The brief was to produce a photography booklet of the project site in Richmond and of the buildings visited in Tenerife. Photographically mapping the site acted as a way to immerse myself in the creative universe of black and white photography. Improving my camera skills through workshops, allowing me to gain a deeper knowledge of the functionality of my camera. I went back to the basics of photography by shooting in black and white. Enabling me to experiment with; exposure, shutter speed and manual focus. Working with ‘raw’ files in order to have more control over the composition.
“
All material in nature, the mountains and the streams and the air and we, are made of Light which has been spent, and this crumpled mass called material casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light. So Light is really the source of all being.1

Exploring the effects both organic and non organic shadows have when they are cast onto various structures. The variation in lines that appear and how they alter the appearance of the objects they interact with.

Different textures and materials allow shadows to be cast in unique and interesting ways. By looking at objects from a different perspective the composition changes dramatically, the use of shadow allows objects to appear more imposing than they are in reality.

Artificial and natural light was of particular interest when making this booklet and from the buildings visited how the two were used to compliment each other. Each had specific roles to play in creating varying atmospheres.

The movement from the grass below, is mirroring that of the ramp above as you descend. Circulation through ramps creates a cleaner movement through spaces and allows users to reach their destination gradually.

Here the same wall has been photographed from different angles. Highlighting the depth of the wall that may not be apparent at first glance. Exploring how tapestries can alter depending on where they are viewed from. The rugged nature of the wall in reality

Exploring the various textures that are present both in Richmond and in Tenerife. The stone wall that protrudes from the mortar where it is obvious what material is being views. This is contrasted in Tenerife by the impressions of the timber which are visible on the concrete.

Using derelict dwellings as the basis for the exploration of abandoned places. The doorway acting as the threshold inviting guests in is worn and in need of repair. The lock to the door is also damaged indicating that there is no home within.

Nature can also be an indicator when looking at abandoned spaces. Here the vegetation has begun to consume the dwelling, even breaching the windows.
