Anxiety Quick Tip No.3 - No news is good news Reading the news can be unhelpful for your happiness! Although it's important to be aware of current affairs, the bias in the media to publish the most shocking, negative stories with end-of-the-world headlines can be really unhelpful.

The global media scours the planet for bad news and competes for the most shocking headlines. The more shocking, alarming or tragic, the news, the more papers they sell or the more visits to their website.

That means, if you are a compulsive consumer of news, you can unconsciously, create a view of the world that makes it appear more hostile and unfriendly than it actually is.

We are designed to identify threats. Even if we don't need to! Identifying threats is a survival trait that we are programmed for. Our ancestors ‘needed’ to know whether there was plague in a neighbouring village or if we were due to be attacked by a neighbouring clan.

Those people and communities that paid attention to the warning signs and were motivated to respond and would have been the ones that survived.

Priming ourselves to think the worst Now that we aren't in a life or death environment this morbid fascination with bad news can undermine our well-being. So what is the answer? Do you think you could avoid the news for a couple of weeks?!

Anxiety Quick Tip no.3. News Detox Tip No.3 is to make a conscious effort to avoid the papers, watching the news or reading news websites unless you absolutely need to for at least one week. You might want to replace reading the papers or news websites with something you enjoy. One of those books you always wish you had read maybe?

If you need to find something in particular, find it online and try to avoid reading unrelated stories. Did you feel any better at the end of your week? Let us know, we'd love to hear how you got on.

Free Guided Mindfulness Meditations Listen to Bromley Mindfulness talks and guided meditations online You can now benefit from Bromley Mindfulness talks and guided meditations anytime by listening to Bromley Mindfulness talks and guided meditations online (on Soundcloud).

Recorded live at one of our popular weekly mindfulness classes As many of you will know, mindfulness practice is a bit like exercise - the more you do it, the more you benefit (this includes reduced levels of anxiety or stress and an increase in happiness).

Find a stronger place to face life's challenges These meditations can also help if you find yourself feeling particularly anxious, stressed or sad. They are designed to help us redirect our minds to less worrying experiences. Alternatively you may find it useful to listen to these before you face situations you expect to be challenging, say at lunch time at work before a big presentation or a difficult meeting.
