Beyond the Ridge is a piece about entering a new era in one’s life. The work was commissioned by the Canyon Ridge Middle School Honor Band for their performance at The Midwest Clinic in 2014. The work is a short, punchy fanfare in three parts highlighting each segment of the band. The piece presents a soaring theme in the brass, which is then passed around to the other sections of the band. The exultancy you will hear in the music represents the overwhelming joy one feels when entering into an exciting time; the outset of such journeys in life always hold the promise of new and rewarding adventures.

Located in North West Ireland, the isle of Innisfree is one of a number of islands situated in one of Ireland’s most beautiful lakes, Lough Gill, which sits between County Silgo and County Leitrim. The inspiration for William Butler Yeats’ poem of the same name, Innisfree was also the fiction setting for the film “The Quiet Man.”

African Alleluia is a joyous arrangement of the popular Kenyan song “Wana Baraka.” The Swahili text for this song is loosely translated as “They have blessings, those that pray, Alleluia.” Repeating percussion patterns utilizing cowbell, claves, tom-tom, and bass drum provide a solid rhythmic foundation for the catchy syncopated melody. A typical calland-response section gives this arrangement an authentic African Feel. CHRISTOPHER YEE CO N D U C TO R

Metamorphosis is intended to trace the life cycle of a butterfly, beginning with a slow, beautiful melody (the caterpillar), followed by a faster, transformational passage (the caterpillar in the chrysalis), after which a new “butterfly” melody emerges, suggesting that the butterfly has taken flight. At the end of the piece, the opening material returns as the butterfly floats off into the distance. Although the piece was intended to be about the life cycle of a butterfly, it occurred to the composer that this whole idea of transformation and metamorphosis applies just as easily to our own development as humans, from our innocent childhood through adolescence to the point at which we ourselves “take flight.”

Bluegrass Rondeau is a fun piece based on four old fiddle tunes that are woven together in rondeau form. These time-tested melodies are bright and rhythmic and tend to stay with you long after you hear them. Although they are arranged with creative changes of harmony and style, the fiddle tunes keep the character and flavor of old time dance and foot-stompin’ music. CARTER MATSCHEK CO N D U C TO R

Angelic Celebrations is a piece for concert band intended to invoke the feelings of joy, beauty, and exultation. The piece is highly rhythmic with many dance-like motifs, and it is punctuated and textured by very active percussion. The joyous celebration is interrupted by a powerful chorale before taking off into another dance section. One should envision a host of angels singing praises, flying and diving around a divine light shining bright in the sky. This piece was commissioned by a consortium of schools organized by the 2013 Southern Maine Junior Academy, Geogre Shabo, Camp Director, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, and premiered on July 20, 2013. Gregory Mantone was an all-state and all-eastern euphonium player who grew up on Long Island, New York. He was majoring in music at Ithaca College when a tragic car accident took his life. He was the product of the Mt. Sinai School District, a small district on Long Island where his father is still the Director of Music and Applied Arts. As with any piece of this nature, it finds its form through a wealth of emotions. In this particular case, the composer was asked to explore music of a lyrical nature that would become more uplifting as it developed — and so began the process of writing Forever… In many ways, the title seems incredibly appropriate as it implies that the piece will continue to be uplifting long after the music ends. This clever arrangement of “Jingle Bells” invites all sections of the band to have some fun! With jazzy variations of the melody, call-and-response interplay, and a dynamic “big band” ending, this chart provides a toe-tapping good time for the performers and audience alike! The origins of the Hopak dance date back to the 16th century in the territory now known as the Ukraine. Originally a male-dominated domain, it would later be adopted by solo dancers, couples and mixed dance groups. Largely improvised and physically demanding, this popular dance is known for high leaps, squatting kicks and swift turns. The Ukraine word “hopak” literally means “hop” or “to jump.” A fiery introduction quickly sets the pace for the energetic work. The main dance melody is heard shortly thereafter, evolving as it passes through the various sections of the ensemble. The dance suddenly slows to the tune of a carefree trombone solo, then gradually quickens back to the original lively mood. The intrepid dance increases in speed and intensity ending with a wonderfully brazen finish.
