeakers has been a long-standing challenge. But what if you’re no longer constrained by the trappings of traditional speaker design? What if technology made loudspeakers, to all intents and purposes, invisible? A leading specialist in invisible loudspeakers is Amina Technologies. The company, based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, has become a world leader in discreet speaker technology. Unlike conventional enclosures, Amina’s speaker panels are designed to be covered and hidden from view. Vibrational Panel Technology (VPT) can be plastered or panelled over, leaving no trace of a sound system – just the curious realisation that stereo sound appears to be emanating, crisp and sharp, from a wall or decorative feature.

it can be difficult to house loudspeakers due to design constraints, but with Island they are all built in. We’ve recently been looking at a project where the client wanted a sizable LED screen, a Samsung Wall, for watching movies at night. Island is perfect for this as you don’t have to worry about where to place loudspeakers. With it in front of the display, the audio is in exactly the right place.” And, just for fun, the entire Island rotates. If you want to enjoy the view of the Caribbean or the Med during the day, that’s not a problem – just spin it round and take in the view. The Island isn’t just a cinema experience, though. It also supports L-Acoustics’ L-ISA sound format, which offers 24 channels of uncompressed 24-bit 96kHz hi-res audio, delivered via proprietary “Bubbles”. “Yacht owners and their guests are renowned for appreciating the finer things in life,” says Fichte. “So Island

An early beneficiary of this technology was 35.5-metre Lunar, built by Conrad Shipyard in Poland. Its stylish interiors offer no hint of a pervasive audio system. The boat has been fitted with a dozen Amina Invisible Loudspeakers by Estonian integrator Betria OU. They’re deployed across three zones and provide hi-fi and surround sound without any obvious visual intrusion. When used in residential properties, Amina’s speakers are hidden from view by a two-millimetre skim of plaster, but VPT also works under leather or wood veneer, making it perfect for a marine fit-out. The panels used in Lunar are light, 200 millimetres wide and just 40 millimetres deep, and there’s no back box required. Instead, so-called exciters create hundreds of tiny vibrations – a similar principle, the brand says, to how an acoustic guitar works. On board, the master suite features a full surround-sound installation, although you would never know that from its appearance. There are three front speakers, mounted in the ceiling and covered in Alcantara faux leather, and at the rear there are compact cluster units built into the bedhead and veneered over as part of the wall and headboard finish. Similarly, the boat’s saloon aft has a surround sound system comprising five “invisible” panels fitted into the ceiling, again behind Alcantara leather. The sound appears to be coming from an in-wall position. A VPT speaker’s frequency range is typically 100Hz to 20kHz, which

includes a Bubble Deck, which allows playback of custom-created audio content in a 23.1 audio standard known as BluSpace.” To play the recordings available in this native L-ISA Bubble format, you place the corresponding Bubble (which looks a bit like a snow globe) on the player behind the seat. The Bubble then glows and the music plays with astonishing clarity. What’s actually happening is that a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip inside the Bubble unlocks and plays the recording that’s saved on a connected hard drive. It’s a heck of a theatrical party trick. While the Island is a relatively compact sound solution, some yacht owners prefer to go supersize. Dynamiq’s flagship GTT 135 Stefania features a dedicated beach club area with Bowers & Wilkins sound design, while Heesen’s 50-metre Crazy Me has an upper deck that can double as a full-sized disco. The pool transforms into a dance floor, while custom California Audio Technology speakers pump out the tunes from the bulwarks. And why stop there? “Boat owners are increasingly using the helipad area on their yacht support vessels as a giant dance floor, with a full-blown sound system,” says Fichte. Damen Yachting threw a party on the back of one of its support vessels at the Monaco Yacht show in 2019, he says. “They hired a DJ, with a full outdoor club sound system.” Far-sighted high-end audio brands have been quick to see the potential of migrating their expertise from sofa to sundeck. I always order their special seafood paella. The decor is simple, with just a few tables, nothing fancy – it’s the food that’s the real draw here. There are only four tables, but people fly in by helicopter from Athens just to eat there. It’s run by a couple – the wife, Antonia, is in charge of the kitchen. The food is incredible; lots of fresh fish, homemade cheeses and homegrown vegetables and herbs. It is in the bay of Ysternia to the north-west of the island and is literally on the sea. y favourite part of the Mediterranean for fine food is Puglia in south-east Italy. If you are there it is worth the trip inland to Osteria Botteghe Antiche, a simple tavern set on a beautiful square in the historic centre of Putignano. It serves excellent carne di’asino [donkey meat, a delicacy of Puglia], which you can eat as a fillet, grilled and stuffed with broad bean purée, as bresaola [cured meat] with sauce, or served with fresh orecchiette, a typical local pasta. You need to make sure you save room for dessert as the most delicious thing on the menu is the fried zeppole – an Italian pastry – served with cream. There is also a well-stocked wine list with many local and natural wine labels, so it’s perfect for a long lunch. Location 40°50'58.1"N 17°07'21.9"E bottegheantiche.com

ust off Anguilla there’s a shack on a tiny island called Sandy Island – and when I say a tiny, I mean it’s smaller than a football pitch. They just have picnic tables with palm trees for shade, and it’s just perfect.

Once you’re ashore suddenly all these other boats pull up out of nowhere. Someone puts music on, everyone has lobsters and margaritas, and you are left wondering, how did this happen? It’s definitely a local’s secret and you never know who you are going to bump into. It’s one of those urban myth islands – every captain rings another when the party is on. It almost seems a shame to blow its cover.

When he returned to his native Sifnos, eight years ago, he launched Omega 3, which has become synonymous with raw and cooked fish dishes that are, unsurprisingly, heavily influenced by Giorgios’ scientific background and global adventures. Think ceviches, tiraditos (a Peruvian dish of raw fish), carpaccios and even tacos, all with a Greek twist. Market overview Sotheby’s International Realty in Greece has seen a surge in interest in luxury properties in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. “There has been a sharp increase in demand for homes that can be considered as private retreats,” explains Sotheby’s Savvas Savvaidis. “Corfu and the Greek islands are magnets for corporate nomads who are no longer tied to traditional working regimes. Working from home on a Greek island offers a lifestyle previously enjoyed only on vacation.”

Villa with a View One home good, two homes better: this sprawling new complex on Corfu’s north-east coast offers the complete package for family fun, says Sophia Wilson

two hectares, with “some of the finest views in Corfu”, according to Savvas Savvaidis, president and CEO at Greece Sotheby’s International Realty. The two main residences – which have four and five en-suite bedrooms respectively – are connected via an underground tunnel and there is an additional two-bedroom gatehouse. The façades of the properties are made from hand-cut white stone and their low profiles ensure they blend in with the landscape. Both homes feature open-plan living spaces with a light colour palette, high vaulted ceilings and large glass sliding doors.

“The design inspiration came from the owners who, with the help of local craftspeople, were able to achieve their vision,” explains Savvaidis. “The concept was to create a contemporary, smart home, that reflected both the traditional architectural style of Corfu as well as the many places in the world the owners have travelled to.” Magna Grecia has been designed to mimic the facilities of a five-star hotel and has a huge wellness area including an indoor pool, massage room, steam room, sauna and spa pool. For fitness enthusiasts there is a gym, fully equipped with Precor equipment, with a changing room, shower and lounge. There is also a dedicated yoga platform next to the 28-metre outdoor swimming pool. The property boasts a state-of-the-art cellar, cognac selection and lounge bar too. The backlit bar has a marble counter with stools as well as a separate seating area, with dark-wood panelling and downlighting, creating a sophisticated atmosphere. On the extensive outdoor terraces there is room for more than 30 people to dine comfortably overlooking the pool. For more relaxed entertainment

there is a media room with a huge TV screen. Smart-home technology and the latest security systems have been fitted throughout the property. The security package includes a high-spec alarm, intelligent surveillance system, drone defence system and a safe room. The property has a private 19-metre jetty with security cameras and electricity, so it’s ideal for heading off to explore the secluded bays of Corfu’s north-east coastline.
