GRADUATE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO – PROPOSITIONS, FALL 2014

The profession of architecture has increasingly become a global endeavor. New markets around the world offer new opportunities to expand our practice and experience. With growing demand for high-quality design and building systems in developing countries, we are experiencing a shift in the routines of professional practice. Many architectural practices in the United States, Europe, and Australia have quickly adjusted their firms to acquire work in rapidly-developing countries such as China.

China offers opportunities for our profession that hardly exist elsewhere. The brisk urbanization and development of new cities and infrastructure are unparalleled, and, consequently, expectations for building standards, environmental sustainability, and the addressing of social issues concerning the built environment are thus increasing. Currently, China is undergoing vast transitions in investments, developments, and prospects for the new generation. A new generation, whose expectations for a leisure and luxury-oriented lifestyle are ever-growing, often boast of exuberance and are lacking in new alternatives. As architects, we must adapt to, and work to understand, local cultures and practices in order to be effective contributors to these architectural visions.

This studio has taken the opportunity to gain experience in this global practice and a way of working in this rapidly changing environment. Students have been exposed to important questions concerning the environmental and social feasibility of our ideals and concepts. In return, we have learned – and will continue to learn – about Chinese culture and practice, which allows us to acquire a new, valuable perspective of our own professional culture.

This Global Design Studio is conducted around an urban investigation and corresponding proposals to be realized architectural projects in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. The participating students worked initially in interdisciplinary teams with graduate students of the School of Urban Planning of the Beijing School of Civil Engineering and Architecture. In an on-site workshop during the first weeks of the semester, the teams conceptualized initial projects and further developed those into thoroughly designed urban interventions and building proposals. The client and the government of Zhengzhou will review the final outcome in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The pace of creative output and workload has been demanding, and the quality of the output is at a high, professional level.

The studio has been generously funded by the organizing office of SPD Planning Design Corporation in Beijing, the client (CSCEC) in China and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. During the trip to China, we met the client and attended a collaborative workshop with students from the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and professionals from the office of SPD. INTERNATIONAL DESIGN WORKSHOP FOR ZHENGZHOU WATERFRONT LEISURE & CULTURAL DISTRICT Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province and is located south of the Yellow River in the Chinese hinterland southwest of Beijing. Zhengzhou covers an area of 7,446.2 square kilometers (2,875 square miles) and has a population of 735.6 million people. As the provincial capital, Zhenghou has jurisdiction over 6 districts, 5 cities and 1 county, a statelevel new area, two national development zones, and a state-level export processing zone. Being one of China’s eight ancient capitals, Zhengzhou is a significant historical and cultural city. Offering unique natural resources, the city has been named one of China’s Excellent Tourism Cities, a National Garden City, and a state health city. Zhengzhou is the birth town of the Yellow Emperor HuangDi (黄帝)(reigned 2697 to 2597 B.C.), who is regarded as the initiator of Chinese civilization. Today, Henan Province is an important political, economic, educational, scientific and cultural center. The Binhe International New Town is one of nine regional new towns of Zhengzhou. The new town is in the southeast of urban center, south of the Chao River, east of the national road 107, north of Jingnan 15th Road and west of Sigangliandong Road. The overall area is about 10.47 km2 and the investment is over 10 billion RMB (1.6 billion USD). In 2012, CHINA CONSTRUCTION (ZHENGZHOU) CITY DEVELOPMENT CONSTRUCTION CORP. LTD (CSCEC) has signed the development contract with the local government, which is the tier 1 land developer of the new town and is the client of the workshop. CHALLENGES Urban Vision Our workshop project area is in the core area of the new town and includes blocks of Commercial and Residential Land, which are located on both sides of a central river. The river is the key landscape node of the whole new town. The challenge is to develop proposals of urban spaces which enhance the relationship between the site and its program. Quality urban spaces are equally important as visions for the architectural development character as a whole. Additionally, rapid urbanization presents challenges related to both sustainability and shifting social conditions, both of which are primary concerns of the workshop partipants. Inner City Landscape The project is considered to be an urban waterfront development, a so called “Central Recreation District (CRD)”. As this becomes a new typology in Chinese Urban Central Districts, the team has been asked to find adequate solutions for it’s implementation. Sensitive urban design is the central tenant of the project. Sustainability, Recreation and Identity Energy and water are rapidly becoming valuable and sparse commodities, as well natural resources, such as open land and pervious surfaces. The team elaborated concepts how to address these topics as design related drivers of the overall project. The specific climate conditions asks for adequate solutions. Although Zhengzhou is located close to the Yellow River, the city itself lacks an adequate hydrological system for recreational water access within its urban fabric. The client’s goal is to develop a contemporary urbanism related to a sustainable hydrological system in the city. The challenge in this project is to develop urban concepts, which are generated through the logic of sustainable systems and create a public awareness through a visionary design and a creation of a unique identity. The project proposal attempts to demonstrate new ideas in Sustainable Urbanism, performative Landscape Design and Sensible Architectural Interventions. In marketing efforts, the results of the project will be communicated through professional and public media in order to raise awareness for the new urban concept in this area. The project has been developed as a demonstration model for Experts and Public Officials from other communities in the region.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION |

RIVER BEAT

The ambitions of the design proposal are twofold: 1. To link the blocks to the north and south of the site through the design of a water collection and dispersal system, which creates a dynamic, walkable landscape influenced by seasonal conditions and fluctuations. 2. To educate both visitors and residents on sustainability by envisioning the site as an experiential journey through the harvest, consumption, and production of energy. NEW RIVER TYPOLOGY The traditional understanding of the river within an urban environment is that of a linear element along which to move. We propose to fundamentally redefine the understanding of water within the city by systematically breaking down the linearity of the river and redistributing water into a network of pockets and canals. These elements are then overlaid with landscape and built form to generate a layered environment of water, circulation, and program. LOGIC OF BUILT FORM The primary transportation elements on site serve as a regulating grid within which buildings can slide on the north-south axis, creating a variety of relationships between building, street, and water. There is no clear boundary between the water, the landscape, and the buildings. This blurred language extends into the neighboring blocks and provides a connection between the north and south residential blocks. SITE PROGRAM/CIRCULATION The site can be understood as four unique districts of use unified by a similar language. These districts work to engage the surrounding environment within the larger context of the Binhe district. The central bridge acts as the transportation hub and iconic node of the site. Visitors circulate from the hub through the waterfront landscape either to the west into the cultural district, or to the east into the community district and subsequently the ecological wetlands district. These districts are not isolated, but rather reach into their surrounding neighborhoods, expanding their realm of influence. WATER STRATEGY The strategic collection and deployment of water on the site allows for a dynamic and evolving landscape. Buildings on site and in the surrounding neighborhoods collect and store rainwater, which is stored and feeds the system through a series of carefully designed canals and tributaries in order to create choreographed fluctuations in the water level. These controlled fluctuations transform the landscape and the sectional relationship of land to water, continually redefining the identity of the space.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION |

CENTRAL CULTURAL WATER VALLEY Given the large scale and variety of the surrounding land use parcels, the SPD team chose to divide the site into three cultural zones, each with a distinct character: Culture, Fashion, and Ecological Recreation. Within these zones, unique architectural landmarks are located, which function as nodes, or attractor points, to ground the program within the landscape and stimulate economic sustainability. These nodes encompass key aspects of the site including the lake front district, subway station, and the introduction of the river system. The water strategy focused on the hydrological center located at the east end of the site where the river system is introduced. Areas of the river were pushed and pulled to create different zones of inhabitation at multiple scales. The river is extended into the surrounding context by means of channels and small waterways that are used to pull storm water runoff from the adjacent building sites into the river. A series of wetlands were proposed to purify the river system including sedimentation basins, constructed wetlands, and infiltration ponds. This process was codified through the didactic experience of the hydrological center and a playful terraced building form that anchored the east end of the site. The buildings within the site are grouped together into districts, each focused on a more human-scale, creating smaller commercial and cultural zones that foster pedestrian activity, social interaction, and landscape experience along the new “Water Street.” The project’s landscape strategy seeks to create a successional experience as one transverses the length of the site, experiencing different types of landscape and strips, or zones, each focusing on a different landscape characteristic. These landscape zones extend beyond the immediate boundaries of the site to create linkages with the adjacent neighborhoods, integrating the site more fully into its surrounding communities, and helping to bring people from the surrounding area into the newly proposed Waterfront Recreational Area.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION |

CULTURAL RE-IMAGINATION

DESIGN INTENT: Cultural Re-imagination celebrates the rich agricultural context of Zhengzhou while providing it with a strong identity that is embedded within its historic past yet forward looking to the future of Zhengzhou as an international destination.

CONCEPT: The primary concept for this project was based on the Chinese character 黍 [shu]. This character is composed of three individual characters symbolizing water, people and the landscape. From historic times, civilization building and human development was dependent upon the cultivation of land and manipulation of water. This project similarly explores the relationship between water, ground and people by juxtaposition and overlay of these elements.

At the east end of the site, the land and water dwell together through the design of an agricultural wetland, creating an equal relationship to both water and land. At the central zone of the site, the water is instead placed above the land, creating a series of underground pathways that allows visitors to experience spaces with filtered light. At the west end, the ground rises above water, providing places for viewing.

PROGRAM + ZONES: This manipulation of land and water creates three major zones, starting from the ecological and educational zone to the east, the commercial and entertainment zone at the center and the civic cultural center to the west. The design takes inspiration from the old fabric of the site, using the diagonal lines and spaces in the design. This allows the team to incorporate the historic tradition of the site while also dividing the previously-proposed mega blocks into smaller-scaled landscape and urban spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN: The three zones as outlined above dictate the architectural language for the buildings. The buildings at the east end draw inspiration from the traditional farming architecture. The water streets in the central zone of the site are more modern in their architectural language and incorporate several different sustainable systems such as green roofs, which provide additional thermal mass. The buildings on the west are larger in scale and are more sculptural and free in form.

71

University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning

MASTER PLAN

Along with the opportunity to travel to a new place halfway around the globe, the International Design Workshop for the new Zhengzhou Water Leisure and Culture Zone provided us with the oportunity to engage in productive collaboration with designers from the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) and SPD Planning Design Corporation. This collaboration resulted in three independent design strategies, one from each design team, for the proposed site, developed throughout the week-long workshop and presented in a final ceremony. These final strategies were then brought back to Michigan. The University of Michigan team then sought to synthesize the ideas developed during the workshop into a final design scheme. The following pages show the design process throughout the time in China, the workshop, and the early stages of project development back at the University of Michigan.

We appreciate the opportunity to have been included in the workshop, and are looking forward to continuing the friendships and professional relationships made during this time overseas.
