EXPLORIN’ The focus of this project is empowering an individual to take responsibly for their own safety by anticipating, planning, preparing, and selecting the appropriate solution for the circumstances they voluntarily will be putting themselves into.

NEW MARKET OPPORTUNITIES UST has purchased a tech start up company and they are planning to leverage these new assets to break into another part of the market. This new direction would be to adapt future technologies into their products and target a wealthier or more involved demographic.

NO WAY OUT! THE FAMILY Enjoy family trips to different outdoor environments and the challenges that they present. They take family vacations at least 2-3 times a year to “go off the grid� and enjoy each others company and the outdoors. Father has a lot of outdoor survival experience and wants to share his passion with his children.

SURVIVAL SITUATION The father, now 45, has gotten a little over confident and has gotten himself injured and is immobile. This routine family outing is now a serious survival situation because there is no way he is making the two day hike back to civilization. The mother (43) and children (15)(13) must take control of the situation of finding help, locating resources, and stabilizing their father until rescue arrives. Making sure they can be found by emergency services, as well as each other, is vital to making sure they all make it out.

GETTIN’ A GRIP This hiking pole is something that I felt was a perfect combination of utility and something that could save the family in my scenario. It was tricky figuring out dimensions that would accommodate everyone and how the user would interact with each feature.

LEAVIN’ DIGITAL BREAD CRUMBS. . . The hiking pole passively sends the user’s geographical latitude and longitude to a UST network that keeps track of the last received location. This information is sent to emergency services when the distress signal is triggered. This information can also be used by the user in app form to track distances and trails that they have traveled.

FEATURIN’ Although ninety percent of the time this hiking pole is just that, a hiking pole, there are a few key features that can be a life saver. Two step SOS activation beacon that prevents accidental activation Smart pole pairing that can find other family members that are lost or injured Kinetic charging system

JUICIN’ Design a juicer that fulfills the specific needs of the user. The design should be catered towards the persona and reflect their views and ideals. Create strong user interactions and improve upon existing models to find a unique solution to an existing problem.

MARKET RESEARCH Looking at the juicers available on the market, there is a severe disparity of any sculptural designs. The market is saturated with very masculine stainless steel appliances.

USER FRIENDLY My persona is a single mother with two children and she is raising them so that they are aware of what they are eating and can begin to form healthy eating habits at an early age. She is a consumer that would greatly benefit from a different breed of juicer. She wants something that she can leave out and have as a conversation piece when friends and family are visiting and most importantly is easy to use and clean.

A JUICER THAT DOES SOMETHING WHEN IT’S DOING NOTHING.

My focus with this juicer was to create a sculptural and unique product that would be proudly left out on the counter or table when not in use. Since it is now out on the counter, the juicer is seen as a center piece and could display the ingredients that it uses.

HOW IT WORKS This juicer has three main components, the top that is a removable bowl, the middle section that houses all of the juicing components, and the bottom that catches the pulp and juice. Pressing on the upper corner of the door triggers the juicer door to open and presents the user with the juice carafe. To clean the user just untwists the middle section and all of the inner juicer components come out.

WATCHIN’ Take a consumer electronic product that is within the 50 to 150 dollar price range and redesign it to be at least 50% more sustainable.

PRODUCT BREAKDOWN

The Guardzilla home security camera was the consumer electronic product I chose to redesign. It became apparent from taking it apart that this product had a lot of wasted space inside and had a lot of tooling involved in manufacturing. The packaging was also riddled with similar problems of wasted space and a large unnecessary acrylic cover.

PRODUCT IMPACT After documenting all of the components of the original product, the largest impacts by far were the four separate PCB boards. The second largest contributor to waste was the clear acrylic packaging.

PCB’S make up 78% of the product impacts.

Wasted packaging makes up 8 percent of impacts.

SIMPLIFY. To reduce the impacts of my product I wanted to reduce the impacts of the PCB boards. To do this I decided to consolidate the four separate boards into one because this would allow for about a 30 percent reduction in size. I was also working to reduce the overall amount of material used, the amount of parts and steps needed to assemble it, and have a packaging system with a low impact that would also be used in a buy back system.

PACKAGING With this packaging design I was able to incorporate things like the instructions and system information. I also used a mycelium molded packaging to house the camera. Overall these elements were able to reduce the packaging impact by 85 percent.

FINAL DESIGN The reduction in both the number of PCB boards and the 30 percent decrease in size allowed for a decrease of 82 percent of the PCB impacts. This design allowed for a longer product life because of how easy it is to take apart and replace individual parts.

BLENDIN’ Find a consumer product to break down and redesign. All of the internal components must remain the same, but the rest is free to change.

BREAK IT DOWN, BUILD IT BACK Taking this product apart showed that there was not much room to work with the large internal components. I wanted my redesign to be catered more towards a male audience, so I began to explore very angled and aggressive forms.

DETAILS AND INTERACTIONS The main interaction that I wanted to solve on this hand blender was the ability to change the speed without using both hands. This way you can always have one hand that’s free to hold whatever you are working with. A small recessed dial allowed this.

FINAL DESIGN The final design tried to blend an aggressive aged shield with a soft rubberized handle. The green slash gives a more masculine feel as well as calls out interaction points.

GROOVIN’ Design a smart speaker that leverages bluetooth, wireless power, and the internet of things to create a truly wireless product. Explore different manufacturing processes, color, material, and finishes. Then document and understand the differences between high and low volume production.

CREATING A TRULY WIRELESS SPEAKER! This smart speaker uses current bluetooth technology, the internet of things, and the future technology of wireless power. These technologies allow for this speaker to be 100% wireless and allows for all new design opportunities.

MANUFACTURING Designing with manufacturing processes in mind means that the high and low volume designs will be different, but they should still share a similar design language. In this case the low volume would be designed first with no budget limitations. The high volume is then designed to emulate the original design in a way that is affordable to the masses.

With my design I wanted to create a speaker that someone would be proud to own and want to keep out to show off. I really liked the hollow center design and the visual tension that it evokes.

LOW VOLUME B.O.M. The low volume speaker design really focussed on having the materials that each part was made from be represented in its truest form. The wooden pods are soft, the aluminum parts provide the rigid structure that holds it together, and the glass spacers create tension both visually and texturally. Since this was the low volume design, cost was not a factor and so expensive custom parts were encouraged.

HIGH VOLUME B.O.M. The high volume design needed to be manufactured from mainly injection molded parts so that the cost of the speaker would be affordable. It was very difficult to create the three pods from the low volume design without tooling costing too much. The solution was to make the speaker from two parts and retain the hollow center from the original design.

HANGIN’ Create a hanger that is cut from a single 60”x 40” flat piece of cardboard. It should be easily constructed and made of only cardboard. The hanger design should also maximize the amount of hangers that can be cut from a single piece of cardboard, as well as minimize the amount of waste.

HANGIN’ OUT The way that I wanted to approach this product was to create a simple hanger that the average person could easily assemble and benefit from. This meant that the hanger had to accommodate different types of clothing (shirt, jacket, pants, belt, ect.) and in order to do that it needed to be quite strong.

15 HANGERS! This hanger is designed to limit the amount of wasted cardboard when cut from the 40�x60� sheet. When unfolded the hanger is essentially a square that allows them to be cut tightly packed when cut out with a laser cutter. This design allowed for 15 individual hangers to be made from a single sheet.

IT’S AS EASY AS 1-2-3! The hanger has a built in tab that simply pushes through the main body and locks into place.

LET’S HANG! The final design ended up being able to carry a heavy jacket, a button up, jeans and a belt without any problems.

CURVIN’ An exploration into how profiles from two different angles interact to create a single cohesive form. This piece was intended to evoke a sense of motion by the way both two dimensional sides interact with each other.

FROM A SINGLE PIECE I wanted my bike to look like it was machined out of a single piece of aluminum. This meant that the transitions from the seat post, chain stays, and top seat tube would need to seamless. This aesthetic would create emphasis on these interior shapes so this is where I planned to creating a color and texture change.

GLUIN’ Take a hand-held product that is currently on the market and identify ergonomic areas of improvement. Then create a new design that resolves this issues.

ERGO NO-NO’S This product has three major ergonomic flaws. Main trigger action is only using a single finger. (RSI) Trigger requires repeated actions to make sure the glue is flowing. Height and angle the glue gun sits above surface.

SOMETHIN’ NEW The next step was to look into the existing market of glue guns and see how they were or were not addressing some of these problems. What I found was that most of the designs were all the same and did not try to solve any of these problems.

BRAND PHILOSOPHY Green Toys is a brand that focuses heavily on the idea of free play. The way that I wanted to approach this was to create a simple yet iconic toy that could be manufactured using Green Toys recycled plastic since this is a major pillar of what their brand stands for. Green Toy is also a strong advocate of open play and this aspect was something that I did not want over think. Part of that ideology is discovery and letting the child learn and use the toy in the way they want to.

IDEATION The inspiration for this toy is an airplane that I myself was enamored with when I was a child, the SR71. This plane made me feel like anything was possible when I was a kid and that is the type of ideas I feel that aligned with both the Green Toys brand and what I wanted to accomplish with this project. I took this inspiration and made it more child friendly, but still upholding the “cool� factor of the plane.

MAKE IT FLY! The final design is made of two main body pieces that snap together and hold the jet engine cone and exhaust in place. The open play elements are the cockpit and the bottom wings. The cockpit could be used to put other toys the child is playing with in it and the wings encourage the child to pick it up and “make it fly!� The bright high contrast colors indicate the different parts and make is pop to younger children.

GROWIN’ Create a soft good that improves the health and wellness of the chosen group. This group being children in third through fifth grade. I focused on how to grow a deeper connection with the child and their lunch bag.

FIELD RESEARCH My group and I wanted to talk to the children directly and see what they wanted their lunch bags to be. We got a lot of interesting responses but it was good to hear what their ideal lunch bag would be.

“I WANT A TREE TO GROW OUT OF MINE!” This was the quote that was yelled out to me by a little girl in a group of children my group and I were interviewing. This single quote ended up being the inspiration for the whole project.

Looking into a lot of the lunch bags on the market, I found a good amount that were eco focused based on the materials they were constructed from, but not many of these bags had an alternative life. The bag being multifunctional would increase the life time hours and could serve as a learning tool for children to start thinking about sustainability at a young age.

REFINE The idea for this lunch bag was to have an alternative life as a planter. Reusable containers were also a must since the bag has a environmental focus and so these dimensions needed to be accommodated. It was a challenge to design the bag so that it could easily transition to being a planter without any major modifications.

SECOND LIFE The bag is just a versatile as a planter as it is a lunch bag. There are drainage holes on the bottom of each compartment so that the plants are not over watered. Then the ice pack compartment allows the planter to be used indoors and can be easily be emptied.


WASHIN’ Design a hand soap that will be created from a two part plaster mold. The soap will be designed for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and should reflect the high quality and elegance of their brand.

MAKING THE MOLD The cube like design I chose made creating the mold very difficult. Since it has four flat surfaces the mold could not be just simply right down the middle of the soap. The solution I found for this was to have the mold create the soap at an angle so that there would be three surfaces that could be used to pull out the final piece.
