About the Foundation

he Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. advances excellence and leadership in education, research, and patient care by raising and managing private financial support for the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals. Founded in 1949 as an independent charitable not-for-profit organization and overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the Foundation raises millions of dollars in new gifts each year. The Foundation manages 1,100 separate accounts supporting virtually every department and center, including endowments for professorships, research, lectureships, academic programs, scholarships, fellowships, facilities and equipment purchases, and other activities. Gifts are received annually from friends, alumni, corporations, foundations, and community organizations. Today, invested funds total more than $215 million and total assets exceed $230 million.

The work of the Foundation serves to inform and involve generous supporters in the advancement of initiatives and programs that influence health care across North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

Our Mission The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. secures financial and volunteer resources for the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals to provide for a healthier future through medical education, research, and patient care.

So I simply want to remind you how important you are to this place that we love so much.

ndoubtedly the highlight of the last fiscal year for the Medical Foundation was the close of the Carolina First campaign on December 31st. The eight-year campaign was not only the most successful in the history of UNC-Chapel Hill, but also was the fifth

most successful campaign ever in the United States. The $610 million raised for the School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals during that time represents the generosity of many, many caring people. All aspects of our mission to educate, to discover and to heal benefited from this incredible support.

As I write this, the world is a very different place than last December, or even this past June. So I want to simply remind you how important you are to this place that we love so much. Miracles of hope and healing happen every day at the School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals. Through your continued financial support, miracles will continue to happen.

Battle Foundation creates distinguished cancer research award n fall 2007, the Battle Foundation of Rocky Mount board of directors established the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award, a permanent endowment held by The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., in support of cancer research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Last spring, Yi Zhang, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine, was awarded the first Battle award in recognition of his work. The award is coordinated through the dean’s office at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

The award recognizes exceptional cancer research at the medical school and comes with a $25,000 prize. The Battle Foundation has supported the Medical Foundation for more than 30 years through support of the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Awards for the Basic and Clinical Sciences. These $1,000 awards were increased to $5,000 each in 2008.

Zhang, a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is an internationally recognized scientist in the area of chromatin, a genetic material. He received the Gertrude Elion Award in 2003 from the American Association of Cancer Research and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. A testament to the high impact of his work came recently from the research information company, Thomson Scientific, which ranked Zhang 7th worldwide in numbers of high impact citations in the area of molecular biology and genetics.

Hyman L. Battle (1896–1972) established The Battle Foundation in 1946. Like his grandfather Kemp Plummer Battle, president of the University after the Civil War, Hyman was deeply interested in education. He was a volunteer leader of several educational institutions, including UNC-Chapel Hill, which he attended from 1914 to 1916. During the

Fund established by Kittners for opthalmology department’s future

n April 2008, the School of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology received the largest gift in its history—a $1 million commitment from UNC alumnus David Kittner in partnership with the Samuel and Rebecca Kardon Foundation—to establish an endowed innovation fund for the depart-

On June 12, in recognition of Kittner’s and the foundation’s generosity, the department’s facility at UNC’s Ambulatory Care Center was dedicated and named the Kittner Eye Center.

Kittner’s nephew, Sam Kittner, a 1985 Carolina alumnus, gave a special presentation honoring his uncle and remarks were offered by Chancellor James Moeser; Etta Pisano, vice dean of academic affairs for the School of Medicine; and Travis Meredith, department chair and the Sterling A. Barrett Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology.

“Our future is much brighter now,” Meredith said when the gift was first announced.

“The need for ophthalmology services is increasing, and this endowment will help us provide even more advanced and technologically sophisticated services for our patients.”

For Kittner, the gift represents his strong love for Carolina and his deep appreciation for good vision, particularly after witnessing how various members of his family and others benefited from advanced eye care. “I thought that the gift would be a great way to help people well into the future,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the advancements the center will continue to make.”

Patient visit numbers per year for eye care at UNC have more than doubled from 1993 to 2007. The needs for ophthalmologic care are expected to continue increasing as more baby boomers retire and North Carolina’s population continues to grow. Over the next three to four years, it is estimated that annual patient visits will increase by more than 25 percent.

A 1939 UNC graduate with a business administration degree, Kittner now practices law in Philadelphia. In addition, he has two brothers, three nieces and two nephews who all have degrees from UNC. Previously, Kittner and the Kardon Foundation—a charitable foundation based in Philadelphia—have given more than $300,000 to various components of the University, primarily to the Rose and Louis Kittner Scholarship Fund, which provides need-based scholarships for undergraduate students.
