To the Texas Music Educators Association:

The students, faculty, staff, and administration of Artie L. Henry Middle School are extremely proud and excited you have chosen our Honors Band as the Class CCC Honor Band for 2013! The enthusiasm, dedication, and immense talent of our musicians never cease to amaze me. These young people are tremendous ambassadors for Henry Middle School and the Leander Independent School District. The recognition and acclaim they have garnered is well deserved.

Under the dedicated leadership and direction of our four incredible directors (Robert Herrings, Christina Wishart, Ryan Straten, and Hector Gil), the Henry Middle School band program has grown to over 300 students. In addition to outstanding musicianship, our band students excel in their display of both integrity and ethical behavior. I am proud of the hard work and dedication of each and every member of our exceptional band program and would like to acknowledge their contribution to our school, district, and community. The support of our parents, community, and the LISD administration also deserves mention. Our parent support group spends countless hours and makes tremendous sacrifices to ensure our band has every opportunity to be successful. Without the consistent support of the LISD administration, none of our band’s accomplishments would be possible. Being chosen as the Class CCC Honor Band and the opportunity to perform today is not only an honor, but the culmination of the hard work and dedication of the entire band program at Henry Middle School. Thank you for recognizing our students and giving them the opportunity to share the beautiful music of the 2013-2014 Artie L. Henry Middle School Honors Band. Sincerely,

Dr. David W. Ellis Principal Artie Henry Middle School

FOLK DANCES

DMITRISHOSTAKOVICH | EDITED BY H.ROBERTREYNOLDS Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) was a Russian composer who lived under the Soviet regime. Shostakovich had a complex and difficult relationship with the Soviet government, suffering two official denunciations of his music, in 1936 and 1948, and the periodic banning of his work. Shostakovich composed in a variety of styles using folk music, humor, altered harmonies and many other compositional techniques. Written in Shostakovich’s light-hearted style, this single-movement work is filled with the joy and exuberance of the Russian people. The many folk melodies are combined in a string so that musical energy abounds and the spirit of folk dances can easily be imagined. This work was originally composed in 1943 as the third movement (Dance of Youth) of Otchizna, Op. 63. It was first arranged for Russian band by Mark Vakhutinskii in 1970 and edited for American bands by H. Robert Reynolds in 1979.

BEACHCOMBER

CLIVERICHARDSON | NORMANRICHARDSON Beachcomber, used in early British radio and television, is a laid-back, lighthearted composition. English composer Ernest Tomlinson has described this piece as someone “wandering idly along the sea coast, inspecting the miscellaneous debris brought in by the tides.” The beachcomber is no doubt a person who has retired from the hurly-burly of life in the city and is quite content to explore his local beach every morning before the vacationers arrive. Norman Richardson transcribed Clive Richardson’s original setting for orchestra into this arrangement for wind ensemble. CHRISTINAWISHART | CONDUCTOR

HUCKLEBERRY FINN SUITE

FOUR SCENES FROM MARK TWAIN, OP. 33 FRANCOCESARINI Published in 1884, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of the most meaningful novels of America’s 19th century. Although the book is one of the funniest ever written, the main effect it has on the reader is of intense emotion and deep longing. The story is told by Huckleberry in the first person, and some scenes from the novel take musical shape in the four movements that form Huckleberry Finn Suite (A Lazy Town, Jim, The King and the Duke, Huckleberry’s Rag).

PROGRAM

Through thorough research of America’s folk music of the mid-19th century, this setting by Franco Cesarini has captured the magic of the breathtaking novel. MOVEMENT II | JIM “Jim, had a hair-ball as big as your fist, which had been took out of the fourth stomach of an ox. He said there was a spirit inside of it, and he knowed everything….” MOVEMENT IV | HUCKLEBERRY’S RAG “You don’t know about me, you have read a book by the name of ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,’ but that ain’t no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly.”

A KIND AND GENTLE SOUL

JAMESSWEARINGEN

James Swearingen’s talents as a performer, composer/arranger and educator include a background of extensive training and experience. He has earned degrees from Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. Mr. Swearingen is currently Professor of Music, Department Chair of Music Education and one of several resident composers at Capital University located in Columbus, Ohio. This prolific composer has penned many beautiful pieces. On this occasion, he has created yet another powerful and expressive composition that is highly reflective in nature. Composed in honor of a young boy who passed away far too soon, this emotional work is scored to evoke the kind traits that he displayed to the many people whose lives he touched. CURTAIN CALL

THE DUKES OF WONDER

JOHNWASSON

BRIANBECK

John Wasson leads a busy life as a composer, arranger, producer and performer. Such notable organizations as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Air Force “Airmen of Note,” The Gatlin Brothers, and the Dallas Brass have performed his works.

The Dukes of Wonder was commissioned by and dedicated to the members of the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band and Robert T. Herrings, Conductor, for their 2014 TMEA CCC Honor Band performance.

John received his Bachelor of Music in Theory and his Master of Music in Trombone Performance at the University of North Texas, where he played in the internationally acclaimed One O’clock Lab Band, and was a teaching fellow in Jazz Arranging with Paris Rutherford. Curtain Call was originally composed for the Dallas Brass as part of a collection of works entitled Brass Grooves. Though originally written for 5 brass players and percussion, it really comes to life in this sparkling concert band setting. Conceived as a tribute to all the great finales, encores and reprises written for the stage, Curtain Call is a flashy, energetic flag-waver that features every section in the band! CYNTHIALANSFORD | GUEST CONDUCTOR

“Sir Duke,” by Stevie Wonder, was written as a tribute to Duke Ellington, a jazz pianist, who had an influence on Wonder as a musician. Drawing inspiration from “Sir Duke,” this piece is written in honor of the students and private lesson staff at Henry MS. Brian Beck’s arrangement has an R&B feel and a Funk groove, with jamming solos throughout … sure to make you “Feel it all over!” BILLYMCPHAIL | SAXOPHONE GILBERTELORREAGA | TRUMPET DR. DR. GRADUS AD PARNASSUM

CLAUDEDEBUSSY | ARR. MICHAEL J.BRITT Originally written for solo piano, Gradus ad Parnassum (“Steps to Parnassus”) is an ingenious study in finger independence with a Twentieth Century vocabulary. The Percussion Ensemble is of medium advanced difficulty and requires experienced performers. In the middle, the ensemble slows down and creates a very calm oceanic-like atmosphere, soon to get wilder and finish with a bang. This work is the first of six pieces from the Children’s Corner by Claude Debussy. It is dedicated to Debussy’s daughter, Claude-Emma, who was three years old at the time. The pieces are not intended to be played by children, but are meant to be evocative of childhood and some of the toys in Claude-Emma’s toy collection. Claude-Emma was born on October 30, 1905 in Paris, and is described as a lively and friendly child who was adored by her father. THE STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER

JOHN PHILIPSOUSA | EDITED BY JOHN R.BOURGEOIS

Washington, D.C. native and legendary bandmaster John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) wrote a dozen operettas, six full-length operas, and over 100 marches, earning him the title “March King.” He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at an early age and went on to become the conductor of the President’s Own Marine Band at age 26. In 1892, he formed “Sousa and his Band,” which toured the United States and the world under his directorship for the next forty years to great acclaim. The Stars and Stripes Forever (march) was written by Sousa on Christmas Day in 1896 and is considered the finest march ever written, and at the same time one of the most patriotic ever conceived. The march was performed on almost all of Mr. Sousa’s concerts and always drew tears to the eyes of the audience. On December 11, 1987, The Stars and Stripes Forever was designated the national march of the United States of America on a bill that passed in both houses of Congress. She has been in contact with hundreds of teachers and thousands of students through region bands and band camps throughout the South and Midwest as well as one-on-one work with individual programs and teachers.
