No 4 of our Quick Tips to Reduce Anxiety One Day Mindfulness Retreat Six-week Mindfulness Course Events including our Winter Social Quick reference card for January's events
Happy New Year! To all the students, graduates, trainee teachers, friends and followers of Bromley Mindfulness
How to find everything that you'll need in 2017 in a single moment It's that time again... New year, new me, new body, new job, new travel destinations, new car, new clothes, new partner etc. etc. etc. The gyms fill up, recruiters get more calls as do travel agents and divorce lawyers. The days begin to lengthen as winter turns to summer and change fills the air.
The key to the future is the present moment We may wish to make 2017 better in some way. We may wish to do some things we have been putting off. We might want new experiences or to travel somewhere new. Most of us have some new goals for the year, those famous new year's resolutions. The future fills our minds and we become sucked into the vortex of needs and wants. We can feel the pull off the 'new me' that the advertisers are so fond of. The aspirational 'new me' shops from the future as it visualises how things could be and so, slowly but surely, the reality of the present moment drifts out of focus.
Every choice happens in the moment you are in This pull of the future isn't a bad thing in itself, it is just a diversion, a dead-end. It is useful to realise, that although although our plans are about the future, the changes we want to make, when we make them, will be made in our present moment. If we make a resolution to go to the gym for instance, it's a plan for the future, but the decision to actually go, on the day, when we make the choice to do so, is taken in our present moment. How we act in those future present moments makes the difference in whether we reach our goals or not. The present moment is what we can see, hear, smell, touch and taste along with our thoughts and emotions and an awareness of how we are acting. Mindfulness-Based Resilience, taught at Bromley Mindfulness, gives you the practical tools to help you to cope with your inevitable future difficult and uncomfortable present moments. It is about using the mindfulness, stress management and emotional regulation techniques to cope with the discomfort of confronting challenges and making
changes. To learn how to get more from the present moment we offer a comprehensive menu of training options to suit you.

4. Quick Tip to reduce Anxiety - Stop wearing a watch If you don’t have a busy schedule you don’t need to constantly be aware of the time. If you have a mobile, you have access to the time if you need it. Checking the time constantly keeps you in the future and moves the focus of your attention away from the present moment. For most people, for most of the time, the present moment is overwhelmingly good. If we put our life situation (our bank balance, our house, our car, our responsibilities etc.) to one side and experience our sensory present moment (what we can see, hear, smell, touch and taste), we can see that the present moment is mainly quite neutral. The future however, is unpredictable and filled with potential threats, so it becomes a source of anxiety, help yourself to return to the overwhelmingly good present moment. Leave your watch in a drawer. Try it for a while and let me know how you get on.
