Community Connection

Nolli Plan

The Nolli Plan emphasises the directionality and continuous route through the site. Bridging the gap between the two areas of the town.

creating clear lines connecting the two areas of the town. The tower at the tip of the site acts as a focal point, drawing visitors through onto the site itself and the central core.

It quickly becomes apparent the intent of the form in

Existing car park

St Mary’s Church

The main access to the site is via the main market square. I felt that this area was lacking a dominant structure that can be seen from the market, as once you’re at the site you realise that there is more of the town to explore.

The site is split into three clearly defined levels with the lower two currently a car park, and the highest as a private space for residents of the apartments. The church is currently the only building puncturing the Richmond skyline in this part of town.

The Hepworth

Laban Dance Centre

The Hepworth by David Chipperfield was pivotal in the initial design. Roof lights washing walls with dramatic light was explored in depth and adapted for use in the sculpture gallery. Having natural light in the gallery interested me as it is usually artificial due to the nature of the objects on display. The Laban Dance Centre by Herzog and Demeuron was studied for its use of polycarbonate , creating a sense of movement within from the exterior, Creating a sense of intrigue as to what is going on beyond. Enticing people into the Institute. Polycarbonate lends itself to a seamless facade as the panels create one fluid movement, aiding the directionality of the tower. The TEA by Herzog and Demeuron. From a topographical viewpoint in connecting the city of Santa Cruz. The way in which the building is the vehicle for bringing the city together.

Light Study

The model is made from hessian and plaster. This unique mix of materials created some very interesting shadows when light was cast onto, helping my initial concept for the tower acting as a beacon.

The Botanical Gardens in Tenerife, although unfinished the only light that was present was natural, and so I was able to experience the drama of pitch black spaces contrasted with large spaces bathed in soft light.

Development Model

The initial exercise again began with massing of models at 1:500 in the site context. Producing four alternate approaches which derived from three key scenarios;

form acted as the catalyst for my entire project. To end the massing phase of the project I produced a 1:200 plaster model of my initial form, having gone through the first phase of development.

From this process the scheme which I chose to pursue further was then cast as one solid element. This initial

To help me understand the structure in greater detail I produced a 1:50 structural model, to examine the effects of polycarbonate and what the spaces would initially feel like.

Green space allows students to enjoy a semi-private space to learn and study.

The tower at specific moments allows views out of the whole of Richmond.

The new route through allows easier access for the students and community to gain access to the school.

The church can be seen from the top of the site, drawing visitors through the site onto more of Richmond.

Gallery perspective

Having this variance in lighting allows the opportunity for a whole range of exhibitions to take place.

The natural light enters through the openings, bathing the displays below. This is in contrast to the other gallery spaces present in my design which uses artificial light and darkness respectively.

The polished concrete floors offer sculptural reflection allowing the artwork to take on another form altogether.

Library perspective

Whilst studying the students are treated to views over Richmond looking towards the abbey, from the study space books can be taken onto the semi private outdoor spaces to relax and enjoy in peace.

The study space in the teaching centre is available to both students and to the children who attend the school opposite the site. This offers the opportunity to build a rapport with the community and allows further interaction with the residents.

Approaching the site the typography and sloping nature of the site are apparent.

This new public route through will ensure people are drawn through the space.

The typology of each structure creates the central space which is the pivot point.

Nolli Plan

The Nolli Plan depicts the location of the Sancturary on site and its relation to the market square and castle which loom over the site.

Once all the lines are stripped away, you begin to appreciate the hidden nature of the structure, hugging the lines of the buildings on site already.

Part of the site is inaccessible due to a gate however I was still able to gain all of the information I needed from the other vantage points.

The wall currently on site and house would both be re-purposed in my scheme as I felt the opportunity to reuse an existing building is something I hadn’t previously explored.

Wood of Nets

Exploring the myths and legends present in Richmond I wanted the Sanctuary to become a legend of its own, this brought about my research into buildings that appear as shadows, concealing what is there.

The technique of charring wood known as shou sugi ban, for its blackened qualities became the ideal material when attempting to emulate shadows.

8000 Word Dissertation Stadia Atmosphere Community

DISSERTATION 72

As part of the Stage 3 syllabus an 8000 word dissertation was required. This is the abstract, titled “The Decline in Atmosphere at British Football Stadiums Through looking at Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Manchester City, this dissertation explores the ways in which atmosphere inside stadiums has changed for these two clubs and the English game in general and further abroad (Germany). The dissertation argues that there has been a decline in British stadium atmosphere as a result of shifting fan culture, the loss of community values and identity of the clubs. The dissertation also investigates how we can recapture the topophilia of stadia of the past, which would be packed to the rafters and a wall of noise produced from the local fans standing as a collective. Finally I will explore what measures are in place to improve the atmosphere at current all-seater stadia in England. Fans of Newcastle United completed a questionnaire exploring; fan culture, squad, ownership and their thoughts on atmosphere inside St James Park. The results of the questionnaires revealed that there has been a perceived decline in atmosphere. This dissertation provides a greater insight on how atmosphere inside stadiums has changed, with direct quotes from fans first hand perspective. BIM Model

A major task during my time in practice has been to produce a BIM Model for parts of the Manchester Royal Infirmary. This required me to coordinate drawing packages, consult relevant documentation and standards and learn about the necessary fire

compartmentation when producing a fire strategy. The project has grown in scope and complexity and has allowed me to explore many of the features Revit has to offer.
