For those who like to be out and about, the National Trust (page 42) are pulling out all the stops. With adventures galore, there is fun to be had for the whole family across a variety of stunning locations. Our photographer has also been out, capturing some fabulous images which can be seen on our cover and on page 16. As ever, Roger Clegg has complimented his photography with an equally brilliant column (page 45), “Trainspotting”.

Our regular columnists are, once again, sprinkled throughout the pages of this edition with Belinda Ambrose (page 49) encouraging readers that ‘Nature’s Way’ is often best. Stirring up another batch of loveliness, we have Eliza Pepperpot on page 57 whilst Joanne Major serves us a slice of The Autumn Years (page 61). Meanwhile, Lisa can be found on page 22 sharing some more of her light and bright musings.

Kick starting the season in style, we are delighted to announce the Hexham Abbey Festival (page 54) which begins on Friday 20th September. Featuring a wealth of creative talent, it promises to be a spectacular event with something for everyone to enjoy. Keeping in with our musical theme, we are pleased to feature the Ryton and Prudhoe Brass Band on page 37. With a busy and varied Autumn programme, the band are encouraging brass players from across the region to dust off their instruments and become part of the dynamic.

Somewhere over the rainbow Of all the sights and sounds of the Tyne Valley, one of my absolute favourites has to be the rainbow. Judy Garland famously sang about dreaming when seeing a rainbow, how happy the bluebirds were who could fly over the beautiful rainbow and how she desired to fulfil the same potential. From where I live, I have the privilege of being able to look right out across the Valley and more often than not, it plays host to some of the most spectacular rainbows I have ever seen. It never fails to amaze me how the seven vibrant colours come together in a perfect arc, proudly displayed for all to see and enjoy.

All change at Ryton Community Library Did you know that Ryton now has its very own Community Library? It’s run for the Council by local volunteers and has a growing number of members who appreciate having a really local library on their doorstep. But we want lots more. The library is conveniently close to Ryton’s shops and post office, tucked in below the Methodist Church just off the Main Road.

Ryton Hotel

It may be small, but it has everything you’d expect from a public library – low cost internet access, newspapers, local information and, of course, books! There’s a great children’s selection, with picture books piled high in the library’s own book basket. The entrance courtyard, with its pretty flowers and cheerful blue benches, is a peaceful haven to enjoy during library opening hours. On Mondays at 2.00 p.m. from 2nd September, volunteers will be running Rhyme Time for under 5s in the church hall above. These friendly relaxed sessions last around an hour. They include rhymes, songs and stories for wee ones and time for a snack and chat, with a small charge to cover costs. The grown ups enjoy it as much as the children! Volunteers will also be hosting a monthly reading group. You can find out about both these activities by calling in at the library or phoning 0191 413 1890 during opening hours.

Our current opening times are: Monday

9.00- 5.30

Thursday 9.00-1.30 Saturday 9.00-1.00 Every new member and book borrowed means we have a better chance of keeping this great facility in our village. So please join Ryton Library right now. Membership is free, with a small optional annual charge for internet access.

Prudhoe

Prudhoe Youth Charity Shop Youth Work has always played a valuable part in the life of communities across the UK. This is especially true in Prudhoe, where many young people have been positively impacted by the outstanding work of the local Youth Service. The Prudhoe Youth Charity Shop has played a major role in supporting this work for almost 20 years and hopes to continue to do so for many years to come. The vision for the Prudhoe Youth Charity Shop was established back in 1996, when proposed cuts to the Youth Service were announced. With a heart to serve the local community, the Charity Shop generates income which goes directly towards supporting Youth Work and related projects in the Prudhoe area. The Shop itself is run by a wonderful team of enthusiastic volunteers. Open Monday to Saturday, the team do a brilliant job of monitoring donations coming in, serving the customers and many other aspects of shop work. In recent years, students completing their Duke of Edinburgh awards have done their community placement with the Charity Shop and found the experience very rewarding. In addition to supporting the Youth Service, the Charity Shop is keen to support those who are unemployed by offering opportunities to gain experience across a variety of areas of work. There is always an opportunity for new people to get involved in the Charity Shop. No matter your age or experience, you will be warmly welcomed on board the team. The Charity Shop thrives on donations of all kinds. From furniture to clothing, household goods and toys, saleable items are very gratefully received. A free collection service is also available for households across the Tyne Valley. Whether it is a house clearance or just larger items that require a van, we can help you. Due to the volume of furniture received, the Charity Shop is looking for people who are able to restore and refurbish items such as chairs, tables and the like. If you think you could help, the Shop would love to connect with you. All monies raised following donations to the Charity Shop are specifically for the local Youth Service in Prudhoe so by supporting the Shop, you are investing in the local community. If you would like to know more about the Prudhoe Youth Charity Shop, how to donate or to get involved in volunteering, please get in touch by calling George McCreedy or Ian Lowry on 01661 831432

Ryton & Prudhoe Brass Band With an action packed schedule for the Autumn/Winter season, the Ryton and Prudhoe Brass Band are on the hunt for new players to join their ranks. Playing purely for pleasure, the band delight in performing locally for many causes and events, as well as joint events with other local music organisations for the benefit of the whole community. Formed in 1987 as a youth band by the Reverend Harold Wilkinson of Crawcrook Methodist Church, the band has gone from strength to strength, incorporating members from across the Tyne Valley including several from the Dunston Silver Band. The connection with the Dunston Silver Band remains strong as the bands continue to partner forconcerts during the year. Since relocating to a base at Prudhoe Methodist Church, the Ryton and Prudhoe Brass Band has struck up a connection with many of the local bands and choirs in the area. Most notably, the band has developed a close relationship with the Prudhoe Gleemen Male Voice choir with shared concerts happening regularly. Oftentimes, the proceeds from these concerts have gone towards the work of local charities such as “Josie’s Dragonfly Trust” and those further afield including “Help for Heroes” and the RNLI. These concerts are very well attended by local audiences. Other concert engagements include Albermarle Barracks, where the band accompanied the carols for the annual Battalion Carol Service and also at Tynedale Hospice at Home event “Light up a Life”. In addition to this, we have a variety of summer engagements, playing at both indoor and outdoor concert events. Ray Hutchinson, a long serving member of the band says, “The band is great for players of all ages and abilities. Whether you are an experienced player or have an instrument hidden away in a cupboard that you would like to dust off and get back into the swing of playing, this is the brass band for you.” Promoting a relaxing and friendly atmosphere, the band offers a perfect environment for players to grow in confidence, technical ability and experience a wide variety of concerts. If you would like to join the band, you’d be most welcome. Rehearsals take place during term time on Thursday evenings at Prudhoe Methodist Church, 6.30pm until 8.30pm. For further information, please contact Ray Hutchinson on 0191 4144883 or Neville Fairbairn on 01661 832162. We’d be delighted to have you on board!

Masterly Print Show International Masters lead this print show: David Hockney, JMW Turner and Salvador Dali. There are fantastic suites from ‘Godfather of Pop Art’ and creator of the ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts’ Club Band’ album cover, Peter Blake, and woodcuts from iconic Billy Childish. Alongside the prints are stunning contemporary originals from Spaniard Vicente Esparza in his first UK show, and Yorkshire’s Sally Gatie.

David Hockney and Dali Vicente Esparza, ‘Fauna Humana’, Oil on Canvas

David Hockney, RA, is one of the UK’s best-known living artists. The signed ‘Pleading for the Child’ is a fine Hockney print, inspired by Grimms’ fairytale, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’. The inspirational Salvador Dali, leader of the Surrealist movement, was renowned for his innovative prints and we have a signed print in the show.

International Originals Vicente Esparza’s is the latest international artist to show for the first time in the gallery. The Spanish artist’s ‘Fauna Humana’ or ‘Human Wildlife’ originals feature urban crowds of people and a single animal face. They focus attention on animal aspects of humans and human aspects of animals. The quality of painting ensures they complement the Master printmakers’ work.

David Hockney Etching, ‘Pleading for the Child’, Signed

JMW Turner Around 1824-25, Turner agreed with publisher Charles Heath to produce an ambitious series of drawings and watercolours, after which engravings were made. We have sourced four of these rare engravings, featuring Prudhoe and Barnard Castles, Knaresborough and Richmond. 2011 Turner Prizeshortlisted George Shaw also has work showing.

Sally Gatie’s figures lie cradled within a sea of fabric. At first glance, the figures look peaceful, but the paintings are energetic and animated. Sally’s paintings are a colourful addition to the show, which runs until the 7th of September. Sally Gatie, ‘Rose Petals,’ Oil on Canvas

‘Picturesque Views in England and Wales,’ Prudhoe Castle, JMW Turner, c1838, Engraving

Billy Childish

‘Sergeant Pepper’ Artist, Peter Blake Creator of the famed ‘Sergeant Pepper...’ sleeve, Peter Blake has produced a portfolio of 10 limited edition prints, to celebrate 30 years of the Great North Run in ‘Running Suite’. The suite features images of the run: cigarette cards, vintage photographs of runners, posters and more. Peter Blake’s mother was born in South Shields, where the race ends.

Original artworks by artists such as Billy Childish may be priced as highly as £50 000. Childish’s prints are affordable reproductions from his sellout international exhibitions, whilst woodcuts are original works of art. Billy Childish is, famously, the name of the Billy Childish Woodcut, ‘Mermaid’ man inside Tracey Emin’s tent, but he is much more in addition - a cult figure in America, Japan and Europe. It is almost unique to see such a range of Childish’s work as this in the North East. This is an ideal way to build a collection.

‘Back to School’ Posture Screening

Posture Screening Program for all school age children - free of charge & no obligation

New research is to be carried out at selected schools in the UK by the United Chiropractic Association (UCA) later in the year, amid fears that young Children are being literally weighed down by their school bags. There is concern that in many cases, children hildren are carrying much more than the recommended maximum sture and of 10% of their body weight, leading to posture potentially spinal problems. ing that sort Chiropractor Belinda Ambrose says: “Carrying of weight every day can certainly affect children’s f re. futu posture and set off issues that may develop in the future. om the age Children can start to experience back pain from lik liho d of 11-15 and if it starts then, there is a greater likelihood of it continuing into adulthood. Often, they and their parents don’t take back pain seriously because it comes and goes. But I see people in their early 20s who tell me that their spinal problems started when they were teenagers.” Previous international studies suggest that as many as 80% of children believe their backpacks are too heavy and almost half of children feel their backpack is causing them back ache.

If you would like your child’s posture assessed, and to receive tips from our UCA Chiropractor on how to minimise the load, call us now on 01434 605688 to reserve your child’s posture screening time.

New service for people with dementia launching in Hexham Experienced gardeners are wanted by Alzheimer’s Society to launch a new project aimed at people with dementia and their carers in Tynedale. Charity staff are appealing for anyone with allotment expertise or are confident gardeners to help get their new community gardening group off the ground. Alzheimer’s Society’s locality development officer for Northumberland, Amy Syron-Mallenby is organising the new project. She said: ‘We are really keen to give people with dementia and their carers the chance to enjoy their Northumbrian surroundings through light gardening projects and related activities in the Hexham area but we need help from experienced gardeners to get our projects up and running. Gardening is an enjoyable, therapeutic and healthy pastime. The group aims to help to maintain the skills of those who have enjoyed gardening in the past but we also welcome new comers to the activity interested in developing new skills’

‘We’re blessed with some of the finest countryside in Tynedale and so community gardening groups would be a brilliant way for people with dementia and their carers to have a bit of fun and also to grow their own produce and ensure we make the most of what I am certain will be a terrific outdoor adventure.’ Some 85 per cent of people with dementia say they struggle with isolation, loneliness and depression. The activity group provides a social atmosphere that aims to help people with dementia keep physically and mentally active as well as helping people express themselves.

Dilston Psychic Garden and the No28 Regeneration Project in East Hexham are keen to support the project and Amy hopes to attract people with dementia who do not necessarily have a background in gardening but are keen to take it up. She added:

Amy continued: ‘There are 4,556 living in Northumberland and this will rise to 4,740 in 2015 but with the right support people can live well with the condition for a number of years. Activity groups can make a huge difference to people’s sense of wellbeing. The community gardening group will enable people with dementia to meet other people in a similar situation whilst also having fun and trying out new things. ‘

‘The overall aim of the group is to offer an activity that offers health benefits as well as a chance to enjoy the outdoors whilst socialising with people who understand and are supportive of each other.

If interested in becoming a volunteer or would like information contact Amy Anderson on 0191 274 2727 or volsnorthumberland@ alzheimers.org.uk

Trainspotting The railways hold a fascination for me. I am still in awe of the harnessed power and spectacle of steam - a left over from my train spotting days as a young lad. It is no longer an obsession and my encounters with the world of railways are fairly infrequent but still most enjoyable. Twice recently I have been to rail preservation locations. The first was the Bluebell Line in Sussex where my wife and I took my grandson. The second was to the delightful and wonderfully scenic South Tynedale Railway based in Alston – this was just to enjoy photographing the line and the engines and as an enjoyable relaxation to while away a few hours on a pleasant summer day. The visit to the Bluebell Line necessitated a range of pictures to show my son and his wife what we did and saw during the day and then to add them to their family digital album. So my pictures had to represent the day. The pictures needed to show what we did and what we saw. It needed to show how massive the engines were, what it was like on the train and what we saw from the carriage window. Some of the pictures accompany this column. My approach to photographing the South Tynedale Railway was entirely different. Here I wanted to describe the railway in pictures. I obviously wanted to show the engines, but the South Tynedale Railway is, as the name tells you, a railway preservation society. So I also wanted to show the station, people waiting for the incoming train, the train in the station, the train passing the signal box and the train in the glorious quintessential North Pennine dale that is South Tynedale with its magnificent river. These

were added to previous pictures including the railway in the snow. Some of pictures of the South Tynedale Railway are featured in the double page feature. Photographs are your memories in a very tangible and vivid form and can really help you relive the occasion. I find that with any event or special day out it is worth thinking in advance where I am going, what I am likely to encounter, and how I am likely to want to photograph it to best effect. Of course this does not rule out taking advantage of impulse and the unexpected. The South Tynedale Railway and Alston makes a very good day out but check the timetable at www.south-tynedale-railway.org.uk . There is a full weekend program for September, October and into November. Don’t forget the FREE Photography Day at the Roman Site in Corbridge on 17th September - it is not too late to register. If you are interested contact Alex McCroskie at The Hadrian’s Wall Trust on 01434 609700. Enjoy your autumn photography.

Breast milk....... Never been recalled! Consider the experiment where scientists tried to replicate sea water. They were able to duplicate all the components in sea water and in every respect the engineered sea water was identical to the real thing, only when they introduced fish to the new ‘sea water’, they all died. Clearly something was missing in the man- made attempt to copy nature and where nature is conducive to life, the artificial copy was not. Consider then, applying the same principles (to some extent) with breast milk, which is why both the NHS and World Health Organisation recommend you exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first six months. Only breast milk can provide all the necessary nutrients in just the right amounts to completely nourish your child without any need for supplementation. Breast milk and the act of breast feeding has a positive effect on a baby’s heath that cannot be duplicated by formula milk and bottle feeding, in spite of plenty of skilled marketing and endless research in creating a substitute to breast milk. The benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition. Breast milk is also biologically active whereas formula milk is biologically inert. In addition to containing all the vitamins and nutrients your baby needs in the first six months of life, breast milk is packed with disease-fighting substances that protect your baby from illness. A recent study from Brown University found evidence that breastfeeding is good for babies’ brains and that breastfeeding alone produced better brain development than a combination of breastfeeding and formula. But, just because breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t mean that it comes naturally. Modern birthing procedures, even those with seemingly minimal intervention, are known to cause trauma and stress to the infant’s spine and nerve function which may influence the ability of the babies to suckle. The significance of birth trauma is often underestimated; and the resulting symptoms are frequently misinterpreted. Breast-feeding has a complex functional mechanism. The entire neuromusculoskeletal system, jaw, neck, cranium, and nervous system, must function properly and work in harmony for optimal breast-feeding. Studies have found that gentle Chiropractic adjustments can improve an infant’s ability to suckle efficiently and breastfeed more easily.

Some mothers find it really difficult to breastfeed for various other reasons. Some of those might be because of anatomical problems such as having inverted nipples or the baby may suffer with tongue – tie, a commonly overlooked problem in infants which can be corrected. Both problems create difficulty with the baby’s attempts at attachment to the breast causing frustration and discomfort to both mother and infant. Breast implants or surgical damage to breast may have injured the milk ducts making breastfeeding difficult or simply impossible. A lack of post-natal support particularly in busy hospitals can often sabotage the new mothers attempts at breastfeeding and if this is the case don’t give up and resort to bottle feeding and formula, ask your health visitor for advice. If you are finding it particularly difficult to get breastfeeding established ask to be referred to a lactation consultant. Other reasons women give up with breastfeeding is that they feel they are not supplying enough milk for their infant. If the infants delivery was uncomplicated and did not require intervention, physiologically there is no reason that your body cannot produce enough milk providing you are feeding on demand and you are drinking enough water. Bear in mind, breast size has nothing to do with how much milk you can make! The hungrier your baby, the more you will need to feed her. If your baby’s birth involved intervention such as an artificially induced labour or you had drugs to ‘speeds things along’, for pain relief, or to shorten the time to deliver the placenta, this can affect the physiological production of milk so it might take longer to get breastfeeding established, but with the right support and perseverance even this can be overcome. There are a number of women who simply choose not to breastfeed for a variety of reasons, some because of the logistics of juggling an early return to work with expressing milk, however I have to say for the most part it is doable and your infant can certainly be breastfed outside working hours even if bottle fed during the day. Others reasons not to breastfeed range from personal vanity (sagging breasts) or ‘ownership’ of said breasts by a woman’s partner to psychological reasons to ‘my doctor says my baby’s allergic to breast milk.’

In the end, some reasons not to breastfeed are simply not enough to justify denying your baby the perfect nutrition, and as far as allergies to breast milk, this is commonly due to what the mother is eating. Whatever the mother eats will be passed through to the milk. Common culprits are cow’s milk and gluten which can upset a baby’s immature digestive tract. So, mum, look at your diet first before switching to formula! In some instances though, a digestive tract damaged by early introduction of antibiotics either during labour or early in infancy can damage the fragile lining of the baby’s gut making them intolerant of protein of any kind including that found in breast milk, so supplementing with the right probiotic to help heal the gut, and in severe circumstances using a amino acid only formula such Neocate in the short term can make all the difference to successful breast feeding and a healthier baby long term. It is so important that mothers understand that there are ways to improve the breastfeeding experience, and that chiropractors can offer a helping hand with some of these issues alongside other professionals.

Why kiln dried logs? Today more and more people are buying wood burning stoves to heat their homes and it is a common assumption that wood is wood – Not true. The best logs to burn in a wood burner are kiln dried logs because they burn hotter than any others. • Kiln dried logs have less moisture content (typically around 10-20%), less energy is therefore required to burn off residual moisture so more energy converts to heat. • Kiln dried logs are much more energy efficient – the higher temperatures generated by the logs means everything is burnt, including the gases released by the wood. (In cooler fires these gases simply escape up the chimney.) • Kiln dried logs are more economical – because they burn hotter and more efficiently and therefore less of them are required to achieve the same heat output. • Kiln dried logs help maintain the integrity of your wood burner and flu – the higher temperatures burn off the water and sap remaining in the wood stopping it from building up as tar condensate on the inside of the burner and flu, causing a loss in efficiency and rusting. Burning logs is more environmentally friendly than burning other fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil. Its also much more satisfying sitting in front of a real fire! Burning logs releases CO2 into the atmosphere which is absorbed by other plants and provided a tree is planted to replace each tree burnt, the same amount of CO2 will be absorbed by the tree as it grows, hence the net CO2 release will be zero. All our logs come from sources that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved. We provide trailer / pick-up loads, dumpy and net bags and kindling throughout the year. Why not order this summer and be prepared for the winter.

The 61stHexham Abbey Festival: Britten’s Got Talent Friday 20 – Saturday 28 September 2013 Most events to take place in Hexham Abbey, Hexham To tie in with nation-wide 100th birthday celebrations of composer, Benjamin Britten, Hexham Abbey Festival has been titled Britten’s Got Talent– and talent there certainly will be, ensuring the Festival remains one of the North East top cultural events. Here is just some of the line-up during 20-28th September: 4 Girls 4 Harps, celebrity organist David Briggs, cellist Matthew Barley, Théatre sans Frontières), the TashiLhunpo monks, members of the Durham-based young Chamber Choir ‘Renaissance’, as well as the celebrated Festival Chorus directed by David Murray and eminent choral specialist, Martin Neary.

Benjamin Britten

Britten followers and those new to his music will not be disappointed, as there are treats in store for everyone – from jazz settings of his music performed by ‘Look Stranger’ with to his Missa Brevis, sung by the Abbey Girls Choir in the Festival Eucharist to name but two. Worldrenowned cellist, Matthew Barley, is set to play Britten’s Third Suite for Cello, and pieces such as one of the sublime and evocative Bach cello solo suites. He is performing at the Abbey as part of his national Tour entitled ‘Around Britten’, encompassing 100 performances between March and November of this Britten centenary year. A series of visuals have been commissioned to accompany his performance. The Britten theme will reach its culmination with a candlelit performance of Ode to St Cecelia under the direction of Martin Neary LVO, previously Organist of Westminster Abbey.

Innovations

In his second year as Festival Director, Marcus Wibberley will be building on the success of last year’s 60th anniversary celebrations and 2013 promises to be even better. His innovative twilight concert series, will again open the doors to audiences earlier than usual, so the unique atmosphere the evening sun creates in the Abbey can be enjoyed while meeting friends over a pre-concert drink form the Festival bar. Emerging young artists will again be invited to participate in the Festival such as Lucy Hoile (cello) and Alex Banfield (tenor). The celebrity organist is sure to wow more than organ aficionados, adding the projection of a silent movie to the concert. Local theatre company, Théàtre sans Frontières, will add to the Festival’s multi-cultural flair this year with their piece ‘Moulin Magique’ performed in the Queens Hall Arts Centre just across the road from the Abbey. The grand finale, the atmospheric twilight candle-lit concert, will feature a choral concert accompanied by a Baroque string quintet and organ.

International and local

Keeping the Festival truly international, this year Hexham Abbey will resound to the Tibetan music and Buddhist chanting of the Tashi Lhunpo monks who have a keen following in these parts. Armed with strong voices and instruments, characteristic vibrant attire and head dresses they promise to be a sight and sound not to be missed.

54

The Festival Chorus, will perform Britten, amongst others, to an expected full-house. Made up entirely of North East singers, the 80-strong Chorus is very popular with Festival goers; many might say it’s a shame it only convenes for the Festival performance. This year’s concert will include Britten’s ever-popular St Nicolas.

Variety

As in previous year, the Festival promises something for everyone: Hexham based Théàtre sans Frontières’ perform Le Moulin Magique, while Buddhist chants by the Tashi Lhunpo monks will most certainly enthrall their audience. The Abbey buildings will provide the perfect setting for a concert of 16th and 17th century music performed by Passamezzo, as well as for the display of work by the North East Embroiderers Guild. Live music from folk to jazz is expected to be heard outside the Abbey’s main entrance during the street festival on the 3rd Saturday in September which, this year coincides with the ‘Art Opens Doors’ trail through the town centre, show casing Hexham’s plentiful and high quality artists’ studios and galleries. Groups of local school children will, as always, be inspired by the workshops on offer during school hours. Hexham Abbey Festival is due to take place between 20th and 28th September. Tickets will go on sale from the Queens Hall Arts Centre box office in Hexham on 17th July 2013. For full details and an up-to-date programme, go to the Festival’s website: hexhamabbey.org.uk/festival or call: Tel: 0808 126 1257. Box Office: 01434 652 477, www.queenshall.co.uk

Hexham It’s Saucy but Nice Hello readers, We certainly can’t complain about the summer this year; I did have my doubts writing my last article at the beginning of June but couldn’t have predicted something as glorious as we’ve had – and still it’s set to last! There’s certainly been a glut of fruit this year, especially those native to Britain: strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries - the list is endless. For those of you who are wanting to make your own preserves now is the time; and there’s nothing better than making it from hand-picked fruit off the bush. Preserves are very versatile and can be used in all manner of dishes; it’s not just a matter of spreading it on toast or as a filling for a cake. Take redcurrant jelly, this can be added to meat juices to make a rich gravy; don’t forget, jelly is different to jam as it contains no seeds and is best in sauces. I like to experiment with different ingredients and find this is far better than purchasing some gravy granules off the shelf – not that there’s anything wrong with this product, it’s easy and quick; but when it comes to flavour, there’s simply no comparison with real homemade gravy. Everything is made so easy today that people have forgotten traditional cooking skills. It’s also a fallacy to think that it’s timeconsuming, it’s not. It will also become much easier the more times you make it. Just follow the steps below and you’ll end up with rich, tasty gravy that goes with just about anything.

Simple Onion Gravy For this recipe you will need: a large frying pan, measuring jug, tablespoon, and wooden spoon. Gravy boat (optional)

Ingredients: 2 Red onions, (these are sweeter than white onions, but you could still make the recipe with them). 1 sprig of Thyme 1 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional) 2 chicken stock cubes 200 ml of dark ale (optional) Make up 1 pint of stock using the two stock cubes. Note: you might not need all of the stock you make. Heat 1tbsp oil in a frying pan and add the onions and the thyme; stir them regularly to ensure you don’t burn them as this can leave a bitter taste to the flavour of the gravy. When they are just turning brown stir in the flour and cook the two together for about a minute. Cooking the flour this way prevents the gravy being floury. Gradually add the stock to the onions - it is best to add a small amount at first and combine, then gradually add the rest. This will prevent lumps from forming; keep stirring. If you are using ale you will require less stock. Add the redcurrant jelly, Worcestershire sauce and ale (optional). The gravy will begin to thicken. Turn down to a low heat and simmer until the gravy has reduced slightly. Do not place a lid on the pan as this will prevent the gravy from reducing down. Stir occasionally to stop the gravy sticking to the bottom of the pan. Note: you can replace the fresh thyme for a tsp of dried mixed herbs. But try to use fresh if you can.

Enjoy!

Darras Hall & Ponteland The Autumn Years It’s usually around now that there’s a grudging acceptance that summer is over: the light changes; the air smells different; and thoughts turn to autumn, with the leaves turning on the trees, and the nights drawing in.

tolerate each other once their family has moved on. With many people remaining active for longer, some are seeking to make the most of a time in their life without familial ties and with a level of financial certainty.

Whilst autumn is often seen as a time of ending, for some it’s a time of new beginnings, particularly for those preparing to go to university for the first time. It’s a time of excitement, trepidation, and often tears from parents who are faced with returning to an empty nest for the first time in many years.

Despite the average length of marriage of divorcing over 60s being over 27 years, it seems that is no longer a bar to starting over. It has been suggested that the lessening stigma of divorce contributes to this rising trend, as does the increased financial independence of women.

Interestingly, empty nest syndrome has been cited as one of the reasons that divorce in the over 60s has risen in recent years. Divorce statistics produced by the Office for National Statistics show that whilst the overall number of people getting divorced each year has continued to decrease since the 1990’s, the number of people aged 60 years and over divorcing has risen significantly during this period, by as much as 73%. The baby boomers are becoming silver splitters! With the children having grown up and moved out and with time on their hands together following retirement, mature couples are finding that not only do they have less in common than they thought, but that they are not prepared to simply

Ros Altmann, Director General of the over-50s group Saga, said: ‘This is more proof that life is really changing for the over-60s and for many it’s the start of the next phase of their lives, not the end of their life as people in the past were often led to expect”.

it can leave at least one of the parties feeling vulnerable and lonely and seemingly ill-equipped for single life at a mature stage in life. Dividing possessions and starting again can be deeply traumatic after so many years as part of a couple. As with everything, a situation which is not going to go away is best faced with an armoury of information and options. Knowing how to source support on a legal and financial level, and more importantly, on an emotional level is key to moving on. We recognise that at Major Family Law and have a number of services specifically designed to support you and ensure that you are able to start a new chapter with confidence.

And it’s true that as a nation we are living longer. Therefore, the overall number of people over 60 is increasing. Increased life expectancy would tend to show that marriages are now more likely to end in divorce and less likely to end by the death of a spouse than in 1991. Whilst this trend may fly in the face of our preconceptions, it is nevertheless a reality which needs sensitive and expert handling. For some,
