ABOUT LEANDER ISD The Leander Independent School District, located approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Austin, Texas, encompasses nearly 200 square miles and has campuses sited within the cities of Leander, Cedar Park, and Austin. This dynamic school district is one of the fastest growing in Texas, serves an enrollment of over 37,000 students with over 40 campuses and auxiliary facilities, while maintaining standards of excellence throughout the system. The district has 25 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 6 high schools, and 2 alternative schools. The Leander ISD Vision is Engage, Inspire, Achieve for lifelong success. Every LISD graduate is prepared with the knowledge, academic foundation, and life skills to be a productive learner, an effective communicator, and a responsible citizen, in order to be successful in an ever changing world.
ABOUT RUNNING BRUSHY MIDDLE SCHOOL Running Brushy Middle School is part of the Leander Independent School District, located 25 miles northwest of Austin, Texas. The school opened in the year 2000 as a 6th-8th grade campus, and currently serves nearly 1300 students. Running Brushy is both an ethnically and economically diverse school.
BAND AT RUNNING BRUSHY MIDDLE SCHOOL The band program at Running Brushy serves over 350 students in grades 6 through 8, with seventh and eighth graders enrolled in one of four performing bands, selected seventh and eighth graders in jazz band, and sixth graders in homogeneous beginning band classes. Band classes meet daily for approximately 45 minutes, and in order to improve individual skills and musicianship, seventh and eighth grade students attend weekly section rehearsals. A large number of our students are involved in multiple school activities in addition to band, including Athletics, Student Council, National Junior Honors Society, Art, Theatre Arts, Dance, Choir, Yearbook, as well as multiple clubs and outside of school activities. The private lesson staff at Running Brushy Middle School is an integral part of the band program, as students are provided the opportunity to increase their individual skills and knowledge through private study of their instrument with a select group of highly qualified instructors. A good portion of band students take advantage of the LISD private lesson program. The band performs many concerts throughout the year, and competes in both regional and state contests, and Solo and Ensemble competition. The band program was named a Commended Winner in the National Wind Band Honors in 2012 and 2017 and performed at the National Concert Band Festival in 2016.

VAN ROBISON HEAD BAND DIRECTOR Van Robison is in his 16th year of teaching and his seventh year as head band director at Running Brushy Middle School. He received his Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003, where he studied French Horn with Wayne Barrington and Patrick Hughes and conducting with Kevin Sedatole and Glenn Richter. While at UT, he performed under Jerry Junkin with the Wind Ensemble and Kevin Noe with the Symphony Orchestra. At Running Brushy, Van teaches the beginning French horns, trumpets, trombones, and conducts the Honors Band. Under his direction, the RBMS band program has excelled in performance and membership. The Honors Band consistently receives Sweepstakes awards at UIL competition, and has won first place, been named Best in Class, and Best Overall Band in several band festivals. Van’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association, and he has previously served as the Elective Department Head for Running Brushy Middle School. In his spare time, Van enjoys reading and spending time with his wife, Sara (also a band director), and his daughter Samantha.
MARK URBINA ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR Mark Urbina has been a proud director at Running Brushy Middle School for the past 6 years. His responsibilities include directing the Symphonic Band and Concert Band 2, as well as assisting with the Honors Band and Concert Band 1. He also teaches beginner oboe, bassoon, tuba and euphonium. Mr. Urbina received his Bachelor of Music Education from Texas State University in 2005, and studied conducting with John Stansberry and Howard Hudiburg. He obtained his Master’s degree in Music Education from University of Houston in 2012. In his college years, he was a member of the Division 3 Champions Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps in 2002, and he performed with the Texas State Orchestra in 2005 at the Texas Music Education Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas. Before teaching at Running Brushy Middle School, he was an associate band director for 6 years at Friendswood Junior High in Friendswood, Texas, and received numerous band awards. His passion and inspiration for teaching comes from his mother, Ruby Urbina, also an educator. Most importantly, he is a loving father of two beautiful girls, Kaylen Grace and Elise, and he is blessed with the support of his wife, Madelle. When Mr. Urbina is not teaching, he enjoys spending time with his family and riding his bike.
EVELYN BINKARD ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR Evelyn Binkard is currently in her ninth year of teaching and her second year at Running Brushy Middle School, where she teaches beginning flute, clarinet, and saxophone, Concert Band 1, Jazz Band, and assists with Honors Band, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band 2. Prior to coming to Running Brushy, Mrs. Binkard was the associate director of bands at Cele Middle School in Pflugerville, Texas, and S.C. Lee Junior High in Copperas Cove, Texas. Bands under her direction have received consistent superior ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest and at other festivals around the state. Mrs. Binkard earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Studies and a Performance Certificate in clarinet from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, where she studied clarinet with Richard MacDowell and conducting with Glenn Richter. She performed in the Wind Symphony under the direction of Robert Carnochan and the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin. Mrs. Binkard served as the clinician for the TMEA Region 8 All-Region Concert Band in 2012, and holds professional memberships with the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association. Mrs. Binkard enjoys performing in the Cedar Park Winds with her husband, Andrew, who is an assistant band director at Henry Middle School in Leander ISD. She and Andrew live in Leander, Texas, with their two rescued greyhounds.

Hal Leonard (2007) Grade 3 Time: 1:50 “One of my dreams has always been to be a pilot. As I write these program notes, I am only a few weeks away from receiving my private pilot’s license. After I receive my license, I will begin to pursue my instrument rating. The coolest thing about being instrument rated is that I will finally be allowed to fly into the clouds! As a pilot you join the ranks of those less bound by conventional limits on time, distance, and personal freedom. You take off to wide-open skies in any direction on the compass. But more than that, it’s freedom as you’ve never known it, far from the commonplace. Finally, being a pilot symbolizes individualism and self-reliance. You are in control and you make the choices. There’s nothing like the experience of flight, except possibly the experience of music, and I hope the enthusiasm of both can be found in this piece. Enjoy!” ~ Richard Saucedo
LANIAKEA
by JACK WILDS
FJH (2016) Grade 2.5 Time: 3:50 In 2014, scientists redefined the Milky Way galaxy’s place in the universe, determining its location in a massive supercluster of over 100,000 nearby galaxies. The team from the University of Hawaii also produced a map, in which the Milky Way galaxy is rendered as a tiny dot near the center of a spider web of star systems. They named the structure Laniakea: Hawaiian for “immeasurable heaven.” I stared at this picture for a long time. I imagined being able to truly see every aspect of this structure from a zoomed out perspective, floating in a space suit. This piece is meant to portray the emotions that might accompany such an experience.
EL ESPIRITU DE VALENCIA
by ROBERT W. SMITH
CL Barnhouse (2008) Grade 1.5-2 Time: 2:30 Literally translated, a “paso doble” is a “double-step.” Music speaking, a paso doble is not only a dance, but also a typical Spanish march-like style that is often heard as the matador enters and exits the building. El Espiritu de Valencia was written after the composer’s extended visit to Valencia, Spain, and the surrounding communities of Denia, Lliria, Bunol, and Betera. The natural beauty of the area combined with the warm and gracious hospitality of the people provided the inspiration for this tribute to Spanish music and culture.
SEVILLA (SEVILLANAS)
by ISAAC ALBENIZ arr. by CHRISTOPHER WHYTE Tapspace (2010) Grade 3 Time: 4:00
Sevilla (Sevillanas) originated as a movement within Isaac Albéniz’s Suite Española, Op. 47, for solo piano. The work consisted originally of four movements: Granada (Serenade), Cataluña (Courante), Sevilla (Sevillanas), and Cuba (Notturno). Albéniz composed the four original works in 1886, and they were sub-
sequently grouped together in 1887 in honor of the Queen of Spain. Each movement of the piece depicts a different region and musical style within Spain. All of the pieces in the suite have been arranged and performed extensively by classical guitarists and in recent years have gained widespread popularity as transcriptions for solo marimba as well. This arrangement, crafted by Christopher Whyte, features a solo marimbist who plays the majority of the original part with an extended cadenza in the middle. Seven percussionists accompany the soloist with relatively simple-to-learn parts, utilizing minimal instrumentation. This arrangement is intended to be akin in feel to the many guitar arrangements of Albéniz’s music with a light, intimate feel.
PSALM 42
by SAMUEL HAZO
Boosey & Hawkes (2004) Grade 1.5-2 Time: 2:20 “Psalm 42 is dedicated to the McCurrie family of Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. I so admired this family’s faith and strength, that I felt compelled to arrange this chorale for them. As a teacher, I often get to see children and their families and the most joyous as well as the most devastating times in their lives. An unfortunate example of the latter was when I attended five-year-old Gregory McCurrie’s funeral mass in 2002. Gregory was born with a condition called “Deletion 13-Q Syndrome.” Even though it was an unrelated heart condition that caused his passing at the age of 5, Deletion 13-Q made him completely reliant on others even for the simplest of physical tasks or communication. I taught trumpet to his three older brothers, and had gotten to know the family through their involvement in band. Every time I saw Mrs. McCurrie at the school, she always had Gregory in her arms. Even as he aged, his growing body never seemed heavy to her. It always seemed that her love for him provided her with an admirable and unflinching strength that only mother’s have. Watching the McCurrie family raise Greg with an unfathomable number of challenges, and finally sharing in their grief at his funeral, provided me with the opportunity to see people whose sense of love and faith were most deserving of admiration. At Gregory’s funeral mass, the first selection the congregation was asked to sing was Psalm 42. I kept the melody in my head the whole way back to work, where I scored this arrangement. Two of his brothers, who were in our school band, played this for the first time in our winter concert. It is a tribute to Gregory’s memory, and to the unconditional love he gave, and that his brothers, sister, and parents returned in abundance.” ~ Samuel Hazo
CHIPS AND SALSA
by ED KIEFER
Carl Fischer (2016) Grade 2 Time: 2:20 This piece begins with an infectious salsa beat created by layering Latin percussion with a repeated rhythm in the flutes, saxes, and mallet instruments. Melodies scored in thirds, a simple I-V progression and the use of many different colors will create the effect of dancing or relaxing on a sunny beach in Cuba!
