Component 1 Product design

Marc Newson

Some inventions that I can use within my designs in order to make them more succesful. This research is vital to make sure I use these shapes and forms.

Marc Newson

Marc Newsons range of work and a compatable bed. This product shows how easy but effective it is. It also shows the funion and how I can use it in my designs

Research on existing products and how I can incorporate them into mine Some of these seating designs can be changed and made into a different product but using the same principle and ideas but changing the variation and the function of the product. I took the green sofa and the brown one and started to experiment and made a different solution with both designs in mind.

Isamu Nouchis

Extracted shapes and forms from some of the designs and drawings Isamu Nouchi has and experimented on some ideas and how they can be developed further.

Design Brief: At the moment there are many similar products of desk organisers but most of them are either too small or too large. Another problem they have is that it's not adjustable and can only be placed and used from certain areas in the desk. Most of the time the desk organiser is not being used as its not aesthsetically pleasing or it doesn’t suit the surrounding colours. Therefore we need to Design a commercial desk accessory organiser with the theme of movement and flow. The office is usually a very stressful place. The usage of the theme movement and flow will calm the person working in the office.

Product Specification Aesthetics

Construction/fitting

•It must suit the surrounding •Must use the theme of movement and flow •Must have a calming look to it and be aesthetically pleasing •Have a polish finish

Cost/Budget •

The product should be a low-cost product as its mass product

Use material that is cheap and can be manipulated very easily

Mass production or batch ?

The construction should be easy and fast.

Features •Adjustable measurements •It must have at least 4 slots for pens, rulers, pencils etc. •Maybe it can be extended or stackable •Have a little compartment for storage •Has to be able to change in measurement or size order to fit the office space •An implemented light ? •The edges must be curved

Areas of interest: Movement and Flow The themes of movement and flow helps the person relax and help the client focus that’s why im using the movement and flow in the waves of water as its very calming to listen to the water splash as well as watching it

Areas of interest: Movement and Flow Here I did some water analysis and how things splash into it. The water splashing gave me more ideas to explore and find different solutions to the main problem of making a desk organizer

Model inspired solutions and development

Development of the shapes and ideas Design 1

Design 1 components and ideas it stem from The idea initially came from the bent wire model I made from the idea of sound waves. Slowly I developed the shape and form of the wire and drawings into this simple drawing. I took it a step further and created a successful CAD work of this product. This is a very easy and simple design but very effective and functional.

This design can be put together to make a joint product with multiple of them

Design 1 – components and construction I decided to follow through with the initial idea of making multiple of the same pieces and constructing them just like a puzzle.

Design 1 – components and function The solid works full finished product. I decided to add doors to the design as it gives it more interest and changes the aesthetics as the door is a different colour the contrast stands out.

Design 1 – components and function I added measurements and how it works with a hand scale to just one of the components of the product

Design 1 – components and function I developed the idea further and came up with a final solution which was to stack them together with a base at the bottom and make it open and close within each part. Only the top one has doors as it needs a cover.

Final design (design 1)

This is how the design could be used with some of the typical things it could organise within an office space and showing the function of the design. The measurements for most of the things were good but when it came to the pencil and keys it was a bit too small for development of the design I must alternate them and make sure I make enough space for the pens.

Design 1: Development and changes I decided to add more to this design and change the base as it got bigger and if the base was the same it would be off balance. I also added more components to it and made it much bigger and made it a separate product to the main desktop area. It could be places beside it and used as a small storage unit.

Final sketches (design 1)

This is the final design all assembled as you can see the different parts move all around it to give flexibility to the user and how he would want to organise his own things. The only thing I would change about this is make the middle section that has all the different parts attached with a stronger material as it leans to one side if all the parts are set on one side.

Final sketches (design 1)

This is section one to the main body of the whole design 1 I made this with the inspiration of the waves and want to make multiple of these with one base.

Final sketches of developed idea 1 This is the final design developed.

Areas of interest: Movement and Flow Here I took the theme of movement and flow and looked into both the movement of wind and the movement and flow in nature in general for example big ammount of grass being dispaced by the wind and then look further in at a flower being moved by wind.

Movement and flow (Leaves and flowers) This is my primary research on flowers and leaves. Here I took some pictures of the wild and picked out some of the shapes and forms to create some simple designs and then later develop them into a more complex design.

Primary research: steel beams and organic leaves If I use cherry or rose wood as a material to create this product it will give it a very good aesthetic and durability as the patterns within this wood type is unique. Also the properties of that wood would make the value of the product be higher due to the use of this hard wood.

Secondary research and ideas

I used the idea from the leaf and found a sculpture of a leaf into a bowl which then I took and found seaweed very interesting, this is where the idea stem from.

Modular research and foldable desks Here are some of the ideas I took from this picture and how I could implement the way the second picture works within a desk tidy

Wood, Stone and concrete could be used in order to make this type f project as it gives a calm aesthetic with lots of interest.

Modular system research and efficiency This modular desk organiser is made up of 3 different parts and all joins up with magnets and the perfect fit. This is using magnets to make the system efficient and easy to move around.

Miniature desks and how they work These abstract tables and furniture can be developed further and be experimented on with the change of scale in order to change it purpose and function from a chair or table to a desk tidy.

Design 2 Organic Inspiration This idea stem from the image below and how it uses simple shapes to make the function very effective. These shapes are not very excited but are very aesthetic and calming which is what I'm looking for to make the office space less stressful.

Design 2 and Inspiration This is where I took the shapes and forms from different parts of the research and put it together into one product and into one design. Here are some of the variations of the design and how they could look if they would join up together in different ways some use friction and puzzle like structure and some use magnets to join together.

Materials for Design 2 Aesthetic The materials for this design will most likely either be concrete and make a mould for it to fit in and create this shape and model. I could crave it out into stone or even use wood to carve it into and make it into one piece. Another way of making this could be 3D Printing.

Design 2 – Components of the design

This is the leaf design on solid works. I made some changes as I was making it because I felt like the other half was useless and wouldn’t add anything to the other half. I wanted to give function and aesthetics at the same time.

Design 2 – components and function

I took the simple design of half of a flower and joined it with a second part and making them work together to make the design more interesting.

Research and inspiration for design 3 Exciting product and how it is put together. This product uses a very simple way of being put together. It uses friction to stay together and the force acting upon the table which gives it friction allow it to have a strong and reliable joint

Research and inspiration for design 3 This is a very simple model and could be used as its very effective in what is the final goal which is to organise the office desk. This can be also mass produced as it’s a simple design.

Design 3 idea and function This design uses multiple parts in order to be effective. It has a stationary for the phone, pens and all sorts of pencils and small objects. It will also have sliding doors with a hidden compartment

15cm

25cm

35cm

Sliding doors and how it works This is the most effective mechanism of how a sliding door works. It consists of wheels on rails which makes a smooth sliding door. The idea of having it made of wood all around would be good but the mechanism wouldn’t work as smooth as it could be.

First and second draft of Design 3 This is the first laser cut idea put together with the use of the sliding door mechanism. The door is made up all of wood and was a success. The only thing I would change about it is the amount of space I have to open because the accessibility of it wasn’t the best as there wasn’t much space to fit my hand in which wasn’t convenient

Design 3 Developed Design 3 wasn’t the best design, it had many difficulties and as soon as I fixed a problem anther one emerged which made it more problematic than effective. Not only this but the sliding door was a default as I developed it and made an opening on the top a segregation parts to make sure somethings don’t mix together. Another problem was that its not aesthetically pleasing and to be honest its ugly and boring. The only thing that would bring anyone attention is the joints and how it got put together. The construction to this was not easy but I did not use any glue or any adhesive all I used was the friction between each join.

Design 3 – function and components Main body part

Lid for the top compartments

Drawer

Design 3 – function and components

I made some modifications to the design as the sliding door was impeding access to the storage. I made a small portable design that can always come in handy when traveling. Added additional separated storage points, with the use of some dividers I was able to give it more functions than just holding your phone.
