S

nside every person, there is a place where creativity dwells. Gears turn, dreams flow, and ideas spark into life. Imaginarium is the place that every creative person goes to, again and again, to find their muse, flesh out ideas, and to exert change on the world around them. Commissioned for the 2015 Association of Texas Small School All-State Band, Imaginarium is comprised of four sections: “Sparks” where ideas begin to germinate; “The Cloud Factory,” which represents the day dreamy zone where one imagines endless possibilities, “Here, There be Monsters...” is that moment of panic or nightmare that all creative people feel when selfdoubt sets in and the task seems to monumental to overcome; a brief recapitulation to “Sparks” before “Eureka!” the idea is fully realized! This piece is dedicated to all of the dreamers who see more in the world than is actually there, who see possibilities where others see only dead ends, and who believe in creation rather than destruction.

TONADILLAS SUITE

enrique GRANADOS / ralph FORD I. El tra la la y el punteado II. La Maja Dolorosa III. El Majo Discreto

O

riginally composed for piano and voice, Tonadillas Suite is selected from a group of twelve songs by the “Chopin of Spain,” Enrique Granados. The text presents stories of majos and majas (men and women of Madrid) and their assorted liaisons. In the first movement, a maja states that, in no uncertain terms, she will sing to him … no matter what he says or does to her. La Maja Dolorosa is a majas sorrowful song of her love lost. The final movement weaves the tale of one of three majos (one discreet, one forgotten and one timid). Granados is recognized today as one of Spain’s most important composers; one whose multi-faceted, often Nationalistic music, is instantly recognizable and distinctly his own. rachel a. JOHNSTONE, CONDUCTOR

wirling Prisms is derived from the abstract concept of optical prisms spinning freely in space while reflecting light in numerous directions. It depicts the bending, reflecting and dispersing of light into its component colors (the colors of the rainbow). The challenge was to create a sense of each prism affecting light in countless ways, yet also implying a certain “harmony” between the light and the prisms. To help tie everything together, further inspiration was taken from Impressionism in art, which among other things, places emphasis on the changing characteristics of light. This directly led into the overall Impressionistic quality of the music in that there is a strong focus on harmony, texture and orchestration. Swirling Prisms was commissioned by the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band and premiered at the 2016 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.

LANIAKEA

I

n 2014, scientists redefined the Milky Way’s place in the universe by determining that our galaxy is located within a massive supercluster made up of over 100,000 nearby galaxies. The team from The University of Hawaii also produced a map, in which the Milky Way is rendered as a tiny dot near the center of a spiderweb of star systems. They named this structure Laniakea: Hawaiian for “immeasurable heaven.” I stared at this picture for a long time. I imagined being able to truly see every aspect of this structure from a zoomed out perspective, floating in a space suit. This piece is meant to portray the emotions that might accompany such an experience.

T

cynthia a. LANSFORD, GUEST CONDUCTOR

“Clarinet Candy” is a jazz inspired toe-tapping clarinet feature. The piece is scored for three solo clarinets and is written with a light hearted band accompaniment that is typical of Anderson’s style. We hope you enjoy this timeless American band standard!

nspired by Rollo, a fictional character created by American Composer Charles Ives to represent ultra-conservative musical tastes, David Maslanka takes us on a musical outing exploring commonplace musical ideas from a satirical perspective. It is intended as a good-humored, gentle parody of the old “concerts in the park” and of some of the bands in which the composer has played where tuning was “less than perfect!” A tongue-in-cheek favorite!

SPIRIT OF THE STALLION

brian BALMAGES

he music of Leroy Anderson is firmly entrenched in American popular culture. A composer of distinctive and delightful miniatures, his best-known works include “Sleigh Ride,” “The Syncopated Clock,” and “Bugler’s Holiday.” He wrote nearly all his pieces originally for orchestra, then transcribed most of them himself for band and often for other groups of instruments as well. Mitchell Parrish added lyrics to seven of the works after the pieces were written.

mary SCHANI AND rachel JOHNSTONE, SOLOISTS

A

s the title suggests, Spirit of the Stallion is a piece inspired by the powerful and magnificent stallion. The music conjures sentiments of pride, strength, daring and sheer power of will. It reflects these qualities and engages the listener in a wall of sonic colors combined with simple, yet powerful meter changes. One can feel the stallion galloping as it goes through a series of changing moods — from bold to graceful, fierce to humble. The music remains intense throughout, yet subtly balances these ever changing moods within the driving rhythms and colorful, daring harmonies. Spirit of the Stallion was commissioned by Stoneleigh Elementary School (Baltimore, Maryland; Allison Glewwe, Instrumental Music Teacher) and is dedicated to Jackie Freeburger, former instrumental music teacher at Stoneleigh. The stallion is their mascot. andrew d. BINKARD, CONDUCTOR

nd to All a Good Night was written and conceived as a holiday season encore for band. This cheery sparkler features each of our sections in idiomatic treatments of the familiar holiday tunes Up on the Housetop, Deck the Halls and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. It’s our way of saying, “Happy Holidays!” ENJOY!
