Examination of Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack’s 'Preparing', 1959, though online records at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and comparative analysis of similar works online has revealed that it may be an example of his durchdrückzeichnung drawing technique, commonly used throughout his career. Historical research and investigation of the materials and techniques involved uncovered the enduring influence of Hirschfeld-Mack’s training in lithography and the artistic sensibility developed during the Weimar period of the Bauhaus school. Even without insitu examination of 'Preparing' to confirm conclusions, this analysis has provided a deeper appreciation of the contributions of an eminent émigré artist practicing in Australia, with direct links to the influential Bauhaus school and prominent European modern artists, but who has been largely unrecognised in Australian cultural history.
