News & reviews Sunny side up
Dave Gibbons remembers The recollections of An Accidental Polymath is a memoir penned by Dave Gibbons of Rough Diamond Altered notoriety. Not specifically a car book, the light hearted and frequently funny text embraces everything from family and upbringing to relationships and injuries. Understandably, there are frequent mentions of cars and motorsports activities, which are not limited to drag racing. Russ Smith helped with some of the edit and the book contains a foreword by John Price. Although Dave never intended for the book to be widely published, it has so far been well received and he wants to expose it to a wider audience. After all, each paperback copy sold earns him 13p! The book is only available on Amazon, in either paperback or eBook format. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B093B238QX
The first Sunday of each month sees a new breakfast meet on the calendar. It’s held at Porky’s Diner on the Honeybourne Airfield Trading Estate (Two Shires Park), Evesham (WR11 7QF) and runs from 9am to 12 noon. If it helps you get your bearings, the diner is exactly eight miles from where Shakespeare County Raceway used to be. There is ample of on-site parking, the food is great with some challenging deals for those with a big appetite. Ringing to pre-order food so as not to be disappointed if it’s busy is recommended. Ed and shoulders I make no apologies for the contents of the news pages in this issue being pretty much summed up in one word – events. With lockdown having become less restrictive in recent weeks, gates are being opened, venues wiped down and cars polished in eager anticipation. And boy, are we here at CC ready for it. Okay, smaller local events with social distancing have been occurring with increased regularity of late, but it’s now time for the big hitters to make their voices heard again. By the time this issue hits the shelves, or drops on your door mat, the NSVA Truck-In will have come and gone, as will the National Hot Rod, Custom and American Car Show in Peterborough. The first weekend this issue is on sale will still the staging of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Dragstalgia and the VHRA Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races, to name but three. Further ahead come the Mopar Euro Nationals and the NSRA Supernats, and beyond that the floodgates really start to open. Isn’t the sound of all that sweet music

to your ears? Cars, people, racing, laughter and social interaction once more. Whilst that all sounds like a distant memory of a previous life, right now it is looking like reality. That said, we must all be careful not to let our guards down too easily. So help the clubs and show organisers out, stick to the rules and that light at the end of the tunnel can only get brighter. That must surely be our focus. See you there. Dave Biggadyke

multiple national and regional finals, as well as the US Nationals every year from 1963 through to ’67. The famous metallic fuchsia car is thought to have not run in competition for over 25 years, but where we’d really like to see it is on the drag strip at Santa Pod, where it rightly belongs.

An official announcement has recently been made following many months of uncertainty surrounding the 2021 FIA European Drag Racing Championship events at the Tierp Arena and Santa Pod Raceway. Drag Racing Europe, along with the FIA, reached a decision that even a two-round FIA Shootout Cup will not be possible to hold, owing to Covid-19 restrictions on travel and quarantine regulations. The current plan is for each venue to hold its own event under ASN national rules and permits, making them both now National events. Any international teams wishing to attend either event are welcome as always.

Pin pointing Dear CC, further to DB’s Ed and shoulders piece in the June issue, I remember going down to Jago’s place sometime in the mid-’70s. There was a UK map on the wall with a load of pins in it. Geoff said each pin represented the sold-to location of one of his T bodies. I can’t remember the exact number but it was around 100, which we found difficult to believe as we could only think of about 10 finished cars at the time, and we were pretty active on the rodding scene at that time. Bob Roberts, via email
> That’s some memory of times gone by, eh Bob? I can easily believe Geoff sold
Pressing issues Dear CC, I’m writing with reference to Ed’s comments in the July issue about National Drag Racer magazine. The first issue was dated July-August 1971 and publication ran until issue 44, dated February 1976. Having received a complimentary issue from my mate, the late Tony Beadle, a contributor to the magazine, I quickly signed up and waited impatiently for each

over 100 bodies as we’ve heard similar stories from many body and chassis manufacturers over the years. The reality is very few of them ever actually make it onto the road, which makes us wonder how many are still festering in lock ups around the country? Ed. subsequent issue until its sad demise. In those pre-internet days, the mag was a great way to keep abreast of who was doing what. Greatly missed. Glyn Jenkins, via email Dear CC, the answer to the question Ed posed in the July issue is that National Drag Racer magazine ran from July ’71 until Feb ’76, 44 issues in total. There was also one pictorial special which, if I recall correctly, came out after the last issue. I hope this helps. Cover shots attached. Graham Thompson, via email
Dear CC, in the June issue you questioned how many Jago-bodied hot rods are out there. I can tell you of one I know of as I’ve just purchased a Model T. The car was built in 1971 and appeared in a Shredded Wheat TV advert in 1986, though was subsequently left in a damp garage for over 30 years after that. I plan to restore it ’70’s style. Dave Oconnell, via email
> Wow, that’s a piece of UK hot rodding history Dave, and just look at that registration number. I found the old TV advert on YouTube under the title ‘1986 Shredded Wheat One Step Ahead Advert’ and had a little chuckle at the dubbed tyres screeching on dirt. Please keep us updated with your progress on the restoration. We can’t wait to see the end result. Ed.
> Thanks for the definitive answers guys. I had a couple of cursory glances on eBay but nothing there, so I guess I’ll be scouring the swapmeets more thoroughly later this year. Ed.
Golden state Dear CC, I was intrigued to see the mention of my brother John’s Mk2 Jag on p65 of the July issue. Having both been made redundant in 1972, I suggested we visit California to check out the real McCoy, after becoming imbued with blown nitro cars since our first visit to Santa Pod. We made that trip in late ’73, after having the Jag shipped out first so we had some wheels to roam around in. Initially intending to stay for three months, we ended up sticking around for a year longer than that (long story). John later bought himself a ‘67 Camaro SS to run aboutt in and I drove the Jaguar for quite

some time. We visited a variety of drag racing tracks and were made very welcome by the coterie of snappers that lined the guardrails, forging some firm friendships in the process. John made some mild custom additions to the Chevy, along with a respray in white. When we decided to return home in time for Christmas ‘74, it meant selling the Mk2 and making arrangements for the almost 3,000-mile road trip to New York. The Chevy behaved impeccably, apart from a misfire that tha was cured through a visit to the famed Jegs in Columbus, Ohio, Oh and we arrived well in tim time for our booked passage across the Atlantic on the QE2. ac The Camaro, known as Cocky Wheels, was exhibited at the W ‘75 Custom Car Show before ‘7
being resprayed silver and d taken to Sweden for a show where it was sold. It was featured in HOT ROD in July ’75 and, priorr to that, in the March ‘75 issue of Custom Car. John returned to a ‘normal’ life and now lives on the Isle of Wight. I, on the other hand, have been unable to shake the drag racing drug. A passion which continues to this day. Andy Willsheer, via email
> What a great story Andy. Sounds like you and John had a fine old time in the States, and I will question you on the ‘long story’ when I next see you trackside. Ed.

Wagons roar
f you’ve ever heard the expression ‘third time’s a charm’ it’s never been truer than in the case of Mike Rowell of Halifax, Massachusetts and his wicked ’60 Chevrolet Parkwood wagon. It all started in 2001 when Mike was looking for a new project. Having always been a fan of station wagons, he envisioned the classic body style of one from the late ’50s or early ’60s, but updated with a slammed and air rideequipped stance more in keeping with contemporary trends as the perfect cruiser for him and his family. After doing his research, he eventually found the perfect candidate online, offered by a seller in Arizona. The car was already Chevy small block-powered, had air suspension and was advertised as rust free. Aren’t they all?
somehow the car found its way back to Mike for a third time He wasted no time and made the buy, but what rolled off the trailer when it was delivered was far from what he had hoped for. The rear quarter panels were filled with spray foam and plastic filler, and the rear section of the roof was rotten. That was just the start, but a quick check over the rest of the car revealed that it was driveable as it was, he’d just have to plan to sort the bodywork issues out further down the line.
Family cruiser
■ Words and Pics:
Rather than be put off by the disappointing condition, along with his son, Mike junior, he did some initial repair work to tidy up the more obviously poor bits and sent the car off for a quick paint job so it was at least all one colour. Just as he planned all along, he then used it as a family cruiser for around five years before deciding to sell it to fund another project. But for some reason – and even Mike’s not quite sure why – he bought it back again a few years later, and then basically did the same thing all over again, doing a bit more work to it before selling it again. You might think that enough’s enough and that would be the end of the tale, but the opening line of the feature suggests otherwise. That’s right, somehow the car found its way back to Mike for a third time, but this time round he resolved to give it a proper makeover, and turn it into the car he’d wanted right from the start.
driveshaft and fabbed up a 4-link rear suspension to locate the new Strange Engineering 9-inch axle. That’s filled with 3.83 gears spun by 31-spline axles, all from the same company. Though the car had air suspension already, the market has moved on in leaps and bounds since it was fitted, so he chose to replace what was there with a pair of Slam Specialties RE-7 ’bags at the rear, along with a pair of Pete & Jakes shocks and a one-inch Panhard bar.
this is Custom Car you’re reading, not Practical Classics ° Like the rest of the car, the interior has been given a full refresh and update, centered around a pair of late mode Pontiac Trans-Am electric recliners. That’s reduced the seating capacity by one. Interior paint is a satin version of the Synergy Green exterior.
After owning the car so many times, he’d had a good chance to study it in detail and knew where the problem areas were. Having also driven it many miles, he knew what he liked about it, too. So, armed with all that knowledge, he decided to split the body and frame and, while he got busy stripping the body back to bare metal in his home shop, he sent the original frame out to be blast cleaned. With a clean frame to work with, he modified it to accept a new one-piece
A similar course of action was then taken at the front end. To bury it even further into the pavement, Mike modified the lower control arms and updated the uppers to tubular ones from CPP. Matched with another pair of RE-7 ’bags, along with Pete & Jakes shocks and a similar diameter anti-roll bar, it now sits lower than it ever did, but with improved ride quality.
Fluid cycle To stop the big ole’ hauler, fluid moves through steel hard lines from a dualcircuit master cylinder from Wilwood out to 13-inch Wilwood discs and four-piston calipers up front and 12-inch units out back. Finally, he felt all the improvements underneath deserved a more visual update so swapped to 18 and 20-inch Boss Motorsports Model 338 wheels, wrapped
up tight in Toyo Proxes low-profile rubber. Now that’s a statement in itself on a car made in 1960, but Mike wasn’t finished yet. Not by a long shot. Wanting to make sure no one missed the wagon wherever it went, he decided a blown big block sticking up through the bonnet was necessary. That’s the kind of necessary all us hot rodders understand, but not necessarily the rest of the people in our lives. He didn’t want to lose the car’s daily driver abilities, though, so the spec of the engine had to be carefully considered. For that, he contacted Big Al’s Toy Box in Gaylordsville, Connecticut and between them they agreed on a 468 cubic inch capacity for the mighty Chevy, whose

internals include an Eagle forged crank, steel H-beam rods and forged aluminium pistons. A custom ground stick from Comp Cams sets the beat, while a pair of massaged AFR aluminium heads help it all generate power. Plenty power. Add a fully polished 8-71 huffer from The Blower Shop, though, along with a pair of Holley 950cfm carbs, and a dyno’d power output of 763bhp and it all starts to stray to the very limits of daily driver. But hey, this is Custom Car you’re reading, not Practical Classics, and we get it.

¿ It’s a big car that can swallow a set of 18 and 20-inch wheels like this without breaking a sweat. Those wheels are Boss Motorsports Model 338s, tyres are 245/40-18s on the front, 265/35-20s on the rear.
All that hard earned power then moves rearward through a GM 200R4 auto’ transmission, hopped up by CK Performance of Holbrook, New York. With an engine polished to perfection and standing proud, it wouldn’t do to not have a spanking engine bay for it to sit in, so the body was next on Mike’s hit list. This time round though, rather than make good what’s there he decided to go the whole hog and replace the inner and outer rear quarters. Remember the rot in the roof mentioned earlier? That was next for the bin, along with the four foot of outer roof skin ahead of it. And if it’s gone up top, chances are it’s gone down below too, so a complete new floorpan went in as well. Thank heavens for the likes of Eckler’s (www.ecklerscorvette.com) and Classic Industries (www.classicindustries. com), who offer a wide range of repair panels for all years of classic Chevy. Mike followed all that fundamental panel work by some more detail metalwork, filling any unwanted holes in the firewall, shaving all the exterior handles and adding exhaust cutouts through the sills.
Body tune up He then called upon his good friend, Dave Gasse, who replaced the bottoms of all four original doors, as well as crafting an interior console for the car from steel. When the whole car was deemed sound again, the body was handed over to Bob Coffey to work his magic making it razor sharp and putting a tune up on all the gaps.
© One way to gain the necessary clearance for massive rollers is to remove the inner wings, though you’d better be ready for some serious cleaning after a long drive. CPP tubular control arms and Slam Specialties RE-7 ’bags work in concert with Pete & Jakes shocks and anti-roll bars front and rear.
John Montanaro of North Falmouth then filled his spray gun and brought it all to life by laying down the decadent coating of Standox Synergy Green and silver to the exterior, which is set off by the same colour tones inside, but in polished suede, this time applied by Mike junior. Inside, the stock dash was filled and shaved and treated to an array of Auto Meter dials, while a Billet Specialties steering wheel navigates the road with shifts by Lokar.
a soundtrack to make the streets shake Finally, Don’s Custom Auto Upholstery of Plymouth stitched up the one-off interior in two-tone grey leather, using late model Trans Am buckets and a custom made rear seat, the whole lot accented by a bunch of custom machined aluminium trim pieces by Hal Marshman. The pictures say a thousand words so we’ll leave it there, other than to say this wagon now gets the goods in style, its looks backed up with plenty of punch and a soundtrack to make the streets shake. CC © The door handles may have gone, but the distinctive aeroplane trims on the sides remain. We love the way they seem to emerge in full flight from the complex pressings in the body panels. Those cut outs in the sills for the sideexit exhausts are necessary due to a lack of ground clearance when the car is aired out.

Nothing doing Words and pics: Odgie Captions: DB It would have been the 14th Hot Rods & Hills (or even the 15th), but Covid put paid to that, just like it did last year. Falling, as it did, just before the proposed 21 June date for restrictions to be lifted, it would have been against the rules to organise a large event. However, this year the campsite was allowed to open, and people were able to book overnight stays. Along with those who held their bookings over, loads of us just happened to end up at Parkfoot Campsite in the Lake District on the same weekend in the middle of June. The ‘non’-event was the usual esoteric collection of all that’s wonderful about hot rodding, and Not Rods & Hills turned out to be just as eclectic and inclusive, welcoming and well supported as any genuinely organised event. You might have expected that though as, despite the original event being cancelled, hot rodders are a resourceful bunch. Some may possibly, perhaps have been in contact

The venue is always welcoming to ‘our’ types and, while they obviously couldn’t lay on any entertainment this year, nothing alters the picturesque lakeside scenery. Or the well-stocked shop and great facilities. Or the way the local businesses in nearby Pooley Bridge village stock up on everything from fresh produce to endless ice cream varieties. And some hot rodders even decided to go out for a drive to some local places of interest, all at the same time. Normal HR&H organiser, Craig Dixon, was conspicuous by his absence. Size matters Words and pics: Graham Thompson Captions: DB Classic Wheels, held at the Rutland Showground on the Sunday of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, was for many people the first event of any size for over a year. The weather proffered glorious sunshine and blue skies which, after weeks of rain, provided the ideal opportunity for people to finally get out and about in their vehicle of choice. Judging by the turn out and the queues to enter the site, many grasped that opportunity with both hands. The full to capacity show field contained vehicles of all sorts, from motorbikes to trucks, vintage to classics and Americans to hot rods. With numerous club displays, vendor stands and live music from The Houndogs throughout the day, there was plenty to keep people entertained.
for many people the first event of any size for over a year We keep hearing about the ‘new normality’ following relaxation of some Covid restrictions but, for Classic Wheels, the only visible signs were people social distancing and wearing face coverings where required. Oh, and there were long queues for the toilets, thanks to the one at a time policy. No complaints though, it was a brilliant day and a great opportunity to catch up with people you hadn’t seen for a long time. CC

Think Big part 1
The T-bucket revival is happening. So when long-time contributor, Bo Bertilsson, told us he was building a replica of the famous Monogram Big-T from 1961, we wanted to share it with you ■ Words and pics: Bo Bertilsson
° The starting point for our full-size replica was an original Monogram Big-T kit. The plastic model kit has been re-released several times over the years but mint, boxed first releases are very sought after by collectors these days. 15 years ago, you could have bought one for about $100, expect to pay more than that today.
t was while visiting Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum in Afton, Oklahoma, that I had the idea to build a fullsize replica of the Big-T. I went straight home and found an original scale model kit for sale on eBay, which brought back memories of 1963 when I first built the model as a kid, shortly after it was introduced in Sweden. Starbird built the original car in 1961 for plastic model company, Monogram, who used it as a PR show car prior to the release of the 1/8th scale (17in / 40cm in length) Big-T model. That was a huge model kit at a time when most hot rod kit releases were 1/24th scale, and the price reflected that.
I
I wanted one bad, and vividly remember the excitement of opening the box for the first time and studying all the detail in the kit. It was the closest a young kid could come to building a real hot rod, and led to a series of ‘Big’ kits, including Big-Rod, Big-drag and Big-Tub. © This October 1962 issue of CAR CRAFT was just one of the magazines that featured the Monogram Big-T. Oddly, though perhaps to emphasise its size, the cover car was the model kit, not the real car, but with real people superimposed onto the picture. That was a lot of work in pre-Photoshop days.
© As stated in this magazine advert from 1962, the Big-T kit was very detailed, with working steering, real rubber tyres and an incredible 97 chrome plated plastic pieces. It also came with additional parts to build a detailed show car diorama. Monogram even sold a motor kit separately so you could motorise the model if you wanted to.

u Here’s Darryl Starbird with the original car he built as a promo vehicle for Monogram, prior to the release of the kit. He admits to taking inspiration from Norm Grabowski’s Kookie Car, and Tommy Ivo’s Nailhead T, and the influences are clear to see. Note the color is not right in this picture, the car was painted a much brighter Porsche 356 Ruby Red. This car was given away in a competition in 1963 and has never been seen since.

° The starting point was a new pair of boxed Model A-style frame rails from Total Cost Involved (TCI), which saved a lot of time straightening and welding up original parts.
Incidentally, a very similar but less detailed Little-T version was later produced, in regular 1/24th scale, Monogram perhaps acknowledging that the Big-T was a little pricey for many pockets. The model was a big success, and today is credited with helping start the T-bucket trend, along with the contemporary Kookie Car of Norm Grabowski and Tommy Ivo’s Nailhead-powered T, which the latter admits was essentially a copy of

was won by someone in Los Angeles, but never to be seen again. Although plenty of model kits exist, there are surprisingly few pictures of the real car, which Starbird recalls was built in just a few weeks.
Original thinking My idea for building a Big-T replica was to make it as close to the original as possible, using genuine Ford parts wherever possible, and a steel body and pick-up bed. During the build up, I was in regular contact with Starbird about details but,
It was the closest a young kid could come to building a real hot rod ° The front crossmember is 2½-inch diameter, thick-wall tubing with the suicide-style spring bracket attached at a four-degree angle to keep the spring flat when the chassis is at ride height.
Grabowski’s build. Likewise, Starbird used Grabowski’s and Ivo's cars as inspiration for the Big-T. The bad news was that Monogram gave the original car away in a lottery in ’63. It
unsurprisingly, it was not that easy for him to remember what they did 60 years ago. I decided to use the model kit for some initial measurements, so took the one I’d bought apart.

However, it quickly became apparent that Monogram had used a bit of artistic licence to make the model look better, so in the end I had to check all my measurements against the real parts I was using to confirm dimensions. Like the cars it was inspired by, the Big-T chassis was based on Model A frame rails, kicked up in the rear, with a Model A rear spring mounted over the axle and a tube
° To find four tie rods for a 1935-’40 Ford is not that easy, so we used new 22mm, 3mm wall tubing tapped for 11/16-inch UNF left and right-hand threads for Ford-style tie rod ends. To attach these to the tube front axle, brackets were made with the correct, seven-degree taper holes and tacked on the front axle.

While we waited for it to turn up, we started planning and sourcing parts for the front suspension. The Big-T, and both the Grabowski and Ivo Ts used four 1935’40 steering tie rods for the 4-link, but it was decided instead to use new, thick wall 22mm tubing, and then tap the ends for 22m early Ford tie rod ends. ear These were done by the time the chassis turned up, so we could immediately start tur hanging the front suspension. A ’37 Ford han axle had already been bought from our axl friend ‘Von Franco’ Constanza, who built fri two perfect replicas of Norm Grabowski’s Kookie Car years ago, and fortunately I Koo had shot both Ivo’s car and Von Franco’s for magazine features in the past so had detail pictures of them for reference. det The rear end we chose is also from a ’37 Ford, installed with a Model A rear spring and spring hangers cut from a ’35-’40
front wishbone welded to the axle tubes. With everything tack welded, the basic chassis was rolling. Before we could work out the steering, we needed the engine and transmission mounted in the frame. As per the original car, we used an early small block Chevy and Ford three-speed transmission, so a swapmeet Offenhauser adapter made it possible to bolt the Chevy block to a ’39 Ford gearbox, while a Hurst front mount allowed us to mount the drivetrain in the frame, using the intake manifold to check the carbs will be sitting at the right angle. While Starbird couldn’t recall what steering box he used originally, from the pictures it looks like an F-1 Ford pick-up box, so that’s what we used, mounting it next to the transmission, pointing sharply down toward the floor in classic T-bucket style. That’s where we’ll leave it this month. CC
In part two next month, we start building the body for the Big-T…

Oliver picks up the story as to how he subsequently came to become the owner of the Model A in 2017. “I saw a video and some pics of the coupe at the Goodwood Revival, and just had to have it. Only when it was mine did we delve deeper into the car, quickly realising that a full nut and bolt rebuild would be the only way forward. “Things were just not up to scratch in my eyes, and there were a lot of issues, not least the engine being on its last legs.”
Oliver turned to Steve Jones, the man behind Old Bones Fabrication in Andover (www.oldbonesfabrications.co.uk). The ensuing discussions resulted in a simple vision of how the car would look. Well, it sounded simple enough at the time. The plan was to create a patinated coupe that pays homage to traditional hot rods built in the ’50s. Added to the mix, though, is the look that was first referred to as ‘beater’ in the December ’72 issue of ROD & Custom

a very rare thing to o say when you have been building a car for three years.” Favourite part of the build? I asked. “All of it! There are so many bespoke features I absolutely love, I couldn’t choose between them. But the headers are quite high up that list. “I would love to have gone over the roof chop and metal finish it to a high standard, but Oliver loved how crudely it wore the scars. It took me a while to come around to his view on that but, now it’s complete, it makes sense.”
Despite not having encountered the car for real yet, build style influences aside, I find it akin to Graeme Rust’s Alvis and Paul Bacon’s Automatron. With all these cars, the more times you re-visit them, the more details you pick up on. The saying the devil is in the detail could have been written about this car, but even then it could be doing the coupe an injustice. Sure, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and I can only imagine how noisy and draughty the ride must be with sections of open
It’s amazing how the rebuild has transformed the way the car drives flooring, but one thing is for sure, that hasn’t happened by accident. Everything on this car has been considered, discussed and executed with careful thought. The team at Old Bones have turned one man’s vision into reality, and the end result is just what Oliver wanted – reliable, tasteful and badass. CC © The boot lid hold-down straps were part of the original build, as were the Pontiac rear lights. Striping is a more recent addition by Dan at Paynes Pinstriping.
Thanks: HCA in Andover for powder coating, Dan at Paynes Pinstriping for lettering and striping, Chris at Retro Retrims for leather work, House of Logos for the brass-etched VIN plate, Kathryn Sanders for CAD design, Nick and Big Mike for stunning work on the wheels, Mick at the Hampshire Electroplating Co. in Southampton for plating and copper work, Saunders Motorworks in Southampton for engine internal work, Eric at Hot Heads Research and Racing for parts and endless knowledge, Jamie Reeves at Topspeed Automotive for parts, Input Joinery in Andover for woodwork, AMF Engineering in Andover for laser cutting, Tom Talbot for 3D printing, Jon Castell at CCT Upholstery in Southend for the leather seat trimming and, of course, the whole Old Bones Fabrication team past and present who helped on the build.

be eg Po op. Orr, So ome real shitte ers actuallyy, though they taught me how to work on cars. That’s how our age group learnt I think,” as John fondly recalls those days.
Motor-vation The big change occurred when he was 21 or so, and followed up an advert for a 350 Chevy engine, having blown the motor in the ’76 Pontiac Trans Am he had bought with the proceeds of his first house sale. The engine came in a ’69 Firebird ex-drag car. “The guy wanted £350 for the engine, or a grand for the whole car. It was a no brainer,” recalls John. The car itself was moved on again the

It was just the sound of that Eliminator car coming down the road toward the petrol station that did it for me The engine was then given to Paul Western to be checked over and rebuilt and, some 30-odd years later, it and the Muncie ’box that was behind it are still getting regular workouts in John’s ’32 coupe. John laughs when he recalls how many people have asked him if he built the
rod fire in John. “It was just the sound of that Eliminator car coming down the road toward the petrol station [in the Gimme All Your Lovin’ video] that did it for me. “I looked at the ’34 bodies that were available at the time, but for some reason they didn’t do a grille shell. People told me they were really hard to get hold of, so that’s why I went with a ’32 instead.”
High and dry We won’t go into too much detail, other than to say John was one of the many people left high and dry – to the tune of some 11 grand – by a less scrupulous owner of Rodline International around 2008. That nearly ruined the whole thing, and John went out and bought a Rover P5 “with dreams of being the next Winston Sewell,” he laughs. That turned out to be rotten though and so, a year or two later, © The Ford in this Ford started as a 302 short block, which John rebuilt himself. It now has an Edelbrock top end kit with E-Street ali heads and an AVS-series carb. Look closely and you might just see the removable panel in the firewall where the brake reservoirs, coil, auto’ dip stick and front petrol filter all live. But more importantly, have you spotted the toaster?
42 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2021
having at least repatriated his parts, if not his money, from Rodline, he was up for trying again. “It was owned by Rob Porter by then. I’d contacted him after losing it all and he said he’d do a deal if I ever wanted to give it another go. When I did, he honoured what he’d said.” So, with an engine, ’box, body, wheels and tyres, seats and a few other bits in stock, John went on the hunt for a chassis. “I wanted to build it all myself, but Geordie Paul at Duksville put me onto a guy called Alby in Liverpool who had a TCI chassis with independent front and rear for sale,, which wa as just what I wanted.”
All the trim is original Ford, restored and re-polished, including the bumpers. Chroming was done by Butterworths Plating in Ramsgate.
At the time, John only had a small, single-car garage at the front of his house, so his chassis jig was the sloping driveway in front. Slowly, but surely his vision for the coupe came together, with Wisbech

It’s not raw like the ’32, though, it’s more of a cruiser this one Engineering helping turn John’s CAD drawings into reality. “It was my mates, Mark Doughty-Keen and Tony Brightwell, that really kept me going. They’d come over to see how I was doing g, offe er advice,, encourag gement and
work by CMS Coachworks in East Sussex) and re-trimming the Fiat X1/9 seats that came free from a mate at work. “I’ll have a go at most things, but I haven’t got to the point where I’m willing to up pholster seats yet,,” sayys John.
¿ You’ve gotta love the view through a split rear window, even if visibility is compromised. Sumptuous red headliner was made by Eric and fitted by John, and notice how the trim detail in the rear seat cleverly echoes the split front seat.
After three years of spare time work, the coupe was first on the road in 2013, almost 30 years after John first saw that ZZ Top video, and John finally had what he’d wanted all those years. “It’s a proper hot rod in my eyes. It sounds great, it’s fast – proper fast – the manual ’box, just everything about it. It’s quite a raw thing, I love it, I really do.”
Size matters But being a coupe, it’s also quite small inside, not ideally suited to a family day out, or even just going down the pub with your mates. And so, after a few months of driving it, John had the itch to build something, dare we say it, more practical. Not instead, but to sit alongside the coupe.
Look beyond the rat shit, it's a really solid car He admits he wasn’t looking for a ’40 Ford sedan, but when John Reid offered him this one, with the inimitable sales line, “Look beyond the rat shit, it’s a really solid car, with all the trim.” He couldn’t very well turn it down, could he? Taken in by the idea of a Ford in a Ford, he had it shipped with a 1965 vintage 289 motor, plus a new front half floorpan n, firewall kit, Mustang II IFS and Air Lift air suspension.
° Eric Giddings at Trimmania in Berkshire stitched together the red faux python skin and caramel leather interior. The seats are the originals, and the dash is too, right down to the instrument cluster. A Moon rev counter sits centre stage, but it’ss that big ole’ late ’4 40’ss Pontiac Chieftain steering wheel that really grabs your attention. It sits on an Ididit column, with the addition of DC Electronics power steerring. The wipers are also now electrically op perated, using a modified Ford KA rear wiper motor.
A big thanks must go to Michele for giving John the space, support and encouragement to bring his projects to life.
The build(s) © If anyone tells you it’s easier working with a ’glass body, show them this picture. John really went to town on his steel inner structure. There’s a lot of work in this part of the job alone.
° Though John’s intention was to do everything on the ’32 himself, when a chassis came up for sale in just the configuration he was looking for, it made sense to start with that. Though obviously he then had to modify it.
° Meanwhile, in the garage the fully detailed chassis came together. That’s the same 350ci Chevy and Muncie four-speed that came out of the ’69 Firebird John bought when he was 21!
° We’d all like a bigger garage – some would probably settle for just having a garage – but this shot gives you an indication of the cramped working environment John built the coupe in. Barely room to swing a mouse in here.
° He wasn’t wrong about the rat shit inside it!
° Prior to building his new garage, John took the body off and got to work on modifying the chassis in his back garden.
° Th ld D l tt The old Deluxe was iin pretty good shape for an 80-year old car, but John bare metalled it to be sure and made good where necessary. One of his big things was getting the wheels centred in the ’arches, which they’re not from the factory on these cars. ¿ Other than what was required for suspension travel with the air ride, body mods are minimal, though John did have to do some major beefing of the inner wings for the new shock towers he added.
° And the steel framing continues into the doors. The sloping driveway outside his garage was John’s chassis jig when he was setting up the frame…
° …while his back garden was his paint booth. Okay, so this one received its top coats in a professional spray booth, but John did the prep and vinyl work on the underside himself, with help from Michele and his daughters, Beck and Jo, to turn the body onto its side.
° That all-important third pedal. Sure, not everyone these days wants a manual car, but you can’t beat the feeling of rowing through the gears in a hot rod.
The '40 as John Reid found it, waiting to be sh ipped to the UK .
° The original chassis was boxed, notched, fitted with new crossmembers and the back axle replaced with a Ford 9-inch located by a stainless 4-bar. © Leaping ahead here, the chassis is now painted and a long way into being built up. IFS is Mustang II-style, and that’s a Ford AOD ’box.
° …with the flames as well, it’s another tick on his bucket list. They took three weekends to work out and mask up.
° Ch Chassis all i modifications difi ti ll done, d John puts a bit of primer on and moves onto the bodywork.
°A i t their th i own Anyone th thatt paints car in their home garage gets maximum respect from us here at CC. John says it was a nerveracking part of the job but…
° Wiring isn’t John’s favourite job, but he used an American Autowire kit this time round and says it made all the difference.
°
The engine turned out to be too far gone, so was sold on and replaced with a 302, bought from his mate Bob Davis who, as well as helping with the chassis and engine paint on the sedan, has been a regular contributor to John’s projects over the years. “I don’t know why I bothered with the whole Ford engine thing really. Chevys are just so much easier to get bits for, and cheaper. You try and keep a lid on costs with all this stuff, don’t you? But it all becomes a load of bollocks because once you’ve started, you’ve just got to finish it. “I rebuilt the engine myself, and it was anything but cheap, but it’s turned out fine in the end. It’s not raw like the ’32, though, it’s more of a cruiser this one.”
to set the relationship between the two, still working on the driveway at the time. “I got fed up working in the rain in the end, so took some time out and built a garage in the back garden. That made all the difference.”
Wedding bells Then, in early 2017, a wedding was thrown into the mix. Not John’s, but his partner, Michele’s, son’s. “It wasn’t planned until September 2018, which seemed a long way off at the time, so I said, ‘No problem, it’ll be done.’ What a knob.” A few months further down the line, even with help from Mark, Tony – who’s unfortunately no longer with us – and Rob Wren, and regular parts deliveries from ° One of John’s goals in life was to paint and flame his own hot rod, and he’s now achieved it. You’ve probably noticed he’s got a bit of a thing for the chequered flag pattern, and it’s seen again here in the delicate flames, done using an airbrush in the same copper colour as the chassis. What you can’t see is the ’40 has the same under-body treatment as the ’32.
© With its yellow and black check, the interior of the ’32 is eye catching for sure. The seats are from a Fiat X1/9, trimmed by William Wallace, the dash is out of a ’52 DeSoto and houses Classic Instruments gauges and that one-off gear shifter, made to John’s design, is topped with a cast paperweight his old pal Tony picked up in a boot sale for a quid. Oh, and John’s mum stitched the headliner.

the likes of John Reid, Pete Whiteside, Tim Arnold and Richard Alder, it became apparent time was running out fast. “I said to Mich’ I’m going to have to do some nights and weekends to get this thing finished, and it did become a bit more of a chore then. It also meant I couldn’t build the whole thing and then blow it apart for paint, I had to do all that as I was going along.”
think I’d get away with painting the coupe in the garage at the front of the house, but this one was done at the end of the garden, a bit further away from the neighbours,” he says with a wry grin.
Air head Never having fitted air ride before, that threw some additional headaches into the mix, but John is nothing if not methodical.
It sounds great, it’s fast – proper fast – the manual ’box, just everything about it. It’s quite a raw thing, I love it But still John refused to call on professional help, even going as far as painting this one himself in single stage
John’s ’32 uses a Rodline four-inch chopped ’glass body and sits on an aftermarket chassis with a TCI custom IFS and Jaguar IRS with disc brakes on all four corners.
“I guess being a technical director in the building industry all my life, and being used to drawing things out, or speaking to
It was a hell of a lot of work to get it to sit that low, and you have to cut so much about to do that.” This time, the seats were re-trimmed by Eric at Trimmania, “Another great guy,” as John puts it. And with those bits installed, plus a headliner, but not much else inside, John and the groom made it to the church on time, albeit in a bit of a wallowy fashion and with only rear brakes.
I’ll have a go at most things, but I haven’t got to the point where I’m willing to upholster seats yet “I got all jittery a few days before that the rear air bags weren’t going to be up to four people in the car, so replaced them with some bigger ones, but it was terrible, it was like driving a bouncy castle.” Worse than that, a short while after the wedding one of the rear bags wore through, which brought John’s other fear about air ride – that of being stranded with the car stuck on the floor – to the fore.
The two cars offer a very different driving experience, and John smiles when he says the back axles really should be swapped between them, the 9-inch with LSD a better match to the four speed and lumpy 350 Chevy in the coupe. With 10.5:1 forged pistons, big valve heads and a cam of unknown origin, it’s what John describes as “just a real nice hot rod motor.”
° Wheels are Rocket Fires, in mach ined rather than as-cast finish. With the lug beh g nuts hidden hind centre caps, they are design ed to miimiic th he knock-off mag’ wheels used on roadsters. They only come in 16 early Indy x 5 and 18 x 6-inch sizes and John ’s used the 16s, with 195/65-16 and 205/60-16 Falken tyres.
“Luckily, it went flat in the garage, but it was a warning, so I’ve put the old bags back in and cut access holes under the back seat, should it ever happen again. “It runs and drives nice now. It’s not like the coupe. It’s more sedate, and it really needs better calipers to improve the brakes. In fact, that’s my next job on the coupe as well. Other than that, though, and one bit of trim I need to complete it, the sedan is done.” What would you say was the hardest part of the build(s)? I asked. “The ’
Even doing it yourself, there’s quite a lot of money in it and it seems to me it has the most potential for going wrong.” So, which one would you take out for a drive, just for the hell of it? After a short pause, John answers: “I haven’t driven the sedan a lot since finishing it, because of all that’s been going on, but it’s definitely more of a cruiser, especially with the big steering wheel. The coupe will always be the passion for me, that’s the one I’d pick just to go for a drive.” Oh, and the toaster? See if you can spot CC

guess it was predictable after all we’ve been through in the last year or so. It wasn’t just the gates that opened at Santa Pod on Friday 21 May, the heavens did, too. In fairness, the Pod’s first race meet of the season, the STP Springspeed Nationals, didn’t actually start until the Saturday. Friday was a Performance RWYB Test Day, not part of the meet itself, but it was still a disappointment that it was a rain off. This National Drag Racing Championship event offered 14 classes of car racing, from Outlaw Flat Four to Nostalgia Funny Car and Wild Bunch to Pro Mod. For those preferring fewer
I
This National Drag Racing Championship event offered 14 classes of car racing wheels, the meeting also included 10 bike classes, so it was fair to say it was a packed event card. Away from the track, there were traders, licensed bars, caterers and camping, with admission by pre-booked ticket only and no option for paying on the gate. After Friday’s wash out, and a determined effort by the track crew on Saturday morning, racing began in earnest just before noon, only for rain to stop play again around 4pm. Thankfully, Sunday dawned brighter and racing got underway
on time, with the only real stoppage being a minute’s silence for the late Dave Rowlands, prior to the early afternoon Wild Bunch qualifying session. This being England in May, though, no sooner had three Pro ET elimination pairings run mid-afternoon than the rain returned, hard enough for the meeting to be called early. Okay, it wasn’t quite the same as pre-Covid days, but the whole event was a definite step in the right direction, and thanks go to all concerned for making it happen. CC
Modurstang Pro ET s things turned out, this was the only class to enjoy any elimination runs, and even they were limited to just three pairings, thanks to the rain. New competitors in the class were Marc Huxley, Alfie Wratten and Simon Gough, along with rookie, Alan Schofield. Brett Featherstone’s Nova was wearing fresh paint, and Lee Huxley was driving a new-to-him Nova.
Amy Watkins came out top in qualifying, closely followed by Thomas Watkins and Bob Molden. The limited elimination runs saw Victor Parsons (10.28 index) run a 10.362 / 127 to overcome Jon Giles, Jon Turner lost out to the 10.317 / 131.27 from William Clark (9.80 index), whilst Dave Fulton (9.10 index) ran through with a 9.165 / 146.74 as Geoff Cowley alongside fouled.

Harry Redshaw (7.90 index) was second with the 9.023 / 71.80 he carded in the first round, then came Luke Mugridge (7.90 index), an 8.778 / 74.66 moving him up from number 24, and Freddie Taylor (7.90 index) on 9.411 / 69.94. Simon Fulton was initially in top spot on 9.880 / 144.32 but, when he couldn’t improve on that, David Fulton took over with a 9.921 / 144.89. Andy Dibley was in third spot after the first round with a 10.016 / 143.38, but couldn’t hold on as Tim Adam knock ked him off that perch with a 9.881 / 144.77.

Kev Slyfield improved from a lifted 8.065 / 111.24 to a 6.614 / 224.49 to qualify in top spot. Despite his Corvette wandering a bit on his second run, John Tebenham was next with a 6.922 / 209.84. Trying out a new Rossler TH400-based auto’ instead of the manual Lenco fitted Nick Davies

X factor ■ Words: DB Pics: Colin Ayres
e first introduced you to Colin Ayres’ latest project in the April issue and, since then, progress has come on in leaps and bounds. Back then we were somewhat cagey as to precisely what the base vehicle is, and
W
p r Colin explains: “This project has been in h b i my head for the last 30 years. I bought the same base vehicle 20 years ago just after I got my truck on the road, but never got round to building it and so sold it on. However, my dream is now coming true.
This project has been in my head for the last 30 years we’re not about to spoil the air of mystery now. So, to keep things simple, and a little mysterious, we’ll refer to it as Project X. We left you last time with the first stages of the two-door coupe conversion completed, but that was just the start, as
“I booked the car in with Ray and Connor at Rayvern Hydraulics in Guyhirn, Cambridgeshire for the air suspension fitment over a year ago. They’ve made several visits to me since to see how I was progressing, and we ultimately set a
d t for f them th tto start t t th h i work. k I date the chassis supplied the engine and transmission, rear axle and IFS and they told me it would take six weeks. Running my own business, I know all too well that very involved jobs invariably run over time wise. “Not so with Ray and Connor though. Six weeks later, the chassis was ready to collect. Brilliant! I couldn’t believe it, what a great pair of guys. Their work has saved me around a year of nights and weekends to get to that stage, so big thanks to them both. “Next on the list is to finish the modifications to the roof and move on to the doors. Only the two now though, so that should make things easier.” CC © The 60-year-old chassis has no structural rust, and is more than man enough for the job, so no additional strengthening was required. However, the plan for the car to lay frame…
° With the chassis stripped and braced at the front, the first job was to install the Mustang II-based IFS crossmember, which was modified to suit the width of the rails.
° As the car is going to sit very low, the chassis was notched for steering rack and lower A-arm clearance. The front suspension will feature large convoluted Firestone air bags.
° …dictated it required modification at the rear, too. Some large step notch chassis sections were laser cut and welded over the original frame to provide the necessary axle clearance.
° Then the unwanted parts of the original chassis were cut out and the notches boxed in. Twin tubular crossmembers were then added to provide upper air bag and shock location.
56 CUSTOM CAR AUGUST 2021
° The stock rear chassis rail sections have been dropped in order to retain the factory boot floor and spare wheel well.
° Colin wanted the body channelled too, and with the original chassis being so deep, Ray and Connor were able to section the centre section of the rails by 40mm, incorporating internal box section reinforcing and new body mounts.
° Rear axle is a 10-bolt Chevy. The original bracketry was ground off and new 4-bar and air bag mounts welded to the casing.
° An off-the-shelf 4-bar kit was utilised and the installation completed with a Panhard rod mounted on fabricated brackets.
° Engine is a 1993-vintage, fuel injected, 6,750cc, Rolls-Royce V8. It sits on custom engine mounts raised to protect the sump. Due to the ground-scraping stance, the steering rack will use a rose jointed flip kit.
° With the body back on the chassis, the need for the rear kick-up is clearly apparent. As is how neatly the modified sections integrate with the original parts. Air bags are tapered Firestone F9000s.
° The laid back front ’screen is now finished…
° …and, with filler metal added to the rear side sections of the roof, the transformation to a two-door pillarless coupe is getting closer.
© The urethanebushed rear mount for the GM 4L80E automatic transmission part-way through construction.
° Whilst the chassis was being sorted at Rayvern, work had been continuing on the body.
° The roofline now stands just 50 inches off the ground. Handy for when the time comes for Colin to wash and polish the car.
° Back home at Stilton, and parked alongsi de a stock one, the full extent of the transformation can really ally be b seen.

PART FOUR: With the inlet manifold dramas sorted, it was now time to renew the cambelt, water pump and belt tensioners. Andrew Everett runs us through this job and finds it tricky but fairly straightforward.
A
fter a fight to the death over the last two episodes with the inlet manifold to rid ourselves of the dreaded swirl flaps, we hoped the cambelt replacement would be a bit easier – and to some extent it was, although I tackled this job hot on the heels of the manifold saga. With the airbox out and cambelt cover off, it made sense to plough-on and get it done. In most respects the Saab, Fiat and GM 1.9 and 2.0 diesel belt is a fairly simple one. Cambelt cover off, offside engine mounting out, auxiliary belt off and finally the lower alloy cover to expose everything. Even then they make it tricky – the lower belt cover will not come off unless the auxiliary belt tensioner is fully retracted and locked in place with a suitable pin. I used a small Allen key. I used a big pair of gas pliers to twist the tensioner clockwise and you don’t want your fingers anywhere near this thing!
CM project 2008 Saab 9-3 Sportwagon 1.9 TTiD
TTiD
New cambelt & water pump Do NOT try to do this job without a locking toolkit. They are less than £30 and essential. Also, whilst you must fit the belt with the direction arrows pointing forwards (so running clockwise), don’t get too hung-up on getting the white lines on some belts lined-up with the timing marks – it really doesn’t matter. Our new belt didn’t have them, some do. Always ensure the cam and crank pulleys are in position before slipping the old belt off.
Hints and tips As ever, patience is the key and a few tips you won’t find in the manuals. A trick I learned years ago was to press a bit of paper towel or similar into the gap between the cambelt and the lower timing cover when fitted to the crank sprocket – this presses the belt into the sprocket teeth and keeps it in position whilst you feed the belt around the rest of the

sprockets. It took me at least three goes to get the belt timing correct – the diesel pump isn’t ‘timed’ and can go on any way. All-in-all not a horrendous job, yet slightly frustrating… And the 13mm bolt and captive nut for the belt tensioner really doesn’t look like it’s up to the job – you can tell they were short of money when they designed that. Be aware that there are few belt run diagrams for the timing belt or the auxiliary belt so take plenty of photos and draw a detailed belt run diagram for each.

lfa’s pocket rocket of the last decade and possibly the next has got to be the turbocharged 231-237bhp front-wheeldrive 1750cc Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde (Italian for green four-leaf, or the Cloverleaf brand), which pulls an impressive 221lb ft (almost 300Nm) of torque that results in a 0-60mph time of around six seconds. Under the steel
Rob says Alfa Romeo appears to have lived up to its reputation for making performance cars, especially with the 1750 turbocharged Giulietta, but if you intend to drive such a vehicle enthusiastically, keep on top of wheel alignment and suspension checks, fit the same brand and model of tyres all-round and be meticulous with maintenance. Corrosion doesn’t appear to be a major issue at present, but don’t ignore it if it emerges.
our car, the belt had already 8 On been replaced about 50,000 miles beforehand and was still in good order with no signs of wear of damage – no oil leaks either. You can see here the white timing belt alignment mark, but as we said, it’s nice to line them up but it’s not essential.

cam locking tools now need to be 9 The fitted. This engine has one of these Allen plugs fitted to each cam but most mechanics just seem to use the inlet one – this is because the cambelt only drives the inlet cam, the exhaust cam being driven off the inlet cam inside the engine itself.

2 TOP-UP SCREENWASH The screenwash reservoir’s filler neck is located on the nearside front corner of the engine bay, close to the top of the wing and headlight. Prise off the cap and top-up with a mixture of screenwash and water or pour a sachet of concentrated screenwash in and dilute it with tap water.
3 CHECK BATTERY Make sure the battery is secure along with its terminals – and check the terminals are clean. Measure the battery’s voltage or, if you have a battery tester, check its condition. There’s a fusebox next to the battery, so check inside to see if any fuses have blown or if there are traces of corrosion.

bodywork, there are MacPherson struts at the front with lower arms and an antiroll bar. At the rear, there’s another antiroll bar, along with trailing arms, single upper and lower arms and separate coil springs and dampers. The brakes consist of Brembo four-pots at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear. Most of the involved work appears to be straightforward, with the exception of a few filters (pollen, air and oil), which are a little more awkward than most vehicles. Some service components are not cheap. Take the 14mm long-reach spark plugs, which need changing every four years or
36,000 miles. They cost around £25 each and there are four of them. On the plus side, some service components don’t exist, such as the for-life in-tank fuel filter and a lack of power steering fluid because of electric power steering. We’ve looked at a 2016 model of the 1750cc Giulietta and listed the recommended servicing according to Alfa Romeo and Turin Motors. The 2010-2015 models have a different service schedule, which includes an oil and filter renewal every year (plus basic inspection), but a more major service every 18,000 miles or two years.

4 CHECK BRAKE FLUID The brake and clutch fluid reservoir is located along the engine bulkhead, close to the nearside inner wing. The fluid level can be checked by looking at the outside of the transparent reservoir (MIN and MAX markers). If necessary, top-up with DOT 4 brake fluid.
5 GREASE BONNET RELEASE Spray a light grease over the bonnet release mechanism on the top of the slam panel to help prevent it seizing. Open all four doors and the tailgate to apply more of this grease to the hinges, locks and check straps.
6 REMOVE ENGINE COVER The engine cover is clipped on to the top of the engine, so prise it off. Check that all breather, fuel and coolant hoses and pipes are secure with no signs of fluid leaks. Make sure the exhaust heat shield at the front of the engine bay is secure.

If the spark plugs are being replaced, start by removing the individual coil packs. Each one is secured with a 10mm bolt. Carefully prise out the coil pack. When refitting them, add a tiny drop of dielectric grease on to the top of the spark plug or inside the coil pack to achieve a good electrical contact and reduce the risk of corrosion.
