January 11, 2018 To the Texas Music Educators Association:
To the Texas Music Educators Association: Leander Independent School District congratulates the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band for their remarkable achievement of being named the TMEA 3C Honor Band. This outstanding distinction highlights the talents and dedication of one of LISD’s best music programs. We applaud these hard-working students and their committed directors. On behalf of the district, I also offer appreciation to the members of TMEA for your commitment to excellence in music education and for giving musical ensembles, including the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band, the opportunity to participate and develop into exemplary programs. We celebrate this memorable experience in the lives of our students, and hope that it is one that they will look back upon with great pride for years to come. With sincere gratitude,
Congratulations to the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band on behalf of the Leander ISD Board of Trustees for their selection as the TMEA Class 3C Honor Band, and their invitation to perform at the February 2018 TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio. It is a tremendous accomplishment to be recognized as an outstanding music ensemble in the state of Texas. LISD maintains a solid commitment to supporting the Fine Arts and our instrumental music programs. We recognize that these important programs strengthen our students’ academic and life-long success.
The Henry Middle School Honors Band success further
demonstrates our district’s commitment to music education. We are extremely proud of these talented Leander ISD Honors Band students and their dedicated directors. They have invested a tremendous amount of time and energy into their program, and this honor is well deserved! Sincerely,
Dan Troxell, Ph.D. Superintendent Pamela Waggoner President Board of Trustees

T
rittico was composed in 1963 for Dr. William D. Revelli who gave the first performance of the work in the Spring of 1964, in Ann Arbor, with the Symphonic Band of the University of Michigan. “Trittico” is defined as a triptych or painting on three panels, such as is common on altars. The first and third movements are related to one another in that their character is brilliantly forward-moving and energetic, and the main theme of the first movement reappears in the culmination point of the third movement. The second movement is a strongly contrasting dramatic scene with turbulent recitatives and expressive woodwind solos, punctuated by low brass and percussion. PROGRAMNOTES
erek Bourgeois wrote Serenade for his own wedding, to be played by the organist as the guests left the ceremony. Not wishing to allow them the luxury of proceeding in an orderly 2/4, the composer wrote the work in 11/8, and in case anyone felt too comfortable, he changed it to 13/8 in the middle. The work has now been released in a number of different orchestrations of the original version for organ. CYNTHIA LANSFORD, CONDUCTOR YIDDISH DANCES MOVEMENT V: FREYLACHS ADAM GORB
Y
iddish Dances was commissioned by Timothy Reynish for his 60th birthday. It is very much a party piece, bringing together two of Gorb’s abiding passions: the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Klezmer, the folk music of the Yiddish speaking people. In total, the piece is about fourteen minutes long and is in five movements, all based on set Klezmer dances: Khosidl — a medium tempo 2/4 in which the music moves between satire, sentimentality, and pathos; Terkishe, an up-tempo Jewish tango; Doina, a free recitative in which various instruments in the band get a chance to show off; Hora, slow 3/8 time with a characteristic rocking rhythm; and Freylachs, very fast 2/4 time in which themes from the previous movements are recalled, ending in a “rowdy good time” for all concerned. G
race Before Sleep, composed in 2011 by Susan LaBarr, was inspired by a poem of thanks written by Sara Teasdale. A quiet opening builds into a gorgeous, resounding climax before coming to a more reflective, thankful close. This wind setting, arranged in 2013 by J. Eric Wilson, draws upon the warm sonorities of the concert band to reflect LaBarr’s musical intent and Teasdale’s poetic sentiments.
Grace Before Sleep Sara Teasdale How can our minds and bodies be Grateful enough that we have spent Here in this generous room, we three, This evening of content? Each one of us has walked through storm And fled the wolves along the road; But here the hearth is wide and warm, And for this shelter and this light Accept, O Lord, our thanks tonight. O
n the Kerry Shore is a tribute to a beautiful harbor town in Ireland named Dingle. The piece begins with a steady percussion texture, meant to represent placid seas with a cool morning breeze blowing in. Small snippets of the melody represent the gentle rise and fall of the surf on the shore. A subtle combination of ocean drum and ship’s bell complete the nautical picture. On the Kerry Shore was commissioned and premiered by the Cedar Park Winds at the 2017 Midwest Clinic. This work is dedicated to Jack’s wife, Noel. ANDREW BINKARD, CONDUCTOR

AMERICAN BIG TOP BRIAN BALMAGES
A
merican Big Top can best be described as an American circus march that meets Charles Ives. Largely based on original material, the piece weaves in small anecdotal references to The Stars and Stripes Forever, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, The Yankee Doodle Boy, Yankee Doodle, The Star-Spangled Banner, The Entertainer and The Yellow Rose of Texas. The entire piece is based on the layering of melodies, harmonies, textures and rhythms. As the piece develops, the layering becomes more and more complex, yet always with a splash of fun and humor. It is a highly energetic work that constantly throws a curve ball (no pun intended — well, maybe just a little) at the listener with just enough Americana thrown in it to give it a homegrown feel without necessarily being categorized as a full-on patriotic work. The piece was commissioned by the Artie Henry Middle School Honors Band (Cedar Park, Texas; Robert Herrings, conductor) on the occasion of their selection as the TMEA CCC Honor Band. Given that this was their third time selected as honor band, the piece playfully uses the theme of “three” throughout, beginning immediately with groups of three that move through three different time signatures (including 3/8). In addition, The Stars and Stripes Forever reference only involves the trio section and the only part of Take Me Out to the Ballgame is “One! Two! Three strikes you’re out!” (Of course, we then hear the sound of a ball being hit!) RACHEL JOHNSTONE, CONDUCTOR
POWER STRUGGLE NATHAN DAUGHTREY
P
ower Struggle features a balanced ensemble of four keyboard percussion and four battery percussion. The struggle is apparent from the opening bars of the piece, with the two halves of the ensemble competing for attention in an exhilarating and bombastic fashion. The struggle subsides briefly as the keyboards present a new melody and the battery provides a quietly grooving backdrop. The two opposing sections of the ensemble continue this struggle, inwardly and outwardly, until the end of the piece. FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE

J
osé Gomes de Abreu, better known as Zequinha de Abreu, was one of the most prominent Brazilian composers of the “Belle Époque,” having contributed to the establishment of the “choro” genre. He is best known for this famous composition, “Tico-Tico No Fubá,” known abroad as Tico Tico. In Portuguese, a “tico-tico” is a bird — the rufous-collard sparrow. “Fubá“ is similar to cornmeal. A “choro” is a lament, derived from the word “chorar” (to cry). Essentially the farmer is complaining about the sparrow eating his crop. Ironically, this festive tune leaves little to cry about as this samba is meant for dancing, as made popular in the 1947 film Copacabana. With its quirky rhythms, bouncy melodic lines, and infectious spirit, Tico Tico is nothing short of a Latin dance party! FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE
