Rwanda’s Meetings Planners Guide 2015
Kigali City Centre
Remarkable Rwanda
Let’s Talk Business Rwanda is increasingly becoming a destination of choice by international conference and event organisers. Rwanda’s tourism industry, a key pillar in the country’s Vision 2020, is one of the country’s largest employers and foreign exchange earners. Rwanda is a remarkable tourism and conference destination. The country has successfully hosted a number of high-level conferences such us the Transform Africa Summit in October 2013 (2,000 delegates), the recent Africa Development Bank General Assembly (2,500 delegates) in May 2014 as well as numerous others such as the Africa Insurance Summit (800 delegates) in June and ITC’s World Export Development Forum (800 delegates) in September 2014. Rwanda’s capital city is preparing to unveil the new US$ 300 million Kigali Convention Centre (KCC) due to open in the second quarter of 2016. Positioned on a hilltop in the heart of Kigali near Parliament, the development is set to become one of the most recognized modern structures in Africa. Encompassing a translucent dome modeled on a traditional King’s Palace, a multi-functional hall with a maximum capacity of 2,600, the KCC will help position Rwanda as the leading MICE destination in East Africa. The Government of Rwanda has identified the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events (MICE) tourism sector as providing a clear and long-term opportunity to diversify and grow Rwanda’s export strategy. In tandem with the KCC a number of international 4 and 5-star hotel brands are currently under development (i.e. Radisson Blu, Marriott, Park Inn, Sheraton, Kempinski, Protea, Golden Tulip) with over 1,000 high-end rooms coming into the market in the foreseeable future. Just 10 minutes from the city centre, the Kigali International Airport (KIA) upgrade is now complete; the expanded airport is able to handle 1,500,000 passengers annually (from its prior capacity of 500,000 passengers). The nation’s flag carrier RwandAir is one of the fastest growing airlines on the African continent connecting to business hubs in East Africa, West Africa, South Africa, the Middle East and Europe, positioning the country as a strong contender for growth in the MICE sector as well as opening trade linkages and facilitating investment. Kigali city hub is ideally positioned to allow easy access to an incredible offering of pre and post-convention tours to explore Rwanda’s remarkable natural and cultural attractions. The “Land of a Thousand Hills”, Rwanda boasts undulating green landscapes of hills, Africa’s largest protected rain forest, volcanoes, coffee and tea plantations. It is home to one third of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorillas, fourteen species of primates, one third of Africa’s bird species, three National Parks one of which is a big game safari park, resorts and islands on the expansive Lake Kivu, graceful dancers, artistic crafts and the most friendly of people. Rwanda has a rich culture that includes captivating music and dance, a growing contemporary art industry and wonderful crafts including pottery, basketry, painting, jewelry, woodcarving and metalwork. A window into Rwanda’s history is provided by the many memorial sites and museums preserved around the country. A number of Community Based Tourism experiences offer travellers the opportunity to experience the destination’s rich cultural life. Remarkable Rwanda would be delighted to welcome you and your event!

Explore Remarkable Rwanda
Kigali - The Capital City
Kigali is located at Rwanda’s geographical heart. The rapidly growing city of Kigali is not only the national capital, but also the country’s most important business centre and main port of entry. Kigali, founded in 1907 as a small colonial outpost with little link to the outside world, is now 100 years old. The city of Kigali has grown into a modern metropolis – the heart of the emerging Rwandan economy and amongst the safest and friendliest of African capitals. Its population is approximately 1 million. Kigali is blessed with a moderate high altitude climate that belies its tropical location. The main residence and offices of the President of Rwanda are located in the city, as are the government ministries. Kigali International Airport (KIA) is located in the suburb of Kanombe at the eastern edge of Kigali approximately 15 kilometres from the central business district of the city. KIA has recently been upgraded and can now accommodate 1,500,000 passengers annually via its approximately 400 weekly flights. It serves as a regional hub as well as catering to a number of international airlines. In 2014, Kigali Airport ranked 7th best regional airport in Africa. The nation’s flag carrier, RwandAir, is one of the fastest growing airlines on the African continent connecting to business hubs in East Africa, West Africa, South Africa, the Middle East and Europe, positioning the country as a strong contender for growth in the MICE tourism sector. Kigali houses several memorials, museums, and centres dedicated to the Rwandan Genocide, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre and Camp Kigali. Other museums include the Presidential Palace Museum and Kandt House Museum of Natural History. Lycée de Kigali is the second-largest secondary school in Rwanda. Green Hills Academy, in the upmarket suburb of Nyarutarama is a top private school offering IB at A level and the Cambridge International Programme at O level. It has a 50/50 English-French curriculum. Kigali is home to a number of university campuses for example the Kigali Independent University as does the University of Rwanda College of Science and Technology as well as the Rwanda Tourism University College. The city provides a diverse range of accommodation options with a wide selection of hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfast on offer. There are currently over 1,000 three to five star rated hotel rooms within easy access of the Kigali Convention Centre and downtown Kigali, with another 600 due for completion in 2015.
Musanze - Volcanoes National Park
This corner or northwestern Rwanda is a breath-taking unforgettable place where culture, adventure and conservation intersect. The “Parc National de Volcans” (or PNV as it’s known by locals) lies along the Virunga Mountains, with 8 ancient volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Just a short two hour drive from Rwanda’s capital of Kigali, the park is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences. While a visit to the mountain gorillas is often at the top of visitor, the dramatic landscape also offers thrilling hiking and visits to the fascinating golden monkeys. PNV is also one of Rwanda’s conservation epicenters, where many non-profit organizations base their operations. Visitors can pay homage to the legendary scientist and gorilla advocate Dian Fossey with a hike to her tomb or a visit to the Dian Fosse Gorilla Fund that continues her legacy of research and advocacy to this day. Near the park, the bustling and vibrant markets of Musanze are a place to immerse yourself into everyday Rwandan culture. Go deep into the earth with Musanze’s caves - one of the area’s newest attractions.
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge Venue Description Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is located close to the headquarters of the Parc National des Volcanos from where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla – perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. Guest cottages and the main lodge building have been beautifully constructed and appointed and the lodge is the perfect base from which to explore this unique and fascinating corner of Africa. The lodge is built and operated by Governors’ Camp.

A stunning National Park where the past has been revived Akagera National Park is located in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania. It is named after the Akagera River that flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into a labyrinth of lakes of which the largest is Lake Ihema. The forest fringed lakes, papyrus swamps, savannah plains and rolling highlands combine to make Akagera amongst the most scenic of reserves anywhere in Africa. It has exceptional levels of biodiversity and forms the largest protected wetland in central Africa. Of the primates, olive baboons, vervets and the secretive blue monkey are seen during the day, with bushbabies often seen on night drives. Of the larger predators only leopard, hyaena cand side-striped jackal are still present and although lion once occurred throughout Akagera, the population was wiped. Plans are underway for the reintroduction of lion, as well as black rhino in 2015, which will restore Akagera’s ‘Big 5’ status Due to its wide variety of habitats, Akagera is an important ornithological site with nearly 500 bird species.
