Sustainable Design Sustainable design is the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability. The purpose of sustainable design is to “eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design.” Manifestations of sustainable design require renewable resources, impact the environment minimally, and connect people with the natural environment. Beyond the “elimination of negative environmental impact”, sustainable design must create projects that are meaningful innovations that can shift behavior. A dynamic balance between economy and society, intended to generate long-term relationships between user and object/service and finally to be respectful and mindful of the environmental and social differences.

Ecology for Designers Ecology is the branch of biology that studies the relationships among organisms and their environment. This study on a global scale includes land, water, atmosphere, organisms, habitats, and material cycles in the biosphere and the relationships among these parts. There is also a human element that is very important to these studies because of the large impact that human populations have on the Earth’s ecosystems. Understanding ecology is very important for designers looking to steps in a more sustainable future. Designers have a lot of power when it comes to bringing manufacturing, material, or energy waste issues to the forefront. Identifying these issues early on in the design process can help to create a product that has a minimal or even positive impact on the planet and can even lead to a better product overall. “Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development is about making life better for everyone. This should not involve recklessly destroying our own natural resources, nor should it involve polluting the environment.” K. Global Impacts Sustainable design has come to the forefront of a lot of companies and designers alike because of the undeniable impact we are having on our planet. The global temperature was at an average of 57.2 degrees Fahrenheit in 1965 and in 2011 it reached an average of 58.4 degrees Fahrenheit. An increase of 8 percent would cause most of the Earth’s land surface to turn to a desert. Human population is estimated to reach over 9 billion by 2050 and most of this growth is happening in populations with low income. This increased population is leading to more cropland demand which is converting forest land into land used for nonbiologically diverse crop species. We are also exerting more control over fresh water supplies with reservoirs, dams, and canals, while the oceans are becoming more acid because of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Domesticating the Planet Humans cultivate species such as cattle while depleting others through hunting, overfishing and loss of habitat. Some scientists believe humans are causing the planet’s sixth great mass extinctions. The unprecedented growth of the human population coincides with the dramatic increase in species extinctions. The average species abundance of 3,000
wild populations dropped 40% between 1970 and 2010. 11% of all birds, 25% of all mammals and 34% of all fish species are on endangered species lists. One-half of all tropical plant species are at risk of extinction. The cause is destruction of habitats from human interference, pollution and climate change.

Environmental Ethics Environmental ethics is the idea that the environment has moral rights that contravene the notion that humans can use nature for our own benefit. This idea seems absurd but our environmental crisis is made possible by the view that the natural world is something that can be freely used. In todays views, science and technology are prevail of everything, but in past cultures nature was viewed as equal and sacred. We will have to change our view of ourselves being the most important and embrace the idea of environmental ethics to see a cultural change which will allow for large scale changes in environmental impacts.

Consumer Electronic Products A consumer electronic product is electronic equipment intended for everyday use, most often in entertainment, communications and office productivity. These products make up a large part of the consumer retail market and therefore make up for a lot of electronic and packaging waste. To get a feel for the direction and focus of the newest consumer electronics, I looked into the 2016 Consumer Electronic Show. Given the large impact these products have on the planet, it was sad to see that there were not more new products that focused on sustainability. This shows that there is are still very large changes that need to be made in the way we design, use, and think about these electronic devices.

Case Study
IKEA Business Model
IKEA has established three major goals that they are striving to meet to both grow as a business and have a positive impact on the planet. These goals are a more sustainable life at home, resource & energy independence, and a better life for people and communities. To reach these goals IKEA created their People & Planet Positive targets that create specific goals they would like to reach and the time frame to do so. IKEA is a company that makes its money selling home goods and a great way for them to communicate the importance they have for living sustain-ably is to create products that not only hold true to their quality and design standards, but also allow the customer to live more sustain-ably. Not only does IKEA want to create products that will allow their customers to live more sustain-ably, but they also want the materials and sources used to create them to reflect these same ideals. They are instilling these values within every part of their company because they truly want to make a change in way that sustainability is practiced and to encourage others to do the same. The last pillar of IKEA’s company philosophy is very concerned with making a positive impact in an intangible way. They want to focus on the quality of life of all their employees, suppliers, and those less fortunate around the
world. These are less about sustainability but is necessary to include because it is something that IKEA is very proud and passionate of. Responsible sourcing of the raw materials used in IKEA products is something that they are both very proud of and see as being very important to future generations. “By working closely with our suppliers and other partners, we try to ensure the materials we use are produced using methods that are better for people and the environment. This helps us to safeguard valuable natural resources for future generations and sustains our business by providing access to an affordable and reliable supply.” Wood and cotton are purchased in large quantities to produce IKEA products so they focus a lot of attention on them, but they also are concerned with material like leather, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and natural fibers and the impact that they have within communities and the environment. IKEA has also been a founding member of numerous climate change initiatives, such as We Mean Business that is a group of global business organizations that create a voice for businesses to speak with governments and encourage climate policy and the RE100 who work towards businesses using only renewable sources of energy.

Original Product Prompt Purchase a consumer electronic product within the price range of $50 to $150. Disassemble, weigh, and analyze every part of the product and the packaging to create a comprehensive system bill of materials that shows the various impacts throughout the products life-cycle. Then redesign the product making it 50% more sustainable.
Guardzilla Personal Security System The product I chose is the Guardzilla All-InOne Video Security System. I bought this product for the retail price of $99.99. It is an affordable, easy-to-use, customizable security system that streams video to users’ smart phones in real-time and captures pictures. The motion sensor and siren capabilities allow Guardzilla to identify and deter unwanted intrusions.

Product Deconstruction Product Impact Summary The first step to analyzing the product is to take the whole thing apart and weigh all of the different parts and pieces, including the packaging. Upon opening the packaging it became very obvious that there was a lot of wasted space. The large green box housed a small power brick and some set up instructions, yet it took up over half the overall packaging size. The product shared a lot of the waste that the packaging had. Once again there was a lot of unused space and unnecessary parts. There
were also four separate PCB’s that had to be manufactured to allow for the triangular form to work with the electronic components. The product also used 21 screws to mount the different components and PCB’s in place. Last thing that I came across was how all of the different components were sealed up and needed to be broken to access a lot of parts.
Once all of the parts and pieces were named and weighed I needed to find out what materials they were made of. Unfortunately none of my plastic parts were labeled so I had to use the burn test to figure out what kind of plastic they were. Then the transport impacts of the ocean freighter and 16t truck were added. With all numbers crunched, by far the most impactful part of my product were the PCB’s.

Concept Dump The Ecodesign Strategy Wheel Now that the product has been broken down and analyzed, it was time to start developing concepts to reach the 50% increase in sustainability for the redesign. For this we used the Okala Ecodesign Strategy Wheel to go through and think about and try and come up with solutions for the various sustainability challenges throughout the product life-cycle. Going through the wheel once going clockwise and then again counter clockwise helped not get stuck on one concept and look at things from another angle.

Concept Development Narrow It Down After going through the Ecodesign Strategy Wheel twice to get around 90 different concepts, it was time to narrow it down and begin developing the top 3 concepts that would have the greatest impacts. All three of my concepts would include a reduction in the size of the internal PCB.

Concept A
My first concept is centered around using low mounted to the outer shell with two screws impact materials and manufacturing processes. and upon removal of these screws the user would have access to the internal components The camera would be make of two parts that for repair. would make up the protective casing, a strong outer sleeve made of a extruded metal and The packaging concept for this design would an internal piece made of injection molded be very minimal because the outer metal casing recycled plastics. The inner housing would be would protect the product in most instances.

Concept B
My second concept took an inside out approach. Reducing the size of the PCB by integrating them all onto a single board lead to the idea to allow the PCB to be the center piece and build everything else up around it. I focused on trying to use as little material as possible in the design and keep it very simple in the way that it functioned.
Besides the PCB this design would have two simple casings build around it for protection but there would also be openings that would allow for the PCB to be seen from all angles. A single screw on top and a single screw on the bottom would be the only fasteners needed. With this design I also wanted to focus on
the versatility of the product, so I decided that having it be wall mounted would give it more flexibility to where it could be placed and what it could watch. This concept would also increase lifetime hours because parts can easily be interchanged.

Concept C
With my final concept I wanted to really focus on increasing the lifetime hours by creating a secondary life that the product could be used for as well as building a deep connection with the product. The idea that a device that is used to protect your home, belongings, and loved ones, could be used to cherish them in its secondary life was a very enticing thought.
The security camera would be built with a slot of some sort that would allow the user to slide in a photo and have it serve a secondary purpose as a picture frame. Picture frames can last a lifetime so this concept would reduce the material impacts to next to nothing. The electronic internal components would be able to be removed and sent back to the manufacturers
for them to safely and responsibly recycle. This is where the packaging would become important because having the packaging be used as a case until the electronic parts needed to be sent back would greatly decrease their impacts as well.

Refinement Decision
The concept that I ultimately chose was the inside out designed security camera. This design uses the concept of necessary technology, meaning it is not trying to do or be anything other then a security camera. I also reflects the internal technology more accurately then the original design. The flexibility of placement, reduction in product and packaging size, and easily repair all made this concept seem like the best choice. I did take elements from the other two concepts as well such as the reusable packaging of Concept III and the simple assembly of Concept I.
Packaging
There were two main concepts for the direction of the packaging. The first being similar to Concept I in that it would use very little materials. This design would have a cardboard box as a base that would house the power cord and instructions and then a simple strap would wrap around the product and hold it secure. This concept ultimately would not work out because of the lack of protection of the camera itself.
The second concept was to use a well crafted sliding box. In this box there would be a space for the power cord, wall mount, and camera. This type of box would allow the instructions to be printed on the box itself. This box would be used later as a means of transport but mostly come in handy in the products end-of-life because it would be used to send the camera back to the manufacturer to be reused or recycled in return for a cash rebate.
Details The details of this design were the hardest part because i wanted to keep it very simple so that manufacturing parts would not be highly impactful and not need a lot of tooling. Details I needed to work out were how the camera was to be mounted to the wall and how the parts would all be mounted together. For wall mounting I decided to go with a pressure fit ball and socket joint. This would allow a wide range of views from a single mounting position. The way that I figured out how the Parts would mount together came again back to the main PCB component. There would be two molded parts mounted to the PCB that would be secured to the top and bottom casings with a single screw.

to effectively reach the 50% increase in sustainability because the PCB’s amounted for 78% of the overall impacts of the original product. Aside from the PCB integration,the simple sliding casing was also enticing. The casing is made with enough room around the PCB to fit the electronic components that protrude from the board and to allow for room for growth in future updated boards. A lot of the details were applied to the back of the camera. There is the wall mount that is made of a different color plastic so that is represents a change in function. There is also a cord management feature that was added to the backside to take out some of the slack in the cord in different mounting positions.
Final Design The final design stayed true to the original concept of building the camera around the PCB component. The PCB became fully integrated so that all of the electronic components would fit on the same board and allow for less PCB materials to be used. This was on of the few ways

Details Wall Mount / Cord Management The main details on this product is the wall mount and the cord management on the backside of the product. Both of these details are meant to add versatility to the product in more scenarios than the original product allowed. The original product needed to be near an outlet and have a flat surface to sit on for it to work. With the new design the camera can be placed
PCB By far the most important part of this product is the PCB. Early on in the process I fount that the PCB’s amounted for a disproportionate of the overall impacts of the original product so I needed to try and reduce that somehow. The solution was to combine the 4 separate PCB’s into a simple rectangle so that there would be very little to no wasted space. This allowed for me to make a 30% reduction in the overall size of the PCB. The decrease in size also decreased the overall weight of the PCB and in turn reduced the impact. In addition to reducing the size, switching the PCB to be RoSH compliant allowed for a huge drop in impacts throughout the products life-cycle.

The cord management detail on the back was to allow for the excess wire when closer to the outlet to be wound around the back and keep the nice aesthetic of the straight cord.
Packaging The packaging became a very important part of the overall success of the design. The packaging reflected the same efficiency values as the product itself. The packaging was done graphically to align with the existing company aesthetic. The packaging consists of only three parts, the cover, a molded mycelium insert, and the internal box. The internal box allowed for the instructions printed separately on the original packaging to be printed on the back. The higher quality of this packaging also makes it more likely to be kept and reused at the products end-of-life as a way of sending the product back to the manufacturer for a cash rebate.

Mycelium
What is it? Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, threadlike hyphae. Fungal colonies composed of mycelium are found in and on soil and many other substrates. A typical single spore germinates into a homokaryotic mycelium and when two compatible homokaryotic mycelia join and form a dikaryotic mycelium; that mycelium may form fruiting bodies such as mushrooms. A mycelium may be minute, forming a colony that is too small to see, or it may be extensive

Since 2007, a company called Ecovative Design has been developing alternatives to polystyrene and plastic packaging by growing mycelium in agricultural waste. The two ingredients are mixed together and placed into a mold for 3–5 days to grow into a durable material. Depending on the strain of mycelium used, they make many different varieties of the material including water absorbent, flame retardant, and dielectric.

Material Usage Packaging The packaging on the original product was very wasteful in both space and material efficiency. It had a huge acrylic cover and thermoformed plastic pieces to hold the electronic components in place. With my packaging I got rid of all plastics and used chipboard wrapped in paper for the advertising. There is also no wasted space in the newly designed packaging.
Another major innovation was the use of a bioplastic made of mycelium that gives the same structural and protective properties as plastic based foams but with far less of an impact on the planet.

Screws Screws were a very large factor in the overall number of parts and production steps for the original product, with 21 in total. My redesign reduced the number of screws all the way down to only 2 to keep assembly straightforward.
Casing Another large change in material usage was the amount of casing parts needed for the security camera. In the original product they had 8 separately manufactured and molded parts, three of them serving no purpose other than aesthetic purposes. These parts were also made of virgin plastics. My design reduces the number of casing parts to only 2. There is a top and a bottom casing that wrap
around the PCB but also allow for it to be seen from all angles. These parts are also made of recycled ABS. I chose ABS because it is the best overall performing plastic and since my product only has two casing parts, they need to be of good quality. Recycled ABS allows me to achieve the performance of ABS but with a smaller impact.
