“república bananera” (BANANA REPUBLIC)

república bananera is a pejorative term for a country that is considered politically volatile, impoverished and backward, whose economy depends on a few products with low added value (symbolized by bananas), ruled by a dictator or a militar council. Subsequently popularized the term “República bananera” to extend it so derogatory to any country in the world that is seen as fraught with political instability, corruption, and lawlessness in their daily lives.
