Extra support for first-time buyers Getting on the property ladder is an ambition most people have. This is now more achievable with just a 5% deposit. On 3 March 2021, the Chancellor announced a new mortgage guarantee scheme for first-time buyers and home movers. The scheme involves the Government offering a guarantee to banks to encourage them to offer 95% mortgages. And will run from April 2021 to December 2022, with new and existing homes priced up to £600,000, all eligible.

Fun - Every party needs a bit of fun and what better way to get started than a splash in a hot tub. An indulgent buy at around £6,000, the four-person Softtub Legend is super easy to install, has 5 jets, LED lighting and is useable all-year-round.
Colour - A pop of colour always makes people smile and the East London Parasol Company is determined to brighten up our patios with its glamourous range of beautiful hand-made parasols, bases and cushions. It even has a design called Iain that’s covered in kisses and every time a parasol is sold a tree is planted in India and Indonesia. Parasols from £399.
Lighting - There’s something about twinkling lights that makes every occasion and setting seem special. So, take a note from Cox & Cox and string lights over and around your table. Its Ravenna dining set is a great option for smaller spaces at £825 and a set of these extendable globe festoon lights are just £60. Several sets can be combined to run from one power source and with these low-energy lightbulbs lasting for 50,000 hours, you can party into the early hours.
Music - You can’t have a party without music and these portable, splashproof, Citation 200 smart speakers from Harmon Kardon are perfect for bringing your party to life. Available in a black or grey blended-wool finish, these discreet, rechargeable speakers will easily blend into the background to give you up to eight hours of music. Chromecast and Apple Airplay 2 allow you to sync the speaker with your smartphone and built-in Google Assistant gives you voice control. The Bluetooth feature also comes in super handy if your Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the bottom of your garden. Priced at £299.
Comfort - Britain isn’t known for its warmth in the evenings, so beat the chill and huddle around a real fire. Priced from £499, the dualpurpose Jotul Loke can be used as a grill and fireplace and has a distinctive textured appearance that will add a contemporary edge to your patio. It’s also the perfect height for toasting marshmallows and making s’mores and you can sit outside all year round. So grab a blanket and get your toasting forks ready.

The barbecue is used year round these days and if you’re bored of the usual, we have five delicious recipes here which will liven up your garden socials. BEETROOT BURGERS These burgers are packed with colourful goodness. Using jarred beetroot as the main ingredient, I added protein packed chickpeas & feta plus fresh herbs and lemon zest to make the ultimate intensely coloured vegetarian burger. You choose your favourite garnishes – I settled on shredded beetroot, grated carrot, cucumber ribbons, leaves and mayo. The burger can be cooked on the barbecue, in a frying pan or in the oven. 16

Prep: 10 mins Cook: 15 mins Serves: 4 Ingredients:
For the Burger: 1 x 340g jar Beetroot | 400g chickpeas drained | Zest of 1 lemon | 200g feta cheese | 3 tbsp flour (plus extra for dusting) | 1 egg | Bunch fresh parsley and/or mint To serve: Burger buns | Cucumber slices or ribbons | Leaves | Grated carrot | Shredded beetroot | Extra flour for dusting Method: 1. Set aside 2 tbsp Shredded Beetroot for garnishing. Drain the remaining beetroot and chickpeas through a colander. Rinse well and squeeze out as much liquid as possible using the back of a spoon.
2. Add all the burger ingredients to a blender and blitz. Using floured hands form into patties and if possible pop in the fridge to firm. 3. When ready, heat either a griddle or barbecue. Lightly oil the pan or bars and cook the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side. Alternatively they can be baked in the oven for 25 minutes at 180 fan. Turn half way through cooking time. 4. Serve in toasted buns with your choice of toppings but I like cucumber ribbons, leaves and some grated carrot. Credit & Photo - Anna Stanford Anna’s Family Kitchen

BBQ SCALLOPS Prep: 15 mins Cook: 10-15 mins Serves: 6 Ingredients: 6 scallops in their shells, cleaned | 1 tbsp salted butter | 1 clove garlic finely minced | 1 tbsp lemon juice | 1/4 tsp ground white pepper | 1 tsp fine chopped parsley | 2 tbsp desiccated coconut | 60ml of white or rose wine | Small pieces of chunky fresh bread Method: 1. Use a flexible, sharp knife to cut each scallop free from its shell, place scallops-in-shells on a plate. Cut butter into 6 pieces and put a piece on top of each scallop. 2. Mix together the lemon juice, pepper, minced garlic, desiccated coconut and wine and stir well. Spoon a 1/6th of the mixture on top of each buttered scallop-in-shell. 3. Check BBQ charcoal is white hot. Use tongs to place scallops-in-shells on to the BBQ rack. Cook for 5 mins, until bubbling. Leave or turn over only the scallops to cook for another 5 minutes. 4. Scallop is cooked when the meat has turned whiter. Avoid over-cooking! The mixture should be juicy and moist, not dried up. Serve with small pieces of fresh, crusty bread. great choice for a day out!
Ingredients: For the salad: 3 cups of chopped kale, stalks removed | 1 cup of cooked, cooled quinoa | 1/2 cup chopped green spring onions | 1/2 cup of dried cranberries | 1/2 cup toasted almonds
For the dressing: 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice | 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice | 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil | 1 tablespoon 15ml raw sugar | 1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt | 1 clove of garlic | 5g chunk of peeled ginger Method: 1. Blend the dressing ingredients together in a blender until creamy and the ginger is broken down. If you don’t have a power blender, you may need to strain out the ginger fibres after blending. 2. Place kale in a large mixing bowl and add a tablespoon of the dressing. Massage the kale well until it wilts. This step is important to activate the beneficial compounds in kale and also makes it easier to eat. Once the kale has softened, mix through the quinoa and set aside. 3. Place the kale and quinoa mix in a salad bowl and scatter over the spring onions, the cranberries and the almonds. Just before serving drizzle over the citrus dressing and gently toss the salad.
