Congratulatory Letters

Charles E. Dupre, Superintendent of Schools

October 20, 2011 To the Western International Band Clinic Participants and Guests, In Pflugerville Independent School District, our promise to the 23,000 students who comprise PISD and the community it serves is to prepare Each Child for Their Future in Our World. One way we live up to this promise is to provide outstanding extracurricular activities in which our students can participate. Our fine arts program is a shining example of the stellar opportunities PISD provides for students. With world-class instructors and dedicated, passionate students, PISD’s three high schools and five middle schools are known for show-stopping productions featuring tremendous individual and group performances. The Pflugerville Middle School Band exemplifies the best of what our district has to offer. The fact that they are the first middle school band from our district to be invited to the prestigious Western International Band Clinic is a clear indication of the program’s excellence. Our young musicians and their instructors have worked diligently to prepare an inspiring performance for you, and I am confident you will enjoy it. Congratulations to the Pflugerville Middle School Band and instructors Damian Gonzales and Shauna Satrom for this tremendous honor. I know they will represent our district and their school with distinction. Warmest regards,

Charles E. Dupre Superintendent of Schools Pflugerville Independent School District

To the Participants and Guests of the Western International Band Clinic: It is with great pride that Pflugerville Independent School District sends the Pflugerville Middle School Band to participate in your event. Our district is well known throughout Texas for its proud tradition of excellent bands, and the Pflugerville Middle School group is no exception. As the 53rd largest school district of over 1,000 districts across Texas, Pflugerville is recognized for its marvelous fine arts program. Whether it’s a one-act play or a marching band, our students and their directors are without a doubt the finest the Lone Star State has to offer. Before I was a Board of Trustees member, I taught in PISD for many years. Our district has changed dramatically in the last 20 years – more than doubling in enrollment and the number of campuses during that time. However, its core values and its commitment to doing what’s best for students have remained constant over the years. Even in the midst of budget reductions, our community and the district remain focused on ensuring students have rich opportunities in which they can express all facets of their personalities. Pflugerville Middle School Band students are examples of the best PISD has to offer – bright, hard working and steadfast in their allegiance to their school and community. I hope you take as much pleasure in their performance as we do here in Pflugerville. I know they will put on a thrilling show. Best wishes,

Elva Gladney Board of Trustees President Pflugerville Independent School District

To the Western International Band Clinic Participants and Guests: Pflugerville Middle School is a diverse campus of 1050 students located northeast of Austin, Texas. In the last several years, the school district has shifted from an agrarian to suburban neighborhood with urban influences. Within this shift, we celebrate diversity in both our social and economic backgrounds. As there is diversity in our students, there is a notable diversity of program offerings to meet the needs of all clientele. The breadth of offerings and depth of participation is represented in our band which is the flagship of our Fine Arts Department. With over 300 members, one-third of the student population participates in one of the four bands available. Yearly, the band receives top honors at the district, region and state levels. The collaborative structure of our campus is exemplified in the relentless teamwork of our directors, Damian Gonzales and Shauna Satrom. They nurture students from a beginning level program to the more sophisticated program performed by our wind ensemble that serves as a cumulative musical experience. It is with great pride on behalf of the administrators, faculty, and community we present to others what we have been able to keep close to home: The Pflugerville Middle School Wind Ensemble Band. Sincerely,

Mary Kimmins Principal

To the Western International Band Clinic Participants and Guests: Congratulations to the Pflugerville Middle School Band program for being selected to perform at the 2011 Western International Band Clinic and Conference. We are extremely proud of the Pflugerville Middle School Band and the many hours of dedication the students, directors, music staff and parents have extended to perform at this very prestigious event. We thank the nominating committee for selecting one of the Pflugerville Independent School District’s schools. There are five middle and three high schools in the Pflugerville Independent School District and approximately 1,750 students involved in the band programs. These young musicians participate in a very successful music education program in our community. Our bands consistently earn first division ratings at the yearly University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-Reading Contests as well as “Best in Class” designations from various contests in the state and around the country. We commend the Pflugerville Independent School District Board of Trustees, the Pflugerville Middle School administration and staff for their continued support of the band program. We also thank each and every person who has had a part in the success of the Pflugerville Middle School band program and this musical journey. Sincerely,

A bout Pflugerville, Texas Pflugerville is located in Central Texas, just 16 miles northeast of downtown Austin. Home to more than 50,000 residents, Pflugerville was selected by Forbes Magazine as one of the fastest-growing suburban cities in the US. The city has many annual gatherings and boasts numerous athletic fields, beautiful parks, and a 180acre recreational lake with jogging, and hike & bike trails. These factors, along with the active community groups and organizations, have combined to attract individuals and families of all ages to Pflugerville.

The city of Pflugerville was founded in 1860 by German immigrants who fled their homeland to escape the Prussian War. The city has gone through several phases of growth, the biggest happening between 2000 and 2010, when the population more than tripled. Through all of this growth, Pflugerville residents continue to embrace the German heritage on which the city was founded, but also have a great deal of pride in the cultural diversity represented in the community.

About Pflugerville Middle School Pflugerville Middle School, founded in 1985, is the oldest middle school in Pflugerville ISD. Serving grades 6 through 8, the current enrollment is 1,050. PMS and the band program runs on a 7-period day, with three advanced bands and three beginner class periods spread throughout the school day. Each class meets for about 55 minutes and the advanced bands have regular sectionals where they rehearse outside of the school day for one hour every week. Pflugerville Middle School offers a great variety of academic and extracurricular activities and organizations. Along with band, our students are involved in athletics, drama club, National Junior Honor Society, AVID, and many other activities. Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, Pflugerville Middle School became the home of the district’s Highly Gifted Program.

Program Choreogr aphy

Robert Sheldon

(Alfred 2009, Grade 3.5 Performance time 5:25)

Choreography was commissioned for the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. Fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations provide a thrilling opening before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines that offer many opportunities for expressive playing. March in the Shadows

Ed Kiefer

(Carl Fischer 2010, Grade 2 Performance time 3:45)

Composer Ed Kiefer wrote March in the Shadows for E.L. Brown Middle School Band in Thomasville, NC, where he taught for 28 years. Using a march tempo and a military-style drum beat, this non-traditional march is serious, yet quirky, making for a fun performance. It begins quietly in F minor, as if something is lurking in the shadows, and gains intensity throughout. Conducted by Shauna Satrom Egyptique

William Owens

(FJH Music 2010, Grade 1.5, Performance Time 1:30)

The civilization of ancient Egypt spans over 3,000 years, with the earliest people settling in the Nile valley around 7,000 B.C. Egyptique gives a glimpse of this wondrous time, bringing forth images of notable monuments like the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx of Giza. With rich harmonies and driving rhythms, this piece offers a brief musical encounter with all things ancient Egypt. Conducted by Shauna Satrom The Seal Lullaby

Eric Whitacre

(Hal Leonard 2011, Grade 3, Performance time 3:35)

Based on the poem The Seal Lullaby by Rudyard Kipling, this loving and dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of a mother rocking her child to sleep. Originally written and published for mixed choir in 2008, this wind band setting was published in early 2011. The Seal Lullaby Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o’er the combers, looks downward to find us, At rest in the hollows that rustle between. Where billow meets billow, then soft be thy pillow, Oh weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease! The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas! Rudyard Kipling, 1865-1936

Hannibal’s Revenge

Andy Narell, arranged by Paul Rennic

(Drop6 Media 1999, Grade 3 Performance time 3:38)

Hannibal’s Revenge is a tropical fusion composition by steel drummer Andy Narell that first appeared on his 1987 album The Hammer. Dr. Robert Schietroma and Paul Rennick of Drop6 Media have reworked it into a fun grade 3 percussion ensemble piece that features lead pan and double seconds, as well as a full pop rhythm section. Harmonically, rhythmically, and dynamically interesting, Hannibal’s Revenge keeps both performers and audiences grooving. Norm Bergeron, Drum Set Chris Pickens, Bass Guitar Procession to Machu Picchu

Leonard A. Orcino

(Alfred 2010, Grade 2.5, Performance time 2:45)

Machu Picchu is the site of a pre-Columbian (1492AD) Inca ruin, often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas.” It is situated on a mountain ridge 8,000 feet above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. American Historian Hiram Bingham rediscovered the site and brought it to the attention of the world in 1911. Machu Picchu is now considered one the seven wonders of the modern world and is a highly visited tourist destination. The sounds of this work will take you back to ancient times as the intriguing bolero style brings about visions of long lines of Incas marching to this amazing peak. Escape from the Deep

Brian Balmages

(FJH Music 2010, Grade 2.5, Performance Time 4:45)

The Perry Hall Middle School Band from Perry Hall, Maryland, commissioned Escape from the Deep in honor of Bryan Palmer, a tuba player who passed away the summer after his sixth grade year. Balmages composed the piece as a remembrance that there is still hope in the midst of tragedy. Bryan Palmer had a love for music, and his passion for life is demonstrated in this work, which is infused with energy and excitement, yet tempered with moments of silence and solitude. Author Alex Kershaw wrote a book called Escape from the Deep, which tells the true story of the U.S. Navy submarine Tang and the events that took place in October 1944 — just three years after the events portrayed in another of Balmages’ World War II-inspired works, Moscow, 1941. Most importantly, the book recounts the story of the only Americans to date who have managed to escape from a sunken submarine. The piece conveys a military quality, and it evokes thoughts of honor and integrity. As events unfold, the music takes on a much faster and dissonant character representative of the chaotic moments immediately following the Tang’s crash. Excerpts from the familiar patriotic song America appear in various forms, first in adrenaline-packed moments, then in a brief moment of solitude and calm. The final burst of energy portrays the incredible escape. Indeed, amidst great tragedy, an incredible story was born, and against great odds, nine men survived. Conducted by Luis Chico Portillo Chautauqua

Robert W. Smith

(Belwin 2004, Grade 3, Performance time 6:41)

The beauty of the area of New York State for which this piece is named is captured brilliantly in this stunning work by Robert W. Smith! A decidedly nostalgic feel permeates the piece, beginning with the serene, crystalline opening section depicting dawn at the lake. After an invigorating interlude, a most unexpected nickelodeon effect is achieved, which just adds charm and takes the listener on a delicious musical journey back in time.

Norm Bergeron Norm Bergeron grew up in Sanford, Maine, the grandson of first-generation French-Canadian immigrants. As an only child in the 70s, he spent considerable time imagining and creating. Rhythm and melody were constant companions. He distinctly remembers sitting next to the washing machine in the basement of his childhood house so that he could feel the pulse of the wash cycle and sing countermelodies to the spin cycle. Norm made his way through the Sanford, Maine, band program and graduated as a three time All-State percussionist and the first ever, State of Maine All State jazz drummer. He headed to Denton, Texas, to be a Jazz Performance Major at the University of North Texas, where he was a member of the One O’clock Lab Band and toured Portugal, Japan, and Hong Kong. Always interested in music and culture, he found and fell in love with Ethnomusicology and stayed on at UNT to complete a Master’s Degree in Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, and Documentary Film. During all of this time, he has played live and in the studio with many incredible musicians. After a decade long respite living in New England, Norm returned to Texas in 2010. He teaches percussion in the Round Rock and Pflugerville school districts and is an Adjunct Faculty member at Temple College. He now spends considerable time imagining and creating with his two daughters and his many students.

Luis Chico Portillo Luis Chico Portillo is in his fourth year as the Coordinator of Fine Arts for the Pflugerville Independent School District, and he has spent twenty-four years in public education. In his 21 years as a band director, the students in his bands consistently received U.I.L Sweepstakes and “Best in Class” awards for both marching and concert bands. Under his leadership, the Connally Marching Band competed in the biannual UIL 4A State Marching Contest finals from 2003-2007, earning the bronze medal in 2003 and a silver medal in 2007. In addition, the students in his concert bands were twice state finalists in the TMEA 4A Honor Band Competition. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Phi Beta Mu. He has served on numerous UIL and TMEA committees, and in 2007, he was named Teacher of the Year at Connally High School. He is an active clinician and adjudicator around the state and country. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at Austin, and he is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University.
