PROGRAM
NEXT GENERATION FANFARE by MICHAEL J. MILLER GRADE 3
Next Generation Fanfare was composed for the Joe E. Newsome High School Symphonic Band and was premiered in its original version in the spring of 2017 conducted by the composer. It has since been edited and expanded and is now an exciting concert opener that is sure to excite players, conductors, and audiences. "When I wrote this piece, I set out to create something that would captivate younger players."
STUMPTOWN STOMP by STEVE HODGES GRADE 1
With this lively piece you are in for a toe-tappin’, hand-clappin’ good time! Everyone takes a turn playing the theme while the woodwinds do their best “fiddle” imitations!
METAMORPHIC DANCES by BRIAN BALMAGES GRADE 5
As the title implies, Metamorphic Dances is based on traditional dances that have gone through some type of transformation. In essence, each movement brings a classic type of dance music roaring into the 21st century. The first movement is based on the polka. Starting in the classic polka style, the movement begins to incorporate elements of a circus march while moving through some irregular meter changes. The second movement is based on a waltz and relies heavily on a shifting pulse between triple and duple meter. The third movement, the Tango, is the most passionate of the four movements. The movement loosely structure like a passacaglia, with the entire movement developing around a repeated melody. The final movement was the first to be completed and was premiered a year prior to the completion of the entire piece. It is a whimsical, yet extremely energetic take on the classic cakewalk. I. Polka II. Waltz III. Tango IV. Cakewalk
SLEEP, MY CHILD by LARRY CLARK
CIREQUE DE L’ÉTRANGE by MATTHEW PUTNAM
Written to honor the memory of a lost friend, the Jewish folk song "Shlof, Mayn Kind" is used to honor his faith and heritage. It’s a beautiful song, appropriately reflecting on taking a rest after a long and difficult struggle. In addition to the melody, moving original material is added that contributes to this exemplary musical tribute.
Step right up, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, step right up! See the exotic, the strange, and the magical at the Cirque de L’étrange, or “Circus of the Strange.” This piece evokes a bygone era when circuses and carnivals provided people from all walks of life a chance to see human and animal oddities. Cirque de L’étrange is an original concert march written in standard march form, but its sound is anything but standard. This piece is playable by younger groups and is a great way to expose students to the march form and style without sounding like your typical march.
GRADE 2
ELLIPSIS by NATHAN DAUGHTRY GRADE 4
Ellipsis, for eight percussionists, is a spritely piece that never runs out of forward energy. The marimbas and vibraphones in particular are constantly moving in 16th note patterns across the keyboard. The piece begins with flowing scales over top of accented percussion and grooves, which eventually moves towards a slower, quieter middle section, and coming back out again with even more energy than before to finish out strongly. An ellipsis is a mark or series of marks (...) that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word or a phrase from the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought.
POLLY OLIVER by THOMAS ROOT GRADE 3
"Sweet Polly Oliver" is originally an English broadside ballad traceable from 1840 or earlier. It is also known as “Pretty Polly Oliver” and has several variant sets of lyrics set to a single anonymous melody. Within this beautifully written arrangement with graceful melodies and skillfully crafted scoring, Thomas Root has created a lovely concert piece that has become a standard in band repertoire.
GRADE 2
WELLSPRING by JACK WILDS GRADE 2
Jack Wilds’ piece traces the emotional journey of encountering a wellspring (a source of inspiration or joy) when one has reached the end of their ability to endure. The four note motive in the first several measures is the sound of the wellspring calling to a person who is completely exhausted. The flute melody is meant to portray this person. As it draws closer to the wellspring, the melody transforms, first taking on a determined character, then a joyful one. The four note motive is also present throughout the piece, constantly encouraging the melody, and pushing it forward. The piece ends with an unabashedly exuberant proclamation of the four note motive, leaving the listener with an impression of renewal.
SANTA’S WORKSHOP SAMBA by BRYCE NEWTON GRADE 3
Based around the popular holiday melody “Toyland”, Bryce Newton’s entertaining take on the elves at work is sure to be a hit! An exceptional change of pace from traditional holiday fare, your students will have a blast putting this one together for their holiday assemblies or concerts. Keep an ear out for several familiar holiday melodies the mischievous elves have woven throughout. Lots of fun!
